IT'S A BEAUTIFUL DAY
March 11. The sun is shining, streaming in perfect sunbeams through uncovered windows. Birds and animals twitter outside, basking in trees that are verdant green and full of life. Outside, the town begins to wake, stirring to life with the sounds of ordinary everyday happenings. Footsteps, carts rolling down the road, the distant sound of friendly neighbors greeting each other.

And you–you have lived here your whole life. Or maybe you’re a visitor to this fine town. Either way, you’re a neighbor here, too.

Aldrip is having another beautiful day.
i. OUR TOWN

The town square is a bustling place to be for locals, and this week is no exception. Aldrip is a vibrant swell of activity: stores, stalls, and stands all open their doors precisely on time, welcoming the new day. Things are quiet, theoretically, while the local school is in session, but anyone playing hooky won’t get a second glance. Everything is fine! It’s too nice a day to be inside, anyway.

(Just like all the other days before, all too nice to waste.)

That being said, Aldrip is not without its own brand of nuisance. Fairies are rarely seen in town, these days, but this week, they seem to be in fine form. They can be found playing harmless tricks on people: taking things from them and moving them somewhere else, rolling carts when no one is holding onto them, mostly-unscrewing screws that hold together mechanical parts… They avoid magical pranks, for now, but these mundane tricks are such a nuisance! They even pull all of the wares out of a local vendor’s stall: dozens and dozens of colorful, patterned scarves. They had been on “deep discount,” leftovers from some “Day of Devotion” event, but the discount is about to get even deeper, on account of how dirty they are.
ii. TEMPTING FATE

A recent expedition to the Lorentia Caves uncovered a hidden gem–literally. Enterprising rock enthusiasts have brought back wheelbarrows full of round geodes, and have made a game out of cracking them open. Geodes that are green inside will get a lavish prize: a stay at a local spa or a gift card to a fancy restaurant. Purple or red inside will get a free drink at the local coffee shop, or a small gift card to use at a local shop. Brown or clear gems get nothing special–but you get to keep the rocks! They hold no special properties, but can be nice to look at and make great paper weights, and some of them almost seem to

Anyway.

No one quite knows where the pop-up casino came from, but it’s doing a bustling business at night. Now, this establishment is small, nowhere near the size of the one in the past, and is not nearly as expansive. Nonetheless, it helps create a thriving nightlife in town: there’s games, drinking, dancing, and all sorts of fun. Locals are encouraged to participate either by attending or working, or even performing in some way!

It’s a beautiful day in Aldrip. Just like yesterday. Just like tomorrow. Just like every day s̴h̵o̸u̶l̵d̸ ̶b̸e̵.
iii. LOST AND FOUND

You wake in a maze surrounded by fog. You have no memory of entering the maze. You have no idea which direction you might have come from. You are simply here, and there seems to be no exit above. So. The only way is forward.

You may be alone, or have company. Either way, aside from you and any other characters you may find, the maze seems empty. Without end. Without purpose.

Whatever twists and turns you take, all will eventually find themselves in the center, in their own time. There is nothing here, either, except for an overwhelming sense of aloneness. There is nothing here. There is nothing there.

There is nothing–

...

You wake up.

It’s another beautiful day in Aldrip.

Like all the days before and all the days after, your morning proceeds apace. You start your morning, you say hello to friends and neighbors. You…

… you find something unusual in an area you frequent. An item. It’s small, and somehow, it’s something you think you should know. Some will feel compelled to pick these items up. Some will feel a deep sense of unease when looking at them, and refuse to interact. Turning your back on these items will cause them to disappear. You won’t have to worry about that anymore. Not on this beautiful day.

Picking up the items causes a rush of information to flood your mind. Something like a memory plays in your head: the person in this memory looks and sounds like you. But…you don’t remember living that life, or doing those things. So how does it feel so real?

Throughout the rest of the event, these items will continue appearing. Characters are free to interact with them or ignore them as you see fit. Regaining more memories means they may regain their powers, as well, though whether they remember how to control them is another story.

These memories will feature prominently in the event poll that goes up after this, and your choice of how many memories they regain (or don’t) may have a lasting effect on your character. Not filling it out will also have an impact on them. So please make sure to fill out the poll!
iv. MISSING LINKS
As this strange memory phenomenon takes over Aldrip, other odd things begin to happen. It’s small, at first, and barely notable except that it renders Aldrip slightly less idyllic than usual. There are a few clouds in the sky. You may get caught in a passing rain shower, or maybe sleep through your alarm…

It gets worse.

