{Mini Event} Day of Devotion

DAY OF DEVOTION

This is an entirely opt-in very casual event that has nothing to do with overarching storyline and is just an additional introductory log, and a means for characters to meet. We hope you've all had a very happy Valentine's Day week however you've chosen to spend it!

SCARVES OF LOVE

The season of affection and love of all kinds falls upon Aldrip in the wake of their festivities for Those Who Were There. As part of the celebration, what's referred to as the 'Day of Devotion,' local merchants carry a variety of wares, but none so coveted as their multicoloured scarves available in a variety of prints, designs, and fabrics. Perhaps consider picking one up and giving it to someone who's important to you. No money? No problem! Whilst Aldrip doesn't exactly work on a layaway system or akin to, you'll find the mercantile business owners are quite open to trades and other means of bartering. Maybe they'll give out a scarf or two in agreement for running some errands...

Lucky recipients of these very fashionable scarves will find themselves suspiciously open to sharing positive, warm and fuzzy, or perhaps downright amorous feelings toward the person who gifted them the scarf to begin with, regardless of whether you've known them for years or even just a couple of weeks. But don't worry—the feelings are temporary! Once the Day of Devotion comes to a natural conclusion, your feelings will return to something like normalcy and you'll still wind up with a new fashion accessory. Of course, if you've always been amorous with that special someone, you likely won't notice any sort of change.

Take the opportunity to embrace the celebration, maybe embrace one another a little bit, too, and begin forming some potentially everlasting bonds with others.

BRING PROTECTION

Not everyone is choosing to celebrate the Day of Devotion in the same way. Due to the heightened popularity of the pretty scarves, some of Aldrip's jewellers have been bitten by the green bug of jealousy. In an attempt to compete with the sales of scarves, jewellers are advertising pendants, brooches, and other assorted charms that are meant to serve as warding and protective trinkets. What are they protecting one from? It's difficult to say and the merchants aren't inclined to give a straight answer. But whether you need protection from love, personal feelings, or perhaps something more physical, they've got you covered!

If you choose to give these amulets to others, recipients of them and their related will be compelled to share their true feelings with those around them in addition to the person who gave them the protective charms. This sounds like it could be a good thing, however, that means it covers the array of positive, negative, and every shade in between, without a filter in place. Consider these accessories a potential test of friendships, familial relationships, and more.

Like the scarves, this need and desire to be truthful with your feelings will be temporary, lasting until the Day of Devotion celebration is over. But at least you'll be protected. From something. Maybe. Probably. Or not!

FLOWERS FOR ALDRIP

By now, you may be well familiar with Aldrip's variety of fields that are filled with vegetables and fruits that grace the dinner tables of the town and local cuisine. During the Day of Devotion and weeks leading up to it, you'll find that they're clearing another field and preparing the soil. What for, you won't find out until the actual day of the celebration. Once it arrives, there's a collection of simple carts filled with flowering plants. Locals and newly-arrived alike are welcome to lend a hand in planting them along the neatly tilled rows.

You may find plants that resemble or are identical to plants from your home world. You may find plants that you've never seen in your life. They come in a variety of colours and are accompanied by a lightly pleasing scent that shouldn't be too overpowering, though may still disturb those with allergies.

All who help out with the planting, watering, and other tending, will be rewarded with a bouquet of flowers that can be passed onto others to show your appreciation and other forms of affection. You may even find yourself making a good and lasting impression on the locals by offering some assistance.

I.~Scarves~
[It doesn't occur to Stede to run errands, really, and so no scarves for him. But he is looking at them and admiring them, running his fingers against the soft wool or silk or cashmere and thinking of someone he'd like to give them to. At someone's approach, though, he'll smile]

Beautiful, aren't they?

II. ~Jewelry~

[he does get a few pieces of jewelry however, mostly dragonfly brooches and one unicorn brooch that he wears pinned to his collar. He'll approach people who look like they might need some protection, or just a better day]

Hey, have you seen these yet?

