IT'S A BEAUTIFUL DAY
March 11. The sun is shining, streaming in perfect sunbeams through uncovered windows. Birds and animals twitter outside, basking in trees that are verdant green and full of life. Outside, the town begins to wake, stirring to life with the sounds of ordinary everyday happenings. Footsteps, carts rolling down the road, the distant sound of friendly neighbors greeting each other.

And you–you have lived here your whole life. Or maybe you’re a visitor to this fine town. Either way, you’re a neighbor here, too.

Aldrip is having another beautiful day.
i. OUR TOWN

The town square is a bustling place to be for locals, and this week is no exception. Aldrip is a vibrant swell of activity: stores, stalls, and stands all open their doors precisely on time, welcoming the new day. Things are quiet, theoretically, while the local school is in session, but anyone playing hooky won’t get a second glance. Everything is fine! It’s too nice a day to be inside, anyway.

(Just like all the other days before, all too nice to waste.)

That being said, Aldrip is not without its own brand of nuisance. Fairies are rarely seen in town, these days, but this week, they seem to be in fine form. They can be found playing harmless tricks on people: taking things from them and moving them somewhere else, rolling carts when no one is holding onto them, mostly-unscrewing screws that hold together mechanical parts… They avoid magical pranks, for now, but these mundane tricks are such a nuisance! They even pull all of the wares out of a local vendor’s stall: dozens and dozens of colorful, patterned scarves. They had been on “deep discount,” leftovers from some “Day of Devotion” event, but the discount is about to get even deeper, on account of how dirty they are.
ii. TEMPTING FATE

A recent expedition to the Lorentia Caves uncovered a hidden gem–literally. Enterprising rock enthusiasts have brought back wheelbarrows full of round geodes, and have made a game out of cracking them open. Geodes that are green inside will get a lavish prize: a stay at a local spa or a gift card to a fancy restaurant. Purple or red inside will get a free drink at the local coffee shop, or a small gift card to use at a local shop. Brown or clear gems get nothing special–but you get to keep the rocks! They hold no special properties, but can be nice to look at and make great paper weights, and some of them almost seem to

Anyway.

No one quite knows where the pop-up casino came from, but it’s doing a bustling business at night. Now, this establishment is small, nowhere near the size of the one in the past, and is not nearly as expansive. Nonetheless, it helps create a thriving nightlife in town: there’s games, drinking, dancing, and all sorts of fun. Locals are encouraged to participate either by attending or working, or even performing in some way!

It’s a beautiful day in Aldrip. Just like yesterday. Just like tomorrow. Just like every day s̴h̵o̸u̶l̵d̸ ̶b̸e̵.
iii. LOST AND FOUND

You wake in a maze surrounded by fog. You have no memory of entering the maze. You have no idea which direction you might have come from. You are simply here, and there seems to be no exit above. So. The only way is forward.

You may be alone, or have company. Either way, aside from you and any other characters you may find, the maze seems empty. Without end. Without purpose.

Whatever twists and turns you take, all will eventually find themselves in the center, in their own time. There is nothing here, either, except for an overwhelming sense of aloneness. There is nothing here. There is nothing there.

There is nothing–

...

You wake up.

It’s another beautiful day in Aldrip.

Like all the days before and all the days after, your morning proceeds apace. You start your morning, you say hello to friends and neighbors. You…

… you find something unusual in an area you frequent. An item. It’s small, and somehow, it’s something you think you should know. Some will feel compelled to pick these items up. Some will feel a deep sense of unease when looking at them, and refuse to interact. Turning your back on these items will cause them to disappear. You won’t have to worry about that anymore. Not on this beautiful day.

Picking up the items causes a rush of information to flood your mind. Something like a memory plays in your head: the person in this memory looks and sounds like you. But…you don’t remember living that life, or doing those things. So how does it feel so real?

Throughout the rest of the event, these items will continue appearing. Characters are free to interact with them or ignore them as you see fit. Regaining more memories means they may regain their powers, as well, though whether they remember how to control them is another story.