The end of the month crawls ever closer, slow and steady. As it does, things begin to go missing. Small things, at first: personal possessions, the lunch left in the break room, flyers that look like maybe they were torn down in the town square. Is someone thieving? Here? In Aldrip?? You’ve never known Aldrip to have a problem with crime. Everything is so…

Pleasant.

Everyone becomes a suspect. It could have been your neighbor who took your wallet, or a coworker. Maybe your friend took that bracelet from the counter while you weren’t looking. But close to the end of the month, this starts getting bigger. What happened to that tree along the path you walk every day? Wasn’t there a butcher shop on the corner there? Where have all the birds gone?

ERROR: DATA LOST

Things go missing.

They keep going missing.

Why have they disappeared?

And…where have they gone?
v. THE COUNTDOWN
Sunday, March 31.

It’s raining.

It never rains like this in Aldrip.

Characters wake in the morning to anxiety twisting in the pit of their stomach, inexplicable and impossible to trace. As the day wears on, this sense of foreboding ramps up. Characters may even see significant numbers throughout the day that seem to count…down.

Twelve. Morning. How funny, to see these recurrences. Odd.

Eight. Seven. Around noon. This must be a coincidence, and yet, you cannot help but wonder if it is meaningful.

Four. Late afternoon. Wonder and curiosity are replaced by dread. Whatever is at the end of this countdown–it feels like a finality. Terrifying and unknown.

Two. Night. Those going to bed will find their sleep restless and filled with bad dreams.

UPDATES INSTALLED
RESTARTING…

One. Midnight. The clock strikes twelve, and whatever your character is doing–sleeping, waking, etc–the whole of existence seems to blink out.

(Info about what happens after this will be forthcoming in the event poll results and April’s SOTG.)

basics is that levi is an orphan (though as he's 18 he's been kicked out of the orphanage) and a high school drop out/junkie. got bullied a lot when he was younger and is generally grumpy and stand off-ish. smokes a lot, but less legal drug use is usually behind closed doors (or in an alley late at night). he loiters a lot and sometimes engages in petty theft or graffiti (even though he has no artistic skill). occasionally does More illegal things in exchange for drugs or money for said drugs, but that's less likely to be known unless your character is also doing illegal things. everyone is free to know he's some loser kid with no future though.

Early Days

[personal profile] solitarysoul 2024-03-12 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
1
It was a bright, beautiful day. Clear skies, not many clouds to obscure the sun from shining down and brightening everyone's day.

Levi hated it. He hadn't slept well last night, like most nights, and the bright light was giving him a headache. Would it kill Those Who Were There to let them have a cloudy day every so often? Its not like he's asking for rain or something, it could still be a nice day. Not that he believed in Them or would bother to actually ask them for anything. But he could sure grumble about them.

He was outside anyway, though, because the fresh air was nice and, mostly, because he wasn't supposed to smoke in his apartment. So this morning, like most mornings, he was out loitering in the town square, sitting on a bench and people watching while having a smoke. It was nice and warm out, so he's got short sleeves that leave the track marks on his arms visible to anyone paying attention. The bags under his eyes were quite obvious. Despite how idyllic Aldrip usually was, Levi had still managed to have a tough time.

2
One thing Levi would actually admit to liking in town was the casino. He wishes it had shown up earlier, but he hung out enough at/by it in the afternoons and evenings that he almost made up for it. Since he rarely had any money, and was not a good candidate for employment (and he didn't want a job anyway), he was usually found outside of it. Sometimes Levi would hang out near the entrance, other times out back. Maybe talking to people and socializing, maybe just smoking by himself. Possibly out near the back to take some minorly illegal odd jobs or purchases.

Some nights he managed to have enough money that going inside was worth it. He'd play various games each time, but often ended up playing poker. It was one of the few things he was good at, since his poker face was somehow almost perfect.

(( ooc: I took some liberties(?) here... hope it's okay! but please let me know if it isn't! ))

[ Perhaps unbeknownst to Levi, he's being observed by a cop — one tasked with investigating the very group of dealers with whom the boy is secretly doing business.

Ryuki's been using a crowd as cover to watch the group for a short while now, only losing sight of them once they diverged from their spot to presumably carry out their business. He waits until the boy and the group part ways and the former is on his own again, to walk up to him. ]

Hello. Can I have a word with you?
solitarysoul: (uh?)

its cool!

[personal profile] solitarysoul 2024-03-21 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
[Levi pauses when Ryuki addresses him.]

Uh...

[He looks around, just to make sure this guy isn't talking to someone else but there's nobody close.]

Me? About what?