III. ~Flowers~
[Stede has helped with the watering a little, and is given a bouquet of Forget-Me-Not that he carries around. He will also give a flower to someone that looks like they need it, or you can catch him experimenting with putting them in his hair, though it's clear he's not sure about it]

I - It's curtains scarves for you! Lacy, gently wafting curtains scarves

[It doesn't take long for Rinoa to get curious about the festive atmosphere, getting drawn into a merchant's booth quite easily. There it's so easy for her to get lost looking at the sheer variety of scarves on display. They're beautiful! One scarf in particular has caught her attention and no matter how often she strays away from it. She always returns. Giving it fleeting, longing looks even when trying to focus on other things. But you're not supposed to get a scarf for yourself, you give them to others! So resist she must.]

or

[Alternatively, she's happy to approach others looking at scarves. Already having reached an agreement with the vendor for her to have two scarves for giving away. What's a little beast hunting in exchange for a present? She can handle basic beasties. It's not a worry. So, upon spotting another person who's clearly a fellow outsider, Rinoa can't help but approach them.]

I think it suits you. [A warm smile.] Don't worry, I don't work here.

II - It's a charming occasion

[If Rinoa's got to be stuck in a strange world where things could go very wrong at any time? It's nice to have such cute traditions. Upon arriving, she'd given her black ribbon armlet up at the altar, only for the universe to give her a new armlet not that long after. Even if it's not actually a protective amulet... it's pretty and that's honestly more than enough for Rinoa.

A few extra trinkets are carefully selected and then Rinoa's out of the store and actively looking for people. In her hurry, she almost bumps into someone, but catches herself at the last second. The protective amulet at work already? Who can say?]

Ooops. Sorry! [A sheepish smile, an offer of help if it's needed.] I'll pay more attention from now on.

[A pause. Maybe this is Fate?]

Hey, do you have an amulet yet? The vendor said they're helpful for this time of year and a local tradition!

[She holds out her hands palm up, holding out a few different options of varying designs.]

Do you want one? I think you should have one.

[If they hesitate she'll pick one out and hold it out to them. Which is completely normal behavior for her actually. No event needed to be this forward.]

How about.... this one?

III - Recreating a Promised Place

[It's a surprise, one that stops Rinoa short when she sees them. Those flowers. They look like.. they look like. The poor thing almost shorts out for a moment. A look of longing crossing over her face for a few moments before she shakes it off.

Now's not the time to fall apart Rinoa. Keep it together. Make them proud. Taking a deep breath, Rinoa is quick to promise assistance to some of the workers and is soon kneeling in the dirt and planting a bunch of flowers very carefully. Maybe this isn't the sort of work she did normally, but she's quick to catch on.

She's not a fan of the dirt, but maybe... maybe if she can make a field like that one... maybe one day it'll work again. So she puts in the work. Nothing obtained without something given in return after all and if this means she's going to want a nice, long bath later well... it'll be worth it. Feel free to run into her while she's working!]

or

[Afterwards, having obtained a bouquet for her help as well as a bag containing a few plants for her own use, Rinoa heads back into town with a smile on her lips. It's nice to feel productive sometimes. Even if her knees are still dirty despite her best efforts. But is she ashamed? No, it's from honest effort. So she doesn't think to hide, instead she's still quick to walk up to people she meets.]

Hey. You look like you could use a flower. [Reaching into her bouquet she'll pick out a single stem before holding it out to them with a playful wink.] Much better!

⚡ flashion statement
[ You might not know it by looking at him, but Law's not exactly a fashion-forward kind of guy. He's dressed for mobility and flexibility over all, the color scheme somewhat incidental, and the few direct, personal choices he has made are all, uh. Wolf-themed. (He has a brand and he owns it, fight him any day of the week about it.) It's curiosity that brings him over to the festivities in the first place, but he'd have done a hard left at all the flowy, fancy, fashion-y things right off if only he hadn't been captured by an eager stall owner looking to foist their wares off onto him. Does he just have "easy mark" written across his forehead, or something? Not the "can't say no" kind of easy, but the "will say yes to anything once" kind.

Well, it may not be written anywhere visible, but wherever it is written, it's clearly to blame for how he ends up the proud owner of a fancy new scarf. Which, y'know, is great and all, except a scarf has no business anywhere in his ensemble, and for another thing: ]

I really don't think pink's my color. You sure it's gotta be this one?

[ Oh, yes, absolutely this one. It's a very strategic move, sticking him with one he almost certainly won't want to keep for himself, playing up how very high-quality it is, how special, how nice. Law doesn't know the first thing about whether that's true or not (he thinks the giant wolf head he wears on his shoulder that he paid 10 whole gald for is "nice"), but one thing he isn't is wasteful. He's not about to toss something that could have its uses.

