[ OPEN GROUP LOG ] emergency planning & diplomacy

Who: Everyone! Please use this as an event log -- put up your own starters, and also tag around to your heart's content!
Where: Aldrip's neighbouring towns, the spooky forest, and throughout Aldrip.
What: The Chosen, reeling from the recent forest attack, decide to organize for future attacks, whether that's diplomacy with neighbouring towns, reinvigorating farmland, or getting some combat training in. Please see THIS OOC post for more information!
Warnings: None anticipated; please let me know if I ought to update it!

In the wake of destruction wrought by the strange beast of the forest, Claude and Marianne - both people far more well-acquainted with the ramifications of damaged farm grounds and unprepared civilians than they would like to be - have taken it upon themselves to try to prepare in advance for the next attack, whatever that may be. After discussion with the leads of Aldrip, they’ve come up with a list of what most needs to be done – and they can’t do it alone. With the community of the Chosen at their heels, new and old, for reasons of altruism and for reasons of simple exploration, they have set forth with the following tasks: an excursion through the eerie Pessiria Forest to get to Rumpitur to exchange goods and services for aid from the dubiously friendly naga-like people who live there, restoring life to the destroyed forest and farmlands so that nature can once again thrive, and to properly stock up safehouses with preserved goods, shelter, and weaponry.

What’s in it for you, you ask? Well, when the next attack comes, you don’t want to be the one going hungry.

EXCURSION THROUGH THE PESSIRIA FOREST

Rumpitur is a full day’s trek away, and not a straightforward one; in order to get to their destination, the Chosen must first hike their way through Pessiria forest. They meet with their packs and wagons at the entrance of the forest, a thick, lush wall of foliage greeting them along a winding, unsteady path. If you’re prone to listening to rumours, you may hear some of the locals buzzing about uncertainly: “no business being on that land, none at all”, “Did you hear? That’s where that Froste boy disappeared – when you go in, you never come back out”, “Going in there? They’ll be cursed!”.

No such dangers will greet the Chosen, but the more paranoid among them will be confronted with the grim reality of an entire day’s travel spent on edge, jumping at every flutter of wings from overhead and snapped twigs from the fauna skittering through the brush. During this trek, there will be ample time for the Chosen to stop and rest a while, replenish their flasks and perhaps share a story or two, but be careful; in forests this dense, it’s easy for someone to get lost. Wouldn’t it be a shame if someone was left behind?

To add insult to injury, once they arrive in Rumpitur, they’ll realize that there’s nowhere for them to stay, and the scaled denizens of the place will firmly - though not unkindly - refuse to let them into their homes. That means that to get anything done, the Chosen will need to make camp right outside, a great opportunity to swap stories around the fire, try to rustle up some dinner, go stargazing, or just complain about the effects of the hard ground on your poor old backs. Happy bonding!

DIPLOMACY OF RUMPITUR

Once diplomatic meetings have come and gone, the representatives of Aldrip and Rumpitur have come to an agreement: Rumpitur will provide its aid, but only at a cost. They have their own interests to protect, after all. But they’re flexible on how such a debt is repaid and ask only that the Chosen provide whatever they are able to – and you wouldn’t want to give Aldrip a bad reputation, would you?

Here, the Chosen can truly shine as they’re asked to give what they can. For some, this means sheer manual labour as they haul water from the wells, transport crops and goods from one place to another, or provide much-needed assistance to the smithies and shopkeepers of the land. For others, this means providing gifts, whether that’s their own handiwork of artisanal goods, of art, of culinary delights, of weapons and toys and trinkets that only the Chosen know of. Other civilians may yet yearn for entertainment; a fussy crowd they may be, but with the same people coming in day in and day out, they’re hungry for new music, new acrobatics, new shows.

Be creative in what your characters can provide – and have them ask for help too! This is a true group effort in showing Rumpitur the Chosen’s goodwill, and showing themselves as a steadfast community that can be trusted.

