[open/mingle] everyone needs a hobby

Who: anyone in Aldrip who wants a hobby
Where: Kotone's club building!
What: It's finally time... for ~~school~~ clubs to be available.
Warnings: None as of yet, but please let me know if I need to edit this!

There's been a building under construction at the edge of town for a few months now; it looks as though at one point it had been a small warehouse for dry goods and storage that hadn't seen use in quite some time before being acquired by Kotone. When time allowed, she's been working on retrofitting it into what could almost (almost) be mistaken for a school practice building on the inside. Now, a sign has been posted on the open door, quite descriptively labeling it as Club Building Now Open!! Come in!!

🎾Gym

Interested in starting a sports team, or just want somewhere indoors and relatively open? There's a volleyball net, balls, and various other kinds of sports equipment that Kotone was able to find/buy/acquire around town for the months she's been preparing. There are also some (wooden practice) weapons available for training and sparring, and a few lockers and showers nearby. They're available for anyone to use at any time, though if anyone breaks a window with her things, she'll be so disappointed and expect help fixing it. :(

🪑"Classrooms"

While not true classrooms in that there's no school and not very many desks, there are several empty rooms available to be repurposed into an activity room. In one room, one can find a very small assortment of musical instruments; in another, a few easels and art supplies. Another room that's far better outfitted is a room with a cute handwritten sign reading Sewing Club! 💖 on its door. Inside, as one might expect, there are two dressforms and several bolts of cloth alongside some Aldrip-style (read: vintage) sewing machines, as well as plenty of needles and thread.

👩‍🍳Kitchen

One of the places that had taken her the longest to set up was the galley-style kitchen and tables. While it may not be the most modern or ornate kitchen in the world, it features the kind of appliances the Chosen would expect to find in Aldrip. It's very much a bring-your-own-ingredients situation, aside from basic spices and bulk staples that are available for anyone -- Kotone doesn't exactly have the same kind of funding a real school's Cooking Club would have, after all! -- but perhaps more importantly, it has a decent selection of pans, trays, and other cooking and baking supplies in the cabinets and cupboards.

Shinjiro has posted a simple sign that says "Cooking Club" on the door. Another sign says "Wash your hands."

⛅Roof

What would a protagonist's building be without a flat roof to climb up to and stare wistfully into the distance? It's a roof. There's a few benches, or you can just stand on it. Be careful!!

This is also where Scott's Teens With Abilities and Talents club meets. Come say hello!

[This is an open mingle! Use it for all your club-creating/club-joining purposes. Feel free to assume that as long as no one is intentionally and obviously going to cause harm with their club, Kotone will approve it and make sure they have a room and (basic) supplies! The pictures are just a guide; adapt a classroom however you see fit! For organizational purposes, there's an open OOC post for club sign-ups here!]

[She sounded pretty monotone over the charms, but... she's also pretty flat in person, huh? Scott can respect that, honestly, although her comment about it not being very busy takes out some of the wind in his sails. Geez, she didn't have to go and point out the obvious!! ~~At least there's enough people to make a RPG party.~~]

Yeah, well, they're just probably late, you know? Busy... picking out an outfit and crap.

[Very convincing. Scott reminds himself that as long as just one person shows up, it hasn't been a waste, and there's been more than that. So, better than the lowest of expectations!! He still sighs a little, but the teen manages a slight smile as he looks at Ange.]

But glad you came. [An official TWAT and everything!] Nothing fancy, but there's chips and snacks. Kind of pulled some things a little last minute.

[ Talk about staying positive in the face of everything! Good job, Scott. You're truly trying your best. Ange would be glad - but definitely not show it - if she knew that her showing up at least made him feel a little bit better..

And in the meantime she can easily pretend she's just here for the snacks, anyway.

Snacks she will already start to partake in - hey, who said she should wait for other people to show up first, she's got dibs! She chews and swallows before speaking up again, at least. ]

You're really passionate about this entire club thing, huh?