Namely, if it's so nice, maybe he can trade it for something better. So he stakes out the stall, watching to see if anyone else is eying those scarves, and then makes his best attempt at confidently walking up, modeling the latest and greatest in pastel pink florals around his neck, to get that shopper's attention. ]

Hey, if you want one'a those, I'll trade you mine for something. Pretty fancy, right? I'll cut you a better deal than they will.

⚡ tailisman
[ Okay, so scarves are definitively Not It. And jewelry? Also ordinarily would be Not It, as far as he's concerned. Dropping money or even trading something useful for baubles is just about the dumbest thing Law can think of, coming from a world where there's not enough of anything to go around. He's on his way past all those booths at a hasty pace, only to stop completely short so suddenly you can almost hear the comical brakes-screeching sound.

There was only one thing that could possibly get him to stop. You know what it is.

It's a wolf. Of course.

Immediately, the salesperson smells a buyer. How much? Law asks, trying to be shrewd about it and failing to account for the fact that his interest is not only plain as day, but also really easy to infer, considering. Y'know. The pauldron. The salesperson highballs. Law instantly balks. Oh, okay. Thanks anyway. But then they launch into an explanation of the charm's protective properties, something (fictionally) bolstered by the symbolic properties of the noble wolf. It's a great accessory, to be sure, and it's magical qualities ensure that whoever wears it will always feel the safety of their pack surrounding them.

Law, a pack animal through and through, needs no further convincing. Which is great, except he still can't quite manage a pricetag like the one the salesperson is trying to fleece him for. So here he is, taking up space at the stall, longingly admiring this completely average wolf charm. ]

Man... I shoulda traded that scarf for this.

⚡ flawral arrangement
[ Dig in the dirt to get on the good side of the people? Absolutely. That's not even such a far cry from working on a farm, is it, really? ...Well okay, yeah, a little, but look. Farm work isn't just about messing about with the animals all the time. There's a lot of dirt involved. And mud. And manure.

So yeah, flower soil is a step up!

What starts off as "sure, I can help for a minute" winds up being nearly half a day of digging, planting, watering, and getting a full crash-course on garden work. He ends his accidental shift absolutely covered in dirt, streaked across his face like war paint and so caked under his nails it'll be a miracle if he ever gets them clean. For his trouble, he gets a cheerful-looking bunch of larkspur, a fitting flower for someone naturally inclined to levity and lightheartedness. Which is great, except like almost everything else today, it's a little bit lost on a dust devil like him. He's going to need some help. ]

Hey, uh, what'm I supposed to do with these? I don't know the first thing about keeping flowers alive or anything.

🕊️ i. Uncanny expressions of love (Jewelry)
[ No matter how anyone can look at it—the majority of the textile options will clash with his usual attire. Which is not actually the reasons he avoids those actually. Yet it is how they say... When in Rome you should do as the Romans do. That mentality is how someone like Nikolai finds himself perusing through various sparkling penchants and meandering alongside crystal clear cases of jewelry.

The initial search for what he wants most is not very fruitful. Regardless of whether the nearest person is actually being employed to assist at the stall he pauses to address them. ]

Terribly sorry to interrupt. Have you seen many animal themed options?

[ Sounds like he's looking for something specific. ]

🕊️ ii. Now you see it, and now you don't! (Flowers)
[ As a matter of fact he should be lending a hand in handing out bouquets. For some time he did comply with that expectation but it was only a matter of time before that started to get stale.

With flick-like flourish a red rose that was once held in Nikolai's gloved hand swiftly disappears from sight. A shimmering gold engulfs the space it was in and in its place a spider lily appears.

The magic trick is quick, hard to follow. For most passers-by the trade will be too swift, and too abstract to check the first time. Yet the most observant may notice that the flowers are trading places. Where one is held between Gogol's fore finger and thumb the other lays atop a table to the side.

It is that spider lily that he offers for someone else to take. ]

Shall we make a trade?

1. Never Gonna Give You Up
[ Peter's taken a shine to the brooches -- shiny, golds, and metals are way more his style. Plus, scarves are more Gamora's thing. He's not really sure what they'd protect him from -- alien attacks? Whoever is behind their crime papers? But free is free, and he's not about to complain.

He's managed to find... very creative "brooch" if it can be called that. It sure called to him though, so he had to have it. He's got a few more star-themed ones, all pinned to his jacket like he's a con-goer in the late 00s. He's just in a good mood and happy to chat up strangers. You just happen to be the lucky one today!
]

So, what do you think they're protecting us from? I mean, it has to be something, right? Some legend they aren't telling us about or something?