RESTORING RAZED LANDS

Back home in Aldrip, the Chosen are faced with the farmland and lush forests that were decimated in the wake of the attack. Now that the bulk of rebuilding has been completed for the townspeople, it’s time to turn their attention to the abundance of the earth’s gifts that were ingloriously sapped. Here, the Chosen have been asked to replenish destroyed crops by irrigating and milling the land, planting new crops, and tending to the displaced animals that require assistance – though strangely enough, there seems to be some new flora and fauna that’s popping up. Are those plants glowing? Wait, is that a giant bird? It almost looks as though if you caught it, you could ride it… and the villagers of Aldrip seem just as familiar with them as you are, commenting that new life seems to be drifting into Aldrip’s territory on a regular basis.

Have your characters mill about on the farmland together, nurse wounded animals back to health, plant seeds, and help rebuild farms. Nothing says bonding like a good old-fashioned group activity.

Just watch out – those summer storms can be absolutely dreadful, and on more than one occasion, you may find yourselves taking cover in one of the abandoned old farmhouses to wait it out. Get out of those wet clothes, get underneath those (admittedly musty smelling) blankets and use the stove inside to put on some tea. Get nice and cozy – you might be here for a while!

STOREHOUSE SCRAMBLE

Last on the Chosen’s to-do list is to build up their stores so that if an attack of this scale happens again, they’ll be ready for it. The Chosen are to come together as a group to help dig out safehouses and cellars for citizens to hide in during the next attack, and to help bolster their stores. Now that some of their ranks have brought home goods from Rumpitur, it’s time to figure out what to do with it all.

Chosen may assist in hunting and gathering resources, working together to dry and pickle vegetables, dig out safehouses (careful – there are vermin and minor cave-ins aplenty!), and to solicit local smithies to shore up their stores of weaponry – just in case.

That said, weapons aren’t much good without the ability to use them. The Chosen are welcome to test out the wares in a nearby clearing set up specifically for training, especially if they’re from worlds where they weren’t stuck with swords and bow and arrows. There are scarecrows and targets set-up to practice on, but there’s really no replacing one-on-one combat – take a shot at it, and you may even gain a small audience! And are they placing bets…? Well, you’d better do your best, or else more than your pride might wind up bruised.

i: restoring razed lands

[Caitlyn will be the first to admit she lived a life of privilege. She never had to worry about where the next meal came from. She never had to worry about basic needs, or even wants. While she wasn't as much for the high class life as her parents, she still was high class.

Which means she's never tended to the earth in her life. But she is, at least, familiar with it. She was always out playing in the woods, shooting targets, camping and hunting growing up. She loved nature, and was honestly heartbroken to see what happened to the forests here. So she decided to help. When people started rallying volunteers to help with the replanting, she immediately agreed.

It's exhausting work, especially in the heat. She decides to take a break, sitting in the shade of the remaining tree line to eat a snack she brought and rehydrate when she hears it-- the strangest of chirping sounds. It takes her a minute to realize where she heard it before, and the blur of the events in the casino come back to her.

It was one of those strange Raptor creatures. What did Noel call it again? Choco..bo?

She rises to her feet, scanning to woods to see if she can spot the creature in question. She hears it again, noticing it sounds...weak? Maybe hurt? A brief walk through the trees, and she finally spots the beast. The beautiful white bird is on the ground, seeming to be favoring one of it's long legs. Caitlyn can only imagine what other creatures filled these woods that could cause it harm.

She hesitates approaching, considering she knows absolutely nothing about these creatures, but she wants to help. Somehow. Any how.

Feel like giving her a hand?]

ii: hunting party

[Caitlyn likes to shoot, but what she doesn't like is killing. Hunting is necessary in a place like this. It's nothing she's never done before. Back home, most of the hunters she was around always hunted for sport, declaring their best kills of the season, hanging their most proudest on their walls. And while she attended these hunting parties, hunting for sport was never something she agreed with. If an animal was going to be killed, it should at least be for a reason.

But that doesn't mean she has to like that either. And yet, the people in Aldrip needed food to survive, and given the state of the farms and forests, meat was in demand.

So here she is, doing a quick safety check on her folding rifle to make sure it's ready for the current hunting party's adventure.]

