{EVENT #1} ADVERSITY 131425.845119
MOD NOTES: Welcome to the first event! Please direct any questions to the corresponding comment below. Note that characters can be involved in multiple prompts (whether you choose to thread that out or not), and that character decisions and actions taken on these prompts will affect future events, storylines, and relationships with other peoples of Expiation. In two weeks from this event, the moderator team will be posting a poll on the OOC community that will allow players to share what actions their characters took and two weeks after that, there will be an announcement made sharing said results, how those actions have impacted the state of the world, the game's story, what information can be used ICly, and so on. The various prompts are, of course, optional, so you're not required to travel to Rumpitur if you don't wish to. You're not required to help the locals or other Chosen during the food shortage. There is an option to simply not be involved, and that too can have potential repercussions on the future of the game's overarching story and other characters. |
WE'RE STARVING HERE!
HOW TO REPAIR A REFRIGERATOR 101

Do you remember the fishing tournament where a variety of locals and Chosen alike submitted a bunch of fish for a very modest and unimpressive wooden sculpture? Well... about that...
Aldrip's refrigeration has catastrophically failed and as a result, the food stores that the locals have been keeping are now on the verge of total and utter collapse. The townspeople are in an absolute uproar. According to them, this has never happened before and though they would normally just pray to Those Who Were There for a resolution, they kind of need something immediate. Otherwise, all residents of Aldrip are facing the very real threat of starvation.
The good news is that you can help!
The more handy of the Aldrip townsfolk are going to get right to work on repairing the refrigeration units. At present, the only units that exist belong to those who are making food and providing them to the townspeople. This means people like the tavern keepers, the inn, bakers, and other miscellaneous cooks, are those who possess and control these refrigeration units. If you've got some handyman skills, put them to work, though be aware that working on repairing the technological malfunction might just be an electrifying experience. Literally.
THE ALTERNATIVE TO COOKING MAMA

There sure has been a lot of opportunities to cook, but now Aldrip needs cooks and would-be cooks like never before!
Those not necessarily good with repair work might find themselves better suited for hunting the local wildlife, whether that's on the meadowland plains or taking, yet again, a fishing pole into hand. A good deal of the meat, vegetables, and fruit that was already preserved has spoiled and will need to be replaced hastily if people want to continue eating.
With bodies going to retrieve replacement food, there's suddenly an open and demand for people who either already have experience with cooking or just really want to learn. There's no better way to learn than some truly hands-on experience. For those with some cooking in their background, even if it's simple at its best, the kitchens are free and available. You might not have your choice cuts of meat or whatever else you might be accustomed to preparing, but fortunately the dried spices and herbs aren't impacted by the food shortage. Consider making something flavourful or just really spicy. (Alphen, we're looking at you.)
If you haven't cooked before and you're one of those who's just dying to learn, pair up with a buddy in the kitchen, or fumble along. Beggars can't be choosers, after all, and we're facing a crisis. Maybe the threat of having no food will encourage people to try whatever you make, no matter how black, crispy brown it might turn out.
The more innovative and creative individuals may find a way to dry / dehydrate anything caught or harvested. Or we can just have a huge impromptu grilling adventure where people hold raw meat over fire. Your choice!
WE'RE OFF TO SEE... THE NAGA?
WE COME IN PEACE

Aldrip is hardly the only settlement on the continent of Expiation and though the various peoples of these settlements can often stick within their own, when times are hard and adversity encroaches on livelihood, they're not against seeking the aid of others. Some of the more well-travelled of the Aldrip locals are planning an expedition to visit Rumpitur, an impressively-sized village on a peninsula to the east of Aldrip.
They are ready and willing to take all volunteers who are interested in accompanying them to barter for food and other potentially needed supplies. The visit to Rumpitur will require travel through the Pessiria Forest, a thick veil of trees that one can be easily lost in, but if everyone's together, then it shouldn't be an issue.
Consider joining the expedition and getting to know some of Expiation's other peoples.
Rumpitur is home to a race of naga-like people with scaled features, tails, sharp teeth, and forked tongues. Their way of life is considerably more simple in comparison to some of Aldrip's fancier advancements. They are skilled combatants and a fishing people, whose diet primarily consists of seafood. In Rumpitur, one may take note of their many-in-number stone constructs, depicting a notable and perhaps significant naga.
Although they may seem intimidating at first glance and can have terse ways of speaking, they are amicable enough and will be willing to do business with Aldrip and her citizens.
OR MAYBE WE DON'T

