{EVENT #1} ADVERSITY 131425.845119

THUS DO WE HUNGER

MOD NOTES:

Welcome to the first event!

Please direct any questions to the corresponding comment below. Note that characters can be involved in multiple prompts (whether you choose to thread that out or not), and that character decisions and actions taken on these prompts will affect future events, storylines, and relationships with other peoples of Expiation.

In two weeks from this event, the moderator team will be posting a poll on the OOC community that will allow players to share what actions their characters took and two weeks after that, there will be an announcement made sharing said results, how those actions have impacted the state of the world, the game's story, what information can be used ICly, and so on.

The various prompts are, of course, optional, so you're not required to travel to Rumpitur if you don't wish to. You're not required to help the locals or other Chosen during the food shortage. There is an option to simply not be involved, and that too can have potential repercussions on the future of the game's overarching story and other characters.

WE'RE STARVING HERE!

HOW TO REPAIR A REFRIGERATOR 101

Do you remember the fishing tournament where a variety of locals and Chosen alike submitted a bunch of fish for a very modest and unimpressive wooden sculpture? Well... about that...

Aldrip's refrigeration has catastrophically failed and as a result, the food stores that the locals have been keeping are now on the verge of total and utter collapse. The townspeople are in an absolute uproar. According to them, this has never happened before and though they would normally just pray to Those Who Were There for a resolution, they kind of need something immediate. Otherwise, all residents of Aldrip are facing the very real threat of starvation.

The good news is that you can help!

The more handy of the Aldrip townsfolk are going to get right to work on repairing the refrigeration units. At present, the only units that exist belong to those who are making food and providing them to the townspeople. This means people like the tavern keepers, the inn, bakers, and other miscellaneous cooks, are those who possess and control these refrigeration units. If you've got some handyman skills, put them to work, though be aware that working on repairing the technological malfunction might just be an electrifying experience. Literally.

THE ALTERNATIVE TO COOKING MAMA

There sure has been a lot of opportunities to cook, but now Aldrip needs cooks and would-be cooks like never before!

Those not necessarily good with repair work might find themselves better suited for hunting the local wildlife, whether that's on the meadowland plains or taking, yet again, a fishing pole into hand. A good deal of the meat, vegetables, and fruit that was already preserved has spoiled and will need to be replaced hastily if people want to continue eating.

With bodies going to retrieve replacement food, there's suddenly an open and demand for people who either already have experience with cooking or just really want to learn. There's no better way to learn than some truly hands-on experience. For those with some cooking in their background, even if it's simple at its best, the kitchens are free and available. You might not have your choice cuts of meat or whatever else you might be accustomed to preparing, but fortunately the dried spices and herbs aren't impacted by the food shortage. Consider making something flavourful or just really spicy. (Alphen, we're looking at you.)

If you haven't cooked before and you're one of those who's just dying to learn, pair up with a buddy in the kitchen, or fumble along. Beggars can't be choosers, after all, and we're facing a crisis. Maybe the threat of having no food will encourage people to try whatever you make, no matter how black, crispy brown it might turn out.

The more innovative and creative individuals may find a way to dry / dehydrate anything caught or harvested. Or we can just have a huge impromptu grilling adventure where people hold raw meat over fire. Your choice!

WE'RE OFF TO SEE... THE NAGA?

WE COME IN PEACE

Aldrip is hardly the only settlement on the continent of Expiation and though the various peoples of these settlements can often stick within their own, when times are hard and adversity encroaches on livelihood, they're not against seeking the aid of others. Some of the more well-travelled of the Aldrip locals are planning an expedition to visit Rumpitur, an impressively-sized village on a peninsula to the east of Aldrip.

They are ready and willing to take all volunteers who are interested in accompanying them to barter for food and other potentially needed supplies. The visit to Rumpitur will require travel through the Pessiria Forest, a thick veil of trees that one can be easily lost in, but if everyone's together, then it shouldn't be an issue.

Consider joining the expedition and getting to know some of Expiation's other peoples.

Rumpitur is home to a race of naga-like people with scaled features, tails, sharp teeth, and forked tongues. Their way of life is considerably more simple in comparison to some of Aldrip's fancier advancements. They are skilled combatants and a fishing people, whose diet primarily consists of seafood. In Rumpitur, one may take note of their many-in-number stone constructs, depicting a notable and perhaps significant naga.

