EVENT #14: ADVERSITY 8765456

EVENT #14: YOU'RE A SNAKE I CAN SEE IT IN YOUR FACE

THE STORY SO FAR (click to expand)
-Over time, characters have discovered that the world of Expiation is actually a large, elaborate simulation run by an AI that seems to be intent on helping them atone for their crimes. This news is well-known by the Chosen, enough so that any new character who wishes to handwave this knowledge is able to do so.

-In September 2024, that AI needed to be reset as a consequence of some catastrophic systems failures. So far, there has been no downside to this reset–but the AI has also been strangely absent since then.

-Fandaniel has put his backup of the AI into the system, and now there seems to be an update on devices.

MAP UPGRADE: 80%... .... .... ...

-Viktor has changed some of the Naga from Rumpitur into their original forms -- more or less, further proving that those who live in the cities from before are former Chosen.

OOC NOTE: This event will still go on for ten days OOCly, and the aftermath of the event via the poll will be posted on the 23rd instead of the 22nd.
SSSOMETHING WICKED THIS WAY COMESSS

It seems like the recent arrivals aren't the only guests at Aldrip this month. Beginning on the 12th of the month, the Chosen might notice an increased presence of snakes ─ at first it's in the outskirts and in the fields, where it can be expected, but soon it becomes clear they can show up just about anywhere: in the inn, chilling in the library, and even at homes. They're not aggressive and seem to largely mind their own business, so most will probably assume it's best to leave them be.

Until they begin to speak.

"It'sss time,"

It comes as a soft whisper, cooing to you from beneath your feet as the creature slithers on the ground.

"The sssystem hasss failed you. But you have the power to change that. The power to ssstop it."

You may disregard their words, but they're quite persistent, and will keep following you, promising to share the ways for you to fight back. To find a way out. And, perhaps most importantly, to stop the cycle of sentencing for good.

All you need to do is break the system by doing the very thing it's designed to prevent: committing crimes.

But not just any crimes will do, oh no. The snakes are quick to note that there's little point in trying to antagonize the locals, as they're already part of the system. But the other Chosen? That's who you should target, they say. Steal. Lie. Cheat. Maim. Kill. They cannot stop all of you, but it's up to you if you'll end up as a victim or the victor.

The snakes will not attack or harm those who refuse them, but to those still hesitating or questioning their suggestion, they have one reminder:

"That'sss the price for freedom."

Are you prepared to pay it…?

ENTER THE GATES TO THE GOLDEN GARDEN

CW: SNAKE PICTURES LINKED IN THIS PROMPT

As the lies spill past your teeth or the item that you’ve lifted from another Chosen or the shudder of flesh from your blow, there is an elevation of energy around like the simulation itself is breathing a stuttering breath that it had been holding. Suddenly, they stand before a gilded gate that is partially ajar and welcoming.

In fact, it is the only destination available. All around otherwise is a thick fog with muffled sounds, and if a Chosen decided to avoid the sensation of welcome to enter through the Gate, they will find themselves back in front of it no matter the direction that they consider venturing into. The muffles they may think they are following grows quieter until there is an absolute oppressive silence.

Then they are back at the Gate. The longer they avoid entry, the more the temptation to do so will grow until it is unavoidable.

The moment that they slipped through the gilded elaborate gate, the world around them suddenly bursts forth with the scent of sweet flowers, the musical elation of various bird species serenading to one another, and the soft feel of foliage under bare feet. Wait, when did you lose your shoes? Oh well, the foliage is layered densities of deciduous trees with leaves of red, orange, and most proliferatively green There are fruits weighing down branches, mushrooms peeking from under unfurrowed ferns and other underbrush.

There are game trails that double as winding garden paths. They lazily verge off this way and that, taking a person deeper into this beautiful garden. One could lose themselves here if they aren’t careful for there is a blissful peace at first.

As a Chosen moves around or even just looks around, they will notice snakes sliding through the trees or along the ground in the undergrowth minding their own businesses. Big, small, various coloured and patterned but they’re heading off to wherever a snake concerns itself. There is no other wildlife here regardless of the bird songs. That’s strange, isn’t it?

Wandering around exploring either by following the paths or spelunking into the brush or even clambering through the trees will eventually find two Chosen finding each other. It’s easy to recognize each other because evidence of their crimes is marked on them whether that’s the item the lifted, bruised knuckles or a forked tongue for those who lied. Both are attracted to each other as if the impression that leaving the garden requires a pair.

