First Half - Ignorance Fairy Misfortune
Oh, motherfucker--!!
[He goes to grab for the fairy that's laughing and making off with his wallet, but his grip falls short when it flutters up a little higher. How he even got into this predicament is anyone's guess, but his eyes are narrowed and keeping track of it, lips pressed into a thin line. Not today, you stupid fucking fairy. After a moment, he's snapping his fingers at the closest person to him.]
Hey, help me out so we can corner that thing.
[How they plan on cornering a small, flying pixie-esque creature is anyone's guest, but he sure as hell plans on trying. Even if it takes them parkouring across Aldrip.]
The Casino
[The bright lights and game are something different from the typical quiet, idyllic paradise that is Aldrip-- so of course it's going to garner peoples interest and find all types hanging around. Whether it's playing games or just hanging outside and smoking, it sure is a happening place to be.
Good thing he got his wallet back from that fairy somehow. There's no fear of being unhoused or not eating in a town as perfect as Aldrip, where people will always help one another, even if it comes with a stern chastisement-- so why not blow your money away?]
You any good at the cards? [It's idle conversation in between games as he mills about the floor, seemingly unsure what to waste his time on next.]
Midway - Suspicions.
Memories.
[A small sash of read, and he's stopped in place, staring at the accessory for sale like he doesn't quite understand what he's looking at. Something--- he's never seen before, but feels intrinsic, feels correct? Idly, a hand goes to his waist, and finds nothing. Looking back up, and there was nothing that was ever there to begin with.
Strange.
And the trend continues- Once or twice he reaches for the object leading to the disassociating sensation, and he can't tell if that's worse. The way his head aches and splits, the intrusion of thoughts and familiar scenes and emotions that disappear just as quickly, tethered to nothing. But they all have something in common:
They're from a life outside of here.
By midday, he's keyed up, eyes darting as though in search of anything else that would trigger that alien, disturbing, addictive sensation of momentarily knowing something that wants to flicker and fade as soon as the object is gone. But he'll at least ask the person with him-- maybe they're having lunch together, or skipping out on work, or just been having a conversation at a cafe.]
You been... seeing things that go missing lately? Like they're there, but once you look away or grab them-- not anymore?
Doubt.
[Birds don't exist anymore. Which is very weird because he is at the farm to fit a chocobo for a bridle and trim its talons, but instead Chocobos just don't exist.]
--What the fuck? Where the hell did the asshole birds go?
[Hello???? The stalls are empty? There aren't even feathers on the ground. Is he going to get paid for this??]
The end - Everything feels Wrong Countdown
[It's pouring rain and everything feels wrong, like there's static in his head that pulses louder and softer with no rhyme or reason. The day goes by, but there's barely any focus he's able to put into it.
Everything feels wrong-- fake? And sometimes when that thundering, white-noise-esque buzzing crescendos in his head, momentarily a spectral creature, looming and metallic and impassive, might be glimpsed hovering directly over him, if only for a second or two.
He'll spend the whole day wandering about Aldrip-- suspicious of what's real and what isn't, never quite feeling right. There's something hidden from them, something they can't see, aren't allowed to see, and none of this can be real.]
Misc.
[hit me up fam i am out here to have a good time. lmk if you want anything specific because open top levels are hard and i'm happy to write individualized starters.
I'm good for anything from slice of life to memory regains to dumb delinquent bullshit to conspiracy theorizing! Just let me know around what point of the event it is (Beginning, middle, end, etc) so we know the general Suspicion vibe.]
[It's something he always dreads, if only because the guy cares too much. A meetup with his Uncle. They'd initially been distant, but Kotetsu had gotten dramatically more involved after the deaths of his parents. (How did they die? Who were they? Weirdly, these are questions he never thinks to ask. It's just What Happened, and it's Well Known, and there's no use in going over all those details.) While Shinjiro had always pulled back, fiercely independent-- he at least owed the guy these checkups.
Which is why he's hanging outside at one of the local cafes, idly poking at his drink with a spoon, and waiting for Kotetsu to show up. Just one of their once-or-twice a week meetups, how is everything going, are you sure you don't need help, I'm worried about you, etc etc etc. He'll argue that he's doing fine, and Kotetsu will get that Sad but Accepting look, and he'll be free for a few more days to do nothing with his life.
After all, Aldrip is perfect. There's no chance of failure.
He glances up as the other guy approaches, barely straightens from where he's sitting, and gestures to the seat across from him.]
[It's a routine that's been going on for some time, now, long enough to not really think about how long -- these meetups are just something that happen every few days to a week, just as sure as the weather in Aldrip is to be beautiful on every one of those days.
And as usual, Kotetsu is running a few minutes late to said meetup, having either gotten lost en route to the agreed upon location, distracted by various situations that took full advantage of a sucker good samaritan who can never quite ignore someone who could use a hand, or occasionally both.
Where Shinjiro barely straightens up as Kotetsu approaches, the older man waves enthusiastically at his nephew as he moves to join him and sit down, bright grin hoping to call attention away from his somewhat ruffled clothes which may or may not have resulted from trying to chase down a little girl's runaway cat. It's fine.]