These memories will feature prominently in the event poll that goes up after this, and your choice of how many memories they regain (or don’t) may have a lasting effect on your character. Not filling it out will also have an impact on them. So please make sure to fill out the poll!
iv. MISSING LINKS
As this strange memory phenomenon takes over Aldrip, other odd things begin to happen. It’s small, at first, and barely notable except that it renders Aldrip slightly less idyllic than usual. There are a few clouds in the sky. You may get caught in a passing rain shower, or maybe sleep through your alarm…

It gets worse.

The end of the month crawls ever closer, slow and steady. As it does, things begin to go missing. Small things, at first: personal possessions, the lunch left in the break room, flyers that look like maybe they were torn down in the town square. Is someone thieving? Here? In Aldrip?? You’ve never known Aldrip to have a problem with crime. Everything is so…

Pleasant.

Everyone becomes a suspect. It could have been your neighbor who took your wallet, or a coworker. Maybe your friend took that bracelet from the counter while you weren’t looking. But close to the end of the month, this starts getting bigger. What happened to that tree along the path you walk every day? Wasn’t there a butcher shop on the corner there? Where have all the birds gone?

Things go missing.

They keep going missing.

Why have they disappeared?

And…where have they gone?
v. THE COUNTDOWN
Sunday, March 31.

It’s raining.

It never rains like this in Aldrip.

Characters wake in the morning to anxiety twisting in the pit of their stomach, inexplicable and impossible to trace. As the day wears on, this sense of foreboding ramps up. Characters may even see significant numbers throughout the day that seem to count…down.

Twelve. Morning. How funny, to see these recurrences. Odd.

Eight. Seven. Around noon. This must be a coincidence, and yet, you cannot help but wonder if it is meaningful.

Four. Late afternoon. Wonder and curiosity are replaced by dread. Whatever is at the end of this countdown–it feels like a finality. Terrifying and unknown.

Two. Night. Those going to bed will find their sleep restless and filled with bad dreams.

UPDATES INSTALLED
RESTARTING…

One. Midnight. The clock strikes twelve, and whatever your character is doing–sleeping, waking, etc–the whole of existence seems to blink out.

(Info about what happens after this will be forthcoming in the event poll results and April’s SOTG.)

[ The dealer in question is one Claude von Riegan, putting on a good mask after having been repeatedly discomfited by the events of the last couple of days. Something is brewing underneath the surface of their simple little town. Something bad. It's had all the little hairs on the back of his neck standing up all day long, buffeted from a missing tree he used to read under to a strange vision more vivid than ever before.

But right now, he's at work. And at work, it's his job to pretend like nothing is wrong so that they can momentarily convince their customers that that's truly the case. ]

A lot of people have been having off days, [ he says carefully, watching the young man's expression shift and change. He makes a show of glancing around the room, then at the door. ] Penny for your thoughts? It's a slow night anyway.

[personal profile] izanagis 2024-03-17 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
[Another dealer might chalk it up to inexperience; his expression is fairly opaque, but there's no hiding the fact that he's too young to have been playing for a long time. Nonetheless, Yu is grateful that Claude doesn't dismiss him from the table outright, or anything like that. For the moment, he's content just to brush things off -- the moment rattled him, for sure, but he can make a quick recovery. All the same...he pauses at Claude's question.

The consideration in his tone... he has to wonder if the man has his own share of concerns.]

Felt like a slow day, too, [he says with a breathy chuckle. With some thought, he reconsiders his first instinct to brush off the question. He sort of feels crazy...but maybe it'd help to say something out loud.]

... I keep remembering strange dreams, recently. [They must be dreams...right?] Guess you could call it deja vu, in a way.
feintofhart: ([ mid phase ] profile)

[personal profile] feintofhart 2024-03-17 08:21 am (UTC)(link)
Deja vu... that's one way to put it.

[ Claude idly shuffles the rest of the deck with smooth, practiced motions, the quiet rustle of the card edges against each other soothingly repetitive against the music thrumming in the background. It feels as though he should keep what he's seen a secret. That he'll be judged for it, or will land himself in more trouble than he's already in.

But his sense of self-preservation is flagging when confronted by the idea of getting some answers. ]

Dreams are one thing, kid. [ Yeah, he knows damn well that Yu's not supposed to be here. He doesn't care, though. It's not like he's going to bankrupt the kid. ] But usually we don't have those while we're still awake. And you just had one. Right?