But how to find their way out? The gilded gate seems to no longer be where one might think, and the forest stretches out in all directions. One could wander hours or days and not make headway on how to leave. Except, there are two common denominators: snakes are the only animals here and bird song is a constant presence no matter how much time passes.

Eagle-eyed Chosen will notice that there are certain snakes with identical colouring and patterning. Keen-eared Chosen will notice that bird songs have a certain tune around a select snake type. What could that mean? Maybe it deserves investigation?

Reticulated Python - East
Eyelash Viper - South
Rubber Boa - North
Red-Spotted Garter - West

Teams need to collect a pair of the same species of snake and follow the bird song that grows louder in a certain direction. If they follow the direction appropriately, they will discover an altar and upon placing their snake pair upon it, a quarter of the map of the garden is revealed. Collect all four pairs and take them to the altars and a map is revealed to allow the pair of Chosen to find their way out of the garden.

EVERYTHING IS NOT AS IT SEEMS

This may all seem easy, but the garden throws a curveball at you. After a little while of exploring, Chosen will start to hallucinate in the Garden. Hallucinations will vary by character – namely the worst possible endings for them. It could be either the worst possible ending in Aldrip, or in their canons, but none of them will receive a happy ending.
None of them.

Among the hallucinations of their home world or their lives, they see others. Other cycles that have ended. Those that have completed the RNG of targeted crimes from the snakes are more likely to see these visions:

Bodies of Chosen with the same tattoos on the back of their hands as the ones who’ve done crimes. The thought of I can’t let them die goes through the Chosen’s heads, and suddenly the Chosen shift. Their bodies become more snakelike, foreign of the humans that they used to be.

I have to save them.

Another scenario, this time a thriving city in a desert. A shadow passes through, almost like a plague as Chosen turn into something monstrous. They start to rip and tear into each other, infecting the next person with the shadows. A thought rips through the current Chosen’s minds, despair as the thoughts of I can’t save them happen.

The image flickers, and cuts. Then there’s just a bunch of ruins in the middle of a desert, former technology buried in the sand.

Another scenario, this time a city surrounded by water. The image looks a little hazy, but... over time, the water rises, and rises. It rises through the tiers of the city, drowning it all in water.

The water recedes, and the life that had been bustling around before are now gone.

I couldn't save them.

ON THE OUTSIDE

Chosen that won’t or haven’t committed crimes may see the Garden. While the ones who have committed crimes will find themselves in front of it automatically, the ones who don’t have to find it. They’ll find it deep in the forest, almost as if when they start looking for it, it starts to call for them. The thought of help them may even enter their minds. Once there, they may even attempt to get into the Garden, but… will find they can’t go through. They cannot fly over it or damage it by any means. Enough attempts at forced entry will have a snake come out of the wall and attempt to bite them. If bitten, Chosen may fall ill and even die – this is up to player’s discretion.

Kurt, however, and the characters he chooses to share the glimpse of the world through his item with, are able to enter the Garden without problems. The hallucinations may affect them still, but are much easier to fight through, as they can see through the illusions. They may notice that everything looks old and withered instead of the vibrance that the others see, almost as if it’s… not real. Something that isn’t really tethered to the world at all.

There may be some that would like to question the Naga-turned-people on the happenings of this, but they seem to have disappeared from where they were living with Viktor. Almost as if they ran from this situation…

WILDCARD Make your own fun! Just because it’s not in the prompts doesn’t mean it’s not possible. Have at it! Go crazy! Try not to break anything (too much)!

So, what was all that about?

[Does it really have anything to do with Scott himself? No, but he's going to ask anyway. Clearly it's something that's been eating inside of Altius since they got here, something to do with his home, and so that's important enough to Scott. He's gotten to care a lot about the old man after all.

It's not like he was talking about how this world is fake or anything like that, not if he's talking about Ferran-- someone that isn't even here. It's something beyond this simulation.]
chimericalclaw: (o: cursed)

[personal profile] chimericalclaw 2025-07-03 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
[What is he going to do, admit to it? How could he even spin that into something understandable, something justifiable?

... nothing comes to him. He turns his eyes elsewhere.]

That's not anything you need to worry about, [he says, voice low but not entirely forceful. He can at least try to appeal to the young man's sympathy for emotionally difficult topics; it seems a better option than reacting as if angry. Whether it will succeed is another thing.]
laserguy: (no i can't see)

[personal profile] laserguy 2025-07-13 05:48 pm (UTC)(link)
[He's being closed off.

Scott's mouth tugs into a small frown. It helps that Altius is still being relatively patient with him, not just snapping at him, although in a way it's working against the older man-- because he wants to continue trying. At least for a while longer. Altius said that it's nothing for him to worry about, but clearly, this is something important.]

