[ OPEN GROUP LOG ] emergency planning & diplomacy

Who: Everyone! Please use this as an event log -- put up your own starters, and also tag around to your heart's content!
Where: Aldrip's neighbouring towns, the spooky forest, and throughout Aldrip.
What: The Chosen, reeling from the recent forest attack, decide to organize for future attacks, whether that's diplomacy with neighbouring towns, reinvigorating farmland, or getting some combat training in. Please see THIS OOC post for more information!
Warnings: None anticipated; please let me know if I ought to update it!

In the wake of destruction wrought by the strange beast of the forest, Claude and Marianne - both people far more well-acquainted with the ramifications of damaged farm grounds and unprepared civilians than they would like to be - have taken it upon themselves to try to prepare in advance for the next attack, whatever that may be. After discussion with the leads of Aldrip, they’ve come up with a list of what most needs to be done – and they can’t do it alone. With the community of the Chosen at their heels, new and old, for reasons of altruism and for reasons of simple exploration, they have set forth with the following tasks: an excursion through the eerie Pessiria Forest to get to Rumpitur to exchange goods and services for aid from the dubiously friendly naga-like people who live there, restoring life to the destroyed forest and farmlands so that nature can once again thrive, and to properly stock up safehouses with preserved goods, shelter, and weaponry.

What’s in it for you, you ask? Well, when the next attack comes, you don’t want to be the one going hungry.

EXCURSION THROUGH THE PESSIRIA FOREST

Rumpitur is a full day’s trek away, and not a straightforward one; in order to get to their destination, the Chosen must first hike their way through Pessiria forest. They meet with their packs and wagons at the entrance of the forest, a thick, lush wall of foliage greeting them along a winding, unsteady path. If you’re prone to listening to rumours, you may hear some of the locals buzzing about uncertainly: “no business being on that land, none at all”, “Did you hear? That’s where that Froste boy disappeared – when you go in, you never come back out”, “Going in there? They’ll be cursed!”.

No such dangers will greet the Chosen, but the more paranoid among them will be confronted with the grim reality of an entire day’s travel spent on edge, jumping at every flutter of wings from overhead and snapped twigs from the fauna skittering through the brush. During this trek, there will be ample time for the Chosen to stop and rest a while, replenish their flasks and perhaps share a story or two, but be careful; in forests this dense, it’s easy for someone to get lost. Wouldn’t it be a shame if someone was left behind?

To add insult to injury, once they arrive in Rumpitur, they’ll realize that there’s nowhere for them to stay, and the scaled denizens of the place will firmly - though not unkindly - refuse to let them into their homes. That means that to get anything done, the Chosen will need to make camp right outside, a great opportunity to swap stories around the fire, try to rustle up some dinner, go stargazing, or just complain about the effects of the hard ground on your poor old backs. Happy bonding!

DIPLOMACY OF RUMPITUR

Once diplomatic meetings have come and gone, the representatives of Aldrip and Rumpitur have come to an agreement: Rumpitur will provide its aid, but only at a cost. They have their own interests to protect, after all. But they’re flexible on how such a debt is repaid and ask only that the Chosen provide whatever they are able to – and you wouldn’t want to give Aldrip a bad reputation, would you?

Here, the Chosen can truly shine as they’re asked to give what they can. For some, this means sheer manual labour as they haul water from the wells, transport crops and goods from one place to another, or provide much-needed assistance to the smithies and shopkeepers of the land. For others, this means providing gifts, whether that’s their own handiwork of artisanal goods, of art, of culinary delights, of weapons and toys and trinkets that only the Chosen know of. Other civilians may yet yearn for entertainment; a fussy crowd they may be, but with the same people coming in day in and day out, they’re hungry for new music, new acrobatics, new shows.

Be creative in what your characters can provide – and have them ask for help too! This is a true group effort in showing Rumpitur the Chosen’s goodwill, and showing themselves as a steadfast community that can be trusted.

