TEST DRIVE MEME #13

Test Drive Meme #13
Welcome to Expiation, a pan-fandom adventure game with elements of fantasy, science fiction, and some subtle horror.

THE STORY SO FAR (click to expand!)
-Characters have arrived in Expiation, a seemingly idyllic fantasy world where they have been told they will be judged and sentenced for crimes they were charged with upon arrival.

-Every two months, several characters are chosen for sentencing, where they’re brought to the Courthouse (formerly City Hall) and told to perform a task related to their assigned crime. Their only contact at the Courthouse is a mysterious and long-suffering man called Jerry.

-Over time, characters have begun to realize that not all is as it seems in Expiation: as it turns out, the entire world is a simulation that seems to be run by an artificial intelligence. This AI claims that its purpose, and thus the purpose of Expiation, is rehabilitating the Chosen after their crimes.

-In September 2024, that AI needed to be reset as a consequence of some catastrophic systems failures. So far, there has been no downside to this reset–but the AI has also been strangely absent since then.

-In November 2024, a strange event overtook Aldrip and turned it into a week-long eternal night where technology ceased to work. During this time, the simulation that generates Expiation seemed to malfunction, causing a strange crack to appear in the surroundings. Through this crack, characters were able to see some sort of metal enclosure. They could reach a hand in, but little more than that. This crack has disappeared, for now, but what it means for Aldrip's future remains to be seen.

THERE’S SOMETHING IN THE AIR TONIGHT

Aldrip's Day of Devotion celebration has become tradition among the locals. This year, to celebrate the occasion, the events center will open its doors to both locals and chosen for a special party. Strangely, not a lot of the locals seem to be attending...well, at least it's not crowded. The party takes place in-game on February 17.

The party is a little lackluster, if we're being honest. Corny cut-paper decorations, low-budget food, sappy music. The staff seem to be dedicated to making this event a roaring success, though! They'll be obsessively pairing up any single folks they see, even if that just means grabbing the closest random stranger. Altogether, the event coordinators are doing their very best to make sure every Chosen in attendance gets in on the fun, even going so far as to pull people off the street if they look like they might be trying not to attend! They’ll try to insist on characters playing their games, but they’re only human, after all–they might miss a few people.

Within the events center, Chosen will find a bar with some specialty themed cocktails, as well as a dance floor and a lounge area. They’ll also find some games and activities. Some of these are normal: cards, dice, even charades. Some…well, some seem to be taking the theme of devotion rather seriously.

A (SPEED) DATE WITH DESTINY

You find yourself seated at a table. On the table is a five-minute timer and a list of increasingly personal questions. Seated across from you: another Chosen. Maybe you signed up willingly. Maybe the event coordinator shoved you over here. Maybe some well-meaning friend has bullied you into it. Whatever the case, here you are, on a series of speed dates that the event coordinators are hoping will end in amour!

(But we all know it’s not that easy.)

The idea is simple: you each read a question for the other to answer until the five-minute timer is up. Then, either you and your new beloved leave the table together, or you change tables for a different match. Simple! Thing is, sometimes the timers don’t really work the way they should; you may find yourself feeling like this five minutes is a very long five minutes. And the questions are sometimes romantic in nature (what quality do you look for in a partner?), but sometimes they get a little…conceptual. (is humankind inherently good or evil? as an example.) Some of these questions may also assume a level of familiarity that some Chosen don’t have. Better just to roll with it.

We’ve included some sample questions here, but please do feel free to come up with your own!

SECRET DELIVERY

It’s not an errand, it’s a scavenger hunt! …or so it’s billed by the event staff. They promise they’re not pawning their work off on you. Each Chosen is given a small box–about the size of their tablets, actually–at the door, and they’re tasked with finding the person this small box belongs to. There’s one for every event attendee, but none of them have names on them. That would be too easy! Instead, the tags have simple directions: Give this box to someone with brown hair or give this box to someone who looks sad. The descriptions vary from box to box, and can even include activities (for example, give this box to someone who was dancing!). As per the rules, if someone already has a box, they’re not allowed to accept another.

So. What’s inside?

Opening the box, Chosen will find a small trinket nestled delicately within layers of tissue paper. It’s a pin, or a hair clip, or a pendant on a chain–something Chosen will be inclined to wear. Strangely, even though the box wasn’t addressed to them by name, each Chosen will notice that the subject of the trinket somehow speaks to their experience or their past. Perhaps a butterfly means something personal to them, or a dagger, or a dog. All are asked to put on these trinkets in the spirit of the event; the event coordinators won’t punish anyone who refuses, but they will offer to help put them on, and they’ll gush over how beautiful they look.

These trinkets have a strange effect, though: they compel the wearer to speak their true feelings. These feelings can be romantic in nature, but need not be; they simply feel compelled to tell the truth about how they feel on any particular subject.