The visit from Aldrip, which is a rare occurrence indeed, results in much confusion for the Rumpiturian people, and this may or may not be considered a blessing to those who could be more unscrupulous in nature.
Although the visit to Rumpitur is meant to be one of peace, locals of Aldrip and the Chosen alike have the opportunity to steal supplies from the people. If they choose to do this, they may find that there are no immediate repercussions for this course of action. The likelihood is that this visit has caught the Rumpiturians so off-guard that they're not expecting to be robbed. Of course, how this will impact things in the future remains to be seen...
Individuals may grab as much as they can carry, depending on what they've brought with them. The locals of Aldrip who planned this expedition provided convenient-to-carry containers that can be filled with anything retrieved from the village and her kind. Larger containers will require at least two people to carry when filled, so perhaps you're inclined to work with a partner-in-crime. Just remember that for every action, there's a consequence, even if you're not seeing it right away!
Rumpitur will not notice that they are missing inventory until well after Aldrip has left and travels back through the forest to town, so no one need fear the chasing and hissing of snakes into Pessiria.
Probably.
HOLD ONTO YOUR VALUABLES
IT'S NOT REAL... RIGHT?

Those who've decided to brave the forest will find on their adventure to Rumpitur that it's rather straight forward and proceeds without incident.
The sky above the trees is a difficult thing to see, blocked out by the way the evergreens stretch and imposingly tower above. At times light may scatter through various openings in branches, but it is a largely darker atmosphere, and at night requires the assistance of candlelight or related.
Travellers with the courage to make way through the forest with the others may hear occasional snaps, cracks, whispers, and more enigmatic sounds that are difficult to justify with logic. Of course, whether this is all in the head or something truly more sinister at play is up for debate. Despite the strange occurrences that one may experience, no members of the Chosen will find themselves harmed or otherwise physically disturbed initially. That said, some may later find themselves haunted by strange dreams and visions of the forest in the future if they are especially sensitive to such things.
Were those sounds real? Were you just hearing things? It's probably wisest not to investigate further. At least, maybe not now...
COUNT YOUR NUMBERS

Aldrip has a great many stories about Pessiria Forest and many of the other towns, landmarks, settlements, and people scattered across the continent. Most of these stories seem to depict folklore or a certain mythological feeling about them, implying that many of the locals don't truly believe in any of the more macabre tales. Pessiria Forest has no shortage of poetry and song that pertains to its supposedly 'holy' grounds and mysterious happenstances.
There are several alleged accounts about people having gone missing in the forest, due to how complicated it is to navigate by one's self. The more people travelling together, the safer it is purported to be.
Before leaving for Rumpitur, heads have been counted to ensure that wherever they start is also where they end up, however, for the more observant, one may find that the returning party is short of a few heads. Maybe some of them stayed behind to further the diplomatic efforts with the Rumpiturians. Maybe they're going to catch up later. Maybe they took a different pathway through the forest with some of their mates. Maybe there's something more untoward going on.
If this is brought up to the locals, the leaders of the expedition will warily make note of it and conduct their own investigation. At least, they say they will. Either way, it's suspicious no matter how you may turn it. Perhaps put heads together with another and see if you're just miscounting.