RESTORING RAZED LANDS

Back home in Aldrip, the Chosen are faced with the farmland and lush forests that were decimated in the wake of the attack. Now that the bulk of rebuilding has been completed for the townspeople, it’s time to turn their attention to the abundance of the earth’s gifts that were ingloriously sapped. Here, the Chosen have been asked to replenish destroyed crops by irrigating and milling the land, planting new crops, and tending to the displaced animals that require assistance – though strangely enough, there seems to be some new flora and fauna that’s popping up. Are those plants glowing? Wait, is that a giant bird? It almost looks as though if you caught it, you could ride it… and the villagers of Aldrip seem just as familiar with them as you are, commenting that new life seems to be drifting into Aldrip’s territory on a regular basis.

Have your characters mill about on the farmland together, nurse wounded animals back to health, plant seeds, and help rebuild farms. Nothing says bonding like a good old-fashioned group activity.

Just watch out – those summer storms can be absolutely dreadful, and on more than one occasion, you may find yourselves taking cover in one of the abandoned old farmhouses to wait it out. Get out of those wet clothes, get underneath those (admittedly musty smelling) blankets and use the stove inside to put on some tea. Get nice and cozy – you might be here for a while!

STOREHOUSE SCRAMBLE

Last on the Chosen’s to-do list is to build up their stores so that if an attack of this scale happens again, they’ll be ready for it. The Chosen are to come together as a group to help dig out safehouses and cellars for citizens to hide in during the next attack, and to help bolster their stores. Now that some of their ranks have brought home goods from Rumpitur, it’s time to figure out what to do with it all.

Chosen may assist in hunting and gathering resources, working together to dry and pickle vegetables, dig out safehouses (careful – there are vermin and minor cave-ins aplenty!), and to solicit local smithies to shore up their stores of weaponry – just in case.

That said, weapons aren’t much good without the ability to use them. The Chosen are welcome to test out the wares in a nearby clearing set up specifically for training, especially if they’re from worlds where they weren’t stuck with swords and bow and arrows. There are scarecrows and targets set-up to practice on, but there’s really no replacing one-on-one combat – take a shot at it, and you may even gain a small audience! And are they placing bets…? Well, you’d better do your best, or else more than your pride might wind up bruised.

restoring the lands

[ Still feeling guilty for her part in the land's suffering, Marianne of course has volunteered to help in the fields. She doesn't have nearly as much strength for farmwork, but she's brought her horse to help with the tilling (and moral support is a bonus).

Willow, who has fond memories of Astralin and even fonder memories of his treats, perks up when they arrive on the same field. The other animals don't seem too bothered when they make their way over. Perhaps because Marianne has that passive effect on animals, too. ]

Astralin, it's good to see you.

[Unfortunately, he doesn't have any treats on him this time around, but that wouldn't stop him from feeding Willow. Pleasantly surprised to see Marianne and her steed, he perks up a bit with a smile on his face upon seeing the girl. Astralin waving his hand as a friendly gesture first, before he presses his shovel into the ground so that he can address his friend.]

It is a pleasure to see you as well, Marianne. And I see that you brought Willow with you, but alas... I do not have any treats for Willow today.

[He trails off, and remembers their last encounter. It was quite the emotional one, and he can't help but wonder how she's faring this time around. His smile softening just a bit more, as he adjusts his dirty gloves to take them off for the time being.]

How are you?

It's alright. Willow and I are just happy to see you.

[ She manages a smile. A small one, but brighter than it was when they last spoke. Besides, Willow needn't fear going hungry. She has a reward waiting for her back home. Marianne's whipped up a bucket of special carrot treats, a recipe courtesy of Shinjiro. ]

I... [ She's not sure it would be truthful to say that she's doing well. There are nights she feels sleepless and plagued by guilt, but slowly, she's picked herself up and started looking forward. Planning with Claude had kept her busy this month, and she can at least say she feels more positive than before. ] I feel better doing what I can do to help. What about you?

You flatter me with your words, but the sentiment is returned.

[It is a much brighter smile than the last time, and Astralin himself manages an even friendlier smile. Much more genuine, and filled with happiness to see his friend and her companion. One headpat offered to Willow, while the other one attempts to search through his pocket to see if he has a spare carrot in here somewhere, but he's well aware that he won't find anything.]

As long as you are doing better than when I last saw you. As for me, I am doing fine. I must admit, I have not been doing much but I was called upon to help with the farm work here. I do not mind though; I do like doing this sort of work.

[He needs a break though, with working the fields both at his farm and now this one.]

