Oh, did Kotone-chan say that? [Ryoji wonders, head tilting.] I suppose that is true.
[It’s quite astonishing really, now that he thinks about it — he’s been around here for so long, after living a life that he always thought was too fleeting. What was originally a month of existence turned into a full year. A lot has happened since then.]
It’s strange — I’m sure a lot of people would think of this place as a prison. But for me, it really is my chance to live as someone who isn’t just a Shadow, or as a god of death. I can’t help but feel guilty, to be honest.
[He has a pained smile to accompany that sentiment.]
I’m glad that this place exists, at the very least.
[ Kotone's always got an eye out for Ryoji. Minato supposes had Ryoji been the one to recognize him instead of her, he'd likely have fretted over him just as much. ...not that this Ryoji was particularly different.
No matter the world, no matter the timeline, he truly was the same as ever. ]
Don't be.
[ That's why Minato pushes back against Ryoji's self-deprecation. ]
...you didn't choose to be here.
[ He didn't choose to be the harbinger of death. ]
You're right, Minato. There's...a lot of things I don't get much a choice of.
[What Minato said is right - he didn't choose to be here. He didn't get the chance to choose anything at all. Whether he lives, or dies, whether he gets to be death or just a normal boy: all of these are simply just destiny to him. No wonder his crime is helplessness - it's a life he's already used to.
[ But they won't. Things won't ever be different no matter how many tears are spilled. There is no use in soothing that ache in Ryoji's chest by offering empty platitudes.
What Minato can do though is reach over, to rest his hand on top of Ryoji's. ]
...in my own world, I made the same decision as Kotone. I let you live. So... this is my responsibility, too.
[He knows what choice he is talking about, now. As much as he wishes they would do the opposite, Kotone wouldn't have been Kotone if she didn't let him live. And that goes for Minato, too.
Ryoji shakes his tears away, focusing on the hand that comforts him instead.]
Thank you. If anything I'm glad I got to meet Kotone-chan - and you, too.
[Gotta look on the bright side of things, no matter for gloomy it may seem.]
[ It's one good thing that's come out of this digital prison. How lucky Ryoji is, one might say, that he'd been able to meet both the people who'd housed him within their souls.
Minato offers Ryoji's hand a gentle squeeze as he shakes his tears away. ]
Yeah. ...I'm glad I met Kotone too.
[ Some might find it a little strange, learning there was someone out there who shared their exact fate, had nearly walked the same life path as them. It's nice though, Minato thinks, to have someone who could understand understand him so deeply. And it's also reassuring in its own way, to know that Ryoji was still "Ryoji" in spite of hailing from a parallel universe.
Even if this wasn't "his" Ryoji, he truly was the same.
Minato places his other hand on top of Ryoji's hand too, clasping it with both of his own. ]
And... I'm glad I met you, too.
[ Wherever the world sent him next, he is certain that these memories would carry over to that next life. ]

So why do tears start forming in his eyes?]
I just wish things could be different.

I don't regret it though.