rin | original character
a. how to repair a fridge, rin style
[Rin owed it to some of the vendors here that allowed her to use their kitchens so she could treat her friends to a nice meal. So, the least she could do was try to fix their fridges. Or at least, attempt to, with what little she knew about fixing fridges and appliances in general. There would be an attempt, as she uses her height to easily glance over at what wires she could see. Unfortunately, knowing nothing about what wiring would fix what, she takes a guess and tries to move about some wiring in an attempt to fix it.
She fails, of course, and the next course of action is something she thought might help this whole situation. This is Rin, though, and she doesn't quite use her brain. So, when she makes her way back to the fridge, she places a hand on one of the wires -- fist tightening against it, and summoning her lightning magic to jumpstart the fridge into working again.
Which, you know, it does work! But that doesn't mean one of the technicians isn't caught in the crossfire. Nope. This poor soul immediately yelps when the current comes back to the fridge, and falls back against the stone underneath. Rin immediately letting go of the wires, before she immediately rushes to the side of the technician to help them up again.
Anyone watching this spectacle can, and probably will get a good laugh with how strong that lightning current actually was, and how, if she didn't have control over it, probably could have killed the poor dude and destroyed the fridge.]
I am soooo sorry!
b. how to summon a spice demon
[Let's just say, after that fiasco, she's going to happily stay away from the fridges now, and do something that she's actually good at. Cooking. She could easily do that, right? She was a cook back home whenever she wasn't fighting, so batch cooking wouldn't be very difficult for her. In fact, it was a normal thing to do for the refugees and her friends back home, so when she's brought to one of the cooking stations, she happily takes over.
Anyone familiar with Rin's cooking knows that she's a fairly good cook. She likes to spice her food, albeit, uh. A bit too much, as someone might start to learn as she practically throws in every little bit of seasoning that she can. It's not overly salted, and in fact, the taste is just right for the people of Aldrip.
On the other hand, when she isn't cooking for the people of Aldrip, someone passing by will immediately smell, and feel how spiced her meal is. Awfully free-handed with her seasoning, as she makes herself a bowl of stew that could honestly summon a monster at this rate.]
Thanks for letting me use your spices again, old man! You really know how to make a lady happy.
ii.
a. we come in peace
[Rin had been itching for an adventure for quite some time. Now that she had the opportunity to leave Aldrip, she would do so, bringing her trusty katana with her so that she'll be protected on their journey. Luckily, she's used to adventuring like this back in her world, so the journey itself isn't any trouble. In fact, she'll happily carry someone on her back, or bridal style if they're tired during the journey.
Once arriving to the new area, Rin makes note of the naga people and how they resemble the mystics back at home. She's intrigued to say the least, and people who arrived with her will notice that she's surprisingly charming and articulates well with the naga people. Surprisingly great at bartering and trading with her job in the black market at home and all. She doesn't seem fearful of the naga either, despite their intimidating appearance.]
Oh man, you guys look really similar to the mystics back home!

Ritsu Shikishima | Caligula: Overdose
[Ritsu has multiple reasons for joining this expedition. 1. Diplomacy is undoubtedly his forte, so this just seems like the task he's most well-suited for. 2. He is very curious about what lies outside of Aldrip, so why pass up this chance to investigate for himself?
Fortunately, the task doesn't seem particularly difficult. Although the people of Rumpitur don't look like the friendliest of neighbors at first, they seem amenable enough to the idea of doing business with Aldrip. And just when Ritsu is about to breathe a sigh of relief, he spots a theft in progress.]
...What are you doing?
[His voice is soft, but although he has a smile on his face, his eyes are cold.]
or maybe we don't
[...And it keeps happening. Again and again, until Ritsu's patience really begins to wear thin. Which is why, if this is when he catches you trying to steal something, his usual friendly demeanor is absent.]
Say... Are you trying to sabotage us, or are you simply very stupid?
hold onto your valuables
[As night begins to fall, the forest suddenly seems a lot more sinister. He doesn't remember it seeming so unfriendly on the trip out, but then, the expedition had headed out with hope and a clear goal in their hearts. That was a factor that could very well have played a large part in making their surroundings seem a little brighter.
Now, with everyone just eager to find their way back home, it isn't so surprising that the road should seem longer and more fraught with danger.]
This place would be perfect for a test of courage.
[He grins a little, and because he's not the type who's scared of ghosts...]

Negotiations - Because Rinoa and wild schemes is a true OTP
You've got a very good eye, but I just can't agree to that trade I'm afraid. [Butter couldn't melt in her mouth, her tone the consummate negotiator.] You see, it just wouldn't suit your coloring. But, would you know it? I have exactly the scarf for you. Give me just one moment.
[She turns to dig through a pack, shooting Marianne a friendly wink as she moves. It doesn't take her long to find what she's looking for. And it is, indeed a very fine scarf in a lovely swirl of red and orange. She'd packed this bag purposefully you see, when they'd been told a bit about their trading partners. Holding it up towards the Rumpiturian in question, she nods sagely. Yes, look at her she's very smart and knowledgeable.]
Yes, I think that's much better. Plus, just looking at this scarf makes me feel a little warmer, don't you?
[Because of course, being the fashion conscious girl that she is, Rinoa is well aware of color theory. Red means warm. So wouldn't someone from a more cold blooded species appreciate that? That's fivehead thinking there.]