2. Kiss From A Rose (came out in 95 but w/e)
[ Peter is not a manual labor guy. He can fix an engine, check a fuel gauge and chart a path along the stars, but planting flowers? Tilling soil? He simply can't do it. Picking and watering, that he can do. His visor may not totally work yet, but it's useful enough in catching the differences between flowers, and helping the locals build bouquets and whatnot.

So what if he looks super out of place, in his full gear, and with his visor enabled, hunched over a bed of flowers and hovering over each of them. Maybe if he can't pull data off a network, he can start making his own entries?
]

Hey, you! Help me out a sec. Do you know what this flower's called?

[ He doesn't recognize a lot of these -- but it's not because they're weird. Quite the opposite. Surrounded by earth flowers, he can probably name roses, sunflowers, daisies and... that's it. He could use a little help. ]

Or, uh, what do they call 'em where you're from?

I. Swish and style

[The scarves are too beautiful not to want one, and Ethlyn is conscious that she's going to need more than simply the clothes she arrived in if she's going to be presentable every day.

The 'Day of Devotion' is providing ample opportunity, and of course it's impossible not to look at the scarves--they seem to be the main event.]

It's meant to be a gift? [She says to the merchant she's just bought one from.] Hm... I'm not sure who I'll give it to. But I'm sure I'll find someone here.

II. A unique charm

[A charm of protection. Ethlyn isn't so sure about these--she's got a suspicion that the peddlers would be peddling them under any justification, and their evasive answers only double that impression.

Still, she'd be lying if she said she didn't like looking at jewelry. She's looking at a brooch carved in the shape of a horse's head... enchanted or no, she can't help but feel drawn to it.]

Well... I don't know if I believe all the claims, but it would be rather nice to wear.

[And there are two. Why not... buy both? Ethlyn finds herself not pinning one on her cape, but just looking at them.]

III. Floral notes

Oh... it's lovely.

[That's what Ethlyn thinks, and says, when she arrives at the field that had been so mysteriously cleared--her curiosity brought her here as soon as she learned that it was being used for the Day of Devotion.

Soon enough, she's on her knees in the tilled rows, helping to plant the waiting flowers. It's very... satisfying to put something beautiful in the ground, knowing that it will keep growing and thriving. She smiles softly and looks to the person nearest her.]

I think I'm going to keep coming back here. What a lovely idea, don't you think?

01. Scarves of Love
[She isn't really sure what they're celebrating this time and it feels like it was only a couple of weeks ago that they had that over-the-top festival. Day of Devotion certainly has a romantic ring to it, though. Aerith knows as well as anyone, however, that there's multitudes of kinds of love. The love she experiences for her friends is just as important as the love she has for Elmyra, and just as important as affection she's felt in her past.

It's still hard to believe that if she weren't brought here, she'd still be sitting in a laboratory. So many of the others are in a complicated situation. Taken from places they didn't deserve to be taken from. Yet she's grateful. More so to know that Cloud is in this world with her. She can't help wondering if she would have seen him again back home.

She likes to think she would, but that is neither here nor there. At the stall with the scarves, she wears a thoughtful frown as she looks over the different scarves that are on display.]

Hm. Do you have anything that maybe a serious guy would like?

[Because of course she wants to get something for Cloud. Something to thank him for everything he's done for her. It'll probably make him uncomfortable to hear such a thing, but he's important.]

02. Flowers for Aldrip
[The moment she notices that many of Aldrip's townspeople are getting things together for the field of flowers they're working on, Aerith wastes very little time in trying to weave herself right in with the rest of the locals. Many have mistaken her already for being a part of this world by default. She feels plain in comparison. Someone who can easily disguise herself among the others. Those who belong in this world, however, seem to know her almost immediately.

Yet they don't stop her from joining them. In fact, they put her right to work. She has a little section to herself with neat soil and there's a small little collection of young plants at her side that she's planting one by one. Once each one's in the ground, she reaches for the watering can she's filled up preemptively, though she realises she's filled it maybe a little too much.

She pauses the first person to pass by by trying to invade that personal space as nicely as she can manage.]

Hi, do you think you could help me out? I filled it a little too much and it's too heavy for me to pick up. I just need a little help watering the flowers.

[Help a princess girl out, would you?]

