I have a question based on the poll. There's a question for participating in the challenge, but a separate question for participating in a challenge with another chosen. Since those are two separate questions, does that mean there are some challenges that happen without other chosen?
And along the same vein, if we only plot out, say, three winning challenges with other players, does that mean it's impossible to win? Or is there some wiggle room for handwaving?
he didn't sign up for this, but the design feels purposefully made to fuck you over. the stairs are a killer, but manjiro faces them, one step out of the other, like he hardly inhabits the body that ascends... one step-- two step-- so long, ground. not a part of him wishes to be here, he didn't-- want to see anyone, but this place loves to be contrary to his damn wishes.
he's both extremely anxious, and unfeeling at the same time. if this is where he has to be, then let's go.
(a physical challenge of endurance. mikey is tiny, and he has always adored being so. the way he looks has always brought an extra layer of satisfaction, it's easy to dismiss him as a fighter, a gang leader, or the legendary 'invincible mikey' when he's smaller than his entire gang. this is not exactly a fight, it's a test of care, attention, mobility and flexibility. the room is dark, aside from the dim light that glows from the lines that span through the entire room, all different angles, distances - it's almost like a freaking laser room trap scene from a spy movie.
challenge is easy enough. 3 strikes, whoever makes it further wins.)
(manjiro isn't even aware of what is wrong with him, but he knows just enough. this insatiable impulse to destroy whatever is in sight, stronger than himself, one that he tried to contain the most he could before he decided to not look back - to stop being so damn selfish and leave.
on the walls, several screens play events that have happened both in aldrip and tokyo, clear, large, surrounding sound, so each punch, rupture, breaking, tearing, is so audible that it hunts the ears even after it's done.
the day he nearly killed kazutora. he had planned for this, wanted this for so goddamn long, he would have-- the sounds of mikey's firsts against facial bones echo, and yet, all mikey does is watch.
the island, not too long after he arrived in aldrip. the mere thought of having lost takemichi driving him to almost go down with the island itself. it's his memory, almost as if it were from right behind his eyes, blurry, dark, and all he really saw was the creatures he was ripping apart with bare hands.
the bodies that have been floating on the deck up till now.
the scenes abruptly end, and the challenge is posed:
(it's a memory, this one. a hospital, and there's a woman who looks strikingly like mikey laying on the bed, the smell of chemicals assaulting one's nose. on the walls, pictures of a man whose face is a blank, alongside her, and the smile on her face is nearly palpable.
she's not going to address manjiro, though. she isn't really seeing him - but instead, her hand reaches for the challenger. will you hear what she has to say?
the challenge is hidden behind her, away from her eyes, and it says VULNERABILITY IS WEAKNESS. STRENGTH MEANS REAL LOVE. it's a debate - both manjiro and his mom on the affirmative, you, poor person, must discuss the fact this makes absolutely no sense. whoever makes the most compelling argument wins.)
[Yellow eyes, the outline of bodies on the floor. Yu freezes up at the sight of the screens, for a moment, expecting those two things and finding neither. It's just as well; the glasses from the TV world have been broken for as long as he's been here. He leaves them on a table at home, a place of reverence, a lingering memory. They haven't been useful for ages. But he only has a second to feel relieved about it before he finally lays eyes on the challenger.
Of course. Of course.
His mind goes numb, though the shock of seeing him only reveals itself in a slight slump of his shoulders, a soft exhale. He puts a hand in his pocket.]
"The voice of reason," huh.
[His eyes fix on Mikey. He has a feeling he knows what it means...but he's equally certain the other boy won't listen anyway.]
[ OOC: Would prefer to have a brief discussion about the trials before we begin (feel free to reach out to me here, on Plurk, or via the game discord!), happy to put up starters! Listing ideas here for the remaining open prompts, also down for other ideas:
Wands:Will and Creativity - GAY CHICKEN. This is too funny NOT to do. Jim will win this, so if you want a pansexual twink to rattle your character’s cage, please head my way 🤣 18+ only please! The tower won’t let you in the room otherwise~
Swords:Reason, Logic, Wisdom, & Intellect - A game of chess (he would likely win), some kind of science puzzle, open to ideas! For a darker twist: Russian Roulette. Jim won’t shoot an innocent person, so depending on the win condition he’s 50/50 on losing this one.
Cups:Emotions - This is the hardest challenge for Jim; my prevailing idea for this is to share something with the other person that you've never said aloud, or survive each other’s nightmare. He will have failed this challenge once already and is looking for a win on his second attempt. ]
Third door’s the charm, and Jim’s tablet blinks to life as he trudges up the staircase to reach the next door (why are there so many stairs? Jeez, he knows he’s been pretty sedentary lately with Spock’s Dark Web project, but it’s like Aldrip is making sure he catches back up with a vengeance). The tablet highlights the room he’s about the enter yellow - the goblet icon, his wand and sword icons already glowing green. While there were instructions for the tower as a whole and specific instructions for each challenge, Jim’s still unclear as to what each of the icons means. It feels like it’s relevant to the gimmick of the whole thing, somehow - maybe themed specifically? - but he hasn’t seen enough of the tower to figure out what’s what.
Still, Jim’s on guard for whatever will be thrown at him next, so he enters the room with no small amount of trepidation. There’s no world-shifting with this one - just two pads already in the center of the room, something akin to yoga mats, maybe, and a couple of fuzzy pillows. Jim takes a few cautious steps forward, his door swinging shut behind him. As he walks up to the setup, the candle in the middle lights itself with a soft fwish, bathing the area in a calming golden flicker.
Jim takes a seat to wait for his challenge companion, hoping the candle doesn’t make him sneeze - but it seems allergen-free, at least, which is nice. What the hell could this be about?
His answer comes a moment later, presumably as his partner arrives at the door opposite him, his tablet pinging with new instructions: Share a secret you’ve never said out loud.
“Fuck,” Jim mutters, as the door on the other side of the room swings open.
[Tonight's guest! He's the reluctant scion of the Vongola family, it's Tsunayoshi Sawada!
Having woken up in a strange tower and climbed an impossibly long staircase, the last thing Tsuna expects when he opens the door is to stumble out onto a stage to the sounds of an enthusiastic announcer. But here he is, centre stage and everything. And more than a little bit confused.
Though the confusion turns to dread as he starts to look around, and behind him on the stage is a large board. It is a large, elaborate scoreboard displaying various rankings from various people. Tsuna knows this board. It is the Vongola family scoreboard, used during traditional parties.
And something he's never won.]
And now, Tsunayoshi will be displaying his talent! Can he hope to score the most points?
[The thing is, he didn't prepare anything. So instead there's just a spotlight, and a very frozen Tsuna.]