Hey, thanks. Oh--that reminds me, I got you something too!
[He somewhat hastily fishes into a bag that's perhaps seen some better days and bringing out a small package. Inside are a pair of leather fingerless gloves. It would almost have been a cool gift, if not for the wrist bones painted on it tipping them over into tryhard territory.]
The guy at the shop said they're super popular with kids your age, so I hope you like 'em.
[He looks so pleased with himself. Is this is better or worse than jumping straight into the Concerned Uncle spiel? Might be a tossup, honestly.]
[Kotetsu being late is also nothing new. The guy's a busybody. Always has been. He'd drop everything to help a stranger, seemingly unable to prioritize any one person over another. The kid with a cat is just as, if not more, important than being on time. And so Shinjiro doesn't look surprised or even taken aback at him rolling up in a flurry of energy.
It's exhausting. But at least the guy means well.
His brows go up, and he looked over the glove. Garish, ridiculous-- His friend Gideon will love them. Not that he'll tell Kotetsu that. No sense in making things even more awkward.]
Thanks. Gotta wonder around when I stop being a 'kid', though.
[it's pointed, but without any fire or anything behind it. After all, the guy is just... like this.]
[kakashi was trying to sneak up on the older delinquent - probably not with as much success as he hoped - when the mischievous fairy snatched his wallet. amused but eager to help, kakashi leaps out from the corner he was hiding around, revealing himself grandly.]
I'm right here! [now how he is going to get the fairy when he's way shorter than the older boy, is anyone's guess.] Let's chase it down!
[You know what, spunky child who could work on their stealth? Great response, he can use you, welcome to the team. And so Shinjiro nods, and gestures for Kakashi to follow.]
We can try and cut it off, or maybe slug it with a rock.
[That fairy does not look excited at the prospect of having to dodge rocks?]
[Hell yeah, kid, that enthusiasm will get you everywhere.]
Alright. Sounds like you're on run-and-gun. I'll try and keep the thing close enough to you. Grab 'em and launch when you got a clear shot.
[The fairy has clearly not planned for this level of resistance. With the weight of its prize, it can't gain much more altitude, and so instead beats its tiny little wings harder in an attempt to escape around a corner.]
You get it from here, I'll cut it off on the other side of the building.
[Levi's twitchy, like he's on uppers or needing a fix, but he's fine right now. It's just those objects, these memories or dreams or whatever they were, he couldn't get them off of his mind. It was as much an addiction a drug was now.]
I though...I-i don't know. I touch them and they disappear, but no one else seems to notice them.
[Objects disappearing, fucking with your brain, it feels like reality itself is on the fritz. And so he listens as Levi speaks, carefully nodding at the end. Call them useless washouts, but they know what the hell they've been seeing.]
Yeah. Like it's never anything I'd usually think twice about but...
[His brows furrow, and he reaches up a hand to brush his bangs back, just a little more out of his eyes as he thinks aboutbhow to describe it ]
Like earlier, just checking the clock and it was noon, and I swear everything felt fuckin'-- wrong. Like it shouldn't have existed. Like just people up and being around was weird.
[How does he explain that? The nauseating dread of stagnant time and impossability he'd felt for a moment at seeing those clock hands overlapping straight up? Only to blink away the sensation to find there was never a clock to begin with.]
I thought I was just losing it, or Mikey's drug supply was fucked, but... I dunno man.
['It's not the drugs' Levi says and while Shinjiro mostly believes himself he has to wonder if the intensity of Levi's response has something to do with him jonesing.
'It' is hiding something he claims, and Shinjiro had to stop and try to figure out what could possibly be 'It'. Just another type of 'Them' he assumes. It feel ridiculous, crouching down to listen carefully to the conspiratorial whispers of a guy Shinjiro knows is hooked and high way more often than himself but--
There's something that rings true in it, too. Maybe its because it's something he'd like to believe. Something is happening as opposed to them just losing it. So he nods carefully at Levi's attempts to explain it.]
...Like we aren't meant to. But then we do anyway and we get-- whatever the hell it is. Visions or shit.
['visions' feels reductive to say, but he doesn't have a better word. It's like information with no context deposited directly into their mind, shorting and stalling out everything else for a just a moment. Like staring too hard for too long at a magic eye puzzle until you can almost make out something the artist never intended.]
[ It's not uncommon to find Cloud milling around the town square, the older busybody nosy type that he is. When Shinjiro snaps for someone to help him, he breaks out of his daydreaming to take stock of the situation. Jeez, fairies again? Really must be spring if they're causing this much trouble. ]
Hold on. I think I know just the trick.
[ He's going to briefly duck into the nearest store, and after a very quick explanation, he ducks back out — Cloud isn't exactly the tallest guy (hell, Shinjiro has a couple inches on him, despite being younger), but Cloud has a broom in one hand, ready to get serious. The fairies might be willing to play, but, well, so is Cloud. ]
Chase it to me, and I'll knock your wallet down. Seem like a plan?
[His brows furrow for a moment when Cloud ducks into a building-- thankfully the fairies are tiny so they really can't zip away that quickly. But when he reemmerges with a broom, understanding clicks into place, and he nods at the other man.]