01. Protective Wards
I was wondering if you could answer a few questions for me.

[Kisara starts out addressing the merchant of the stall, but it seems they're fairly preoccupied. Or they at least need a moment to work through their things. Not wanting to interrupt them too much more, she looks through the various little protective trinkets they're selling. Lots of necklaces and charms. They feel a little too fancy for someone like her to be even looking at, but if she's honest, she's not looking for herself.

She'd like to get something for the others from back home. She can't be with them all of the time, after all. They don't need her to be either. She'd rest a little easier knowing they were safe, however. As she's taking down a pendant with what looks like an onyx sphere at the end, she tilts her head.]

Oh, sorry. [She begins, addressing the nearest person at her side. Maybe they'll have the answer she's looking for.] Did they say what these protected against? I was thinking about getting a few.

02. Green Thumb
[She'll be the first to admit that she doesn't really know very much about plants or how to take care of them. Autelina Palace has no shortage of them outside and they're very well kept by the staff, but it's just not something Kisara's ever really done much of herself. As such, when it comes to the actual planting, she's not inclined to get too involved. There are better things for her to get to work over.

So while the others are getting on their hands and knees, planting, watering, fertilising, whatever else they might be getting up to, Kisara has kept herself busy by carrying some of the larger things. Bags of mixed potting soil, cartons of flowers for planting, and so on. Taking a moment to catch her breath, she lifts a loved hand and sweeps the back of it across her forehead.]

This is really making us earn our keep, isn't it? [She gestures towards whatever you might have in tow.] You need help with any of that? I'm not super strong, but I can probably move it without much trouble wherever you need it to go.

i. color blind
[It probably comes as no surprise for someone dressed like this that he has absolutely no idea what he’s doing when it comes to fashion...and yet here he is, looking totally clueless as he eyes the scarves. He's already wearing a scarf, why are they trying to sell him on this? He's listening to a sales pitch about one particular scarf in hand—a little purple number. The salesperson is going on and on and on about color. It's kind of a lot.]

Mauve? [He makes it sound like he's never spoken the word out loud before.] And here I thought it was just purple...

[Mostly, he's looking out of his element. But he flashes a smile if you catch his eye.]

Who knew color was so complicated?

ii. bling protection
[Maybe he should have learned his lesson from the scarves, but he, uh. Didn't. Besides, accessories like this are way more up his alley...or so he thinks at first, but as he starts actually looking at the items for sale, he realizes that he can't actually tell what sort of protections they have on them just by looking. He's even tried picking up a few at a time to see if any of them…feels different or something? Is he doing this right?

The one in hand at the moment is a small brooch in the shape of an owl. A quick, almost nostalgic smile flickers across his face before he puts it down.]

I can't tell what any of these are supposed to do. [Mostly talking out loud at first, picking up an ornate golden wristband.] Have you tried them? Any idea what they're supposed to be "protecting" against?

iii. weeds are flowers, too
[The two things Alphen has realized he needs most are information and money, and in his experience, the easiest way to get either is to help people out. Luckily, the people around here are asking for help! Sounds like a subquest to me. For parts of the day, Alphen can be found lugging around bags of soil, fertilizer, and other heavy things that need a strong set of hands for hauling. He might ask for help with little things like opening a door or moving something out of the way.

Later, he's put to work getting his hands dirty—literally. "Pull out the weeds" seems like a pretty easy job, and he's already wearing gloves, so it all makes sense. But right now, he's standing in front of rows and rows of flowers, hands on his hips, squinting into the dirt at...other flowers and little plants. They all look the same to him.]

[With all of the merchants bringing out fancy new wares, it's hard not to take interest in the celebration. Although so far the information on Those Who Were There strikes Seimei as vague and mysterious, he knows that participation is the best way to learn about a new environment. Maybe he can get a bit closer to these gods if he joins in with the locals?

The problem is, Seimei is having trouble getting one of those coveted scarves. It seems like it would be easy enough to trade for one, but when you don't want to give up your precious few personal items and you're on the lazy side... well. Mostly he looks sadly at everyone else wearing fancy scarves.]

They're lovely, but how do people afford such things? I'd rather not go on a quest... what if something bad happens?

ii. bring protection

Excuse me!

[Okay, so he's had a few road blocks, but Seimei has at least managed to buy one thing during this celebration. He has his prize safely wrapped up in a handkerchief and now just has to take the next step to investigate the local customs: finding a recipient for the gift. He flags down whomever seems idle and possibly interested in the merchants hawking their items nearby.]

