[training mingle] - I wanna be the very best

Who: The Chosen of Aldrip
Where: The X-mansion
What: The Chosen of Aldrip are invited to yet another training montage
Warnings: General violence. Please mark any other potential warnings on the thread titles!

At the dawn on January 5th the tents for the training grounds raise up again. However, unlike the last time the training camp does not take place in the empty fields of the outskirts but instead they are set on the property of X-Mansion. Courtesy of X-men, who have agreed to let their home to be utilized for common good.

Each tent marks a post for a different activity while ome of them work as a simplified armories. There are sets of blades (from knives to long swords), axes, armors, firearms, bows and arrows and what have you. Feel free to pick your poison, so to speak! However, Richard keeps a keen list on who borrows and what, marking down immediately if something goes missing. So! be sure to return what you take unless you want him to come after you. And just like the always, the chosen are more than welcomed to use their own weapons.

And if the Chosen gets tired of running around in the cold and snow they can go and grab lunch at the mansion's kitchen/dining area! This time it is provided by the inn which, yes, means there's different kind of poultry dishes are being served. As for the dessert there is hot chocolate with whipped cream and marshmallows available for the chosen.

For those who seek out more challenge and advanced training methods they are given access to Danger Room, a holographic combat simulator tucked deep down in one of the basements. In case someone needs help with setting up a perfect training scenario for their needs Morph is there to answer any questions.

The activities include:

Archery (instructor: Richard)
Horseback riding (instructor: Richard)
Swords (instructors: a2, Mitsuru Kirijo)
Magic + Superpower guidance(instructors: Morrigan, Fauna)
Firearms (instructors: Caitlyn, Levi)

[ooc: There is going to be a top-level for each activity/category. But feel free to make your own wildcard options outside of them, too. o/]

I hesitated, more than once. Took longer to aim than I would have in the past. Missed shots. And it took multiple shots to take down several of the targets.

[SHE HAS A LIST... all things that are reasonable for anyone, but it feels almost like failure to her. Caitlyn sighs, rubbing her singular blue eye, then pinching the bridge of her nose.

No one expected her to bounce back immediately, even at home. But Caitlyn is stubborn, and wants to push herself to return to her previous abilities.]

You're...not wrong, though. I am my own worst critic. [Comes from years of high expectations put on her!!!]

[Just outright admitting he's skimmed over network chatter about recent injures would be... potentially rude at best—but even if he wasn't aware, her apparent perfectionist lean would imply an injury rather than some other voluntary hiatus to him. But that would just be an assumption, equally rude.

He tilts his head slightly.]

It doesn't seem your awareness of your skills has dulled. How long ago was this "past," exactly?

[Caitlyn wouldn't expect him to know. He sees the eyepatch, no doubt, but doesn't know of the newness of it. Doesn't know how merely a month ago, it didn't rest on her face when she walked around Aldrip.

She gestures to it absently, forcing her shoulders to relax as she sighs.]

Almost three months? Maybe. Time is... confusing, when you leave this place, go home for nearly a year, then return again.

[Altius turns his expression through what he considers the appropriate course—a brief eyebrow raise of surprise when she indicates the patch, then concern, followed after a moment by a mild frown that's more polite than outright exasperation.]

Only three? [He doesn't think she should be in bed or anything, but expecting the same level of expertise of herself as before...]

It takes longer than that for the brain to fully adjust to a change in perception... even without whatever this place does to our memories.

[He speaks with some authority; he's not a doctor, but he works in the field and knows enough to understand what questions to ask.]

I know.

[And yet, here Caitlyn is, being hard on herself anyway. She's just Like That.]

The healers back home told me it could be six months, maybe even a year or more. But I can't wait that long. This place is too dangerous. I can't-- I won't be able to sit back when something inevitably happen. I have to be ready.

[As if that was the only reason. She's too stubborn to sit back and not push herself, even if she was still home. But the danger of this place does linger on her mind. She has loved ones here she has to protect. She can't lose them again.]

[Altius takes in her words very seriously, his attention clearly on her as he brings a hand to his chin as he considers. He lets a slow breath out of his nose in a show of that, turning over what he wants to say and how he wants to say it.]

I do admire your dedication, [he begins.] And you're right that it's dangerous here, and we'll inevitably have to worry about our safety.

[She probably suspects there's a but coming by now, and he's not going to prove that wrong.]

There's only so much we're mentally and physically capable of, Ms. Kiramman. I think it's important to strive for improvement as long as we're capable, but there comes a point where... unrealistic expectations are more of a detriment than a help.

[Ask him how he knows—or don't, because it's unlikely for anyone to get a real answer out of him about that.]

Accepting your limits allows you to better prepare, I think. If you recognize where you can and can't change, you can direct your efforts towards methods with better results—like asking for help to cover for those limits.

[Perhaps it sounds too much like a lecture, but he's trying to turn his tone towards something more like tentative advice—and anyway, it's become almost second nature for him to try to guide others, especially younger sorts, so he's not about to let Caitlyn's statements pass without proper comment.]