It may not have anything to do with me, but it's been on your mind. I want to listen.
chimericalclaw: (a: wrong)

[personal profile] chimericalclaw 2025-07-13 06:35 pm (UTC)(link)
[A weak huff leaves him, but his expression only darkens. Funny, that Scott doesn't think it has to do with him, that it doesn't have to do with everyone he's ever interacted with here. That it hasn't practically defined his existence.]

There are some things better left unspoken. ... It wouldn't do either of us any good.

[His misplaced regret won't help anything. Even if he did let go of his reputation entirely, was willing to throw away everything he's built here, how would knowing help Scott? Let him guess and worry. It's better than the truth.

There's a stark difference between this and how he bluntly admitted to thinking about death, before. But he could talk around that one.]
laserguy: (go somewhere)

[personal profile] laserguy 2025-07-15 12:43 pm (UTC)(link)
It sounds like it might do you some good, since it's clearly been on your mind.

[He doesn't buy it. Besides, it's clearly affecting Altius even now and something like that would only fester and in a place like this? None of them needs that. Any secret can easily be taken advantage of. If they can at least address it in some manner now, wouldn't that be for the best?

Even if Altius doesn't like it at all. Scott will just be as equally stubborn, he's really good at that now. More so when he thinks it might affect his friends-- the people that he cares about.]
chimericalclaw: (a: unpleasant)

[personal profile] chimericalclaw 2025-07-15 06:56 pm (UTC)(link)
[He feels a headache building behind his eyes again, and it comes through in the pained pinch to his brow before he brings a shaky hand over his face.]

Leave it, Scott. It's not something that can be improved...

[There's not as much energy in his voice as he'd like to put into it, but even in that case it still would have been more tense rather than anything angry. His thoughts are still sluggish, unable to come up with anything other than refusal. This damn sickness...]
laserguy: (high school cool guy)

[personal profile] laserguy 2025-07-17 11:42 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe not, but weren't you the one that told me not to keep shit in?

[Confront all that trauma. Of course he still remembers the time when Altius dug right into him after the incident with Kotone, nearly forcing him to admit a bunch of things that are still hard to think about, but in the end, it really did help. This isn't the exact same thing, but he's stubbornly going to compare their situations, hoping that it might push the older man to actually talk.

Of course, letting him rest is probably important too, but.]
chimericalclaw: (a: pathetic)

[personal profile] chimericalclaw 2025-07-17 07:02 pm (UTC)(link)
[So he did. And so he's likely to continue encouraging that sort of thing, even knowing he'll never truly reciprocate. The reminder grates at his nerves as he tries to reach for some idea of how to get the young man to leave—or at least stop asking.

The words that come to him aren't as well-considered as his replies usually are. He follows them in the hope of reaching a quiet destination regardless.]

... hypocrite, [he rasps.] That's all I am...
laserguy: (look i know i'm an ass)

[personal profile] laserguy 2025-07-22 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
[.....]

So, you're really going to refuse talking about this.

[He won't forget what happened here. Not that Scott finds himself fully closing off from the older man, but he definitely squares himself-- his jaw clenched to hide his hurt? Disappointment? Maybe if he comes back later he'll be more amendable to talking, but he's not holding his breath either.]
chimericalclaw: (a: difficulty)

[personal profile] chimericalclaw 2025-07-22 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
... Fine. You want to know the truth?

[The breath he takes in forces a tremble through his upper half, eyes still shielded.]

For all I go on about protecting people your age from violence... that shot he took... was meant for me.

[Is it a planned diversion away from his lies, or is it real guilt, real regret? Zekarion doesn't know anymore, having lost sight of what the true him is even like a long time ago. He all but hisses through his teeth.]

No words will ever change that.
laserguy: (so that was you)

[personal profile] laserguy 2025-07-27 02:47 pm (UTC)(link)
[He pushes back the initial shock of Altius actually opening up, mouth clamping shut so he can listen to him. Waiting, watching his reactions, how the older man actually seems to tremble from remembering all this. Recalling memories that have been pushed to the back of your mind isn't easy. He should know.

So, is that what this is all about? Ferran took the bullet that was meant for him? He can see why he'd be burdened with a large amount of guilt over that, but what does that have to do with 'everything was a lie.' Something isn't adding up, but Scott pushes that feeling away for the time being. It's clear that Altius is still genuinely upset about this.]