Hello, I was hoping to borrow a little bit of your time? I'll buy you a drink to repay you. I just need a little assistance.

iii. wildcard

[Seimei is here to experiment with the fancy items and possibly cause trouble trying to figure out what they do. i. bring protection

[ Somehow -- and Zhou Zishu is not entirely sure how -- even in another world he has found himself at the mercy of an auntie fussing over how skinny he looks. His own fault for trying to be helpful, he supposes, but the woman's entire table had been in danger of tipping over thanks to a sudden crush of people, and it hadn't taken much for him to step over and right it before everything crashed to the ground. The fact that the auntie had immediately started gushing over his unexpected strength hadn't stopped her from telling him he needs to eat more in the next breath.

He has so far fended off any attempts to feed him, but his luck runs out when the woman finally huffs and presses a small broach into his hands with a look that says he will take it if he knows what's good for him. She rattles off a number of promises of protection it will bring and is already turning to another customer before Zhou Zishu manages to get a word in edgewise. It leaves him standing there nonplussed, staring down at the piece of shimmering metal he has found himself stuck with. ]

I hate being thanked. [ It's grumbled mostly under his breath considering the gifter is very much not paying attention to him anymore. But when he catches someone looking out of the corner of his eye, he turns towards them to lift a sardonic eyebrow and offering the brooch out. ] In need of protection?

ii. flowers for aldrip

[ Curiosity had taken him out to the fields and experience had put him to work. Hours later, what Zhou Zishu has to show for it is a good deal of soil around the hem of his long robes and a bundle of utterly unfamiliar flowers. Presumably he's supposed to be giving them out or something, but instead Zhou Zishu is eyeing a particularly bright red bloom with something that looks a lot more analytical than it does appreciative. ]

Could just boil it and see what happens.

[ He is, of course, joking, as the smile he offers a passing side-eye promises. He wouldn't just experiment with unknown plants. Unless...? ]

i. scarves of love

[Wen Kexing can't resist the fancy looking scarves. They all look extravagant and colorful in a way he assumes must come from great wealth. Of course he's going to poke at every merchant stall and display, admiring them all. All of the vendors tell him he can barter for other items or even run some errands in exchange for one, but he's having a hard time settling on an agreement.]

Ah, maybe later. I want to keep looking!

[All of the scarves look fine, but that's the problem.]

I need to find the best one.

ii. flowers of Aldrip

[Wen Kexing doesn't necessarily mean to volunteer himself as free labor. He originally just came to look at all the flowers, but when some of the young local children came up and insisted he dig and garden too... well, he was apparently planting flowers and pulling weeds now. Or he's trying to, anyway. Transplanting flowers isn't too difficult, but weeding new areas is a bit more complicated. When Wen Kexing grabs a fistful of green plants and yanks them all out at once, he ends up getting scolded.]

What do you mean those are flowers too? They don't look like flowers! Tch, why are you planting so many things you won't use anyway? These aren't edible.

[How did he get in trouble already?]

iii. wildcard

[I'm happy to trade feelings for scarves or brooches, although Wen Kexing is already very emotionally open and honest about how he feels. He's happy to flirt with hot guys for fun, but I'm also happy to thread cute things, arguments, or chats about other people. He can give really bad advice?]

[When word of the festivities surrounding the Day of Devotion reaches Saito, his first reaction is to stay the hell away from it. Not only it reeks of a cheesy and old-fashioned nickname for Valentine's Day, festivities also equal hoards of people on the streets — and what good is a group of people for when he can't murder them? Although, the opportunity to get his target a (cheap but) heartfelt gift, for a chance to help mend her trust in him was too good to pass up.

It was with that objective in mind that he found himself checking out the goods crafted by an old couple of merchant artisans, which consisted of collections of their best scarves and pieces of jewelry, many of which fit each other well aesthetically due to their joint production. Upon explaining he was looking for a gift for an eighteen-year-old girl, the old woman quickly took over, navigating him through a bunch of the finest jewelry in Aldrip, many of which crafted by her husband. Not bothered with actually wasting time picking, he added that the girl liked rabbits, and that any rabbit-themed jewelry would likely please her.

At this, the old woman beamed ecstatically, seemingly jumping to conclusions. "My", he heard her exclaim, "if that's the case, I have the perfect gift for your girlfriend!"

