"As irritating as you may find them, you should count your lucky stars that you're here with your friends instead of alone. It's never a guarantee in a place like this, you know. Some here have been here for two years without a single friend." He pauses, then amends: "Friends from home, I mean. Thankfully we have the capacity to make new ones."
He lifts one card, twirling it between his fingers. "Even without the use of these handy dandy little conversation cards." He's thinking of Ethlyn, of course, the head of the Clinic; all this time, she hasn't had a single soul to call her own. And of himself, many months removed from Marianne's quiet company, Lorenz and Dimitri's presence having been a mere moment before they'd disappeared again. "Who are the rest of your friends? Maybe I know them. I probably do, in fact." He grins. "I'm very nosy, you know."
Being nosy is definitely not the worst thing you could be! And divulging basic information about his circle, which he does agree is a lucky break by the large, isn't drastic or anything. Urameshi's loud and brash enough to get notice, Kurama's pragmatic and communicative, and Hiei's... Something else.
"I think they all got here around the same time. Maybe last summer? Yusuke Urameshi, Kurama, and Hiei."
"Then it's a good thing, my friend, that I am skilled in the art of self-disclosure," Claude says with a quick wink and a cheeky grin. He's lying, of course, but he lies with such confidence that it would be almost impossible to tell -- you just drown people in entirely too much information and they don't look much deeper.
"I'm familiar with your friends, though!" He exclaims, the light of recognition in his eyes. "Kurama in particular has been of great help to me. He works for me on occasion, down at the Apothecary. As does Hiei, not that I've ever had a proper conversation with the man."
He's there because Kurama is, and is extremely disinterested in Claude besides. Claude won't complain. He needs workers regardless of attitude, provided they aren't manning the counter and offending the customers. "You should come by sometime. I'll give you a friend-of-the-staff discount."
Listen, if this guy hasn't had a whole conversation with Hiei, he's better off for it. Honestly, Kuwabara's a little surprised to discover the diminutive demon's doing any work at all for anybody, but he's also starting to grok the particular attachment Hiei has to Kurama. None of his fuckin' business till it is.
"Sure," he answers, simply and automatically. He can visit an apothecary...sometime. "It's like a pharmacy or something, right?"
"Or something," Claude nods in agreement. "We sell medications, tinctures, oils, teas, soap, candles, tobacco... it's quite the thriving business these days."
He neglects to mention the cannabis, largely because people get so odd about it. A guy can sell soporifics until the cows come home, but the moment he sells something for people to smoke recreationally, it's scandalous.
"Most of it is grown in my greenhouse these days, which is where your friend Kurama comes in. He's been invaluable in getting everything started. How do you know them, anyway?"
Well, sure, now he knows what an apothecary is. Kinda-sorta. Minus the cannabis, which is a subject he's never been given much reason to think about. The rest sounds fine enough, a place to keep in mind while he continues to acquaint himself with everything that's here.
Now... How does he know his world's little collective? He assumes he can be more forthright than he normally would be back home, but that might be a little long-winded. He'll try to keep things simple, then.
"Me and Urameshi went to the same junior high. He, uh... Got a part-time job, I guess, and I started helping him out with that. Kurama and Hiei worked with us."