Izuku "Deku" Midoriya | My Hero Academia
[Izuku can best be described as a passable cook. He's not terrible and knows how to make a few things perfectly well, but no one is going to be blown away by his cooking and what he actually knows how to make on his own is limited pretty much entirely to the simpler dishes from nutrition education class. His cooking is plain, to put it bluntly. But plain food is still food, and what he lacks in precision and skill he more than makes up for in one very simple, unexpected way: he's been trained on the importance of knowing how to work as part of a cooking team for the express purpose of feeding a large group of people. Good heroes need to be able to provide aid to citizens during large-scale evacuations and rescue operations, and that includes helping make sure displaced people have something to eat.
So Izuku is wherever he's needed the most, doing whatever task allows him to do the most good. Setting up grills and piling logs for fires, cleaning fish and cutting meat and chopping vegetables, cooking some grilled fish or a simple stew, serving out portions to the hungry...and if there is anything needing doing that can help you cook, he's more than happy to do it. Need firewood, ingredients, or an extra set of hands? He's your guy!]
2) It's not real...right? | Not this shit again
[It's deep in the middle of the forest, and Izuku is having a bad time.
He started out doing okay. He's been in woods and forests before, so the occasional snapping and cracking in the distance wasn't too bad. That's just normal forest sounds, after all, twigs and small branches giving in the wind and animals moving through the underbrush. It was all fine.
And then the whispering started.
Those traveling with him can actually see him getting more and more anxious as time goes by, spending increasing amounts of time scanning the trees around them and moving up and down the group to check on everyone. Scanning the branches above them, as if something or someone might suddenly drop down in ambush. Checking the back of the group, as if simply being behind him is enough to cause people to disappear at a moment's notice.
Eventually he hits his limit. Maybe a whisper sounded particularly close, or particularly loud, or maybe it's an entirely new and deeply unsettling noise altogether; whatever it is, it's enough to make him suddenly grab your character by the arm.]
Did you hear that?
[He's far more tense than the situation really calls for...but the last time he was in a forest with a lot of people and things went wrong, things went really wrong. He's not taking chances.]
3) Wildcard
[Come at me! Izuku's mostly going to be helping out around Aldrip and escorting the Rumpitur trip. If you want to hash out something specific then reach out via PMs or at
Soup Kitchen Hero
Izuku is a busy little bee, isn't he? She watches him flit back and forth, ever consistently keeping himself busy. He might not be a professional (and frankly, neither is she), but he sure does seem to have a lot of heart. She also can't help appreciating that he doesn't mind getting into the grime when it comes to preparing fish. She's certain Law wouldn't take to it in the same way.
When she gets the chance, she decides that maybe there's something she can do to help him. If he's always going around helping everyone else, he won't get a chance to breathe, after all.]

Joel | OTA
[ Joel can cook if need be, sure, but they need something that isn't spoiled in order to do that, and frankly, there don't seem to be a lot of people here with actual hunting experience.
He wishes there was a good rifle to be found, but there just isn't one, and he's only got maybe ten bullets for his pistol. Luckily, they do have bows here, and he's decent enough with one to make it work. So that's what he's got - a bow, and a brace of arrows slung over his back, and he's stalking through the underbrush.
He spotted a deer - or at least, something resembling a deer enough to make no difference to him. It's got antlers, and hooves, and it's munching on some vegetation. So. Deer. Joel crouches low, patient as anything as he nocks an arrow. No sense startling it, after all. Silence is more important than being fast. He's...just...about...
Snap. Twang. A startled cry as the animal bolts. ]
Goddammit! I woulda had him!
[ Joel turns, annoyed, to whomever just ruined his shot. ]
2. Security detail
[ Joel is no negotiator. He would never volunteer for such a task. But a trek through a creepy forest that's probably full of wild animals or worse things, plus carrying a lot of valuables (and hopefully, on the way back, valuable food)? A setup like that needs security. And Joel is nothing if not good at protecting cargo.
You may catch him before leaving Aldrip, checking his pistol and stocking up on arrows for his bow. Or in the forest, patrolling the edges of the caravan as they go, on high alert for any threats.
Or on the way back, as things get darker and creepier, his shoulders tense with every snapped branch or distant cry. ]
The sooner we get out of here, the better.
3. Wildcard!
[ Got anything else you want to toss at me? Maybe he is cooking! Or confronting the Rumpiturians? I'm open to ideas! ]
1
he's unhappy, but alas. the moment he's about to pounce, paws sinking with intent against the grass--
a bunny. it was just a bunny, he smells it in the air, but it was enough for the deer to startle and run. he jumps off, but the words startle him in turn and he just flops on the grass.
sigh. sigh. sigh!!!)
It was just a bunny. It wasn't meant to be.