[She asked that so bluntly!! Scott nearly huffs, mostly so that he can push down his embarrassment about this. He's supposed to be a super rebel and everything!! Not a club leader that's really involved and wanting things to work out, but this is where he's at.]

Yeah, I mean, it's nothing. [...Except he really cares and it's probably obvious to everyone. Scott will refuse to think about that little fact.] Just wanted a place for teens like us to chill and hang out.

[Get to know each other. Not feel like they're alone in this stupid world? Okay, maybe that's just mostly him, but it's not like he's going to say all that embarrassing stuff out loud anyway!!]

.. nothing, huh.

[ Yeah. Sorry, Scott, but Ange can at least see through that one pretty easily. Maybe it's because she shoves so many feelings down herself all the time that makes it easier to recognize in someone else, or maybe it's just that Scott is a little more obvious when it comes to this particular thing, given how much effort he's putting into getting it off the ground..

But she'll at least relent a little and not further point it out to him. He already seems a little nervous, so he's probably got enough to deal with.

Hence why Ange shrugs it off, instead grabbing a second snack as she asks: ]

So what are the other members like so far?

Nothing.

[Scott repeats, hoping that his shades help with the whole stoic look he's trying to maintain. It fails, but thanks for not calling him out, you're a bro, Ange ~~UNLIKE SOME BULLIES HERE~~

At her question, however, he does a small look around at the other teens standing somewhat nearby, both to take count and figure the best sort of answer.]

Friendly, maybe a little too outgoing, if you get me. [He smiles again, feeling more at ease with this sort of conversation.] You're by far the grumpiest one.

[ Scott.

Look at what you're telling her here. So daring. In fact, it seems to be enough to stop Ange from eating for a moment - still holding one of the snacks in her hand, but not moving it further to her mouth once she hears him say that. Instead she stares over at his face, one eyebrow slowly rising in a questioning sort of way. ]

I can't tell if you're complimenting me or insulting me.

[ Usually that sort of statement would be the latter, Ange.. But then again, she's used to hearing so much worse that 'grumpiest person around' hardly even registers on the scale anymore.

It's just surprising since she didn't expect Scott to say that so boldly. ]

Unless you like less outgoing people. Which sounds like news to me, since I thought you were an outgoing guy too. [ Unless he dislikes his own kind! ]

[He places one of his hands against his hips, the earlier stress and worry that he's had seemingly gone from his demeanor. Now it's full on exaggerated cockiness as Scott finds himself teasing the other teen. This is what he wants to do anyway, just chat with the other members and be... normal for a while. He finds himself slipping easily in that role anyway.]

Both, I guess? Depends on how you take it.

[And is he outgoing? People at his old school would probably say 'no,' but he warmed up to Jean, Kurt, and Jubliee pretty quickly.]

When I want to be, I guess. Depends on who I'm hanging out with, sometimes I think they're lame and don't want to deal with them. [He shrugs.] So, I don't have anything against grumpy.

[ Ange huffs. If she were any more expressive, it might actually have been a laugh, but this is apparently the closest she gets to that.. ]

It also sounds like you think I'm not lame.

[ You know, since he's actively dealing with her. Even basically asked her to join the club. Granted, 'actually getting engaged with rather than ignored' should be the lowest of bars, but.. ]

I guess that means your opinion of me is already higher than most people's. [ And yet, despite that being kind of a pathetic thing to admit to, Ange doesn't really sound bothered. Her tone doesn't shift, anyway. ]

Really pulling the truth out of me.

[Scott considers making a big deal out of it, but eh, he just goes with something a little 'smoother,' although there's a small roll of his eyes that can't be seen.]

No, I don't think you're lame. [She's sort of cool in that grumpy deadpan sort of way, honestly. Plus, she can do magic.]

[ There's something brief about it the reply - making it not seem that grateful, but it's not like Ange doesn't mean what she's saying here.

It's just that expressing this stuff is hard when you're also trying really hard to look cool at the same time. Conceal, don't feel, and all that stuff. ]

I don't think you're lame either. I wouldn't be here if I thought so. [ She shrugs. Scott is the club leader, after all. Joining the club basically means signing up to deal with him. ] Though I'm not really sure what we're supposed to talk about.

