[While he doesn't actually live in the inn anymore, Shinji is here at the inn today, helping himself to the kitchen as the locals so generously allow him to. Things have been weird? He remembers passing out and waking up somewhere else entirely (or: he was kidnapped to the grove, and unconscious throughout), and while he was out, it seems like a bunch of people had a strange and uncomfortable time.

So!

Well. All Shinji knows to show empathy is making food and punching, and one of those isn't really viable, and the other one he's only doing so that he doesn't have to think about the implications of being mysteriously kidnapped. All this to say he is at the inn, in the kitchen, making Food. He's both very skilled and weirdly fast at food preparation, so there is a lot, and since he lives on a farm with a bunch of egg-laying chickens, primarily it's Brunch.

If you come in looking for a nibble, he immediately snaps:]

Don't touch that. [And then just as immediately, prepares a delightful brunch plate and slides it over a countertop.] Eat this. And don't complain about it, okay?

[Complain... about free brunch... He can't just give out food normally or someone might notice he has Human Empathy.]

[Or: The training arc prompt, because if sleeping with a big axe next to his bed doesn't deter magical shadow kidnappers, he'll just have to... stop sleeping and swing it around all the time?

Whatever. He's workshopping it. He's never really, um, trained before, is the thing— not formally? Not really? His bestie is the training-addicted jock, Shinji is merely a tank with a big axe. So while he is here, at the random spot he's chosen to train in (somewhere with less foot traffic, see, is the sole requirement), he has no planned routine.

Or even, like. Stretches? Do people stretch? Goddamn. It's warm out but he's dressed like it's winter and he's carrying a big axe, which might not be the most comforting of figures to be addressed by, suddenly:]

A. Loitering in the statue garden, where he will be staring at his own statue with an air of obvious and grim Sulking, suspiciously fist-sized rock in hand at his side... ah jeez...!!

B. Not-quite-celebrating at ....the post-event celebration, that is to say, lurking to pick up some food and then disappearing again. He gruffly brushes off any local trying to rope him back in, using the logic that he definitely just slept through the whole thing so please leave him the hell alone this time, but as it starts to get darker he's definitely hanging around as a self-appointed Party Bouncer in case anything out there gets any ideas. Or in case someone in the party starts some shit.

C. Out in the woodsy areas that need replanting, crouched down next to a hole in the ground with a seed in hand. A magic seed. He's literally seen a fairy but he still feels the need to ask,] ....This isn't for real, right?

[The moment he heard Shinjiro speak up, he jumped as he stared at him. Oh right, he should be saying something. At first, he didn't say anything as he wondered what to say.]

Just seeing how you really enjoy cooking for others. I thought that was really nice of you.

[He said before scratching the side of his head. Indeed, this was awkward.]

[Don't call him out like that, it's rude. Shinji looks at him for a long moment, expression hard, like maybe he'll tell him off for this absolute slander-- but no, he just sighs and gestures at the counter. C'mon, kid.]

The rest of these guys can't cook for shit. Sit down.

[Did Ken think awkwardness would excuse him from a full and balanced breakfast? No way, get over here!!]

[Ah, yes, this was one of the things he missed the most after these two years. Even with revenge on his mind back then, he knew he couldn't resist Shinjiro's cooking. With a chuckle, he wasted no time in walking over before taking up a seat.]

I'm glad that your spirits are still up! You haven't changed one bit.

[Which...briefly made him flinch a bit before looking down at the table.]

[That's him, guy who never changes... Honestly that's not far from the truth, as far as he's concerned, but definitely not in the way Ken means, so - jeez. Alright.]

Yeah, yeah. Here.

[A Typical Plate of breakfast gets placed in front of Ken, with the bog-standard eggs/toast/bacon, and then an apple a second later, as a special Ken breakfast bonus. He's still a growing boy...]

....You getting settled in?

[That...certainly was a lot more food than he's used to having for breakfast. However, he wasn't complaining. Grabbing the toast, he starts nibbling it before raising an eyebrow at the apple. He wasn't pulling any punches, was he?]