...He protected you from the bullet? [The question's asked softly.]
chimericalclaw: (a: pathetic)

[personal profile] chimericalclaw 2025-07-27 03:02 pm (UTC)(link)
He jumped in front of it.

[His tone is bitter; he doesn't try to imply anything other than the fact that he absolutely detests that.]

He should have known better...

[He's not worth it. Ferran was well aware of that, and yet—]
laserguy: (look i know i'm an ass)

[personal profile] laserguy 2025-07-31 06:53 pm (UTC)(link)
[...So a little more than just protecting. Intentionally throwing himself in danger-- sacrificing himself, ultimately, so that Altius wouldn't get hurt. He doesn't really fully blame Ferran; it's probably something he'd do for someone that he cares about. He'd probably do the same for Altius honestly.]

He wanted to protect someone that's important to him. I get it.
chimericalclaw: (o: crawl)

[personal profile] chimericalclaw 2025-08-01 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
[Finally:]

It's not worth it.

[He's not worth that: the injuries that could have very well killed his ward if they was a few inches in some other direction. Ferran even knew he could heal himself, and yet he deliberately put himself there. So, in his impaired state of mind, he must have been desperate to remind the young man of who exactly he was.

Why does it still bother him...]
laserguy: (how did you know)

[personal profile] laserguy 2025-08-04 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
...Apparently Ferran thought it was worth it. You can't decide that for others, Altius.

[Even harder to change their minds. He should know. No matter how much Kotone thinks that he shouldn't sacrifice himself for her, he will. Without question. Granted, he's trying to avoid sacrificing in general on both their ends, because he's trying to make a point to her, but no matter how 'doomed' someone maybe be or whatever else...

Sometimes it doesn't matter.]
chimericalclaw: (a: difficulty)

[personal profile] chimericalclaw 2025-08-05 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
I can tell him he was wrong, [he all but growls.

And in all honesty, he could probably decide for Ferran, order him to never do such a thing again, reduce him to nothing more than a puppet meant to take the power from his friends, as Zekarion had originally planned.

Somehow the idea feels even worse than what his ward did on his own. He lets out an vocal, aggravated exhale as he tries to cast those feelings off.]
laserguy: (we're seeing him again)

[personal profile] laserguy 2025-08-10 02:52 pm (UTC)(link)
He won't listen.

[Has he heard Altius growl like that before? Something so emotional and visceral that almost doesn't suit the businessman. Almost is the keyword though, because... they're all emotional assholes in the end, huh? It also makes him remember their first ever encounter here... when the older man was being blunt and a bit sketchy. It feels like ages ago, but Scott really hasn't forgotten that.]

Speaking as a stubborn ass teenager like Ferran.
chimericalclaw: (a: wrong)

[personal profile] chimericalclaw 2025-08-10 05:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Just as you've refused to leave me be, [he replies, far from pleased to agree.

He's reached the end of that train of thought, unsure if there was ultimately any point to it. He's too tired now to come up with anything else or to argue further in any real way, hand still resting over his face like he simply doesn't have the energy to remove it.

But he will make Ferran listen, whenever he returns. He won't allow a repeat of that.

(As long as he gets back in time. If he can only trust what all the others have said about their return...)]
laserguy: (so you're a loser too)

[personal profile] laserguy 2025-08-17 08:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, pretty much.

[He's not going to deny it. How helpful this whole conversation has been he doesn't know, but Scott's still going to stubbornly sit by his side for a while. Maybe not pester him too much, since Altius really looks exhausted, but juts making sure that the older man knows that there's someone that cares about him here too, even if he doesn't want it.]
chimericalclaw: (a: habits)

[personal profile] chimericalclaw 2025-08-17 10:04 pm (UTC)(link)
[It wouldn't last, if he ever really knew the reason behind Altius's words for his ward.

That much he's sure of. As stubborn as Scott is at this moment, he's more dedicated to supporting others, to doing the right thing, than he ever would be to Altius. Even if he's still young and working through what it means to lead and to fight for what he believes in, he's a pillar in his own right. Unlike Ferran, he wouldn't break under the weight of the man's lies and then beg for more.

Zekarion doesn't take it as a comfort, exactly, but the thought puts something over the raw edges. It reminds him that he's right in this—that anyone would be fool to reach out to someone who's done what he's done, that the only reason Scott has stayed by him is because he's orchestrated that, deliberately worked to paint himself in a sympathetic light.

It's enough to let the unpleasant throb of guilt ebb away, strangely, and fatigue sweeps into its place to start pulling him away to rest, his breaths growing more quiet. Or perhaps he's just that ill. He doesn't have many more thoughts to spare on it.]