[ "We" as in all the club members, at least.. Not specifically her and Scott right now. ]

I'm not really used to this. [ Social situations.

She means social situations when she says 'this.' ]

[Scott decides to sort of be cool for once and not tease Ange regarding her view of him. 'Not lame' seems like a pretty high compliment in that teenager sort of way, but not teasing her. Right. Doesn't mean that will stop him from smiling slightly, the corner of his mouth twitching upward because he's really not great at hiding his feelings ~~not yet anyway~~. Look, and he's honestly pretty happy that his club hasn't failed.

But for what to talk about... he didn't have anything specific on the schedule, besides just getting to know each other.]

You mentioned being a witch before. [Don't ask her if she rides a broomstick don't ask--] You don't really dress like one, unless you keep the pointy hat at home.

[...That wasn't much better, was it?]

[ She raises a single eyebrow. ]

You think all witches wear pointy hats?

[ Scott, that's witch-ist!!

.. except, okay, Ange isn't truly that offended. If anything, she sounds just the same as ever as she's asking that. Maybe she's momentarily imagining herself in a typical witch getup, before quickly forgetting all about that. Way too embarrassing. Cringe, even. ]

One of the witches I know back home has a cat tail. The other has sweets in her hair. There's not really any unifying style, you know.

That and a black dress. I can totally imagine you wearing the dress portion at least.

[Walking around in a pitch black outfit and deadpanning at everyone, Ange feels like she'd fit in the 'goth' sort of crowd. Yeah, Scott can see it. He thinks about it for a moment and a small snicker leaves him, unable to really stop himself.]

Okay, so what's your style? Something that makes you stand out?

[ To be fair to Scott - that actually is a good question. And also great assumptions about Ange that are totally true. Not that she realises he's thinking of any of that, which is why she ignores the snicker.

She's busy thinking about his actual question, anyway, and figuring out how honest she wants to be here. Usually she defaults to 'not very honest', but..

She moves a hand, slowly pointing up at what's keeping her pigtails in place. They're a set of two pink bobbles on each side of her head.

Definitely the kind of hair accessoires more suited for a six year old than an eighteen year old. And yet, with the same dry and direct tone as ever, Ange simply says: ]

These? Aren't I totally cute?

[As she draws attention to her pigtails and the small accessories in them, Scott makes a small noncommittal noise, not looking too impressed by what she's showing off to him. He's not sure if she's serious, because she still has that dry tone he's gotten used to, but he'll just stick with honesty for now.]

Uh, guess they're cute? [A little childish too, but totally not saying that bit out loud.] But not sure if it really makes you stand out, you know?

[Scott Summers, expert on witch fashion-- he leans his face against a raised hand and tries to take in Ange's overall appearance.]

Actually, it makes you seem less intimidating.

[ At least she doesn't seem offended by his opinion. After all, Ange is actually pretty glad if she can just not stand out for once. Everyone already knowing who she was back home without her even having to say a word or introduce herself was really tiring in an entire variety of ways.

Not standing out here? That sounds great to her. She'll gladly just be like the club's wallpaper over in her little corner of the rooftop, honestly.

No, instead it's only the last thing Scott says that seems to truly draw her interest. Or - at least - it's making Ange look at him and speak up with: ]

Did you think I was intimidating?

[ It's hard to tell what answer Ange is even expecting with the sort of tone she's using.. ]

[...........]

N-no, I mean, you don't intimidate me at all. [He huffs slightly and crosses his arms, as if trying to appear macho and cool and not intimidated at all.] Just in general, to some other teens and everything.

[He adds that bit almost lamely.]

It's okay.

[ Sorry, Scott. You're not fooling her with that act - but, on the other hand, Ange also sounds very genuinely unbothered by the idea of it too, since she just keeps on speaking with the same tone as before. ]

People back home thought I was weird. [ .. then again, she's even saying that with the same tone. Like she's casually chatting about the weather.