Saito merely went along with that misunderstanding: the old lady was hellbent on finding the perfect gift for this "cute young couple". There was no reason to ruin her delusional excitement, as it was advantageous for him as well. Ultimately, what she offered him was a rabbit-shaped scarf that not only seemed to be exactly the kind of cutesy accessory he would find in stores (online or otherwise) all across Japan, but also its rabbit-shaped charm counterpart. Both at a very generous price, no less (nearly at a two for the price of one ratio, proving that going along with the misunderstanding paid off). Perhaps that coincidence added to the fact that both accessories were the same color as Adorabbit meant that the rabbit's curse over Mizuki had only mysteriously gotten stronger since she came to this world.

Now with the right tools in hand, he contacts her through the golden charm, and arranges to meet in a nearby, quiet square, away from the hustle and bustle of the ongoing celebration... and the hoards (and eyes) of people.

SCARVES OF LOVE.

[ There's talk, scattered through the merchants as he makes his way back from a simple delivery job, about some festive celebration that will give rise to silly things like love and affection in the air: but more importantly, more coin and trade in the hands of those selling wares for the purpose of it. It seems this celebration, whatever it is, means that he's less likely to be able to pocket any sort of coin and more likely to have payment for his services rendered as something a little less useful; it's a sour face that meets this realization, once he pushes his hands down into the worn pockets of his uniform and finds less there than he should.

He's tending to stacking a few boxes, back behind one of the stalls, finishing up the last of his work--and as his chin lifts, a small bead of sweat muddled down his jaw, he finds himself alarmingly close to someone browsing the local wares of this particular merchant, admiring some of the scarves hung up around the opening to entice people to buy. He imagines that it's mostly a celebration for those that would wear such pretty things: then again, maybe it's just all the delicate, beautiful ones on display to attract those in to shop for others. Embarrassed, he lifts up a gloved hand to touch at his jawline, dabbing away the sweat from his work.

It's awkward, but in this place, he doesn't think too many people know what to do or how to go about any of it--so he does what a real hero might do, and opens his mouth. ]

You interested? [ He might get mistaken for a merchant, at this rate, though the heavy sword at his back likely dissuades the idea. ] Think I get one of these on the house, but I'm not gonna use it, so if you want one...

[ Awkwardly, he leaves the offer open ended. ]

BRING PROTECTION.

[ Something pretty but practical, like the scarves, at least make sense to him--but as he's heading back to the inn, where Aerith should be, he realizes with some annoyance that other merchants, those specializing in jewelry, are selling trinkets of their own. They're for warding, he hears a jovial voice call out over the sound of the crowd: protection from evil, from terrible things, from all that one's imagination can create!

With his narrowed gaze, he leans in closer to one of the stalls: sure, these little trinkets look alarmingly similar, in some ways, to the accessories they used to use back home for protection. But if the vendors won't even be straight about what they really do, can they really be trusted? Folding his arms against his chest, he examines the wares and, idly, notices someone near him doing the exact same thing.

The desire to remain unnoticed has him biting his tongue for a moment--but honestly, if he's going to try to make it here, at least for as long as it'll take to get back home, he's going to have to create a reputation all over again. This means, unfortunately, more word of mouth. ]

Pretty sure these won't do any good. [ He's quiet, so it could be mistaken for him talking to himself. ] What do you need to be protected from?

[ There, now it's more obvious he's talking to the person next to him. His blue-green gaze flickers up, slightly, before jerking back down again, swallowing. ]

FLOWERS FOR ALDRIP.

[ Does he know a thing or two about gardening? Absolutely not.

But in theory, it makes sense. For one, he knows not to step on them once they're grown--that part is apparently important, and it seems obvious. They need sunlight, and water, and beyond that, maybe the right soil, but if any of these flowers are like the ones that Aerith used to tend to, way back in the slums, he has no idea. Either way, they can't be all that different: and though he doesn't have a green thumb, he does have enough training to be able to listen to instructions and execute them. He may have been terrible in training, but--

There's a soft jerk of his thoughts, redirecting him, and his brows crease. Crouched in the dirt, the knees and thighs of his pants smeared with it, he can feel the headache threaten: with a breath, it passes by, as though not comparing himself too closely to anything from before helps, as though letting thoughts of Shinra and SOLDIER float away from him for the moment does more help than harm. With a sigh, he lets his gaze settle on the flower bulbs in front of him. He's nearly done with the row, at least.

Carefully, gloved hands pat down the soil at the roots, eyeing the little nub of the flower bulb that seems to be peeking out of the dirt. ]

...Guess you don't have much to say. [ Yes, he's talking to the flowers: though it would be understandable if someone mistook him for talking to himself. ] Am I just the wrong kind of person? Or are you shy?