[personal profile] ae10d1f 2024-03-25 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
[ Seeing as the boy doesn't seem particularly startled by the interruption, Ryuki settles for a more casual approach. ]

You're a resident here, right? I was wondering if you could tell me anything...

[ His words trail off as his attention temporarily drifts to the marks on the boy's arms. From a distance it was hard to tell what those were, but looking up close...

That alone explains a few things. ]

[personal profile] solitarysoul 2024-03-25 04:04 pm (UTC)(link)
[He nervously fidgets as the other man looks him over, holding his arms close to himself in a vain attempt to hide the track marks.]

Anything? About what?

[personal profile] ae10d1f 2024-03-26 03:06 am (UTC)(link)
[ Now that reaction only makes things harder... Even if it's just part of his job at times, he never really liked the idea of using authority to drive others into a corner. ]

... Ah, um, about how to go back to the main entrance from here. I got a bit lost.

[ Shh, there are absolutely noooo signs this far in the back, so this excuse should work, right?! ]

Uh...

[This guy is either on something or has ulterior motives...but the casino's a crowded place, right? He should be okay as long as this guy doesn't want to go somewhere private. Not that he made a habit of going 'somewhere private' with people, let alone ones he just met.]

Y-yeah, I'm headed over that way myself. Follow me.
ae10d1f: (kgj06)

[personal profile] ae10d1f 2024-03-28 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, really? Thanks.

[ Ryuki nods in acknowledgement and follows the boy, letting a comfortable distance slip between them.

Sure, that was an awkward thing to ask. But that was just to cover up an even more awkward approach to a delicate subject...! Which comes not too long after the pleasantly(?) clumsy silence has settled in. ]

Mind if I ask... what happened to your arms?
solitarysoul: (Not Amused)

[personal profile] solitarysoul 2024-03-28 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
...

[Of course. It was only a matter of time before he got that question. Even though rumors traveled fast and his status as a junkie wasn't hidden in Aldrip sometimes people still asked. They hadn't heard, or were from out of town, or wanted to hear for themselves. This Levi isn't ashamed of it, but he doesn't like to talk about it. It invited people trying to tell him what he should do 'for his own good.']

Nothing. I just scratch a lot.

[He does so now, scratching at the underside of his elbow. See? That's totally what happened.]
ae10d1f: (bm11)

[personal profile] ae10d1f 2024-03-29 03:31 am (UTC)(link)
[ Well, Ryuki was hopeful the boy would be less guarded about it, but perhaps it's to be expected.

And given his own experience with alcohol reliance, it's not like he doesn't understand why one would turn to substance abuse to cope with life's challenges, either. ]

But doesn't it hurt?

[ The meaning behind the question is left open to interpretation. ]
solitarysoul: (Unimpressed)

[personal profile] solitarysoul 2024-03-29 03:29 pm (UTC)(link)
No. I'm used to it.

Lost & Found

[personal profile] solitarysoul 2024-03-15 09:03 pm (UTC)(link)
The first
It shouldn't have been there, but it was. Levi knew, looking at the odd symbol hanging in the air in the middle of the street that it was wrong in multiple ways. For one it was floating in midair, but mostly it felt wrong. So much of him was telling him to look away, leave, forget about it and never look back. But there was just enough of him to fight that, to be stubborn and refuse to do what it seemed like he should be doing. Levi was never that great at following rules, if he had been he'd never quit school or started taking drugs. Well, maybe he should have been better at it.

He reached out to touch the symbol and immediately his world changed. For a brief instant his world consisted of a green void, but he was at peace. It didn't last, though, as memories of fighting a god, a demi-god and a creature in the bunker under Prehevil flooded into his mind. As it faded he stumbled backwards, falling on his ass and clutching his head. Just what was that?!

Piano
The piano wasn't like the other weird objects. Sure, it was in the middle of the park and it really shouldn't be there, but it felt different. He was almost afraid of the others, but this one felt more...bittersweet? Sad, but not. He'd tried his hand at the piano when he was younger, he can't remember why, but had given up before learning much. Did he still remember any songs? The strange phantom piano probably wasn't the best place to try and find out, but with everything being so strange lately Levi figured he might as well.
??The piano disappeared as soon as he touched it, of course. There was a fleeting memory of tapping away at the keys in some bar but it only lasted a moment. The memories that came after that fit the bittersweet feeling the piano had given him. His mother playing it. She hadn't really, had she? Or not in this life. But in the memories brought forth she did, she even tried to teach him but he was too young to grasp or remember any of it. This time, when the memories faded, Levi found himself crying. He wasn't sure if they were happy tears or sad tears.??