Although they may seem intimidating at first glance and can have terse ways of speaking, they are amicable enough and will be willing to do business with Aldrip and her citizens.

OR MAYBE WE DON'T

The visit from Aldrip, which is a rare occurrence indeed, results in much confusion for the Rumpiturian people, and this may or may not be considered a blessing to those who could be more unscrupulous in nature.

Although the visit to Rumpitur is meant to be one of peace, locals of Aldrip and the Chosen alike have the opportunity to steal supplies from the people. If they choose to do this, they may find that there are no immediate repercussions for this course of action. The likelihood is that this visit has caught the Rumpiturians so off-guard that they're not expecting to be robbed. Of course, how this will impact things in the future remains to be seen...

Individuals may grab as much as they can carry, depending on what they've brought with them. The locals of Aldrip who planned this expedition provided convenient-to-carry containers that can be filled with anything retrieved from the village and her kind. Larger containers will require at least two people to carry when filled, so perhaps you're inclined to work with a partner-in-crime. Just remember that for every action, there's a consequence, even if you're not seeing it right away!

Rumpitur will not notice that they are missing inventory until well after Aldrip has left and travels back through the forest to town, so no one need fear the chasing and hissing of snakes into Pessiria.

Probably.

HOLD ONTO YOUR VALUABLES

IT'S NOT REAL... RIGHT?

Those who've decided to brave the forest will find on their adventure to Rumpitur that it's rather straight forward and proceeds without incident.

The sky above the trees is a difficult thing to see, blocked out by the way the evergreens stretch and imposingly tower above. At times light may scatter through various openings in branches, but it is a largely darker atmosphere, and at night requires the assistance of candlelight or related.

Travellers with the courage to make way through the forest with the others may hear occasional snaps, cracks, whispers, and more enigmatic sounds that are difficult to justify with logic. Of course, whether this is all in the head or something truly more sinister at play is up for debate. Despite the strange occurrences that one may experience, no members of the Chosen will find themselves harmed or otherwise physically disturbed initially. That said, some may later find themselves haunted by strange dreams and visions of the forest in the future if they are especially sensitive to such things.

Were those sounds real? Were you just hearing things? It's probably wisest not to investigate further. At least, maybe not now...

COUNT YOUR NUMBERS

Aldrip has a great many stories about Pessiria Forest and many of the other towns, landmarks, settlements, and people scattered across the continent. Most of these stories seem to depict folklore or a certain mythological feeling about them, implying that many of the locals don't truly believe in any of the more macabre tales. Pessiria Forest has no shortage of poetry and song that pertains to its supposedly 'holy' grounds and mysterious happenstances.

There are several alleged accounts about people having gone missing in the forest, due to how complicated it is to navigate by one's self. The more people travelling together, the safer it is purported to be.

Before leaving for Rumpitur, heads have been counted to ensure that wherever they start is also where they end up, however, for the more observant, one may find that the returning party is short of a few heads. Maybe some of them stayed behind to further the diplomatic efforts with the Rumpiturians. Maybe they're going to catch up later. Maybe they took a different pathway through the forest with some of their mates. Maybe there's something more untoward going on.

If this is brought up to the locals, the leaders of the expedition will warily make note of it and conduct their own investigation. At least, they say they will. Either way, it's suspicious no matter how you may turn it. Perhaps put heads together with another and see if you're just miscounting.

i.
a. how to repair a fridge, rin style
[Rin owed it to some of the vendors here that allowed her to use their kitchens so she could treat her friends to a nice meal. So, the least she could do was try to fix their fridges. Or at least, attempt to, with what little she knew about fixing fridges and appliances in general. There would be an attempt, as she uses her height to easily glance over at what wires she could see. Unfortunately, knowing nothing about what wiring would fix what, she takes a guess and tries to move about some wiring in an attempt to fix it.

She fails, of course, and the next course of action is something she thought might help this whole situation. This is Rin, though, and she doesn't quite use her brain. So, when she makes her way back to the fridge, she places a hand on one of the wires -- fist tightening against it, and summoning her lightning magic to jumpstart the fridge into working again.