cloud strife — final fantasy vii remake
feel free to ping me at the cr meme if you have an idea, i'm happy to collaborate. )
open — we're starving here
[ He hears about it when he heads down from his inn room in the morning--the girl that usually runs the kitchens is an absolute mess, talking frantically to a group of locals about the situation around the town, and though he's tempted to brush past and head out for work, he hesitates. He's tended to some things like this, though mostly his hands have learned how to tune up a broken motorcycle or fix a broken heater, and he only knows minimally about the workings of a refrigerator, having taken to tinkering with Tifa's at the bar once or twice.
Will he be able to fix it right away? Probably not, but this girl is nearly in tears, and he feels like it would be irresponsible to walk away.
So he's in the back of the inn, where they have a modest kitchen, trying his luck on the small unit there. If he's successful, he might head over to the tavern to take a look at the ones there: start small, he figures, work his way up as needed. The tools they've offered to him are mostly familiar, though some of them do look a little strange--at least there's no risk of dousing himself with mako energy, here.
Wryly, he's sprawled out on the floor, his gloved hands stuffed into the open back of the refrigerator unit; there are bits and pieces scattered everywhere around him, and though he doesn't hear it, he can tell that he isn't alone. Frowning, he lets out a breath of frustration, reaching a hand around the side of the unit: ]
Hand me the... That. There. [ Right, that's going to get him what he needs. ] You know.
[ Honestly, he's the one that's embarrassed he forgot what some of these tools are called, but: fake it until you make it, that's Cloud Strife's motto. ]

Vholran Igniseri | Tales of Arise
[Vholran doesn't know what a "refrigerator" is but it doesn't take him long to figure out the basics. It's a tool that keeps food cold and safe for ingestion. Similar things were used around Dahna.
Once he realizes his powers could save the city he makes his way to a fountain in the center of a busy intersection and freezes it solid with his artes. He can be seen standing on the edge of the structure, shoulders back, chest forward in a regal stance, shouting at people who are gathering around him. Some are merchants eager to preserve their wares, many others are just here to see this man who is determined to make a spectacle of himself.]
If you need to preserve your stocks, I can preserve them.
[Vholran shouts in his cold voice.]
Unlike those frail machines, my power will not fail. All I ask is that you kneel and see me for who I am: Your superior. Your Lord.
[He lifts a hand and a glowing blue katana shimmers, forming from the ice crystals in the air around him and extending into his grip. He points the blade into the nearby crowd, singling people out, not caring if they are locals or fellow Chosen.]
You! Are you such a fool that you would sooner starve than bow your head!?
no subject
[ Insomuch that this pale-haired and whimsically dressed audience member literally looks like a fool, a clown, a jester if you will. As Gogol takes a step forward he lifts a hand like one does in a classroom. Since this guy here is giving off an immediately dangerous air the distance he steps forward from all the innocent by-standers isn't so far that he's easier target to smite for impudence without collateral.
Playing along sounds entertaining for the time being. So he stands ramrod straight with both feet primly pressed together. ]
I have a question for your greatness. Any objections?