[personal profile] izanagis 2024-03-18 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
[The cards feel meaningful, in some way -- maybe not in design but in shape, in...symbolism? As if they're calling to him. Some part of himself tucked far away, calling to him wordlessly. Yu watches them as Claude shuffles, a sharp, analytic glint in his eye, like he's trying to puzzle something out. He is, of course, but he assumes he doesn't have to say anything about that.

Until he asks that question.

Yu wants to say no. Every atom of his existence screams no; people remember dreams at strange moments all the time. Nothing about this is strange. But it is. Claude's question isn't the whole reason he says anything; it's more like an arrow fired through a fracture already spiderwebbing out of control.]

Yeah, [he admits it with some reluctance, as if his voice didn't want him to say it aloud.] I thought I saw something, and when I picked it up... [The girl in green. The six-armed creature staring a hole through his very existence.] It just felt...real.

[ That's it, isn't it? That's what's happening to everyone here.

No. Not everyone. Who it seems to be happening to is striking at random, only a small handful of them affected by these visions of another life, another world, another reality. Claude has always been a voracious enough reader to allow his mind to wander on flights of fancy, and a part of him assumes that they're having visions of past lives.

But he can't verify that hunch until he knows what everyone else is seeing. The thing that keeps nagging at him is simple: the visions he's seen have nothing to do with observable history as he knows it. ]

It's happening to me too. And to others. Not everyone here -- there's a reason why I'm not shouting it from the rafters, [ he says with an arch of his brow. ] Which makes it even more important for those of us who are... suffering from this particular affliction to pool resources. [ Privately. Secretly. In a way that won't threaten their livelihoods and lifestyles here. ] What did you see?
izanagis: (031)

[personal profile] izanagis 2024-03-21 04:04 pm (UTC)(link)
[It's an interesting way to word whatever is happening here: suffering from an affliction. So, too, does it speak to Yu's feeling about the situation. Whatever is happening, he doesn't want it. It's intruding on his normal life in this pleasant little town. The things he's seen are not pretty: monsters, nightmares, fights to the death or near-death. Creatures so terrifying he doesn't want them to exist in any world.

It's no comfort to know that he's not alone in this. Instead, it makes everything feel more ominous, like something irreversible is happening.]

A girl I don't recognize, [he says, thoughtful, fingers tapping against the card in his hand.] But it was like I knew her. As if we had been friends...

[Schoolmates, in an unfamiliar place. He had been out of place, there. New. Nothing like Aldrip, filled with a feeling of belonging. He lifts his eyes again, looking at Claude.]

Is that anything like what you've seen?
feintofhart: ([ mid phase ] do what you must)

[personal profile] feintofhart 2024-03-24 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
A girl you didn't recognize, but you felt in your heart you knew...

[ Interesting. He's been prancing around, gathering others' memories and trying to make sense of them. He's not sure why he even started, to be frank. The first time he came into a memory, he had reeled away from it, terrified, ready to flee. But the more he saw, the more determined he became to get to the bottom of things, until his voracious desire for knowledge was all-consuming.

Which isn't him. Typically, he'll do anything to prevent himself from having to think too hard. But now? It's like it's awoken a beast inside him, pacing the floors and staring at the clues assembled as though things will somehow, magically, make sense. ]

Strange. And not unlike what I've seen, or what others have seen. [ He leans forward, conspiratorial. ] Some people have seen magnificent, terrible things. Others have seen... smaller things, intimate things. Like you, just now. My going theory is that they're past lives, of a sort. I can't think of any other explanation for them.

Where were you -- you and that girl? Did it look old-fashioned at all?
izanagis: (005)

[personal profile] izanagis 2024-04-03 06:13 pm (UTC)(link)
[He nods faintly. Claude sums it up fairly well...but somehow, it doesn't make him feel any better. "In your heart" ... if that's the case, shouldn't he know her? How could he have forgotten someone so completely...?

Yu is preoccupied with that line of questioning for a moment, but his focus readjusts when Claude leans in, as if he's sharing a secret.]

Past lives, [he repeats the idea with a combination of curiosity and skepticism in his voice; curious by nature describes him, for the most part, but somehow...some part of him doesn't want to believe that's true. It would make for a decent explanation, but is it really possible? Still, the rest of it...] When you say "terrible things..." things like monsters, maybe?