Which, you know, it does work! But that doesn't mean one of the technicians isn't caught in the crossfire. Nope. This poor soul immediately yelps when the current comes back to the fridge, and falls back against the stone underneath. Rin immediately letting go of the wires, before she immediately rushes to the side of the technician to help them up again.

Anyone watching this spectacle can, and probably will get a good laugh with how strong that lightning current actually was, and how, if she didn't have control over it, probably could have killed the poor dude and destroyed the fridge.]

I am soooo sorry!

b. how to summon a spice demon
[Let's just say, after that fiasco, she's going to happily stay away from the fridges now, and do something that she's actually good at. Cooking. She could easily do that, right? She was a cook back home whenever she wasn't fighting, so batch cooking wouldn't be very difficult for her. In fact, it was a normal thing to do for the refugees and her friends back home, so when she's brought to one of the cooking stations, she happily takes over.

Anyone familiar with Rin's cooking knows that she's a fairly good cook. She likes to spice her food, albeit, uh. A bit too much, as someone might start to learn as she practically throws in every little bit of seasoning that she can. It's not overly salted, and in fact, the taste is just right for the people of Aldrip.

On the other hand, when she isn't cooking for the people of Aldrip, someone passing by will immediately smell, and feel how spiced her meal is. Awfully free-handed with her seasoning, as she makes herself a bowl of stew that could honestly summon a monster at this rate.]

Thanks for letting me use your spices again, old man! You really know how to make a lady happy.

ii.
a. we come in peace
[Rin had been itching for an adventure for quite some time. Now that she had the opportunity to leave Aldrip, she would do so, bringing her trusty katana with her so that she'll be protected on their journey. Luckily, she's used to adventuring like this back in her world, so the journey itself isn't any trouble. In fact, she'll happily carry someone on her back, or bridal style if they're tired during the journey.

Once arriving to the new area, Rin makes note of the naga people and how they resemble the mystics back at home. She's intrigued to say the least, and people who arrived with her will notice that she's surprisingly charming and articulates well with the naga people. Surprisingly great at bartering and trading with her job in the black market at home and all. She doesn't seem fearful of the naga either, despite their intimidating appearance.]

Oh man, you guys look really similar to the mystics back home!

[personal profile] oracledriven 2023-03-17 04:31 pm (UTC)(link)
i. damage control [aldrip]
a. [The spread of tools and spare parts is...intimidating, to say the very least. It had taken very little time for one of the locals to desperately seek out help, and Noel is the hapless bystander who happened along first. The local in question is currently half-talking, half-whispering prayers to their nebulous local deities as she frantically looks for loose wires, and somehow that's what finally gets him frustrated enough to take charge. Pray? They're going to pray? Do they not realize how serious this is?

Food shortage. Of course it had to be something like that, he thinks bitterly, eyeing the device. He might not be able to help with the absolute mess of the circuit panel—electronics aren't exactly his thing—but he can help with storage, at least. He pulls open the refrigerator door and casts a quick blizzard spell on the contents. When the mist settles, he examines the contents—things may be frozen solid, now, but in a situation like this...isn't that the goal? He shuts the door firmly.]

Don't open that door unless you need to. Understand? Let the cold out, and it'll melt faster.

b. [Noel Kreiss is no cook. Or perhaps it'd be more accurate to say he's no gourmand, because right now, tending to the extremely large stock pot over a fire, he sort of does look like a cook. The kid may not know much about flavor, or seasonings, or hell, maybe even vegetables, but he sure does know how to make a broth that'll leave you feeling full for a few hours.

The pot is filled with bones, and honestly, it doesn't smell half bad. But he issues an apologetic shake of his head if you come looking for a cupful.]

Sorry. Not there yet.

ii. last hunter [forest, fields]
a. [The locals might be in a panic, but Noel is pretty focused, at this point. Food shortages...that's something he knows all too well, unfortunately, and hunting for his own food is second nature. Granted, he's never been asked to provide food for this many people—how many people were in their settlement at its height, anyway? ten? twenty?—but it's all the same. Something is better than nothing.

It's been ages since he's tried using a trap, so he foregoes that method altogether, seeking out a few more aggressive creatures instead: he finds a pack of wolves near the forest. No more than five, maybe six...not hard to deal with. He draws his swords, but the sound of footsteps makes him pause, looking for their source. He only makes eye contact with you for a second before turning his attention back to his prey.]