Hie?
[B - The only way to Learn is by Playing (Swords)]
[Tsuna is back in the studio once again, looking harangued and exhausted, but this time, he is behind a podium. There's a red scoreboard with 20 points displayed and off to the side, a shadowy figure, who seems to be the host. Depending on how the shadows flicker, they either seem to be a very young child or an intimidating man.]
Reborn says, jump on one leg while humming the national anthem!
[Tsuna looks like he's been at this for a while. And he looks very exhausted.]
[C - The Only way to Win is by Learning (Coins)]
[Tsuna is backstage for this particular challenge, though the studio still remains. There is a white box with a red button hanging up on the wall several feet above Tsuna. He has a box of tennis balls in front of him and is trying to toss the balls to hit the button.
He doesn't seem to be having much success, the balls falling short of their mark and bouncing wildly off the walls. Perhaps at your head.
Meanwhile, Tsuna seems to be muttering.]
I don't even remember what the question was...
[D - The Only Way to Begin is by Beginning (Cups)]
[This particular game seems a bit different from the others. Or at least, that seems to be the case for Tsuna. He's introduced, and then questions start being asked, seemingly about a specific event from Tsuna's past, and the game studio starts to shift into a memory.
He's behind the school, frantically snuffing out lit sticks of dynamite while a terrified boy with silver hair watches in amazement.
He's on top of a roof as lightning crackles around them, watching a terrifying battle in which a young boy faces off against a man in a dark coat.
He's lying in a coffin, staring up at the sky, wondering how he got here.
He's laughing with a boy his age with red hair and a downcast look.
At some point during the memory, Tsuna seems to come back to himself, as if suddenly aware that he's lived this memory already. And starts looking for a way out. And then things repeat.]
[E - Everybody Do the Wenis (Wildcard)]
[The Wenis is a dance. Everybody is a genius. Who knows it in advance.
Got another Game Changer? Want a different challenge entirely? Let me know for plotting at urbaninja. All challenges based off of the show Game Changer on the Dropout Network.]
[as Yosuke enters the room, he has to dodge one of those tennis balls that'd bounced straight towards his head. he yelps, stepping out of the way... and huffing. as is his Thing.]
Hey, watch it!! You almost took me out with one of those things!!!
Swords:Wisdom and intellect — Avalon walks into darkness, the room seeming to stretch out in all directions. The only light comes from how their body, and yours, seem to glow. As a shadowy figure materializes across from them, the challenge appears in the air above its head: Understand why you failed.
Wands:Will, creativity, and values — The room has yet to materialize completely, as if waiting for another person. For now, Avalon is standing in a formless void that feels distinctly different from the realm they call home. Their bracelet is gone.
Cups:Emotion, love, and spirituality — When you walk into the room, Avalon is already there. Your emotions seem to float away, disconnecting from you, like a barrier has formed between you and what you felt before you entered. Avalon feels the shift in the atmosphere, the new emotions adding to the emptiness that had reflected their own.
Wildcard: ((OOC: I can’t think of anything for a Coins challenge. Feel free to drag them into one, or a different challenge that your character encounters!))
( i. cups — challenge: confront the past )cw: child abuse, sibling murder, death
[ it is a vision.
the images flicker on the wall. dim and yellow, as if aged thousands of years. and they have. even dragon memories do not last forever. over time, memories are grains of sand slipping through your fingers. but some images are persistent. nel and rafal, huddled together as sombron stalks the halls to drag one of his children to his neverending war. rafal going to sleep with a white knuckled grip around a knife in case a brother or sister decide to get rid themselves of the "failure". sombron, their father, tossing away a sibling out the window. failure. defect. failure. defect. those words are repeated over and over. the jeers of his siblings, the cold touch of his father.
rafal merely watches this, his fingers tight around his axe. he manages a sharp laugh, bitter and cruel. ]
Is this a joke? You think you can sway sympathy to my side with this display?
[ his eyes flash. ]
Do you think this will make me weak?
[ he'll never be weak again. never. ]
( ii. swords — challenge: pierce the illusion )here you'll see the other as a person you regret hurting. will you be able to break the illusion?
[ stepping into the next room, all rafal sees is mist. he frowns as he cautiously steps forward. ]
Is someone there?
[ he can hear footsteps. and he sees . . . mauvier? no, that can't be right. mauvier is dead. mauvier is back in elyos. if mauvier had arrived, he would have received rafal. his grip on his axe slackens, despite himself as rafal comes closer. ]
Speak.
[ the illusion will do everything in its power to make it seem like mauvier. and the person who is in the room will see their greatest regret speaking back. ]
( iii. coins — challenge: pass the chasm )
[ rafal gives the large ravine a distasteful look. there is a very easy solution to this, but he finds it rather distasteful. pride and his oath war with him as he grimaces to whoever is with him. ]
I have a way across. I can fly.
[ he says this with great reluctance. ]
However, I am a dragon. I cannot simply . . . allow any person to . . . ride me. Are you worthy?
[ he'll probably still help but he'll be fussed about it. ]
( iv. wildcard )
[ got a different prompt you’d like to do? ping me on timmtams / pm this journal ]
[ Claude came to this tower not by choice, not through any desire to be here, but because he like so many others were downright forced into it. He steps carefully from room to room, wary of what new horror may be awaiting them. He's been here long enough to anticipate some sort of new physical or psychological torture by now, though he privately hopes it's the former; he can deal with getting a little roughed up in a way he doesn't care to deal for being put through the emotional wringer for no good reason.
What he isn't anticipating is stepping into somebody else's psychological torment. He averts his eyes at first, eyes adjusting from the dim lighting of the previous room to the brightness of these visions, but curiosity gets the better of him: he looks. It's a grim sight that befalls him, torturous in its cruelty. If he were able to confront such a thing, he would be forced to recognize it as something that he too had grown up with - punishment disguised as something meant to bring strength, siblings pitted against one another, the deaths of royal children treated as cheap commodities, the furious emphasis on strength - but his mind won't let him stray down that path.
Instead he watches in silent, horrified sympathy. He knows that next time he lays his head down and closes his eyes, it's the sight of a child being hurled unceremoniously through a window that will dance behind his eyelids. For once in his life, there's very little he can think of to say.
Finally: ] They want you to suffer for suffering's sake. [ It's the only conclusion he's come to after all of these months here. Normally he pries unapologetically. This, though? This feels wrong. ] Sorry. I didn't know what I was walking into.