[ He gives the mound of dirt another firm pat with his palm, as though trying to reassure the row of flowers otherwise. ]

Shionne Imeris ⛤ Tales of Arise

[personal profile] thornygunner 2023-02-23 06:06 am (UTC)(link)
⛤ Fashionable and Lovely Scarves
As the most fashionable member of her party, Shionne loves clothes. There's nothing wrong with looking good while you fight, run errands, or just live your everyday life. Alphen might not understand it and give her a bit of a hard time about her desire to wear Renan clothes, even if they're a bit dated, over Dahnan clothes, but she doesn't care. When she sees the bright and pretty scarves, she can't help but stop and look at them.

"These are very nice." She has one in particular that she's looking at, and she casually drapes it across her shoulders to see what she looks like with it on. As soon as she dons it, she feels a slight warmth and gives a slight smile. "Hm, yes, I like this one." She turns to the person beside her. "What do you think?"

⛤ Flowers for Alger--Shionne
She's not used to this sort of work. There's really nowhere on Lenegis to grow plants for food. Not wholesale like this. She has seen nearly all of the farms and ranches of Elde Menancia, certainly, but that doesn't mean she stopped to help grow plants. And she left the animal husbandry to Law, since he had what was described as animal magnetism.

However, she was asked to help out in the fields for the price of the pretty scarves and some treats. And, well, both of those things are Shionne's weakness. It's hard work and by the time the locals call it for the day, she's sweaty and a bit dirty, but... She can't help but feel like she's spent a good time doing a good deed for others without using any Astral Artes. As she starts towards the town of Aldrip, a bouquet of roses is put into her hands. "Oh, thank you. I don't..."

The local is gone, leaving her to stare at the flowers until her thorns suddenly begin to spark, causing her to grit her teeth and stumble. "What?"

I. It might just save your life (Charms)

[ The concept of a market was still something that was going to take time to get used to, especially for someone like Zephyr. Calaglia wasn't known for having things as "luxurious" as shops and he'd spent a good thirty-odd years stealing supplies and other various amenities from the soldiers who ruled over the realm with (literal) iron fists. He'd tagged along on a few trips over the past few weeks but he'd never gone out and poked around by himself until today and probably for good reason:

He looked lost and that had been something the merchants took full advantage of. Over the span of an hour he's ushered through no less than a dozen stalls and vendors hawking their wares from scarves (which he'd wound up leaving with four before he'd known what had happened) and finally culminating with a stop to an odd little jewelry stall. It had taken the guy twenty minutes to foist something upon Zephyr in exchange for one of the scarves he'd ended up with, leaving the older Dahnan to stare down at the object he'd dropped into his hand.

They had said it was a crow. The longer Zephyr looks at it, the less certain he is.

Still, it's too late to try and barter for the scarf back. After a long while of staring he looks back over his shoulder towards where the stall was - the owner having vanished to try and find another unwitting Lost Soul - and frowns to himself. ]

...He never did tell me what it's supposed to do.

[ He got that it was supposed to be some sort of protection but... Protection from what? ]

II. A peony for your thoughts?

[ Now, farming? That's something he has a little more experience with. Sort of. When someone had asked if he could help haul a few wheelbarrows down to the field and help plant a few things, Zephyr had been expecting something familiar like, well. Vegetables. Potatoes, beans, that sort of thing, you know? After the fields of wheat and other various crops further out it definitely would've made sense to him.

He didn't expect to see rows and rows of flowers.

A few wheelbarrows of soil and fertilizer turned into a row or two worth of planting seeds, budding flowers, and a few chunks of stems covered in sharp thorns that may or may not have "bitten" Zephyr a few times. The longer they have him digging, the more time he gets to spend marveling over pretty much everything. For instance: the dirt was actually dirt and not hard the hard clay he'd grown up with in the wastes. There were no succulents in sight, and outside of the aforementioned roses none of them were inherently risky to touch. And the colors... Gods, the colors.

Eventually he forces himself to take a break. He could easily go back to Aldrip proper, but no. No, Zephyr hauls himself up onto a few crates off to the side, a damp rag in hand to wipe away as much dirt as he can from his skin, and simply looks. The markets were still new and a little strange to him, yes, but this was... ]

I've never seen anything like this before. It's so... green.

[ Not just green, but the point still stands. ]