Two choices. [One of the wolves utters a low growl as he speaks.] Grab a weapon, or clear out if you're not looking for a fight.

[So what's it gonna be, stranger?]

b. [Just piling up animal meat isn't going to be enough in this case—he doesn't even have to go back to town to understand that. So he spends the rest of the afternoon skinning the creatures and slicing the meat into strips small enough to dry out in the sun. It's not pretty work, but it's better than watching people starve to death. He's getting ready to drape them over his makeshift rack when—] Wh—no! [—a particularly harsh breeze picks up and knocks the whole damn thing over.

If you're nearby with free hands that maybe aren't covered in gore, mind lending a hand?]

we come in peace

[Ritsu has multiple reasons for joining this expedition. 1. Diplomacy is undoubtedly his forte, so this just seems like the task he's most well-suited for. 2. He is very curious about what lies outside of Aldrip, so why pass up this chance to investigate for himself?

Fortunately, the task doesn't seem particularly difficult. Although the people of Rumpitur don't look like the friendliest of neighbors at first, they seem amenable enough to the idea of doing business with Aldrip. And just when Ritsu is about to breathe a sigh of relief, he spots a theft in progress.]

...What are you doing?

[His voice is soft, but although he has a smile on his face, his eyes are cold.]

or maybe we don't

[...And it keeps happening. Again and again, until Ritsu's patience really begins to wear thin. Which is why, if this is when he catches you trying to steal something, his usual friendly demeanor is absent.]

Say... Are you trying to sabotage us, or are you simply very stupid?

hold onto your valuables

[As night begins to fall, the forest suddenly seems a lot more sinister. He doesn't remember it seeming so unfriendly on the trip out, but then, the expedition had headed out with hope and a clear goal in their hearts. That was a factor that could very well have played a large part in making their surroundings seem a little brighter.

Now, with everyone just eager to find their way back home, it isn't so surprising that the road should seem longer and more fraught with danger.]

This place would be perfect for a test of courage.

i. i've been called out, so of course i have to do this [aldrip]
[When it comes to fixing tech, Alphen is absolutely not your man. He took one look at the wires and noped out. What were you expecting him to do, anyway? Bang two rocks together and see what happens? So he avoids the electrical issues altogether and instead opts to put his cooking skills to good use. Clearly, no one was there to warn anyone about this—which is understandable, really, when things are this hectic. You all know what that means. You have three options, laid out in the following subprompts:]

a. [Alphen has made something that tastes either slightly burnt, just spicy enough to be tolerable, or quite salty. Aside from that, it's edible, and it doesn't even taste that bad. It's just that the flavor profile is pretty one-note and the meat is slightly on the tougher side.]

b. [Congratulations! You rolled the dice and got death by spicy! You take one bite and it's like literal fire in your mouth. As soon as it hits your tongue, you know you have made a serious, potentially life-altering mistake. You will never look at spicy food the same way. You are forever changed. Your sinuses may never be the same. Gods help you.]

c. [I'm sorry to tell you that Alphen has made roasted chicken. The cooking site is quite smoky, at this point, with a pungent scent in the air; on the other hand, the taste on this chicken…honestly, could be worse. There's a lot of flavoring on the outside, which has burnt a bit, so you'll pick up very faint hints of charcoal, spice, salt, and some seasonings that really would've made sense if they hadn't been overcooked like this. Hey, it could be worse, right?

Little do you know. Later, when you go out looking to hunt or get through the forest, you will be easier to find and more tempting to attack by creatures ranging from divebombing crows to hungry wolves, curious zeugles monsters, and anything in between. You've been given the Dark Mark stat effect, and for the next few hours, you're a walking aggro pull. On the bright side, Alphen is in the same predicament. Maybe you're even adventuring together, and have someone to fight alongside you.]

ii. spooky hours [forest]
[Somewhere between Rumpitur and Aldrip, some of the local expedition party members had gone missing. Alphen is one of the people who volunteers to go looking for them, attempting to retrace their steps through the forest and bring them home. Whether he's alone or your character is paired with him, this becomes quite a thorough journey—there is absolutely no trace of the missing people.