Ready to head out?

iii: training

[Caitlyn will never deny her best skill. She's an excellent shot. It's something she's always been proud of, and something she's always worked hard to maintain her skill in. Here in Aldrip, it's been no different. Even before she managed to get her rifle from home back, she had sketched some plans and had a local blacksmith make her a decent backup.

And now, while others were gathering to train and work on their skills, Caitlyn was glad for a moment to sharpen up her own. She had gathered some old trash, just bottles and jars that had been thrown out, and lined them up on a log.

With the object in her sights, she let loose a bullet, smirking to herself at the familiar ping of the object being struck and crumbling from the impact.

Care to watch her continue? Or perhaps you'd like some pointers? She has plenty of targets that can be set up, if anyone cares to join her.]

[ With a bleeding heart for animals, Marianne can't ignore the sound of an animal in distress. She pulls herself up from the ground where she had been crouched tending to crops to search for the creature. In a clearing between trees, she finds a bird she now recognizes as a Chocobo thanks to Noel. The ones at the casino were fast and nimble, but a glance at this one tells her there is something wrong with one of its legs. She spots another woman already there, and though usually reserved, this is one situation where Marianne doesn't hesitate to speak up. ]

Do you know what happened?
bulleting: (pic#16674159)

[personal profile] bulleting 2023-08-27 04:25 am (UTC)(link)
[Caitlyn was crouched and trying to edge closer to the hurt bird when she hears the other voice. She glances back to spot Marianne, shaking her head in reply.]

I found it like this. Something in the forest must've hurt it.

[While Caitlyn knows nothing of this species other than the little she witnessed in the casino, she's being cautious with approaching, as not to spook it. The last thing she wants is for it to try to run and only make it's injuries worse. It's definitely aware she's there, eyeing her with some rustling of it's feathered wings.]

It's okay. We're here to help. [If they were anything like the horses and stags she was familiar with, she wonders if they're food motivated at all? She's grateful to have the remainder of her snacks on her, pulling out the vegetables from her stash. As she holds out the food towards the chocobo, it chirps as it sniffs the food, before snatching it out of her hand and beginning to eat it. Caitlyn uses this opportunity to attempt to use her other hand to stroke it's head, and while it shifts at her touch at first, it seems to care less as it continues to eat.

That's a start, at least.]

[personal profile] snowslip 2023-08-29 05:19 am (UTC)(link)
[ Marianne stays back while Caitlyn feeds the chocobo, not wanting to overwhelm the injured bird with the presence of too many strangers. She's glad to see it still has a healthy appetite, though she wonders if that's only because it couldn't forage for itself. She quietly observes the animal, the clearing, looking for signs of the chocobo's friends or danger. ]

It seems like it won't be able to run for a while.

[ She knows how they rely on their legs. She's seen them race. If whatever injured it came back...a worried look crosses her expression. She can't help her thoughts turning pessimistic. ]

It'll be vulnerable if it stays here.
bulleting: (pic#16674125)

[personal profile] bulleting 2023-08-29 08:02 pm (UTC)(link)
[It seemed Marianne had the same thought. Caitlyn feared whatever hurt it in the first place coming back for it, or worse, coming for them.]

Maybe not run, but hopefully it can still walk. [Hopefully, anyway. She knew enough about horses that most leg injuries meant the horse could never walk again, and had to be put down. She hoped it wouldn't come to that with this chocobo.]

If it will let me, perhaps we can wrap it? Maybe even splint it? Give it just enough support so we can get it out of the woods and closer to town.

[And from there? She didn't know. She could only hope there was someone in town that knew more about healing, especially healing animals, that would be able to help tend to it.]
snowslip: (h2)

[personal profile] snowslip 2023-09-01 05:38 pm (UTC)(link)
...That gives me an idea. I work at the stables. I think we can clear out a space for the chocobo to stay. They'll be safe there as they recover.

[ She suggests softly. Marianne's looked after horses, and she knows how dire a leg wound can be. Losing a horse to injury was always painful. Bringing the chocobo closer to town would reduce the risks, but even better, they can provide the chocobo a place to live on the farm. It would give her peace of mind to watch over the animal and see it heal.

But first, they need to help the chocobo get there. ]

I'll get some wood for a splint.