Galaxia | Sailor Moon
[Galaxia accompanied the expedition mostly because she wanted to explore more of the land, and see what's out there. She can't leave anyway (she tried), so she might as well see if there's anything interesting around. This place isn't any worse than her home planet at least.
The people of Rumpitur are ...
Not super interesting. Not incredibly out of the ordinary, but also not super common. What is interesting is there being more than one type of people on the planet. That is uncommon. Most worlds are full of humans or full of something else.
She still scoffs while looking at one, who may or may not have gotten offended by her reaction (or maybe they were just taken off guard?), but Galaxia doesn't seem to notice or care.
Instead she moves towards where one has some weapons and picks up a sword. Just to look at it, as she's not really one to use weapons. (She's never needed to). Though she does glance from the weapon in her hands to one of the naga considering what it might be like to just stab one.]
B - HOLD ONTO YOUR VALUABLES
[There is something about the forest, the stories have that much right, though Galaxia isn't sure she'd agree with the so-called 'holy' grounds aspect of it. Only one place is truly holy and this isn't it. But it does have something ...
If only she could tell what that is. While she can sense somethings, she's unfortunately not all seeing. This also extends to the possibility of getting lost, though she's arrogant enough to believe she'll find her way.
The sounds however ... She's not afraid, but they are unsettling in a way. At one noise she stops to spin around, peering through the dark to hopefully find the source.]
Who goes there?
[If it comes down to it, she'll just light the whole forest on fire. That will get rid of the strange sounds.]
C - WILDCARD
[Feel free to poke her anywhere, or contact me at
A
(She and Vholran, it seems, would likely be very entertaining to watch with one another...)
She doesn't outright interrupt or violate that personal space, whatever the case might be. For the time being, all she does is observe. She doesn't truly know what to think of a woman like her. Strong and resilient, without a doubt. A bit aloof and unwelcoming. Difficult to speak to or with. But enigmatic, which is a credit to her person. Sometimes there are more things to a person than what the outside holds, however.
Kisara can't help being curious over anything that might be beneath the rest of that.]
You like swords? [She finally asks as she decides to encroach on Galaxia's thoughts.] I could see that. Swords are graceful and quick. I think one would match you well.

balthier | final fantasy xii
ii. it's only the wind (pessiria forest)
iii. wildcard
i
Is Balthier the type of person to do that? She'd like to think he's not, but she also suspects that there's a great deal more to him than what she knows at present. If anything, all people have lines they're willing to cross and all people are capable of being very much selfish or self-indulgent. More so when it comes to someone who's had to fight for everything they have.
It would be hard for her to completely put him at fault. After all, old habits die hard, don't they.
Stalking after him at a fair distance, having to hide amongst other things along the way, Aerith finally pauses just outside of the entrance, poking her head in. It's an impressive collection, for sure, but it's not theirs. The people of Rumpitur are going to need those things at some point...
And he sounds just a little too happy about taking some of it off the hands of the naga.]
Don't you dare.

He assumes that many among their number will be planning to head to Rumpitur, as well— he would not be surprised to find any of his companions among the team when they prepare to set out, but there is something in him that is intent on this being a decision he makes on his own, rather than simply following the others.
This is something he can do. Diplomacy, for a good cause— an opportunity to prove to himself, if not others, that all of his time playing politician had not been a waste.
Considering himself suitably prepared, he heads out to join the team being assembled— or such is his intent, but he doesn't even make it out of the inn before he crosses paths with Kisara when he descends to the lobby. He startles, briefly, then gives a bow of his head before he steps aside to allow her a clear path to the stairs, gesturing for her to go on ahead.]

So, without hesitating, he already has a plate in his hand. The other hand reaching for a fork, and stabbing into the chicken to see how done it is. Ethlyn | Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War
[Ethlyn has regarded the presence of refrigerators as a minor miracle. Cold, fresh milk that lasts for a week without the slightest souring! Meat that can be kept for months without being salted or packed into sausages! Vegetables that last without being pickled! Even the unexpected delight of keeping water so cold that it almost hurt her teeth the first time astonished her.
And then--it's all gone in a flash.
If the situation weren't so dire, Ethlyn might find some amusement in being thrown back to the sort of resources she's used to, but the fact is she doesn't have enough cooking experience. Oh, she's pitched in at camp, but when it comes to preservation--salting, smoking, pickling--others have taken care of that her whole life.
That's why she has a small pile of elderly-looking books, some handwritten, others with pages missing, on "outdated" food preparation. And on the other side of the counter are her gathered supplies: preserves jars, salt, vinegar, and some freshly gathered mushrooms and game meat from the woods]
We can't be careless here--there's no point in building up an emergency supply of food if it's just going to make everyone sick.
Off to see the Naga
[Ethlyn didn't expect to ever see people who were half-snake. It's something out of a story, and a story to frighten children at that. But she remembers how to keep her composure, and the longer she spends in Rumpitur, the less strange it seems.
In between negotiating sessions--a little tiring--she finds someone else from Aldrip to chat to.]
I'm a little worried about bargaining for more seafood. After all, that's what got us into this trouble in the first place.
[On the other hand, if Ethlyn notices someone carrying off goods that they have not bargained for in good faith, she's going to fall into step with them on the path out of the settlement.]
What do you have there?
Headcount
[Dark woods don't hold any supernatural fears in Jugdral--just ordinary ones, like bears and bandits. Ghost stories are just that, stories. So Ethlyn tells herself sternly as her eyes sweep from side to side, using her position on horseback to check for any danger--there's certainly no risk of feeling new complacent here.
But something pulls at the feeling in the back of her mind and she reins up suddenly.]
Wait--something isn't right. [Her finger moves, tallying...] Is this everyone we left with?