Maybe it's just Ange being really good at hiding any feelings of being bothered, or maybe she figures Scott might understand, given his own condition. ]

So I prefer intimidating.

[ At least that's tough. It's cool. It's what Ange actually aimed at. ]

[He's fooling himself at least-- okay, maybe not, as Scott deflates somewhat, before rubbing the back of his head with a light grimace. It's less to do with the fact that she's a witch and everything, but guess more of her demeanor?? But he doesn't want to say that.

Especially if people back home called her weird. Well, she sort of is, but so is he.]

Okay, a little, at first. But I don't feel that way anymore, because you're a member of TWAT-- err, Teenager With Abilities and Talents. [He definitely needs to change the name someday, even if it's kind of catchy in a stupid way. Easier to say out loud?? Marketing is stupid.]

So, that makes us friends as well. [Perfect logic okay. Join his club, become frand.]

[ It probably says something how used Ange already is to either the club or to Scott, considering she doesn't even blink when he says the name out loud like that. Especially the abbreviated version.

In fact, she doesn't even address it, even though it's there. Like Scott is leaving the goal wide open for Ange to chuck the ball of a dry remark into.

No, instead she's quiet for a moment, slowly blinks, and then asks: ]

We're friends?

[ Yes, Ange, that's what he just said...

But even though she doesn't sound particularly shocked or offended - she sounds as flat and calm as ever - she's echoing the words back to him all the same, with an audible question mark at the end there. ]

I mean, if you want.

[That's how clubs generally work though, from what he knows. You join a club and become friends with all the other assholes there. He never did participate in them back in his old school, which may be sort of weird considering he's leading one now. It's just, easier right now, for one reason or another. Maybe 'easier' isn't the right word, but it just actually feels important to him instead of stupid chess club or sports club.

Whatever, he's doing this because he wants to is the main thing.

He looks upward for a moment, like he's avoiding her gaze, but it's clear that he's still sort of teasing her.]

Unless you're saying that you don't want to be friends. [He's definitely not above pulling that card, even in the face of Ange's eternal deadpan. Could be more reason why he's pulling it.]

[ SCOTT!

Forget the future twinkie teasing. No, no, this is clearly the worst thing he's ever done to Ange. The biggest personal attack. It'd be one thing if he had left it at that first part, but Scott just had to drag that second part into it. The sort of thing that leaves Ange in the position where she has to actually say something, rather than just.. silently accepting the friendship and trying to seem cool about it..

But the 'trying to seem cool about it' ship is rapidly leaving the port. ]

When did I say I don't want to be?

[ Look at that face.. Ange may have been able to pull a relative pokerface a moment ago, but there's certainly something shifting in it now. The bridge of her nose wrinkles, like she's actually pouting. Just a little bit, but.. it's definitely there. ]

[Only losers here.

Hearing that, Scott turns his head back towards Ange, and just in time to see the slight pout that's formed. His world may be entirely red now, but he's not blind, and the young mutant's cocky grin only increases. He's definitely way too smug about this, but he can't help it.]

Soooo, we're friends then. Come on, say it.

I didn't say we are friends either!

[ .. then what are you saying, Ange--

Though it's probably clear to both of them entirely what it is she wants to say here, right. That's why Scott is looking so smug about it in the first place. And it's exactly because he's grinning that Ange only wants to say it out loud even less, looking more flustered by the moment.

The dumbest possible spiral of teasing. Especially when most people only get this worked up about crush teasing, but no, Ange also apparently just gets like this about mere friendship.. ]

Y-You're just a person I tolerate being around me sometimes! Isn't that enough?

[Sorry Ange, he's having far too much fun.

But geez, it's just friendship, nothing too embarrassing!! However, Scott decides to have some mercy on her and not force the other teen to admit those dreaded words. She's the Monotone Girl that would definitely fit in with the goth crowd and everything, so her struggling makes sense. Besides, he knows that she counts them as friends and that's pretty cool.]

I guess. [Scott accents that word, as if it's extremely difficult to accept this.] As long as you tolerate me more than some other people.