[ Whether you've won a bout, lost, or tied with your opponent, you finally find yourself on the Floor Between. There are some wooden tables with simple snacks arranged on them, each with a set of comfy chairs. It's here where Minato's decided to remain, hovering near a wooden cabinet brimming with gauze, bandages, bottles of iodine and bactine. One of the drawers even has a couple of camp beds, available for whoever needs to lie down. He's methodically checking each shelf, surveying the available supplies before wandering off to drag a box of cold compresses out of the corner.
He keeps glancing over his shoulder, as though he's expecting someone to join him. He doesn't let that slow him down though as he continues to sort through the rest floor's medical supplies.
Only when Ethlyn enters the room does he stop his work, offering her a wave. She looks a bit frazzled, as though she's still coming down from the adrenaline rush of her most recent challenge, but makes her way over to Minato. There, they continue taking an inventory of the available supplies and arranging them on a nearby table. Just another day for the Willow Clinic's staff, it seems. ]
[ ooc; This is a shared top-level between Ethlyn (baldrshand) and Minato! Per mod reply, Chosen might find themselves with minor cuts, scrapes, or a bruise here and there. Comment below with your character stopping by, and either Ethlyn or Minato will patch you up, hand you a bottle of water or gatorcaiman-ade, and offer to chat a bit.
Feel free to specify whether you are tagging out for Ethlyn or Minato. Otherwise, you can FAFO and let either myself or Bryo surprise you! ]
Hit me with both (at the same time or different threads it's all good)
How very generous of this place, providing healing supplies between bouts.
[The tone is rather sarcastic. Nanjo isn't exactly happy to be here, despite the fact he's more than curious to see where this all leads. By the time both of them are here, Kei clearly needs some rest, even if he doesn't look all that damage from whatever the tower has thrown at him before (♫ THE MENTAL DAMAGE CAN'T BE HEEEEAAALED ♫)]
Or perhaps I am mistaken...was I interrupting a task you've been both given?
[After all, there's only two people here. Logically, at least so far, the tasks seem to be for two people only. Maybe it's a request to set up medical supplies the fastest.]
(( OOC: If you want to vs Sandry please contact me @ plurk or discord as biowafers, or PM this journal! Very open to funny challenges and happy to have her tie or lose! ))
Sandry has been taking it easy climbing up the stairs. They do seem to go on but there also doesn't seem to be any pressure to rush through them, so when she reaches a landing she's in quite good shape! Opening the door leads her into a simple room with two tables facing each other, two chairs, two skeins of yarn, and two crochet hooks. Is this a challenge, then? Something to do with crochet?
Sandry sinks into the far chair, finding it more comfortable than it might look. It's actually quite nice. The room is neither too hot nor too cold and the table is a perfect height for her. All that's left is to wait for a competitor... right?
[Yu wakes gasping, his throat sore and raspy, pulse racing as he jerks back to life with a start. The tower, still, even after...
Hands around his throat. Vacant eyes locked on his as his lungs burn, as his vision goes dark—
But in spite of it, he's here, and he feels...alright. Physically normal. As normal as he can, he figures, considering. He takes stock of himself; his throat hurts, but he still seems able to talk. He can't see the bruises on his neck, but he imagines they must be there; he tugs his collar up to mask them as much as possible, but he won't be able to hide them completely.
He's barely even started and he's already exhausted. But determination to get to the top surpasses everything else, and so, onward and upward he goes.]
Something in his heart aches at the sight of it, some mix of homesickness and longing, but he quickly pulls himself together as he sees the pair of fishing poles set up near the river. At the sound of footsteps, he turns for a second to greet his would-be challenger.]
I haven't done this in a while, [said with some fondness in his tone.] Looks like the challenge is "catch the biggest fish before sunset."
[With the sun sinking slowly on the horizon, that's maybe an hour for the challenge, if that.]
swords—weapons at the ready [duel]
[The setup of the room is fairly simple: an arena with black walls, black floors; and aside from a few minor details, it's mostly empty. Most prominent is this: Yu, standing on the other side from where you are, with a golden flag behind him. As for you, there seems to be a gray flag behind you.
You seem to be equipped with a weapon that feels familiar to you.
His tablet buzzes, and he looks at the message for a moment before replacing it in his pocket.]
"Capture the flag by any means necessary," is what it says. [A small smile, though it doesn't quite reach his eyes. In fact, he sounds a bit detached, a bit distant, like he's trying to keep this all business.] As a personal request, I'd suggest we not make it a fight to the death.
cups—i am a shadow, the true self [confessions]
[The room is empty but for a wall of TVs, stacked to the ceiling and sprawling onward as far as the eye can see without end. They all have only one switch: on/off, and currently, they are all set to "off." Yu examines the wall thoughtfully, then checks the challenge brief on his tablet.]
"Turn them on, one at a time. First to surrender loses." There has to be more to it than that...right?
[There is. Each TV turned on will reveal a deep confession from the hand who pushed the switch, revealing dark secrets, shameful memories, uncomfortable confessions, and other things that either party may wish to keep hidden. This is why only one can be turned on at a time: because both viewers must absorb the entire secret before moving onto the next.
Each TV turned on will make the air feel more and more oppressive...though it's hard to say whether that's a real effect of the room, or just psychological.]
interval—the floor between [break time]
[Yu can be found on this in-between floor every so often, taking a break or just hanging out. In spite of his mood, or maybe because of it, he doesn't keep to himself, instead offering a soft "hello" to those within a polite distance as he takes a chair near them.]
wildcards etc [I'll be putting some custom starters in the comments—if you'd like one, pm me or send me a message on plurk at posolutely! also open to wildcards if you want to throw a surprise at me. let's go!]
coins—portal to the meat dimension [closed to luffy]
Outside the diner, the sound of rain is constant, coming down in fat, heavy drops. Inside…it's warm, quiet, and smells overwhelmingly of delicious food. Yu is overcome by a wave of nostalgia, a welcome and maybe needed reminder of home in a vulnerable moment. He takes a seat at the bar, and an almost unreasonably large bowl is placed in front of him.
Ah. Of course. The rainy day beef bowl challenge.
It's in this moment that he spots Luffy, and waves him down.]
Hey. Care to join me?
[He has to wonder if this challenge is really all that meets the eye…otherwise he's probably going to lose outright in a record-breaking short amount of time.]
[The room feels dark and dismal, old grim staining the walls with industrial pipes and what looks like computer consoles bolted to the walls. Nonfunctional, simply an echo of a memory, utterly useless.
The moment Vincent has entered, he feels that familiar sensation boiling under his skin. He's gritting his teeth, gripping his head with both hands as he stumbles. Lights flicker, and what appears to be rest mist is swirling around Vincent. His eyes flit toward you, and he grits out:]
Run. Now!
[There's something wrong inside of him; he can't stop this, and the rage he keeps pressed down rises and rises until it's too late. Letting out a howl of pain, Vincent abruptly transforms into a giant hulking beast.