It's dusk when he (or both of you) finally decides to call it a day. Maybe they'll try again tomorrow. But the way back is proving to be trickier than the way there, and the forest plays tricks at twilight. A snapping branch, a rustling of leaves—Alphen stops at the sudden sound, training his ears on it.]

Someone there?

[Maybe one of the missing locals? Or a fellow lookout who might have had better luck? He can hope.]

[ As the expedition prepares to set out, Marianne helps to pack the saddlebags of the horses handpicked to make the trek with them. Pottery, tools, textiles and other non-edibles the townspeople have gathered to barter with, loaded onto the backs of the strongest horses from the stables where Marianne has been working during her time in Aldrip. ]

[ When it comes to bartering with the Rumpiturians, Marianne stands back to let the more talkative people take the lead. Though she keeps quiet, she's observing how the most confident and shrewd negotiators work, hoping she can learn something from them. As the future leader of her territory, she imagines she'll have to carry out negotiations with her own neighbors someday... ]

[ Eventually, one of the Rumpiturians takes notice of Marianne hovering in the background and points to a pretty blue scarf wrapped around Marianne's shoulders, her snake eyes keen. The scarf for three days worth of food. A more than generous trade, no? ]

[ Saddlebags filled with food after successful negotiations, the expedition is in good spirits as they lead the horses back through the forest. That is until strange noises beset them in the distance. The cracking of dry leaves. Rustling in the bushes. Whistling between the trees. Marianne strokes the mane of a startled packhorse as she leads him by the reins, whispering soothingly. ]

Shhh, it's alright. It's just the wind.

[ Probably. ]

[ The party picks up their pace as night sets in and darkness closes in on them. When a branch falls from a tree and thuds onto the ground, one of the packhorses rears its head and takes off with a frightened neigh.

After calling for the missing animal to no avail, most of the expedition elects to press on. They reason nothing good will come of lingering, and people are waiting for food back in Aldrip. But Marianne volunteers to stay and look, and she glances around at the grim faces around her, her pleading eyes searching for anyone who feels similarly. ]

You've got a very good eye, but I just can't agree to that trade I'm afraid. [Butter couldn't melt in her mouth, her tone the consummate negotiator.] You see, it just wouldn't suit your coloring. But, would you know it? I have exactly the scarf for you. Give me just one moment.

[She turns to dig through a pack, shooting Marianne a friendly wink as she moves. It doesn't take her long to find what she's looking for. And it is, indeed a very fine scarf in a lovely swirl of red and orange. She'd packed this bag purposefully you see, when they'd been told a bit about their trading partners. Holding it up towards the Rumpiturian in question, she nods sagely. Yes, look at her she's very smart and knowledgeable.]

Yes, I think that's much better. Plus, just looking at this scarf makes me feel a little warmer, don't you?

[Because of course, being the fashion conscious girl that she is, Rinoa is well aware of color theory. Red means warm. So wouldn't someone from a more cold blooded species appreciate that? That's fivehead thinking there.]

Sephiroth | The Compilation of Final Fantasy VII

[personal profile] iravehementi 2023-03-17 09:07 pm (UTC)(link)
i. Rumpitur / ...Or Maybe We Don't
[Sephiroth had been sitting lotus style at the base of a massive crystal beneath Lorentia Cave in silent meditation. His astral projection wandered Aldrip, listening to snippets of conversation and watching panicked citizens comment on a food crisis. None if it had been interesting. If Aldrip starved to death over night, Sephiroth would have felt nothing.

But then he heard about an expedition being sent out to a nearby settlement, one occupied by Naga. This, he thought, was interesting. Unfortunately his illusions and astral projections couldn't travel so far from his body. If he wanted to see this new people, it would have to be with his own flesh and blood eyes.

So he has come to Rumpitur with the other travelers. He walks silently around the stone buildings, seemingly lost in thought but always very aware of his surroundings. Sometimes, he notices people tucking away valuables and quietly follows them until he has the opportunity to step out into a path or a street, blocking their way forward.

He eyes them and smiles.]

Find anything?

ii. It's Not Real...Right?
[The journey back to Aldrip is much more interesting to Sephiroth than the one to Rumpitur. All around him he sees, hears and feels the creaks and moans of the forest in a way simple logic can't explain.

