[As Aether was finally close to reaching one of the terminals, he was attacked by creatures made of shadows. That was nothing unexpected to him. He was an experienced warrior, after all, and he'd dealt with all kinds of enemies in the past. His sword easily tore down the monsters and all seemed to go silent.
Just for a moment, at least.
The traveler quickly sensed that something was wrong with him. He fell to his knees, biting down a pained cry and tearing his glove away. Black markings were spreading from his hands up, like an infection. Aether's eyes widened, before a wave of sharp pain clouded his vision.]
---
[When Yu encounters Aether, it's far from the terminal's location. The blonde is clutching his head with one hand, while the other is holding the sword out, dragging it on the ground like it's too heavy for him to lift. He has no gloves, so it's easy to see the marks spreading all up his arms. His form is bend forward and he's taking deep breathes, fighting to keep himself in check. He doesn't realize he's not alone anymore.]
[The city is oddly calm, considering the chaos that's overtaken it. Glitches and portals, terminals and shadow creatures...
To be honest, Yu isn't sure he's ready to deal with any of it. It draws him right back to the tower, to hands around his throat, to the relentless climb and the test of endurance that turned out to be almost, almost too much for him. He stays behind. For once in his life, he stays behind, and even though he reasons that someone has to protect people if something happens in town, he knows that's not the whole reason.
The blonde's presence catches him by surprise as he's examining the portal in Aldrip.]
Aether...?
[His breath catches at the sight of the marks, at the clear struggle in his stance.]
[He's unaware of anything that is happening around him, as pain runs through his body and mind. Yu's voice reaches him eventually, but Aether doesn't look up. He doesn't recognize the other and words spoken to him seem to have no meaning anymore.]
Leave... Leave me alone.
[He struggles to speak, but this is important. Whoever is next to him needs to go. This problem is only for Aether to solve, like he always does.
He grits his teeth, letting a pained sound as the markings spread further up his arms. The grip on his sword tightens as well, as if he was getting ready to fight something.]
Go away!
[Maybe those words aren't actually directed at Yu, but at the chaos in Aether's own mind.]
[Because unfortunately, Yu is the type to stick around. He sees things through and holds out til the bitter end -- it's just who he is. And when it's a friend? Of course he can't leave Aether like this. Besides--]
Aether... I've seen this before. [Yu chances a few steps closer, quietly calling a physically resistant Persona to the front of his mind as he does. Aether doesn't seem like the type of person who wants to hurt others, but it's better to be safe than sorry. He leans forward to put a hand on Aether's shoulder.]
[He isn't listening. Words make no sense to him, his vision is distorted. He doesn't know what is happening to him. He only knows that whatever it is, it's trying to mess with his brain and hurt him. After all it started when he fought those strange monsters.
He suddenly feels a hand pressed to his shoulder and it makes him gasp, then sharply pull away. His grip tightens further on his sword and he stabs forward.]
I said go away!
[But maybe somehow he knows that whoever he's "fighting" is not a treat to him, because he doesn't seem to aim at Yu. The sword stabs the air as if in a warning. Aether is breathing in and out heavily, clearly struggling. His hand shakes.]
[Yu isn't taking this threat as seriously as he probably should. There are reasons for that, of course: Aether doesn't even seem to be trying to hit him. Barring that, Rangda could do a good job of protecting him from most threats...physical ones, at least. He does take a quick step back; the sword slashes at air, only managing to graze the end of his shirt as he moves.]
I don't want to leave you like this.
[He's trying his best to keep calm, at the moment; when he was affected by something like this, any little slight set him off. He sure does wish one of his Personas could cause sleep, right about now...but lacking that, he summons Trumpeter to cast Debilitate. It doesn't do much, to be honest, but it'll lower Aether's attack and his hit rate a little bit.]
[The words still don't reach him, melting with the noise inside his head. Aether takes a deep breath in and out as he retrieves his trembling hand with a sword. It doesn't help that soon afterwards there's something cast on him and even if the effects are not that big, it still registers in his brain as some sort of attack.
And it sets him off.
Even if he won't strike as powerfully as he could before and he may not even land the hit anyway, he's fast. He's by Yu's side in a matter of seconds and his sword this time stabs downwards, right by Yu's feet.]
[In hindsight, that might not have been the smartest idea. In hindsight, Yu realizes that equipping Trumpeter also removes his resistance to the attack now coming at him, alarmingly fast.]
Nngh...!
[He dodges, but not fast enough; Aether's sword swipes his leg, leaving a shallow gash. But it's not really a normal place to aim for, is it? Maybe it's wishful thinking, but Yu can't help wondering if Aether is holding back in some way, if he's trying intentionally not to deliver any mortal blows.
Cursing himself for not having a single ailment spell, he elects to try to catch him by surprise instead. Trumpeter reappears as he casts a powerful electric spell: lightning arcs down to the ground just between the two of them. Hopefully it'll force Aether back a bit.]
[Yu is right. Aether doesn't want to hurt him more than it's necessary. He wants to make sure Yu retreats and can't pursue him, hence aiming at the leg.
The moment the electric spell is lunched, he jumps back, making sure there's good distance between them. His movement is far from graceful though, as he seems to lean a bit too much backwards, before returning to his combat stance. His gaze falls on the blade of his sword and his eyes widen when he sees the traces of blood left on it. His hand trembles only more and for the moment, he seems to forget about everything else going on. He only stares at the red.
Then his earrings and the emblem on his torso start glowing with the shade of teal as wind infused with elemental energy forms beneath his feet. It lifts Aether up in the air then he spins and sends a gust of wind right in Yu's direction.]
Leave!
[If the other doesn't want to go, then Aether will make him.]
[There's a lot happening, here -- a lot to analyze, a lot of factors in place. Yu is very keenly aware that he doesn't have any skills that cause sleep or things like that, and not for the first time, he wishes that could be different. Me patra didn't have any effect on this condition, last time he encountered it...would it be worth trying again?
In the end, what's worth it doesn't really matter; Aether is queuing up another spell, and Yu barely has time to identify what it is before it's coming at him--]
Wait!
[He draws Atropos to the front of his mind, relying on her ability to block damage from the wind; it doesn't cut him the way it might otherwise, but it still knocks him back. Way back, sweeping him off his feet and throwing him some distance away. He lands on the ground with a dull thud, rolling a few times before he finally comes to a stop.]
[As his feet touch the ground again, Aether stumbles, the corruption spreading only further up his arms making him wince in pain. Deep breathes. He can't lose this battle.
Aether looks towards Yu. The gust of wind already vanished, but managed to fulfil its purpose. There's a lot of distance between them now and Yu seems to be lying motionless on the ground. Normally, this kind of view would make Aether rush to the other in panic. Right now this kind of act is beyond him. Aether is focused on getting away, making sure nobody can get close.
Slowly, he turns away and begins to walk. He isn't sure where he's going. Somewhere, where no one can find him would be good enough. He needs to solve the problem on his own. He can do it.
[It feels like ages before he's able to move again; in reality, it's seconds that tick by, instead of minutes, but his body is sluggish even when he regains his senses.
Pushing up with his hands, he tries to reorient himself. He's not too far from where he started, though he's sore enough that he's not sure he's ready to move just yet...and then, with a start, he realizes Aether is gone. Sucking in a sharp breath, he pulls himself to his feet, breathing heavily.]