General
The items quickly become an obsession for Levi, just another addiction to chase getting a fix of. The wrongness never goes away, but it no longer fully registers. Its more of a rush, an increased heartbeat and the need to see what he gets this time.
After the first couple Levi does the unthinkable and stops doing any drugs, aside from smoking. Normally he smokes regularly, but as the obsession with the strange objects and the memories builds he begins chain smoking. He has to, he's nervous constantly. Twitchy, certain that somehow he'll get in trouble with all this. The things felt WRONG, like he shouldn't be seeing them. He took that as some sort of defense mechanism, something that It was trying to hide from him.
What was It? He doesn't know. The council? Those Who Were There? The city itself? Maybe some strange unknown force that was possibly pulling the stings behind everything. Who or whatever it was didn't want him knowing these things, so it had him looking over his shoulder at every waking moment. He wasn't going to stop, so he needed to make sure he was ready for anything that might try and make him.

After regaining more memories later in the month, however, Levi returns to the drugs. So many of the memories were bad, terrible things happening--that he'd done or been responsible for. He was in too deep to stop, though. He still needed to know, to do whatever it was he was rebelling against by interacting with these things. Later in the month Levi seems much calmer, no longer chain smoking and looking over his shoulder every few seconds. He was taking anything and everything to calm his nerves, to make him forget about all the terrible memories he'd seen, or simply to feel like he was in yet another world.

It's not like Ange knows Levi - or so she thinks, anyway. But.. really, regardless of whether or not you know someone, it's really hard to ignore someone just seeming to fall down in the middle of the street out of nowhere.

It doesn't help that the street is relatively quiet right now, which means Ange can't spot anyone else when she turns her head to look if anyone else saw that.. and since the girl knows it means no one else is going to check up on this odd guy who just fell over, the responsibility is going to end up on her shoulders. Especially when she's a little more helpful right now than she'd usually be.

So the redhead slowly makes her way over until she's right next to Levi's fallen form, slowly blinking at him.

"Is.. something wrong?"

Levi's eyes widen as he looks to Ange. He'd forgotten he where he was after the intensity of the visions, and remembering he's in public makes him feel vulnerable. He doesn't really know this girl aside from having seen her around town, but right not it seemed she wasn't a threat. Or going to make fun of him. Maybe.

"I-i-i....I...d-did you see it? The..." he trails off. The what? How does he describe what just happened?

".. the?"

She tilts her head a little to the side as she echoes that last word back at him - like she's thinking about it, but doesn't fully seem to realise what he's talking about. If anything, Ange mostly sounds a little bit confused...

Not necessarily sceptical, though. Instead she looks around them, like she really wants to find the thing that Levi was talking about.

"What do you mean? What did you see?"
solitarysoul: (uh?)

[personal profile] solitarysoul 2024-03-19 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
He looks back to where he'd seen the strange floating symbol. "There was...some sort of picture. And then there was...I-I don't know. I saw...something weird. Somewhere else."

[personal profile] entreats 2024-03-23 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Ange is still looking around, but she can't see any picture. She's imagining it must have been on one of the walls around them - since she's not going to assume pictures would just appear out of nowhere in the air, that's ridiculous! - so she's looking at those, but.. it's all just empty walls to her..

So rather than trying to find a picture that clearly isn't here, she turns back to Levi. Is he just hallucinating?

"What was that 'something weird'?"

Might as well ask, regardless of whether it's fake or not. At worst she'll just have a kind of funny story to tell Ragna once she gets home, she figures.

She shakes her head. Pretty quickly too, like she's just being honest about this.

"Nothing at all." Granted, maybe she was just too late to see what he saw, only seeing the aftermath.. But Ange figures that if there really had been something there, surely it would have stuck around for long enough for her to see it too, right?

"You haven't been drinking or something, have you?"

.. maybe kind of too blunt a thing to just ask someone so plainly..

But then again, it's a more logical way to explain this than anything else in Ange's mind. Hence why she goes for it so quickly.

"No, I haven't, uh..." Well he hasn't been drinking and he didn't think he took anything that'd cause hallucinations. Especially ones that felt as real as that. "Nothing that should have done something like that. People don't usually just trip out in the middle of somewhere unprompted."

He didn't like hallucinogenics anyway. His mind seemed to only be able to picture horrible things.

Okay, Levi. She heard that pause there. That mighty suspicious pause.

There's no way Ange won't raise an eyebrow at that, definitely giving him a suspicious look to go along with it.

"Did you have anything?" Specifying that it was nothing that should have done something like that does kind of imply there was something, after all. Maybe it was just stronger than Levi anticipated. Ange knows a lot of other people in general are idiots who overestimate themselves.