SECRET TUNNEL! SECRET TUNNEL!

The banner over this tunnel, inexplicably located on what you really thought was an exterior wall of the building, reads “Tunnel of Love and Treasure.” Doesn’t that sound nice! But entering this tunnel isn’t without complication: as the attendant will tell you, everyone who enters must be paired with another person–and it’s that attendant’s job to do the pairing! You might get paired with someone you know, with a partner or a friend…or you may be paired with a total stranger. It’s subject to the whims of this attendant, who is enthusiastic but seemingly a little clueless about whatever bonds might currently exist between people.

The second rule: explorers must hold hands the entire time they’re in the tunnel! There’s no better way to grow the feelings between you than touch, as everyone knows. Once Chosen enter the tunnel, they’ll find they actually can’t let go–their hands are stuck fast. Welp. This is fine. Right?

The tunnel is strangely…realistic inside, looking like a cave rather than the inside of an event hall. How odd. There are all sorts of nooks and crannies in which a treasure might be hidden, but examining them leaves no trace of anything that might be considered a treasure. But not to worry! There’s a light at the end of the tunnel, eventually–in quite a literal sense. It opens into a large cavern, where another event attendant sits, strumming a small guitar. Go ahead, ask him where the treasure is. He’ll tell you, “the treasure was the bond you made along the way!” Or maybe he’ll sing it to you, if you’re lucky. (Unlucky?) And…well, that may sound like a crock, but you’ll find your hands unstuck and your way back out of the tunnel clear and easy.

Wildcard Make your own fun! Just because it’s not in the prompts doesn’t mean it’s not possible. Have at it! Go crazy! Try not to break anything (too much)!

sigh. cw: suicide ideation

[personal profile] humandispel 2025-02-19 01:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Awwww, you'd kill me? That is so nice of you, Goldilocks!

[A-are those sparkles in his eyes? Too bad it doesn't last that long.]

What a shame, though. Such a painful death isn't what I am hoping for. So no, thank you.
babilun: (GIL_039)

ooooo i hate them

[personal profile] babilun 2025-02-20 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you. I am gorgeously magnanimous.

[ Stop. Cease. ]

Oh, you want a peaceful and gentle death? What bold and big dreams you have there.

[ The Golden King scoffed as he continued to walk down the tunnel with Dazai's hand in his. This stroll would be much more tolerable if Dazai were a woman, but alas. ]

Chasing after Death isn't very attractive, have you considered trying to court Death instead? Ask them out for dinner?
humandispel: (117)

what is this cr truly

[personal profile] humandispel 2025-02-21 05:03 pm (UTC)(link)
[I can't do that I also roleplay Death -]

Is that not what every human yearns for? Who would want to die in a slow and painful manner?

[One of his hands might be locked in with Gil's, but he remains very animated with his other.]
babilun: (GIL_B008)

when two forever boys meet

[personal profile] babilun 2025-02-22 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
[ Quickly, somebody roleplay Ereshkigal for us. ]

Most humans would rather live their whole life and then die of old age. That's the norm. Well... [ Gilgamesh glanced at Dazai. His expression was amused. ] You don't seem like the type that would like to die like that.

[ Gilgamesh could only make educated assumptions about the man before him. ]

Besides, never mind that. Your ability is quite a hassle.

[ The King of Heroes was whining now. ]
humandispel: (279)

[personal profile] humandispel 2025-02-22 04:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Dying of old age counts as dying peacefully, don't you think? Although who knows when that is going to happen!

[Does he even want to live that old? It sounds like a dreary experience. Still, he thinks, perhaps he wouldn't mind reaching an age that Odasaku wasn't able to attain.]

Let me guess, you're trying to do a fancy magic trick right now? Sorry to say, but no one is an exception to No Longer Human.
babilun: (GIL_038)

[personal profile] babilun 2025-02-22 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
. . .

Your ability is named after a book?

[ Was the first thing that Gilgamesh thought of. Well, that would make sense, considering the young man's name. The King of Heroes wasn't surprised, after all, he met many authors that became Servants. ]

Hmm, I understand. [ What do you understand? ] How interesting. The mages in my universe would love to split you open.
humandispel: (373)

[personal profile] humandispel 2025-02-24 05:17 am (UTC)(link)
[Don't worry about it. His world is just chuuni like that.

He makes a face, either way.]

That sounds horrible, no thank you. Your mages sound exactly like the kind of people I simply won't die to.
babilun: (GIL_006)

[personal profile] babilun 2025-02-25 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
Fuahaha! So picky. Your standards quite high, no wonder Death is so elusive around you.

[ Dazai, why are you so funny? Stop it, your entertainment meter on Gilgamesh's bar is slowly rising. ]

Then what kind of people do you wish could kill you?
humandispel: (41)

cw: suicide ideation

[personal profile] humandispel 2025-02-26 04:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, that's simple!

