[ So, here they are. It was a bit of a rush job that landed them here, but they've assembled a team here outside of the caves nonetheless. Miller is geared up in his armor, pacing in front of the entrance with his sighted volt driver in one hand and the telemeter in the other. ]
Alright, gentlemen. We don't have time to waste, so let's make our assignment clear. I'm sure I don't need to explain that this all hinges on there being a terminal at the end of this signal.
So long as that proves to be true, Fandaniel will be interfacing with it and creating our backup. It's up to the rest of us to make sure he and the rest of us get there in one piece. Silco, Marco, we will rely on your help for navigation. Levi, you will assist me in keeping watch. Keep the formation tight. No stragglers! There's no telling what obstacles we may encounter as we get closer to the signal, so we can't have anyone getting lost. I'll be in touch with logistics.
[ It is at this point he steps forward to place the telemeter in Fandaniel's hands with a deliberate gaze before returning his attention to everyone else. ]
[Fandaniel eyes the mouth of the cave as Miller speaks, the other man's words a distant, background drone. He could, he thinks, reach the terminal alone. As an Ascian he could cloak his presence and he suspects his sorcery could deal with any creatures lurking in the labyrinthine tunnels... But a traveling party is more fun. It's always worth having a few bodies around to trigger any unexpected traps... and he'll have his own captive audience!
He's knocked from his thoughts when Miller places the telemeter in his gloved hands, causing him to square his shoulders as if snapping to attention.]
No questions at all! You were as clear as a fresh spring on a summer morning.
[What had Miller said again? ...eh.
Fandaniel flourishes an arm in the direction of the cave and pops one hip out like a dancer.]
If my dearest bodyguards are prepared to guard my body then let's be off, shall we?
[A small, box-like robot swerves out from under his robe and beeps. Its screen lights up with cheerful text.
[ As one drama queen to another, like recognizes like. At least someone in this merry band of brothers has a sense of humor, he can't carry all the joke quota on his own shoulders! Marco throws his arms up overdramatically, the very picture of indignant protest. ]
Whoa whoa whoa, let's get one thing clear, I'm no one's bodyguard mmkay? The second I sense danger, I'm ducking my cute fluffy butt behind one of you big tall strong manly men.
Also, if that robot pal of yours doesn't project a hologram of a princess telling us we're her only hope, I'm gonna be super disappointed.
[ You might say Miller is already entering this arrangement with some hesitation in regards to Fandaniel. While he hasn't determined yet if his theatrical behavior is a harmless quirk or not, it is if nothing else, fully out of alignment with how seriously he's taking this mission. Consequently, Miller narrows his eyes at the hint he is not paying attention, and the sweet talking is not helping.
But then that robot comes forth and interrupts whatever inclination he might have had to speak up about it. Not to mention addition number two to the not taking this seriously brigade. ]
Enough. This is a team effort. I will be on high alert, but I expect everyone to pull their weight. Turning tail is out of the question.
[ Not that he can do much about it if it comes down to it... so he won't lollygag about waiting for a better response. Flicking on the light on his railgun, he accepts the proposition to get going and starts heading inside. ]
[Fandaniel stoops forward, folds his hands across his lips, and turns to Marco with wide eyes.]
Oooh...
[He says in a loud stage whisper.]
We made him maaaad...
[For a long moment he holds the pose then scoots after Miller.]
Worry not, sir!
I assure you I am a team player, sir!
I shall give this endeavor my utmost attention and effort, this I promise!
[Despite his playful, teasing lilt, he means it. Backing up and resetting the AI is important to him, so he can have the death he wants and preserve the system for future study.]
[ Honestly, Marco nearly hadn't shown up to this little adventuring party. He doesn't particularly like the AI, and he sure as hell doesn't want to risk his own neck for what he still thinks of as their jailer. It had been incredibly tempting to just let everyone else fight the good fight while he takes advantage of the chaos to steal as much food as he can and party like it's his last night on earth, which it very well might be if this back-up plan goes to shit like he suspects it inevitably will. The only thing that'd gotten him begrudgingly off his ass had been the thought of his friends back home and how utterly disappointed they'd be in him for not playing the good little hero.
That, and he doesn't trust anything he can't verify with his own eyes and ears. Whatever goes down, he wants to see it firsthand instead of hearing some biased recollection.
So here he is, barefoot in the mud, shivering in a thin t-shirt and too tight bike shorts. He casts a wary glance at all the gear and weaponry people are holding, making mental notes of what he can avoid or disarm if things go south. With his history, he can't help feeling a little apprehensive around military and firearms - though that still doesn't stop him from giving Miller a sarcastic salute. ]
Sir, yes sir. [ The words are drawled out sardonically with all the disenchantment of a teenager with a massive problem with authority. Still, Marco's well aware he's not a leader, and Miller seems to know what he's doing, so he can't help reluctantly gravitate towards him anyway. ] I can give you flight and echolocation, or I can give you fangs and scent tracking, but not both at once unless I suddenly get hit with the most convenient of all glitches. Which works better for you?
[ To be honest, it was a risk inviting a second stranger to their scouting party. Especially one who seemingly has more incomprehensible mutant powers(?). But, as it turns out, the situation is quite dire, and if anyone is going to act out of turn, it might be better to have them close by than otherwise so long as they're volunteering to come along. So that's what Miller's come down to... although he is starting to feel his doubts reemerging as he listens to Fandaniel's dramatics and Marco's teenage sarcasm right out of the gate.
But for the time being, he's going to try to stay productive—though the steely frown doesn't budge from his face. ]
Correct me if I'm wrong, [ he says while glancing to Silco and Levi ] but in my experience, most creatures that would call this place their home do quite well at blending in. Flight and echolocation sound like useful skills to have here—but when you say you can "give me" those...
[In contrast to Marco's sarcastic tone Levi is completely serious. Exploring a cave system was new (well, he'd done some on his own before) but a mission was a mission and he would treat it like any other.]
I'm ready as soon as you give the word to move out.
[This was an important and probably dangerous mission, so Levi's come prepared. The only obvious weapon he has is the rifle in his hands but he's also carrying a satchel with some supplies in it. His eyes are pink, which may or may not stand out to anyone besides Silco as odd. As the group arrives and prepares he stands at attention, waiting for the others to be ready to move out. He doesn't seek out conversation but won't be adverse to it. He's just not good at talking.
He does wander off for a bit at one point, when he spots one of the rat creatures that reside in the cave. Its arguably a monster, but he leaves his gun down and instead....speaks to it?]