[The six-armed creature seems to be sticking in his mind, its name just at the tip of his tongue, but still somewhat out of reach... He shakes his head at the question, trying not to get lost in all those thoughts again.]

No. If anything, it made Aldrip look old-fashioned. Like it was years ahead of this place.
feintofhart: ([ mid phase ] oops I did it again)

[personal profile] feintofhart 2024-04-04 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
Monsters are a part of a few of them, yeah.

[ They had been but one horrifying part of the vision he'd had. Somehow, the people had seemed much more frightening, at the time. But it had all been frightening. Almost enough to make him not try to find any more memories, if not for his incorrigible sense of curiosity, and the lingering unease that has dogged his steps ever since he embarked on this difficult new career. ]

Could you have been looking into... the future, maybe? A future life? [ He rubs at his chin. ] I don't know why that feels more far-fetched than a past-life, but it does. Still, they're equally as possible, don't you think?

What sort of monsters did you see?

[ Maybe it's a warning. A premonition. Gods, the cultists might be right -- the end days are coming. ]
izanagis: (017)

[personal profile] izanagis 2024-04-06 03:29 pm (UTC)(link)
A future life? [That sounds...extraordinary. Implausible. Claude is right, in a sense -- they're both equally possible...or maybe impossible? Every fiber of his being is telling him that it couldn't be. That it was just a dream. Don't look for meaning in it.]

If that's the case, maybe I should try a career as a fortune teller.

[It's a flippant response, lacking in any meaning or association...but it makes him pause anyway. Fortune, seeing the future, a spread of cards on a table, a blue room--

"Do you believe in fortune telling?"

He exhales, trying to focus on the question at hand.]

It looked...almost human. But it had eight arms and blue skin...and a trident. [He frowns.] I didn't get the sense that it would hurt me. It was more like...a friend. Or an ally.
feintofhart: ([ mid phase ] arms crossed)

[personal profile] feintofhart 2024-04-12 10:02 am (UTC)(link)
A friend. Now, that's interesting. [ Oh, whatever. He'll stop pretending as though he's speaking of yarns others have spun. What use is it pretending that he hasn't seen the same bullshit as everyone else? He rubs at his mouth, trying to imagine such a frightful creature in his mind's eye. ]

I saw monsters too. Big, horrible things, the size of a building, wearing frightful tasseled masks. They definitely weren't friends.

[ But they were working with humans, clearly. Maybe that makes Yu the sort of person to be able to command monsters? ]

Do you recall in what context you saw that creature of yours? If it was near human, did it manage to speak?
izanagis: (005)

[personal profile] izanagis 2024-04-12 06:39 pm (UTC)(link)
The size of a building? [His eyes widen by a fraction. That's an alarming notion.] Did you see them in Aldrip...?

[Could something like that, huge and terrifying and destructive, really happen here? Are they all in danger?

The creature in his dream bore no mask, and while it looked frightful enough, he also felt...almost a feeling of kinship, looking at it. As if it reminded him of a friend. Did it say anything...? He has to think about that for a moment.]

"Thou art I," [he murmurs, uncertain, but as he says those words, his breath catches in his throat. Something in his head, longing to get out, longing to whisper more of those words-- ...a shudder runs through him, leaving him with a thoughtful frown.]

... It means something, I think. But I'm not sure what.
feintofhart: ([ mid phase ] caught out)

[personal profile] feintofhart 2024-04-16 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
No. Not in Aldrip. Someplace else -- a place I've neither seen nor heard of before. [ He shrugs. ] It makes sense, for the both of us. It would be a sorry thing if all our past lives and all our future lives were to take place in one poky little town.

[ It would be a sorry thing if he was stuck here for all of this life, he privately thinks. But something seems to sway him to remain here, keeping him grounded, stuck in the perpetuity of dissatisfaction. He doesn't know why. Thinking about it too hard gives him a headache.