I think so. It's unusually quiet, it's not what I expect from a prison.

[Pause]

Which makes me a little worried.

[Nope, it's hearty breakfast for growing boys time, congrats kiddo. Worse yet, he's even paying attention more because it's Ken and not just a local stranger, so - enjoy that fruit. ASAP.]

Just a little? ....You missed the big one a few weeks ago, but so did I.

[A shrug!]

So who knows what'll happen next. Better be ready for anything.

[The more that Shinjiro was looking at him, the more he felt the pressure to finish everything on his plate! As he kept on nibbling his toast, he quickly raised an eyebrow at him.]

...Wait, what happened?

[If he doesn't finish the plate, he gets noogies. And judgmental stares, more than the usual.]

Dunno. I woke up in the forest after it was already over. Some kind of... tree cult shit?

[He was knocked out under a tree somewhere, he truly is the worst person to ask about what happened, except that everyone else is some kind of traumatized over it, so. Pros, cons.]

But it really did a number on the forest. Just keep your eyes open.

[He could already feel the judgement as he kept on nibbling said toast. He was so used to eating something quick on the way to school! Looking at the plate, he was feeling overwhelemed!]

I plan on it. For a prison, this place just seems a little too good to be true.

[Pause]

Why would they let us wander around if we're supposed to be criminals?

[Well, he's not in school anymore, so he has to deal with lunch lady Shinji instead. Lunch lady Shinji leans on the counter, shrugging.]

Who knows? They're probably not going to tell us. Whoever "they" are... I don't know about that "Those Who Were There" crap.

[He's been torn on the choice between just going with it and raging against the machine or whatever for a while now, so! Don't be like him, just pick one.]

[Again, he's staring at the food as he finishes his toast. He could feel Shinjiro's looming eyes as he picks up the fork and starts playing with the eggs a bit.]

Either way, I just hope that we can figure it out.

[He's not eating anything. He keeps eying to the side and not gazing at Shinjiro. He wants to say something but he's not sure. Should he say it?]

...Because you and Kotone-san shouldn't be here.

[Don't play with the food, Ken... Shinji doesn't answer for a sliiightly longer than is comfortable pause, but he decides--he's not going to get into this with Ken, of all people. He scoffs. Ken is a good kid; he doesn't need more of Shinji's copious emotional problems dropped in his lap.]

What, and you should?

[Don't look now, but he's reaching over to give Ken one (1) cursory hair ruffle, for emphasis. Stop looking at that breakfast like the world is ending, please.]

Eat your eggs. Can't get anything useful done on an empty stomach, anyway.

[With that hair ruffle, there might have a slight glare. He wasn't 10 anymore, he was 14! Despite him knowing that he should be a kid, he couldn't help but mumble a bit.]

Well...I thought I should since I intentionally thought about murder.

[He said as he look a small bite from the eggs.]

[Thanks for eating the eggs, kiddo!! Shinji is unapologetic about his hair ruffle, but he backs off, to lean on the counter instead.]

So now it's thoughtcrime...? [Ken,] Never mind—don't worry about it. If we can figure it out and get out of here, it won't matter. You didn't do any crimes.

[This is pointedly unrelated to anyone else's individual guilt, because he feels like it needs saying that Ken thinking about a crime and doing said crime are very different? Apparently their mysterious jailers have no set standard for what constitutes a crime, go figure!]

You investigating already, then? Learn anything yet?

That's not...!

[It wasn't the angle he was going for! He just wanted to prove that he had intentions for going through with the murder! That and he felt like he deserves some kind of punishment for leading Shinjiro to his death. It seemed like a way to repent for what he did.]

Anyway, I learned that whoever is in charge? They must be some kind of powerful entity. It seems a little unusual that they wanted to gather up people for some kind of crime...

[It seemed a little too familiar with what he and the others did back home. Not too long ago, he managed to fight against yet another supernatural entity who wanted to bright destruction to humanity.]