Abe no Seimei | original (omyouji)
[ Seimei has learned a few things over his centuries of life, but repairing machinery is definitely not on that list. He is walking from restaurant to tavern to inn, checking each one and asking about the status of their units. Of course, they all confirm the same issue. Those Who Were There will help us, one passerby tells him. We just need to be patient. But if you know how to fix them- He tells her he doesn't and steps out, standing outside of one of the taverns puzzling over the problem. ]
This timing is a little too convenient, isn't it? Is it really okay for us to interfere?
ii. What do snakes like?
[Seimei volunteers for the expedition with perhaps more enthusiasm than he's had yet. The chance to meet more people, especially when the Aldrip locals describe the villagers of Rumpitur, immediately gets Seimei to join. Not that he himself has anything great to trade, but he's happy to tag along with the merchants.
After spending some time exploring the village, Seimei manages to trade for some fish for a meal.]
It's a large place. I wonder who their gods are?
iii. Pessiria Spooks
[After returning from the journey to Rumpitur and hearing about several people being missing from the count, Seimei just can't let it go. He specifically scans the streets of Aldrip for Chosen that look interested in the news and perhaps seem doubtful of the explanations given--being tough also doesn't hurt. While they are listening to the expedition leaders giving their answers or if they look like they're lingering, Seimei approaches them.]

Wen Kexing | Word of Honor
[ So, machines are cool. The last big machines Wen Kexing saw had explosives inside! Those were especially fun. He volunteers to help some bakery repair their broken refrigerator unit, but in all honesty he has no idea how the thing works. After some other people handle disassembly and expose the internal workings, all spread out on a cloth, Wen Kexing is no closer to understanding what it does.
So, looking at the mess, he picks up a wrench and starts knocking on some of the metal where the tubing and wires connect. ]
Come on, do something! This doesn't even fit. That's why it's broken.
[ He's angrily making it worse. Pretty soon they'll also have to fix a hole in the unit. ]
ii. Campfire cooking with no patience
[ The locals (and maybe also other Chosen?) have wisely decided Wen Kexing is probably better off not trying to fix the units. He's disappointed, because he wanted to learn more about the big machines, but Wen Kexing settles for hunting and cooking--mostly because he also wants to eat. It doesn't take too long to catch some fish and a rabbit or two, and after foraging for what looks like reasonably safe wild vegetables, Wen Kexing has set up a camping station of his own in the corner of Aldrip, smoking some of the meat and frying the rest with whatever he could find. It's very improvised, but it's not spoiled.
He still looks annoyed. ]
The plants here are all weird. How am I supposed to make anything? We don't know what they are.
[ If anyone wants an experimental dinner, he seems to have made enough for a small family at least. He'll probably make you do chores. ]
iii. Gonna punch ghosts!
[ Wen Kexing went on the trading run mostly for the chance of different food. He's disappointed when the variety is not really what he expected, especially for a village that large and impressive looking, but the Rumpiturans seem to be simple people. Or whatever they are. Not humans like the Aldrip locals, but they also seem peaceful--and maybe that makes the trip worth it?
He's still trying to convince himself of that when they make their way back through the forest. Going in had been fine. But as night falls and darkness closes in, he can't sleep. Snapping twigs and shuffling seem to come from every direction, skulking around the group while the rest sleep. Wen Kexing takes a torch and stalks out into the trees like an angry dog, snarling when one whisper comes in from the side. ]
Who's there?! Come out now, or I'll drag you out and break your arms!
iv. Wildcard
[ Anything you want to thread out, feel free to throw my way. If you have more specific things you'd like to plot with Wen Kexing, you can PM me or message me at
ii
But even that can't stop him from finding Wen Kexing like a lodestone the moment he's back in the city proper. Lucky for him that the oversized riot of color is usually pretty easy to find. He saunters over, a fair-sized bird swinging from his hands, and is careful to stay out of Wen Kexing's sight lines while he does it. It won't stop the man from noticing someone coming, but it is amusing to try and surprise him at least a little. ]
What are you whining about now? [ Is how he announces himself, dropping the bird at Wen Kexing's feet not unlike a cat presenting a dead mouse. ]