The Galian Beast does not discriminate. It will come for you. Or can you find a way to bring this monster to peace?]
⚰️ii. wands | queen's blood
[The room is more quaint. Still old looking, dusty, but more like the composition of an abandoned library in need of a good cleaning. In the middle of it is a table, and Vincent waiting with his arms folded along with an expression of contemplation. On the table is what appears to be a game and a deck of cards set aside for you. A paper covering the rules and basics of how to play Queen's Blood is available to be reviewed.
Vincent gives you a nod.]
Let yourself be prepared. Know your cards. When you are ready, let me know.
⚰️iii. cups | sin
[The room prepared is lined with bricks, as if set years and years ago. In the middle is a coffin, its lid covered with a grim design open just slightly.
Like an old recording, a static filled noise grinds out the sound of a gunshot, followed by the muffled sound of an infant crying out, as if just born. Idly, Vincent traces his fingertips over the ridge of coffin, exhaustion in his eyes.
A woman's distant laugh, then her pained sobbing. A man's cackle, the distinct sound of a blade slicing through meat.]
...Perhaps waking was a fool's choice.
⚰️iv. in between
[Though the arrangement is calm enough, Vincent opts to not utilize any furniture. Instead, he's in the darkest corner furthest from everything else, his arms crossed and his eyes closed.
Of course, if you approach, his red eyes open, observing you with mild interest.]
Yes?
⚰️v. wildcard & notes
[please feel free to make your own prompt or request a specific one! for the wands/queen's blood prompt, i'm not going to get into explicit detail on the card game itself and i'll just roll a die or flip a coin per round to see who wins if i feel it's evenly matched; vincent is a high level player, so that is something to bear in mind.]
Vincent doesn't need to tell him twice, but as Minato turns tail to flee, it's quickly evident that it won't be long before the transformed man catches up to him. After all, this is but a room, and the entrance to the floor vanished as soon as he stepped through the door.
It's a good thing that he's used to climbing suspicious towers and stumbling across monsters of all kinds. As he runs, he retrieves his Evoker from its holster and summons forth Yamata-no-Orochi. The giant, multi-headed snake materializes in the Galian Beast's path, breathing an icy wind at it to slow him down. ]
When others are asked what drives Spock to participate in any number of scenarios, they often say one of two things: 1. curiosity, 2. James Tiberius Kirk. If particularly uncharitable or particularly brave (i.e., they do not care whether or not said Vulcan is within earshot), they would claim both in equal measure. To Spock's great fortune, no such individuals are about today to confirm or deny his reasons for being here. But, if further information was likely to be available, wouldn't most who cared about their predicament position themselves to obtain it? It was only logical.
Which is all to say: Spock winds up on another floor. He's gone through his fair share of previous challenges. Some were more agreeable than others. Some were a source of shame. At least his hair is mostly dry by the time he arrives here. It isn't as immaculate as he'd prefer and gives hint to the fact that it isn't nearly as pin straight as his usual styling would suggest, but so it goes. He's just glad to have clothes that cover the whole of him.
It doesn't stop his skin from buzzing unpleasantly, nor does it curtail the beginnings of a headache, but if that's the worst of it? Fine.
He tabs into the room before him, secretly relieved to see no ominous baskets nearest the threshold, and is greeted by... A table that resembles those tucked in the alcoves of the local library. There are two, plush chairs that sit at opposite ends. There is nothing else, save a single speaker in the middle.
Just as Spock takes a step in, it crackles to life. The audio fidelity is poor, but it is understandable nonetheless: Welcome. Please take a seat.
Spock, having already survived almost drowning (among other things), positively does not do as suggested. At least, not immediately. Because of his (understandable) suspicions, whoever joins him is likely to see or sense that he's moving about the environment. He's already turned over the chairs and reset them by the time they come in, but now he's got the speaker in his hand and is looking for a seam to indicate how to open it without breaking it.
[Stepping into the new room, Scott's honestly not quite sure what to expect. Some crazy ass monster leaping out to attack him? Dealing with emotions or some shit? Those sort of things kind of happen a lot in this place and... he's ready. He has to be. Because he's been here for over a year, he's like a veteran or whatever. Still, seeing two puzzle boxes sitting atop separated tables, with a chair tucked in each is sort of a weird sight. So, that's the challenge??
Scott looks down when his tablet flashes a message and open the box. Well, okay. One of those logic puzzles, he gets it. He doesn't have much experience with this kind of thing, but he should be fine, right? ...Right.
He frowns, before finally noticing that there's someone else here with him.]
[ah yes. Yosuke's already been standing in a customer service outfit from home, his arms crossed as he watches an elderly lady yelling at him. it's kind of obvious he's tuned out...]
Yeah. Uh huh.
[he never really expected that he'd have to bear listening to customer service complaints as part of the challenges, but here he is. and at least he's already used to that sort of thing, between home and Aldrip. with the update, some of the NPCs had become more Karen-like...
the older lady finally finishes... and it moves on to the next customer who airs their complaints.]
b. coins
[he's not going to complain. these are challenges he thinks he might actually be able to win, for once. maybe he'll even make it to the top.
he blinks at the varying heights of diving boards, grinning. an announcer voice speaks up loudly:]
WHOOOO CAN DO THE BEST DIVE??? LET'S FIND OUT!
[Yosuke grins at anyone who's in the room with him.]
Hell yeah, let's do this!!
c-1. the roof
[there's a lot of childlike triumph when he reaches the roof. that for once, his luck isn't complete shit, and he finally won something.
he may even be dancing. sorry he's so dumb.]
c-2. the roof
[but when everything starts going sideways, yosuke can't help but yelp. the eye is--]
W-What the hell?? That's so freaky!!
[but then he hears everything. comprehends it. sees the fairy start to reach out--]
Hey, I got you!! Hold on!!
[and he'll be running towards him to try to grip him--]
c-3. aftermath
[some wake in their beds again. some wake in other places. if you wake up with Yosuke in Aldrip, you're plopped into a fountain with him. because I can
so much for luck-
he yelps, splashing a bit as he flails to get out... and then he rolls over, over the lip of the fountain and then on his back.]
What the hell was all that??
[he probably hasn't noticed he's reappeared with someone... or maybe you're just passing by after he materialized into a fountain. or just come across him while he's dripping wet and in his pajamas.
it's up to you.]
d. network
[well after he's cleaned himself up...]
hey any1 else make it 2 the top of that batshit tower??? wtf was that
[OOC: okay! so since Yosuke is making it to the top, I don't want to do too many losing threads. if you want, you can flip a coin before you tag me and tell me what you got, or if you have a preference, or if you want me to flip the coin, that's fine too. but the first two people only who want to have losing threads with Yosuke will have them!!