Sounds great.
[Leave it to the local helpaholic to be able to put together a solution that quickly. As instructed, he'll start running to work on getting ahead of the fairy careful to dodge the shop stalls that spill a little too far into the streets-- and then finding an adequate crate to be able to use to gain enough height to swat at the fairy and send it scrambling back the direction it came.]
[ Thankfully, Shinjiro's cooperativeness means the follow-up from Cloud is all but secured - a deft swing of the broom catches the fairy by surprise, and in the flurry to avoid being literally swatted in the air has to likely drop its precious cargo, which Cloud promptly swats to the ground, in hopes another fairy doesn't get the bright idea to grab it before he can complete the handover.
...Of course, it doesn't stop Cloud from nearly throwing himself ass over teakettle, having swung the broom with far more force than it was warranted. ]
Guh! C'mon, go bother someone else! [ He's going to continue shaking the broom at the fairies. Hopefully they don't retaliate too hard, when they do. ]
Okay, I think we're clear. ...Probably. [ He's gonna let Shinjiro grab his wallet, standing vigil with the broom after regaining his balance. ]
[ Toph comes stomping up to Shinji, who's currently standing around, bewildered, looking for birds. Toph is not looking for birds. She is angry -- incensed, even -- and shoeless, treading confidently across the ground in a way he's never seen before, navigating around minor obstacles with surety.
Her voice, too, sounds more confident, not just cranky and frustrated like normal. It's cranky and frustrated with some weight behind it. ]
There's something seriously weird going on.
[ She's been tracking down people she likes partly to inform them and partly to ruthlessly interrogate them about what they've experienced. The chocobo farm is a bit out of the way, and she's still shakier than she likes in navigating with her feet, so it's taken her some time to get out here to check Shinji's apprenticeship location. ]
[Instead of a jab at being blind, it's an earnest question-- because here Toph comes. Barreling across the ground, stepping over rocks without a hesitation, and identifying him immediately. Had he been bitching that loud? Or-- what the hell had come over Toph?]
Yeah, I'll say...
[She's not acting strangely in any way, other than suddenly being cured of blindness. But that can't be right, her eyes are still pale and unfocused?]
The hell's gotten into you? [When he asks, it's mostly just confused and casual- though he can't keep himself from lifting a hand and moving it from side to side on front of her as though trying to decide if she can just... magically see now.]
[ Considering Toph loves blind jokes, that's saying something. A deeper part of her that's been pushing its way to the surface lately has her acting on instinct, and she snaps out a hand to slap his away.
Damn, why can't her earthbending come back to her that easily? She knows it's supposed to just feel right. Right like harassing people for waving a hand to check if she's really blind. ]
I keep finding things and remembering things and I know it's real. I can see things with my feet! I can't make that up!
[It's yet another beautiful day in Aldrip. Or is it?
The weather certainly is an unusual one. Akechi can't even remember when was the last time he had seen it pour down quite like this. Luckily, he had noticed the rain before going out for his business and managed to grab an umbrella in time.
Of course, the rain wasn't the only oddity. Akechi could tell that there was something very off about the town overall. There was clear tension of anxiety in the air, and whoever he came across seemed to be dazed or otherwise out of it. Some of them stopping all of the sudden and staring into the distance, as if they saw something that wasn't there.
And... it'd be lying to say that Akechi himself wasn't affected by the strangeness. He felt strangely nervous too, the hair on the back of his neck were up and standing as if a constant dread was looming over him.
But then he notices a very familiar looking figure standing under a shelter. Like a animal caught in a rain.]
['An animal caught in the rain' isn't too far off. Shinjiro is pressed back against the side of the building, as though to keep himself as much under the awning as possible. He'd definitely been dressed for yet another comfortable, mild day in Aldrip-- and so now his arms are folded to stave off the uncommon chill, and his hair is soaked and stuck to his head and face. Despite that, when Akechi approaches with an umbrella and a tease, his expression softens into something more amused. Because hell- at least one of them has to be able to laugh at themselves.]
Yeah, I forgot it was gonna rain for the first time in like six months...
[He's not sure he even owns an umbrella. A jacket with a good, probably. But what was the point of the umbrella?]
Guess your planning ahead's really winning out for you today.
You know there are ways to determine the rain. [He shrugs, gesturing the air casually with his free hand. His need to be a showoff is briefly overshadowing the reason withing his mind. So, never mind that the rain alone should be something to be suspicious of.]
I was going to share the shade with you. But I can't say I was very impressed by the little stunt you pulled on the network the other day.

[Though it's not like he's got much cash in the wallet anyway, so... RIP if it's gone forever, he'll be fine.]

You're really not helping your case!! Maybe say please??
[this is so productive...]
towards the countdown
I see you forgot something at home.

Yeah, I forgot it was gonna rain for the first time in like six months...
[He's not sure he even owns an umbrella. A jacket with a good, probably. But what was the point of the umbrella?]
Guess your planning ahead's really winning out for you today.

I was going to share the shade with you. But I can't say I was very impressed by the little stunt you pulled on the network the other day.