Magic, he thinks to himself. Professor Hojo used to chastise him for his fondness for terms like "magic" and "special powers", arguing that every phenomenon could be explained by science. Sephiroth sees things differently. Magic exists and it is everywhere. He knows this as a creature who, himself, exists beyond the limits of scientific reason.

As such a creature, he is insatiably curious about phenomena he can't easily explain. So he quickly wanders off from the group, vanishing into the darkness of the forest.

It is not enough to see how the forest reacts to his presence, however. He wants to know how it will react to others. People might see illusions in the distance: Dancing lights, humanoid figures, shifting creatures, and children running off into the foliage. Whatever the illusion is, it will quickly lead them to the base of a vast tree where, at first, nothing happens. But are those black feathers drifting down from the branches?]

If someone handy were able to fix the some of the fridges but say...add a couple of upgrades to them (like idk a water and ice dispensers or things that probably don't need to be dispensed via a lever but are just fun), would that be feasible?

And if someone were to pursue some of the missing headcountees (or specifically are on the look out for ghosties), is there anything specific about the forests from the nightmares that we could pick out? Is there anything from the poetry and songs that would be a clue as to what might be behind folks missing or if there's a way to appease the creatures in the forests?

[Sephiroth is crouched like a gargoyle on a sturdy lower branch, his considerable weight braced against the trunk

A simple cantrip has turned him invisible but the dark feathers continue to swirl from the wing he'd used to lift him up into the canopy.

When Vi wanders close he lets the invisibility fall slowly away, revealing first his bright, cat-like eyes gleaming in the shadows then the rest of him, clothed in black leather. It's a dramatic reveal but he enjoys a bit of dramatic flair. He would conjure storms just for mood lighting.

Once he's certain he's captured her attention he lifts a gloved finger to his lips. All around them the trees seem to rustle, their pine needles rattling together in a way that sounds at once like a breeze and like a chorus of susurrus voices.]

[ Honestly, the breaking of all the fridges in one go feels like a blessing in disguise for the Doctor. No, it isn't because he's read almost every piece of literature he could find in Aldrip. It also doesn't have anything to do with the fact that he was probably about this close to breaking what little technology there was in Aldrip so he could put it back together himself just for the hell of it either. And it definitely has nothing to do with the fact that Clara has seemingly disappeared so he needs to find a way to fill the Clara-shaped void left behind. No way in any parallel universe is it that last thing.

As a result, you might run into him in any number of scenarios. If you're having trouble puzzling together your particular fridge, the Doctor may appear with his own toolkit and jaunty goggles with his own set of helpful (or unhelpful) suggestions. Pardon the backseat driving, but apparently he thinks he knows better. ]

You're really not supposed to put that piece there. That's an air filter not an evaporator fan.

[ Alternatively you might find him surrounded by tools but really only using one (if guessed his sonic screwdriver, you're right). He's either in the process of putting the fridge together and looking for a part, or it looks like the fridge he's working on seems mostly put together and functioning. So why is he still working on it, you might ask? ]

These fridges are so boring! What do you think about a sonic fridge?

[ New town? New people? Go on, twist his arm. It doesn't take much for the Doctor to be persuaded to leave Aldrip's city limits and he seems positively enthusiastic to do so. For such an old looking man, he's certainly got a spring in his step that gives off the air of a man far younger than the 2000+ years he is.

His bag is brimming with various odds and ends for bartering (apparently he's agreed to being a middle-man for one or several of the merchants). How successful he is at actually bartering is anyone's guess and he might need a little help because he's rather shit at it. Otherwise, his attention is drawn by one of the large stone constructs that he's furiously sketching into his notebook. Whether or not you've been his unfortunate companion on the journey over, you're taking a bit of a look around yourself, or you're just trying to have a minute to yourself, the Doctor will speak up. It's not clear if he's talking to you or not though. He seems pretty engrossed in his sketch. ]

Do you suppose this might be one of their gods? Or just some hero?

[ And finally before they depart, he might stumble upon you trying to hoist one of the containers on your own. Whether or not they have stolen goods wouldn't even cross his mind; he seems bright-eyed and bushy tailed for the first time in weeks and seems in a decent enough mood too. If you need a hand, he might be so inclined to lend one. ]