also, prompt c-2 will end up with them being ejected from the tower, and where they end up is up to you in that case! if you want to plot any other trials or anything, just hmu @ angelonia on plurk or in the game discord!!]
Edited (I added one more prompt lmfao) 2024-05-17 16:10 (UTC)
Cause this was mortifying. Just waking up in a bathing suit. She knew with absolute certainty that she'd not gone to sleep sitting on a bench by a pool.
She flinched at the buzzer. Slowly turning to see who else was there now she'd been jolted back to reality. Looking at the other person. Then-
(cw: the swords challenge can involve injury and violence, the wands challenge can end in (temporary) death or suicide.)
[Contests are not supposed to be cruel games that whisk you out of your bed into the middle of nowhere — even Ryoji knows about that!
It doesn’t take long until he tries one of the challenges. In the end, he did sign up for this, right? And maybe there’s a nice prize waiting for him at the end of it all. For some reason, he doesn’t feel panicked by his circumstance, and he wonders where this inexplicable sense of calm is coming from. By the time he opens one of the doors, he feels like he’s just opening one of the rooms in, and that is where he realizes it:
Home. For some reason, this tower feels like home.]
scavenger hunt! (coins)
The place looks like a child’s playroom at first: brightly colored walls and cushioned floors, with an assortment of objects collected up in different piles! The challenge is clear from the get go: both contestants might find an object that relates to the theme, and the first person who gets it wins! How would they know if you found the correct object? Only the tower knows!
Despite the childlike look of the place, toys and trinkets aren’t the only things you can find in there. You can find more sinister items in your search: this game is supposed to be intentionally traumatic for everyone!
There are three rounds to this game. Best out of three wins!
round 1: something that reminds you of school round 2: something that reminds you of the city round 3: something that reminds you of what you have lost.
memory game! (cups)
This room isn’t much of a room — just a dark and empty space save for the table in the middle, two chairs facing each other, and a spread of blue cards. The instructions begin to play once both of them take their seats.
It’s a matchmaking memory card game!!! Whatever that’s supposed to be. Ryoji and the challenger must take turns in guessing something about the other — whether it’s about a memory they might have, or their innermost thoughts. answering correctly gives you a chance to open two cards, and the ones with the most matching pairs win!
There isn’t much else to it, except for the theming: all of the cards are of the first thirteen pieces of the major arcana, and every time a pair is formed their surroundings seem to change. The Magician arcana would turn the place into the rooftop of a dorm, the Priestess arcana would transport them inside a train, and so on.
obstacle course! (swords)
You will find yourself in what feels like the middle of a horror set. The night is dead silent, tinted with green. no other signs of life could be found. Coffins standing outright litter the streets, an unknown dark ichor leaking at the ground.
After introductions are made, the goal of the challenge makes itself clear: reach the goal. But of course, an obstacle course would have obstacles on the way! And these obstacles may be one of the following:
swords — It is exactly what it says on the tin. Blades might come plunging in or cleaving at you from an unknown attackers, so make sure to dodge them whenever they appear!
dark feathers — At first nothing seems to change save for the feathers floating down around you, until you are suddenly stricken by a sudden surge of fear. It’s a terrible, paralyzing feeling that increases your urge to stay still or to run away. You need to push through that fear or find a way to cure yourself of it.
the reaper — If you start hearing chains in the distance: run. Run far far away. A giant spectral figure is out to get you. He has guns, he has dark attacks, he has a potato sack over his head! You can try defeating it, and while possible it will waste your time: this is a race, not a duel!
for some reason, ryoji does not experience any of these obstacles, and he basically just has to take a casual stroll across the street. he’s not in any rush though — you can win if you book it!
december 31st. (wands)
It’s a single bedroom with windows at the side, bathing the room in moonlight. Ryoji has never been in this dorm room before, yet for some reason, it feels very familiar to him. There’s nothing for him to do at first: the laptop and television doesn't turn on, The fridge doesn’t work, and there’s nothing out of place in the closet.
The door creaks loudly when someone enters. “Oh, hello there!” He’s cheerful in his greeting — he has been waiting for a while, after all. But once the challenger enters, the door locks them both. There is no visible way out of the room. And just when both of you are wondering what the challenge may be, your companion will soon feel something heavy and cold in their hands.
It’s a gun.
A voice booms loudly with a single instruction and nothing more:
KILL HIM.
wildcard
I am open to all sorts of fun and plots! You can contact me on DMs or on soukokus if you wanna discuss things out.
[ Minato's blood runs icy, color draining from his face as he stares down at the gun in his hands. His throat is dry as he finally lifts his head to meet Ryoji's gaze.
Back then, the thought of killing Ryoji that fateful eve never even crossed Minato's mind. But it's different now. As far as he can tell, Kotone hadn't decided to kill Ryoji that night either. If that's the case, would triggering those familiar memories unintentionally awaken Ryoji to his true identity?
His fingers curl around the gun, but his hands won't stop trembling. ]
[at least she's gotten somewhere in this tower. the challenges are weird and annoying, but she's getting there. that's all that matters to her. she's competitive by nature, and wants to get to the top. just to prove to herself that she can do it.
the challenge for this room is something simple, at least: it's just a game of playing darts. she could probably do that.
but now she's waiting for her opponent... obviously she won't really get anywhere by herself.]
[Silco knew this was a bad idea, but he wasn't about to let an opportunity to see what sort of challenges their keepers would set them against either. He reasoned that he was proficient with many skills outside of direct combat, which should suit him well if he chose rooms carefully. The first two were as expected and he had managed to find a partner that wasn't useless, and they had completed the task with effort.
When he entered the third room in his ascent, he stopped dead and stared. It was reasonable she would be here, but the likelihood of them competing successfully were slim. She had some of Vander's skill with her fists, lacking some of her adoptive father's impressive strength that there was nothing she could do anything about. She was still dangerous; he'd seen the bar after all.
He straightened his shoulders and walked over to view the game. Darts. Something he was intimately proficient at, thank Janna.]
[close prompts below! i'm always up for new ideas and fun things, so if you want to do something with gwen, hit me up at crystallium or @ crystallium on discord!!]
[The door Gwen entered had the "cups" symbol on the outside. She blinked as the room transformed into-- her school gym? Déjà vu struck her as she stepped inside. It was mostly empty, just some simple gym equipment. Free weights, ropes, and those horrible red dodgeball balls. She didn't see another person yet, either.