Runyu | Ashes of Love
{The terseness of their speech doesn't keep Runyu away. He watches the bartering and follows the strange race back to their homes, familiarizing himself with their way of life. Are they like dragons? How would he know? Are they like fish, then? He understands that life much better. And yet, there are differences... peculiarities.
He makes his way back to the main group in a flash of blue light, holding a smooth stone in the palm of his hand. Occasionally he observes it - a stone worn away by water - and his thumb caresses it.}
Do they come from the depths?
{Dreams}
{He rarely lets himself slumber, but fatigue gets the better of him despite his best efforts. He rests on his side, his cheek pillowed on his arm. Usually he dreams of starlight and what he can't have. Tonight is different. Strange visions plague him and he cries out in his sleep:}
Xufeng! Jinmi!
{Missing}
{The missing souls bother him - not enough is being done! Not by half.}
We must find them. I encourage the strongest to follow me.
{If they have been kidnapped or if they fell into some trap, he will be the hardest to tie down with them.}
I will not leave them to starve.
goro akechi | p5r
[You know. For being someone who's lived all by himself for past few years and had to learn to fetch for himself you'd think that Akechi would know how to cook.
...Well, about that. With being so focused on his work (both as a detective and assassin) he's barely had time to pick up cooking. Akechi's never been too interested in food either, relying on eating out or pre-made bento boxes from konbini. As long he's gotten all the needed nutrients he's been satisfied. But here is, donned in an apron and more or less forced to learn to how to prepare food for a bunch of people without proper preparation.
But it shouldn't be too hard, right? Cooking can't be that complicated. All that one needs to do is just to follow the recipe step by step (too bad that there's not really a cook book available, oops). He's a
n ex-detective! He defs got this.Hahaha... ha, yeah. There's a foul odor coming from the 'stew' (or whatever it is that he's trying to make here), as if something was burning. But for his credit he does simmer the pot and tries adding the water to make it better but yeah. There's no salvaging the mess he's making here.
RIP everyone.]
I'M TIRED OF THESE M-FUCKING THIEVES
[Okay. Goro Akechi can't cook. Big deal. And he's not too savvy with electronics either. But you know what he's actually good at? Diplomacy! Hell yeah, time for The Detective Prince to be useful.
It also helps that this is hardly his first time seeing Naga as the metaverse is practically full of them. The negotiations with the snake people goes rather smoothly as Akechi shows them his best side, not giving them any reason to doubt that he's previously killed their kind for the sport. And really, luckily for them the locals seem to be way too good-natured for their own sake, willing to trade away the essential goods so easily. Though, Akechi can see the benefits of it. Keeping up peaceful relationship between the settlements is nothing but good politics.
Maybe that's why it irks him to see that some people are not even trying to hide the fact that they're taking a few extra souvenirs with them. Sure, in other situation Akechi wouldn't really care about it and just blame the Naga for trusting the strangers so blindly and making it so easy to be taken advantage of. But now this act of petty thievery has the potential to endanger all the work they've done so far.
So, when he catches someone red-handed he lets out a frustrated sigh and approaches the perpetrator in the question]
I don't think that belongs to you.
WILDCARD
you know how this goes! hmu with your starter :D
I'M TIRED OF
Gogol is no altruist after all. What he is, though, is bored. So as he twirls around to face Akechi he starts juggling some of the apples he's in the middle of pinching. ]
Don't think so or don't know so? Let's hear some conviction!