[ There are some fallen branches over there. Maybe one of them is the right size and shape... ]
bulleting: (pic#16501206)

[personal profile] bulleting 2023-09-03 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
[While Caitlyn wasn't sure what the chocobo actually understood, it seemed to know they were there to help. It nudged her with its head now that it was finished with its snack, a smile crossing her face as she returned her attention to it and went back to stroking it. She would feed it more if she had more, but she made a mental note that she would get more food for it as soon as she could.]

That would be perfect. [A safe space was a start. Once there, she could worry about finding someone to help with the healing process.]

Hear that? We're going to help you. [The chocobo chirped at her words, and Caitlyn moved a bit closer to it, trying to get a better look at it's leg. She could see signs of bleeding, but it was still hard to tell without actually handling it, and she wasn't about to attempt that just yet.

She wished she had rope on her, to help with the splint. But while Marianne searched for wood, she stepped away from the bird and searched the underbrush for some vines they could use as a tie instead. Once she was satisfied with what she found, she returned to the chocobo and continued to reassure it with pets while she waited for the other woman to return.]
snowslip: (h1)

[personal profile] snowslip 2023-09-07 05:52 am (UTC)(link)
[ The chocobo's chirps bring a smile to her face despite the circumstances. It's good to see the bird still lively. There's a lot she can learn from its cheerfulness and tenacity. Now if only they can ease its pain... Marianne picks up a few sticks and settles on a long, sturdy one to bring over to the other Chosen. ]

You're so brave. We'll get you someplace safe, okay?

[ She says to the chocobo as she comes to kneel by them, slowly easing her way into the presence of the bird. Then she addresses Caitlyn. ]

I think its saying it understands. Here...I can help hold the splint in place. Or wrap it, if you want.
bulleting: (pic#16674132)

[personal profile] bulleting 2023-09-24 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
[Caitlyn would definitely agree that the chocobo seems to understand. As Marianne slowly approaches, it turns it's head to her, nudging her as well. It makes Caitlyn smile, seeing the bird trusting them. She didn't know how this would work if it didn't.

To Marianne, she nods in agreement to her plan.]

No, that works. Hold the splint in place, I'll wrap it once you have it in a good position.
snowslip: (h2)

[personal profile] snowslip 2023-10-02 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
Okay.

[ Marianne's treated people in the past. This is her first time attending to a chocobo, but the basic principles are the same as she brings the splint to the injured leg. The chocobo fidgets and cranes its head, as if trying to see what they're doing, or perhaps just angling for more pats. ]

Ah, it's alright. [ Marianne tries to soothe the chocobo. She looks to Caitlyn. ] Do you have any more of those snacks?
bulleting: (pic#16674143)

[personal profile] bulleting 2023-10-08 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Um-- Let me see. [Caitlyn thought she had given it all she had, but she digs through her bag and find the smallest of carrots left. It isn't much, but as she holds it out, the chocobo's attention is immediately drawn to that and away from what Marianne is doing. Once it's attention is diverted, Caitlyn grabs the vines and begins to wrap the splint as snuggly as she could, while also making sure it wasn't too tight.

Satisfied, she scoots back, watching the chocobo check out the splint curiosity. It started to peck at it, but one stroke of the head, and it's attention was back on pets and no longer on the splint.]

You need to leave that alone, okay? It's there to help you. [Whether it's squawk was an acknowledgement or just a happy noise, Caitlyn wasn't sure, but she was glad it seemed so lively. Hopefully that meant they had good odds at rehabilitating it.]

[Erichthonios has never seen a gun up close. Mayhap something of the sound of it is familiar due to recent memory, but the fight in the desert had been a somewhat frenetic and confusing one, and the person he had ended up with in the fray, like him, used magicks.

So as the young woman fires again, he observes her actions with no small amount of curiosity.]

[Caitlyn is no stranger to having someone watching over her shoulder as she shoots. After the satisfaction of her target crumbling, she straightens, before gesturing to the folding rifle in her hands.]

This? Oh. No. It was my father's design. But I might have given him a few suggestions.