He'd rather get a headache about more fascinating things, like this kid in front of him and his weird little friend. ]

But I'm more interested in this vision of yours. Thou art I, huh? [ He taps at his chin. ] It sounds very mystical. An extension of your spirit, perhaps? There are some religious beliefs, in far-off places I've only ever heard of, that our spirits exist somewhere outside of our bodies. It would make sense that they'd appear in stranger ways than we'd expect.
izanagis: (289)

[personal profile] izanagis 2024-04-18 06:24 pm (UTC)(link)
[That should be a relief. Somehow, it feels more...foreboding, like they're on the cusp of something they can never come back from.]

That's true, [his tone is thoughtful as he makes that quiet admission. And truly, there is something a little familiar in the idea; he's lived in Aldrip for most of his life, but somehow, it just feels...expected, going to different places like that. Like he should be used to it.

I am thou. His hand itches to-- to what? To call on something, to pull something into existence.]

Of the soul, maybe. [He says it with a confidence he can't source, like it only makes sense. But Claude makes an interesting point.] Maybe there's something to that. When you read about gods in myths and stories...maybe that's what they are in the first place. Aspects of humanity.

[It's a weird thought, but...it doesn't feel wrong, either. Not entirely. He huffs out a soft laugh.]

I certainly wasn't expecting them to appear in a playing card, though.
feintofhart: ([ mid phase ] look beyond)

[personal profile] feintofhart 2024-04-20 08:38 am (UTC)(link)
[ Claude frowns at Yu. The spirit and the soul seem so close that they should almost be indistinguishable from each other. He doesn't think that this kid is saying that from a place of religious zealotry, though, nor does he think that he's saying it from a place of someone who enjoys nitpicking other people's words. No, it's as though he's remembering something.

Past lives, or future lives, coming home to roost. Claude can understand that, at least partway. But what he can't understand is why, and why all at once. Are they being prepared for some great threat? Will they become these other selves, or regain those horrible memories? Or is it for no reason at all beyond some sort of magical mistake? He inspects Yu above his bridged fingers. ]

You did more than remember the image. You remember what's behind it too, don't you? Deep down. You know enough to have a hunch as to what it could be. [ It's all just speculation, of course. But that's what it feels like. ]

The card is what gave you the memory, right? Maybe they're connected. The one I saw was connected to some sort of war banner, I think. [ He holds up his deck of cards. ]

Do you want to see more of these visions? Or would you rather run away from them?
izanagis: (031)

[personal profile] izanagis 2024-04-24 02:35 pm (UTC)(link)
[The distinction feels meaningful, somehow, in a way that Yu can't quite place. Spirit feels so personal, so individual, and this...whatever this creature is, it comes from something deeper. Like the depths of the ocean -- a sea of...

His eyes flick back to Claude, although he doesn't remember looking back down at the cards, and he nods at the man's speculation. It's right on the money; Yu is close to something. As if he's forgotten something and it's just there at the tip of his tongue. If he can just follow those thoughts, see it through to the very end, he'll figure it out. What's there at the end of that trail? What's waiting for him?

But it's the question that gives him pause.]

I don't, [he admits, because it's the truth, and it doesn't feel right to lie in this case.] If I keep seeing them...I'm afraid of what will happen.

[The life he's carefully cultivated here, the relationships, bonds -- will they still be there if he follows this path? Will he be destroying something he can never get back? And yet...]

... I don't like to run away from things, either, though.

[Running away just feels-- wrong, somehow. His eyes move to the cards, wary and thoughtful.]

What would you do?
feintofhart: ([ mid phase ] arms crossed)

[personal profile] feintofhart 2024-04-27 09:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Me? [ Claude keeps the card in between two fingers, looking for the world the dealer of fate and mischief that others believe him to be. The thin edge of the card slices through the air as he gestures, as deadly as a knife. ]

I've been running as quickly as I can towards these visions of ours. Not knowing is where danger lies. Living in happy ignorance only lasts so long, and at the end of the day, that very same ignorance won't save you for when the inevitable happens. Rather, it simply makes it harder.

[ His own baggage has made that choice easy. He's not happy here. He's doing well enough; he has financial security, a roof above his head, people to warm his bed, company in the quiet night, but he's not content. The flashes of this other life he keeps seeing are grim, but exciting, filled with more purpose than his aimlessly wandering days. ]

I know what these visions mean as much as you do. It could be I'm just hurtling straight into a trap. [ He places the card - the Joker - face down between them. ] Ultimately, it's up to you.