But then her tablet buzzed with the challenges perimeters, and she frowned at the message that crossed her screen.
Defeat the monster.]
What-- ? [She isn't even able to finish her sentence when she realizes there is someone else in the room, someone she knows and recognizes immediately, flooding her with relief.]
Peter! Thank god, this will be so much easier with--- [it's as she starts walking towards him that her spidey-senses goes off, and she realizes something is wrong. It's Peter, the Peter she knows here, but as he turns to face her, he starts to change, starts to turn green.]
No, no, no! Peter, no! [She starts to rush towards him, but she's thrown back as Peter fully transforms into the Lizard.]
[ Argenti has this penchant for ending up in desolate places for people facing ill-fates just in time to lend assistance. Perhaps he finds one of these poor souls taking a rest on that winding set of stairs between trials.
It must be something about the air hanging off their shoulders that makes Argenti take a few extra stairs at a time to catch up to them. He'll even take a knee upon one of the steps should they be sitting down at the time. ]
Please wait! Pardon my intrusion, but in such turbulent times I find that I must ask you — are you alright?
Challenges
🌹 i. Cups [ Looks to be that his cup trial is quite literal. The premise appears to be that participants must give their rival compliments, and once they have done so they can deposit a little bit of the wine held in their own cup into their opponents. The losing condition is to have your own cup overflow. The hard rule is that the praise must be genuine and true — until real compliment is offered after the liquid within their cups will turn black if it is not. ]
I am a gentleman. I will allow you to go first, if you would like to go.
🌹 ii. Coins [ The red head stands perfectly framed upon the stage — or perhaps it's an arena? With his spear held one-handed and at the ready it appears anyone who might come across this set up will either have to fight or persuade Argenti to make their way through. Shall you choose brains or brawn? Hesitate for too long to either leave or engage and he'll call out and gesture with his ironclad hand for his opponent to approach. ]
Will you be my opponent?
[ ooc. Some closed starters to follow! If this open prompt doesn't suit your fancy and you'd like to plot out something with the local Knight of Beauty please DM this journal or hit up the plotting comment. re: combat — the guy has two to three boss health bars in his game of origin... kind of depending on the encounter. Although he's really fair about combat it would be fun if the combat option (should you decide to take that route) ended up being really long and arduous because of that. This is his Boss Music btw ]
[ If there's a will, there's a way. A little less well known expression is: if there's a painting easel set up there's also a knight standing right in front of it apparently. For a tower that's foisting dire situations upon them all the room this trial is in is quite nice. There's a good quality of lightening trickling in from the windows, at least.
With those glittering emerald eyes Argenti glances over the easel at his opponent with a very warm and friendly smile on his lips. ]
In your attempts to capture my essence you need not feel nervous. On that contrary, please, feel free to give it your all!
[After the Okcindr mess, Naoto had paid attention when this time when she'd gotten the strange alert. Some kind of game? Meh. But she'd check to be safe, it wasn't as if she cared about the device she'd been given here.
It was a bit unnerving to wake up fully dressed when she'd been in her PJs. But she'd rather fight in her normal clothes so...]
Stairs [Naoto had been thinking it for a while now, but she really didn't have much endurance. In the TV world, she wasn't the slowest, they'd all had to match pace. They'd also had items and spells to compensate.
Here? In this tower? The stairs felt endless. She'd been okay the first few floors, then she'd had to use the railing. But it never ended. Eventually, about what would have been the 20th floor, she had to take a break.
So here she was, sat on a random step. Naoto hated it. The stairwell was narrow, even though she wasn't large she was still taking up half the step. It felt like she'd get in the way. Not that she'd seen anyone. ]
Rest floor [Eventually, with or without running anyone else. She'd reach the break area, she was glad for the actual seating. Almost falling onto one. Normally there'd be a bit more grace but she couldn't feel her legs.
As for the refreshments.]
I wonder if they're safe...
[It didn't make sense for the food and drink to be poisoned. Why bring them to this place just to kill them. It wouldn't make sense. But still...
Her instincts said no to having random, unattended drinks. But thirsty after that trek.]
Wands [The tablets only displayed a single sentence. 'Get across first'.
Get across what? Well despite leaving a seemingly normal corridor, they were now on a suspended series of metal walkways. Looking through the gaps in the floor showed that they were above some ominously glowing, green liquid.
There was a door the other side of the room... Except the there was a good ten meter gap between the walkway the two contestants had been placed on and the small platform by the door.
Luckily(?), there was plenty of scrap metal and random objects scattered around.]
Cups ['Talk about your worst memory'
They were in a therapy room. Just two plush couches opposite each other. Naoto was currently sat on one with her arms crossed and scowling.
This was bullshit.]
Wildcard ((Anything else? You can tag in with a starter or message me to get one. I'm planning on Naoto being booted from the tower for losing.))
[Kotone, on the other hand, is living her best life. Sure, things weren't exactly good in Tartarus, but it's hard not to think about the good times she'd had with her friends in that stairmaster of a dungeon. There's an anticipation for what each floor might bring, a hope that maybe she'll run into one of her friends and be able to spend time with them or help them.
So, up the stairs she keeps going with her same seemingly-boundless energy as always, the kind that kept her team motivated for just one more floor in search of money, or treasure, or weird bits of Shadows that Theo wanted. They're just stairs! Rio would kick her butt if she gave up.]
Oh! [The cute detective from Yu's team! Kotone rests her weight against her naginata and gives the other girl (she knows now!) a bright smile, taking the opportunity to catch her breath. She's not winded, but it's nice to take a break, anyway!] Hey!
[ Matt hadn't read the ad at first. He is, rather unfortunately, blessed with the obligation of needing to touch most things in print in order to read them. The sound of the pop-up caught his attention just fine, but he couldn't exactly guess where the button was. He just wanted to shut it up. And he did.
So. Now he's here. In a stone room and a tower and oh great, does this mean he's been kidnapped? Do the people in charge here ever get tired of that? Apparently not. Getting his bearings, Matt pats himself down and realizes he's wearing familiar clothes -- not what he slept in, but his all-black ensemble from home, complete with the black bandana that covers the upper half of his face. ]
Great. Just great.
[ Yeah, he's got no interest in playing. But if getting "closer" to rehabilitation means he might get out of here, maybe it might be worth a shot. This can be a wildcard if you wanna find Matt in your challenge or w/e. ]
COINS: LOCKED TO MURDOCK