I see... 'tis unlike the ranged weaponry with which I am familiar... as is the projectile it launches forth, for I saw neither shaft nor fletching to guide it true.

[Bows and arrows, they have in his time. Firearms, not so much.]

...What is it, if I may ask?
bulleting: (pic#16544369)

[personal profile] bulleting 2023-09-03 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
[While Caitlyn was told the locals here weren't familiar with guns, she doesn't know why she didn't consider others brought here might also not know what they are. It definitely catches her off guard for a split moment, but she recovers quickly.]

It's a rifle. [but considering he has no idea what it is, a name probably isn't helpful. So she's going to explain, while gesturing to the parts as she does.] The trigger here ignites a spark inside, that causes the gun powder to explode, forcing the projectile, or bullet in this case, out of the barrel and towards the target.
beshackled: (pic#16081912)

[personal profile] beshackled 2023-09-03 07:29 pm (UTC)(link)
[It is an explanation Erichthonios is grateful for, for she is entirely correct in her supposition that the word alone would not give him much of an understanding.]

I see. So it relies upon the combustive force of an explosion, allowing the projectile to cross a large distance in a short amount of time... whereas an arrow travels at a slower pace due to the mechanism by which it launches and the drag caused by the fletching...

But the fletching is what stabilizes an arrow in flight. How is it that the rifle's bullet maintains such a precise trajectory...?

[Being that he hadn't known what a rifle was until this moment, he naturally knows naught about rifling.]
bulleting: (pic#16544388)

[personal profile] bulleting 2023-09-24 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
[It's a good thing Caitlyn paid attention to this stuff so she actually knew the answers. But making guns and weapons like them were part of her father's career.]

There's actually grooves inside the barrel that cause the bullet to spin as it fires, which is what makes it stay on course. The accuracy is all dependent on the size of bullet and barrel of the gun. The more energy created as it fires, the more damage it does, as well. [And, of course, knowing how to aim correctly in relation to which type is currently in your hand.]
beshackled: (pic#16081911)

[personal profile] beshackled 2023-09-30 05:20 pm (UTC)(link)
...I think I understand.

[In spinning, the resistance from the air would likely not overly affect one side, and thus be less likely to affect the overall trajectory unless there were a particularly strong wind...]

My thanks for the explanation.

[personal profile] bulleting 2023-10-08 09:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Of course. [Caitlyn pauses, before she holds out the rifle towards Erichthonios.]

Would you like to look at it? You can test it out, too, if you'd like. Get the feel of it.

[She brought plenty of ammo and targets, so she doesn't mind. Given the type of place this was, it probably wouldn't hurt for them to teach other different styles of fighting back.]

I am afraid I have not the calmness of heart suited to wield such long-ranged weaponry... but if you do not mind, I would like to examine it.

[He is immensely curious about its construction.]

Not at all.

[Caitlyn already had the rifle out towards him, but she pulls it back, snapping it and letting the bullets drop to the ground. Better to have it unloaded if he wants to examine it. No one needs to get an accidental gun wound today. She snaps the rifle back in place, before offering it towards him again.]

Here. Have a look.

[Ethlyn's a fine swordswoman, and Claude and Marianne's community planning has given her a good time to practice properly. She's about done for now and is putting a cold cloth on the back of her neck when she sees the collection of junk a distance away. At first she's irritated--who came here and put a load of trash out? And so deliberately.

And then she sees the woman with the gun and realizes it's not junk. It's a range.

Guns may be relatively new to Ethlyn, but she's spent enough time around archers to know not to get anywhere near the space between shot and target. She takes a wide path around to get a better look at the sharpshooter, and waits until a pause before speaking up.]

That's a good idea. I don't know much about these firearms, but I don't think you could reuse the targets the same way you do with archery butts. [Arrows do a considerable amount of damage to people, but there's no trouble getting them out of hay bales.] You must be from somewhere with advanced technology, then, to be an expert with this kind of weapon.

Anything glass definitely can't be reused. Sometimes metal cans can take a few shots. [Albeit just will holes in it. But that still works well enough.]

It's...decently advanced, I would say. Not that I've compared notes with everyone, but you're not the first I've met to be unfamiliar with my rifles.