[He holds out his finger: there's only one kind.]

I wish to be killed by my own hand.
babilun: (GIL_049)

cw: encouraging suicide ideation

[personal profile] babilun 2025-02-27 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
[ One would think that Dazai's suicide ideation would put off Gilgamesh, but instead, the King of Heroes simply grinned. As if he approved of it. ]

Now, that's a fine way to die. Live how you want and die how you want. That's how humans should be.

[ Gilgamesh put his free hand in his pocket. ]

Though I could never envision myself committing suicide, as much as I loathe myself.
humandispel: (382)

cw: more casual suicide talk

[personal profile] humandispel 2025-03-01 05:04 pm (UTC)(link)
[Usually people would either tell him to seek help, or to wish him luck in his endeavors. Gilgamesh's response, however, is one of a kind.

That's the case, isn't it? People live and die for themselves.]

How come you don't want to kill yourself, then? Is it against your principles?

babilun: (GIL_067)

CW: GILGAMESH!

[personal profile] babilun 2025-03-05 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
It would be a shame for a beauty like myself to die!

[ Was his reasoning that he gave to Dazai. A believable one but if Dazai has read the Epic of Gilgamesh, he can figure out that Gilgamesh wouldn't die that easily. ]

Besides, I'm already nothing more than a phantom.
humandispel: (376)

cw: please stop talking about suicide

[personal profile] humandispel 2025-03-05 06:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Eeeeeeeeeeeeeh.

[Drawls out Dazai, clearly unimpressed. Even with his knowledge of the Epic, this guy is just too full of himself!]

I suppose you can't really kill yourself if you're already dead, huh.
babilun: (GIL_042)

cw: please stop this cr in general

[personal profile] babilun 2025-03-06 06:49 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Gilgamesh swung his arm up, the one that was holding Dazai's hand as he tilted his head. ]

I can still be killed, but it certainly wouldn't be easy.

[ In the first place, Gilgamesh can kill himself with ease, nobody knows his weakness more than himself however-- ]

It would be boring to die without experiencing the new pleasures of the new era of humanity.
humandispel: (167)

[personal profile] humandispel 2025-03-07 02:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Eeeeeh, so that's what you're interested in?

[Dazai responds, not really seeing the point of it all. Humanity's pleasures are kinda boring, if he's being honest.]

If you want recommendations, you should try sake and canned crab. That's a lot of "humanity's pleasures" in one go.
babilun: (GIL_025)

[personal profile] babilun 2025-03-13 04:26 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Dazai, you should travel to a different solar system and a different planet. It might change your views immensely. ]

Sake existed a long time but canned crab hmm...does it taste good? Have you ate it before? If anything, I would like to eat Singaporean Chili Crab but I haven't had the chance to go to that country yet.
humandispel: (01)

[personal profile] humandispel 2025-03-13 05:30 pm (UTC)(link)
[bro why did you say this i want singaporean chili crab now]

It is! Almost as good as the real thing, but you don't have to work for it! Just open the can and enjoy! If they make canned chili crab, that would be just as great!
babilun: (GIL_007)

[personal profile] babilun 2025-03-15 03:45 am (UTC)(link)
[ We're now SEA. ]

Oho, then you can't die yet without trying that out. There are so many different cuisines out there. Eat till you are content and then go die!
humandispel: (432)

[personal profile] humandispel 2025-03-15 04:09 pm (UTC)(link)
[always has been.]

Oooh, that's a good idea! Let's have a good massive feast as a final supper!

But the question is, where am I supposed to find chili crab in here?
babilun: (GIL_025)

[personal profile] babilun 2025-03-16 05:07 pm (UTC)(link)
[ There will be many Final Suppers if Dazai and Gilgamesh were involved. Do you think Gilgamesh is just going to stop on Chili Crab? There are so many soups for the hot pot to try out! ]

Perhaps we should borrow ( kidnap ) a chef who knows how to make the dish. There should be a high-quality chef here.
humandispel: (169)

[personal profile] humandispel 2025-03-19 02:22 pm (UTC)(link)
[oh no at this rate Dazai wouldn't be able to die! whatever shall he do?]

You sound so certain, o King of Kings. How would you even know they're high-quality in the first place?
babilun: (GIL_068)

[personal profile] babilun 2025-03-21 03:43 am (UTC)(link)
[ Sounds like a personal problem. Good luck figuring that out! ]

Ha! Buttering up to me, I see! I'll allow it!

[ Meaning that Gil like what Dazai called him. Keep on bolstering up Gilgamesh's ego. It's so easy to please him. ]

These eyes of mine are trained to tell the finest qualities. People enjoy quality over quantity, after all.