[ Of course Matt's challenge is a physical test. He climbs the stairs with ease, though he rests a hand along the wall out of habit, finding one familiar point in this strange place. Matt's tablet reads the challenge, and he has to roll his eyes because there's no way. There's no way he's doing this.
FIGHT TO THE DEATH, says the robotic voice of his tablet as the bell rings for them to start. Matt doesn't need to turn his head to know who's on the other side of this room. ]
You're not really going to play this game, are you?
FLOORS BETWEEN
[ Matt wakes with a jolt in one of the rooms, clutching his chest and breathing hard. He throws the mask off his face and breathes hard, eyes unfocused and dazed like he just woke up from a nightmare.
He's panting hard as he moves to stand, arms shaking in a mix of panic and frustration. ]
What the hell is this place?
WANDS: SPEECH & DEBATE
[ Now for something a little silly. This room has two benches on each side, with a faceless judge up high at the center -- and on each bench, there are stacks of books (in regular print and braille.) Matt may look pretty damn tired, but the make of this room is enough to make him smirk. It's a courtroom.
Is a tomato a vegetable? MAKE THE BEST ARGUMENT, you have 15 minutes to prepare a monotone voice echoes from his tablet. ]
This should be fun.
[ He makes his way to one of the benches, flipping open the book to the index and dragging a hand over the pages. He looks straight ahead as he does this, but he does quirk his head towards his challenger. ]
[ Matt doesn't wait for an answer, through. There's a click, and he's already drawn a sword from the inside of his cane, pocketing the other half for now.
Is he going to play?
Damn right he's going to play. He's going to play to win.
He takes a running leap at Matt, blade drawn. He's sure Matt will dodge, but it's about keeping him on his toes, you know? ]
[Once the ad had initially played on the phone, Kurt was quick to click it, wondering what he had to do to win a grand prize and what such a grand prize could be! But when it disappeared afterwards, he didn't think much of it... until today. Now he's stuck in this tower and regretting his choices. The image inducer is off, so he's blue and fuzzy now. Especially as he realizes he might need to go all-out for these challenges, and hiding things like his tail will just hold him back. Time to try his best...]
[A. Coin: Danger Room is My Middle Name]
[Welcome to the Danger Room. A giant room outfitted with various high-tech weapons and obstacles, from laser guns to shifting walls and winding walkways. All of those weapons and obstacles are constantly produced and targeted towards everyone in the room.
The objective: survive the Danger Room. The traps here will not kill, but they can knock out or otherwise incapacitate someone, which would disqualify the person. The last competitor standing will get to win this challenge. Nightcrawler's something of a pro at this, using his teleporting power to get around most of the traps and obstacles. Still, he'll try to help out even his fellow competitors and teleport to their aid!]
Watch out!
[B. Cups: Mystiques Were Made]
[You found yourself along a rocky shore lying at the bottom of a tall cliff. Atop the cliff, there's a small gazebo where several people are. Well, one of the people in question is currently made of stone. After a few moments, there's an outburst from one person in the gazebo, who pushes the petrified person right off the cliff. The stone woman falls all the way down to the rocks, breaking off into pieces, while Kurt screams. This is his memory, after all. After that happens, time skips back to the beginning, leading to the woman falling again.
Kurt's mission is simple: to save Mystique, that woman who was turned into stone. Other competitors may have one of two different objectives: one is to save Mystique before Kurt does. Or the other could be to stop Kurt from saving Mystique, either by getting him to give up or to incapacitate him in some way.
As for Kurt himself, he's very shaken at being back in this memory. He might need a moment before he's ready to get going with this.]
[C. Wands: Silence is a Virtue]
[This one isn't tied to Kurt's memory or any location he's familiar with. The setting and rules seem self-explanatory. It's a library, and you have to be silent. Making any noise above a whisper will be instant disqualification, and the last person standing will be the victor. Kurt's good at being quiet and is tip-toeing around the library, to scope out his competition and to find some way to quietly pass the time until he can win...]
[D. Wildcard]
[Feel free to run into Nightcrawler between floors, or hit me up for plotting!]
[Scott's not sure what's more disturbing, seeing a statue of a woman fall to the ground and crumble on impact, or the scream that Kurt makes when it happened. W-what's going on? The confusion only doubles when the remnants of the statue seemingly disappear from the ground, only to be restored at the top of the cliff and Scott finds himself witnessing the same thing again.
Well, except this time, he jumps into action. If he actually helps, guess they'll see.
Whoever this statue is she's clearly important to Kurt and that's the only reasoning he needs to try and save her-- it? Whatever. Questions later. He doesn't really have time to think and without a way to control his powers, he can't exactly shoot the statue itself, so he pulls off his glasses to shoot the side of the cliffside, hoping to break the foundation and either give a softer landing for the falling statue or lessen the actual height of the fall.]
Oh -- hey, Toph, you woke up here too? Looks like it's you and me for whatever stupid challenge they have waiting for us next.
[ When he wanders into the next challenge room, he's not unhappy to run into Toph, but he's not happy either, largely because he thinks it's absolute nonsense that they keep on being forced into situations like this one. But to his gratification, he sees no weapons here, no morbid dangers, no strange visions of past traumas. Instead, two stools and a chessboard sit humbly in the middle of the room.
He steps over to where a sealed letter awaits them and cuts it open. ]
For this task, we'll be testing your skills at multitasking, of nimbleness of wit and strength of intuit Huh, they really wanted the rhyme there. Anyway... You must face off against one another in a game of chess, but who wins or loses is immaterial. Instead, your focus must be split on devising the most creative, cutting, and ingenius insults towards each other while you play.
[ He frowns down at the chess board, skimming his fingertips against it and begrudgingly acknowledging that at least there are ridges where the squares have been raised so that Toph may at least feel her way around them. ]
Well, that seems unfair. Do you even know how to play chess?
[ Toph is, for her part, having a great time in the low-stakes challenges she's found herself in. She loves friendly competition and so far nothing has happened in the tower to dampen her spirits. She'd signed up more than willingly, and isn't disappointed with the diversion.
So she's perfectly cheery as she strides over to take her stool, not displeased to see Claude.
From the game board and positioning, Toph can tell this is something like pai sho, which is not really her thing. She's gearing herself up for a tough fight when Claude keeps reading, and when it's revealed the real contest is about insults, she bursts into loud, genuine laughter. ]
No clue, but that's not gonna keep me from absolutely destroying you, Handsome!
[ The nickname sounds like a compliment, but Toph absolutely means it as a mocking, friendly rib on how often he mentions how attractive he is to a blind girl. ]

