[Yu's eyebrows lift at the familiar face across the table. They work in the same place, sometimes, but he's never had much opportunity to talk to the other guy -- and normally, that would be exciting. The chance to get to know someone new. But he's been debating that recently: is it better to keep trying, or to shut everything down? People come and go so often that it's hard to decide.
... but that's not a debate to have as a first conversation.
Especially when someone says something like--] ... A fox? [Hilariously, his eyes dart to Kurama's side, as if he's expecting a vulpine companion to be there.] You mean you?
[Kurama has never been the most social when it comes to humans, avoiding invitations and dodging interactions by going so far as joining the club with the least members at his school. That hasn't changed over the years, even here in a world of other powered beings, he mostly kept to himself since their arrival months ago, focusing largely on his friends from home and keeping busy.
He is aware that Yu had left his secret santa gift for him at the apothecary, even if it was meant to be anonymous. The redhead had intended to thank him for it, but the anonymity left him in the awkward position of just how to go about that, and here they are months later.
Yu's current struggle over the merits of getting to know others when anyone can come and go without notice is not really one he can relate to. He's lived long enough to know loss, the lifespan of an apparition may be centuries, but they were often enough cut short without warning. He might not want the fox's opinion on that while debating the topic for himself, considering his specific convictions on the matter.
Green eyes follow the other's gaze curiously, taking a moment to realize just where his thought process had gone, as only the two of them were sitting here. He leans back in his chair, head tilting slightly with his answer as he looks back at Yu, instead.]
Precisely.
[He's never sure what kind of reaction he's going to get with that reveal, but so far everyone seems to believe him, even if it requires some degree of explanation to get there.]
[There's something so earnest about the way Kurama says that -- not as if it's a joke, but a fact. Under other circumstances, Yu might try to find some kind of joke to respond with, something weird or stupid or funny. It's not just for his own mood that he chooses not to -- it's because of that sincerity, too. Whatever Kurama means --and Yu is very curious to know, for sure-- it doesn't seem like a joke to him.
Still, he lets his response border on the absurd.]
I-- guess I was expecting fox ears or something.
[His expression at that is a bit of a smile, sheepish but otherwise superficial.]
[There is something about being here, about the glitches and the doubles - every little thing that has happened since their arrival that seems to be pushing him back towards fox that does give a more somber quality to it all, for him at least. Still, he manages to be as flippant about it as possible, find what little joy one can in their circumstances and all that, even if Yu is correct about the absolute sincerity in his response. As far as Kurama's concerned he is a fox and he'll always be one, human life and all.
The smile and confusion are both so automatic at that response that they come at the same time, a look of slightly bewildered amusement crossing his features before composing himself again, seeming faintly nostalgic in a way, instead.
Bordering on absurd achieved, Yu.]
I'm afraid that might have been rather alarming for my mother.
[The answer is also near automatic, coming out before it even occurs to him that maybe without context it makes no sense. Then again, he's never very good at explaining himself, at times even when the others demanded clarity. So have something perhaps equally absurd in response.]

Last I checked, at least.