I am in need of a break, if you do not mind joining me. Unless you are on your way to help with that something you mentioned?

I can walk with you.

[ She has the rest of the afternoon to work, and Willow can graze for a while. The horse leans into the headpat and snorts. She seems to be expectantly waiting for more - she always was a fussy one. Marianne murmurs to Willow that she will have treats for her later. They can't always trouble Astralin. Willow eventually placates herself nibbling on wildgrass, and Marianne joins Astralin to walk. ]

Maybe later you can show me how to best till the soil and sow the seeds, the way you do on your farm. [ ... ] Astralin, the land will regrow, right? I hope there wasn't lasting harm...

[ She knows how to tend to animals, but not how to tend to the destroyed fields. She tries not to sound frustrated with herself, but a little of that does creep in inevitably. ]

[The condition of the fields isn't terrible, but he's certainly seen it in better days. It certainly wasn't Marianne's fault, he truly believes that, and he's certain that he can bring this place back to what it was before. Not placing the blame on her at all, as he turns his head to face her as they walk. A soft chuckle leaving him, as he nods at her words.]

I certainly would not mind that, if it not too much trouble for you. I would not want you to overextend yourself.

[A pause, before he blinks in surprise.]

Certainly. You need not worry about the land; with time and patience the land will grow again. It may take some work, and some new soil, but nothing that we cannot fix. You need not blame yourself, or worry over such things. We will work on it together, and all will be well.

[ Marianne nods, listening intently. If Astralin believes the fields can be restored, then it gives her faith. She lets out a breath of air she didn't realize she was holding. ]

That's a relief to hear. The animals have been returning. I hope it's a good sign.

[ Perhaps it's the seasons turning, or perhaps something has fundamentally changed about the land, but lately she's seen chocobos and other creatures she didn't recognize roaming the meadows. It makes her hopeful. ]

If you say so, I'm sure it'll be alright. You know the land better than most of us.

[He hears that breath she's been holding, and there's a genuine smile that appears on the corner of his lips to be able to bring ease to her nerves. He almost wants to give her a headpat, like he would a daughter, but he holds back that urge to do so and simply chuckles instead.]

Yes, I have noticed that as well. Not only that, but have you noticed the new fauna appearing in the area? I have never seen such animals, and creatures before... It is all quite interesting.

[There's a chocobo from afar that crosses their path, and he rubs his chin curiously. Although, only for a moment, before his cheeks turn a slight shade of pink. Never growing use to compliments, even in his old age.]

Oh... I am honored you think that. I am glad that I can help with something.

It's the truth. Your animals have told me.

[ Maybe not literally, but she sees how happy they are on his farm and how well the plants and animals are cared for. Marianne feels relaxed when she visits, and Astralin has always been willing to lend an ear to her troubles over a cup of tea. His encouragement means more to her than he knows.

Her gaze drifts to the cute new arrival. ]

Noel told me they're called chocobos. Have you seen them run? They're very fast on their feet.

Is that so? Are you an animal whisperer now, Marianne?

[Another soft laugh escapes from him, and his gaze softens much more so. Unaware of Marianne's demeanor around him, since he thought he couldn't help many people but... He finds himself smiling, none the less. At ease around the woman as well, since they seemed to be very similar to each other.]

I have not. But, hrm... Fast, you say? Perhaps they could be used in place of a horse if we are in dire need of mounts.

[ Marianne shares in his soft laughter. She's glad Astralin doesn't find her habit of talking to animals strange. She can't explain it, but she's always felt as if she could understand how they are feeling. ]

Yes. We can recruit them to the Arztenritter. Perhaps they can even take us where horses can't.

[ Chocobos don't have a speed penalty in the desert, do they? ]

[He doesn't find it odd at all, and in fact finds it rather endearing. If she thinks that she has a high affinity with animals, or can understand them to a degree, who was he to judge? He was good at that sort of thing as well, but he figures not as well as her.]

Perhaps... I do wonder if they can fly. I have never seen them in action before, so I do wonder. Our horses may need to take a break from time to time and I do believe, if chocobos have the ability to fly, it will be a great asset.

[He stops walking momentarily, and leans against one of the fences to rest his wary back.]

Do you think you will domesticate one for yourself?