Thanks!

Jim Kirk | SEMI-OPEN & CLOSED
Wands: Will and Creativity - GAY CHICKEN. This is too funny NOT to do. Jim will win this, so if you want a pansexual twink to rattle your character’s cage, please head my way 🤣 18+ only please! The tower won’t let you in the room otherwise~
Swords: Reason, Logic, Wisdom, & Intellect - A game of chess (he would likely win), some kind of science puzzle, open to ideas! For a darker twist: Russian Roulette. Jim won’t shoot an innocent person, so depending on the win condition he’s 50/50 on losing this one.
Cups: Emotions - This is the hardest challenge for Jim; my prevailing idea for this is to share something with the other person that you've never said aloud, or survive each other’s nightmare. He will have failed this challenge once already and is looking for a win on his second attempt. ]
for Sandry (threadmage)

Tsunayoshi Sawada | Katekyou Hitman Reborn
Let me know for plotting at

Avalon — OTA
Swords: Wisdom and intellect — Avalon walks into darkness, the room seeming to stretch out in all directions. The only light comes from how their body, and yours, seem to glow. As a shadowy figure materializes across from them, the challenge appears in the air above its head: Understand why you failed.
Wands: Will, creativity, and values — The room has yet to materialize completely, as if waiting for another person. For now, Avalon is standing in a formless void that feels distinctly different from the realm they call home. Their bracelet is gone.
Cups: Emotion, love, and spirituality — When you walk into the room, Avalon is already there.

] Sorry. I didn't know what I was walking into.

the floor between (ethlyn and minato arisato) | ota
He keeps glancing over his shoulder, as though he's expecting someone to join him. He doesn't let that slow him down though as he continues to sort through the rest floor's medical supplies.
Only when Ethlyn enters the room does he stop his work, offering her a wave. She looks a bit frazzled, as though she's still coming down from the adrenaline rush of her most recent challenge, but makes her way over to Minato. There, they continue taking an inventory of the available supplies and arranging them on a nearby table. Just another day for the Willow Clinic's staff, it seems. ]

Hit me with both (at the same time or different threads it's all good)
[The tone is rather sarcastic. Nanjo isn't exactly happy to be here, despite the fact he's more than curious to see where this all leads. By the time both of them are here, Kei clearly needs some rest, even if he doesn't look all that damage from whatever the tower has thrown at him before
(♫ THE MENTAL DAMAGE CAN'T BE HEEEEAAALED ♫)]Or perhaps I am mistaken...was I interrupting a task you've been both given?
[After all, there's only two people here. Logically, at least so far, the tasks seem to be for two people only. Maybe it's a request to set up medical supplies the fastest.]

yu narukami | persona 4
Hands around his throat. Vacant eyes locked on his as his lungs burn, as his vision goes dark—
But in spite of it, he's here, and he feels...alright. Physically normal. As normal as he can, he figures, considering. He takes stock of himself; his throat hurts, but he still seems able to talk. He can't see the bruises on his neck, but he imagines they must be there; he tugs his collar up to mask them as much as possible, but he won't be able to hide them completely.

Ah. Of course. The rainy day beef bowl challenge.
It's in this moment that he spots Luffy, and waves him down.]

vincent valentine | final fantasy vii
[please feel free to make your own prompt or request a specific one! for the wands/queen's blood prompt, i'm not going to get into explicit detail on the card game itself and i'll just roll a die or flip a coin per round to see who wins if i feel it's evenly matched; vincent is a high level player, so that is something to bear in mind.]
i. swords

Don't mind him.

It doesn’t take long until he tries one of the challenges. In the end, he did sign up for this, right? And maybe there’s a nice prize waiting for him at the end of it all. When he entered the third room in his ascent, he stopped dead and stared. It was reasonable she would be here, but the likelihood of them competing successfully were slim. Naoto Shirogane | Persona 4
It was a bit unnerving to wake up fully dressed when she'd been in her PJs. But she'd rather fight in her normal clothes so...]
Stairs
[Naoto had been thinking it for a while now, but she really didn't have much endurance.
Rest floor
[Eventually, with or without running anyone else.
Wands
[The tablets only displayed a single sentence.
Cups
['Talk about your worst memory'
They were in a therapy room. Just two plush couches opposite each other. Naoto was currently sat on one with her arms crossed and scowling.
This was bullshit.]

stairs!

[D. Wildcard]
[Feel free to run into Nightcrawler between floors, or hit me up for plotting!]
b;

Do you even know how to play chess?
no subject
