[ In retrospect, there are a lot of things that probably could have gone better.
But it's not the worst situation, frankly. Yeah, sure, him and Charles probably would have been a smear on the walls of Ketsora if Jinx and Bakugo hadn't rolled up to the party, but they're past (well, on top of) those supposedly-impenetrable walls now and nobody's too terribly injured. Uh...alright, maybe his back has seen better days, but the adrenaline and his healing factor are already taking care of it. That's his story and he's sticking to it (what, don't believe him? ...yeah.)
Peter lands next to Gwen and the other Peter with a little bit of a skidding motion, sure that he looks a mess - but his hand reaches out to grab Gwen's shoulder, squeezing firmly. ] Come on, both of you! We have to get you to the terminal!
[ Gwen, the fastest out of the three of them, has the package - if anyone was going to make it, it'd be her. There's still some smoke cover from Jinx's explosions, but the wind is shifting and as soon as it does - the guards will be on them again in a heartbeat. Peter shifts, ready to use himself as a not-quite-human shield (it is, after all, what he's best at), one hand on her shoulder to stick close as he follows behind Gwen to cover her. ]
(oh, smoke is bad, smoke is so bad on super-sensitive noses. the mask helps, thankfully, but it is enough to overstimulate, his head a little light from it, but nothing that can't be moved past or overcome, along with the injuries that came along their previous fight - he'll live, all of them always do.
after all, peter is right. they'll have time to lick their wounds and heal once they're all home, once it's all over with. trusting the other peter with the most important person to him is just like trusting himself, it means he can shoot a web upwards and have a higher ground view, and the moment he hits it, he feels the hairs on the back of his neck stand. perhaps the smoke might delay them, it might give him just enough time to plan this. he tries to land as silenntly as possible, a finger in front of where his mouth is behind the mask as to ask for silence.)
Guards. I'm-- I'm gonna stay, delay them, and you guys go, and I'll meet you on your way out, yeah?
[There isn't many people Gwen trusts more than a Peter, and she's blessed to have not one, but two standing with her.
The newer of the two stands beside her, hand on her shoulder, pushing them forward, but she isn't budging for the gate until her Peter drops back down.]
-- What? No. No-- we have to stick together. Anyway, it's your suit-- if anyone, it should be you going in. I'll be the one to stay behind and hold them off.
[She knows she's going to be talking on deaf ears. Peters are stubborn. God, they're so damn stubborn. She knows once he's made up his mind, there would be no changing it, but she does not like this plan. Even if she volunteered to stay behind too, that doesn't mean she likes the idea of splitting up.]
[ Peter echoes Gwen at almost the exact same time, head whipping around to find the other Peter - even without moving lenses, his confusion and bewilderment is evident. Gwen's not budging, but Peter rocks to a stop too, hand still lingering on her shoulder. The other gestures, reaching out towards the other Peter as if to pull him along, too. ]
We can make it! All of us we just - we have to go now.
[ He tries to sound confident about it, but the shouting is getting louder, shapes moving in the smoke. The longer they stand there arguing about it, the closer their enemies are getting. ]
If anyone's staying it should be me. [ Peter tugs at Gwen again, who's still not budging, anxiously looking towards the smoke - his senses are starting to tingle again, that ever-present thrum of danger getting louder and LOUDER - ] You both have a better grasp on the mission. But we can make it -
Guys, we don't have time to argue this, okay? Like, zero time.
(and yet, being a long-winded talker, it's not like he can stop himself from being so even when danger is knocking on their door. he can hear the steps, smell the metal on the armory, and it approaches faster than he wishes it to.)
Yeah, but I got more tech, so I can definitely deal with all of them faster. Listen, okay, it's fine, I've fought aliens, remember? This is fine. Gwen, you can totally make it work with the suit, you saw how it worked, and Peter, not that like, she needs the protection, and any of that, because you know, she's Spider-Woman and all that, and she has kicked my ass a bunch, but you got the most important person in the world to me, okay? You gotta have her back at all times, okay? We gotta go.
[Gwen can be stubborn too. It doesn't matter that one Peter is trying to tug her to the portal, when her boyfriend has all of her attention.
It would be easy to throw in a quip about how the suit has failed him in the past, but he is right-- him, with that suit is the best at dealing with the situation. She doesn't have to like it though.
Her own spider-sense is screaming danger in her ear, and yet, all she can focus on is the lump in her throat at Peter's words. Why did that feel so much like a goodbye? This wasn't a goodbye. Absolutely not.]
And I'll kick your ass again, if you do something stupid. [She steps close to him, putting her forehead against his and closing her eyes for the briefest of moments. It's only half a second, but for that half a second, all she can hear is his heart and that's her world.]
Meet us at the terminal as soon as you can, okay? I love you. [She doesn't want to let him go, but he's right. He's got this, and she's got the terminal. So she forces herself to spin around and grab the other Peter's arm to start making their run on the portal. It was now or never.]
[ Peter doesn't find the other Peter's argument very compelling, but the ability to argue the point is rapidly disintegrating before his eyes. They have no time, and the one thing they can both agree on is that they're not letting Gwen go through that portal alone. That's what gets Peter to shut up, even if everything in his body is telling him not to let the other Peter do this. That they can all make it out, that this self-sacrifical bullshit is unnecessary (unless he's the one doing it, obviously, God they really are the same, aren't they? But no one will miss Peter, they will miss this Peter.
Peter lets Gwen go, stands off to the side as they have their moment. He wishes he was strong enough to look away, but he remembers - he remembers moments like that, himself. It feels cowardly to pretend it's not happening right in front of him. ]
Seriously, don't do anything stupid. [ Peter steps forward to punch his other self in the arm, a friendly gesture, and then Gwen - ever the strong one, stronger than any of them Peter's sure - is the one to prod him towards their final destination. He looks back once, nodding minutely to the other Peter - he knows he must see it. The silent promise that - of course he'd protect her. Whether she wanted him to or not - of course he'd look out for her. As long as the other Peter did his part and showed up - it'd be fine. Everything was going to be fine.
Another explosion goes off somewhere - things are getting dicey, and they run for the portal. A big, white void - no danger hums from it, but that's unsettling in its own way. Peter cuts a glance over to Gwen, turning his hand against her arm to grip her forearm back. ] He'll be right behind us. Ready?
