TEST DRIVE MEME #13

Test Drive Meme #13
Welcome to Expiation, a pan-fandom adventure game with elements of fantasy, science fiction, and some subtle horror.

THE STORY SO FAR (click to expand!)
-Characters have arrived in Expiation, a seemingly idyllic fantasy world where they have been told they will be judged and sentenced for crimes they were charged with upon arrival.

-Every two months, several characters are chosen for sentencing, where they’re brought to the Courthouse (formerly City Hall) and told to perform a task related to their assigned crime. Their only contact at the Courthouse is a mysterious and long-suffering man called Jerry.

-Over time, characters have begun to realize that not all is as it seems in Expiation: as it turns out, the entire world is a simulation that seems to be run by an artificial intelligence. This AI claims that its purpose, and thus the purpose of Expiation, is rehabilitating the Chosen after their crimes.

-In September 2024, that AI needed to be reset as a consequence of some catastrophic systems failures. So far, there has been no downside to this reset–but the AI has also been strangely absent since then.

-In November 2024, a strange event overtook Aldrip and turned it into a week-long eternal night where technology ceased to work. During this time, the simulation that generates Expiation seemed to malfunction, causing a strange crack to appear in the surroundings. Through this crack, characters were able to see some sort of metal enclosure. They could reach a hand in, but little more than that. This crack has disappeared, for now, but what it means for Aldrip's future remains to be seen.

THERE’S SOMETHING IN THE AIR TONIGHT

Aldrip's Day of Devotion celebration has become tradition among the locals. This year, to celebrate the occasion, the events center will open its doors to both locals and chosen for a special party. Strangely, not a lot of the locals seem to be attending...well, at least it's not crowded. The party takes place in-game on February 17.

The party is a little lackluster, if we're being honest. Corny cut-paper decorations, low-budget food, sappy music. The staff seem to be dedicated to making this event a roaring success, though! They'll be obsessively pairing up any single folks they see, even if that just means grabbing the closest random stranger. Altogether, the event coordinators are doing their very best to make sure every Chosen in attendance gets in on the fun, even going so far as to pull people off the street if they look like they might be trying not to attend! They’ll try to insist on characters playing their games, but they’re only human, after all–they might miss a few people.

Within the events center, Chosen will find a bar with some specialty themed cocktails, as well as a dance floor and a lounge area. They’ll also find some games and activities. Some of these are normal: cards, dice, even charades. Some…well, some seem to be taking the theme of devotion rather seriously.

A (SPEED) DATE WITH DESTINY

You find yourself seated at a table. On the table is a five-minute timer and a list of increasingly personal questions. Seated across from you: another Chosen. Maybe you signed up willingly. Maybe the event coordinator shoved you over here. Maybe some well-meaning friend has bullied you into it. Whatever the case, here you are, on a series of speed dates that the event coordinators are hoping will end in amour!

(But we all know it’s not that easy.)

The idea is simple: you each read a question for the other to answer until the five-minute timer is up. Then, either you and your new beloved leave the table together, or you change tables for a different match. Simple! Thing is, sometimes the timers don’t really work the way they should; you may find yourself feeling like this five minutes is a very long five minutes. And the questions are sometimes romantic in nature (what quality do you look for in a partner?), but sometimes they get a little…conceptual. (is humankind inherently good or evil? as an example.) Some of these questions may also assume a level of familiarity that some Chosen don’t have. Better just to roll with it.

We’ve included some sample questions here, but please do feel free to come up with your own!

SECRET DELIVERY

It’s not an errand, it’s a scavenger hunt! …or so it’s billed by the event staff. They promise they’re not pawning their work off on you. Each Chosen is given a small box–about the size of their tablets, actually–at the door, and they’re tasked with finding the person this small box belongs to. There’s one for every event attendee, but none of them have names on them. That would be too easy! Instead, the tags have simple directions: Give this box to someone with brown hair or give this box to someone who looks sad. The descriptions vary from box to box, and can even include activities (for example, give this box to someone who was dancing!). As per the rules, if someone already has a box, they’re not allowed to accept another.

So. What’s inside?

Opening the box, Chosen will find a small trinket nestled delicately within layers of tissue paper. It’s a pin, or a hair clip, or a pendant on a chain–something Chosen will be inclined to wear. Strangely, even though the box wasn’t addressed to them by name, each Chosen will notice that the subject of the trinket somehow speaks to their experience or their past. Perhaps a butterfly means something personal to them, or a dagger, or a dog. All are asked to put on these trinkets in the spirit of the event; the event coordinators won’t punish anyone who refuses, but they will offer to help put them on, and they’ll gush over how beautiful they look.

These trinkets have a strange effect, though: they compel the wearer to speak their true feelings. These feelings can be romantic in nature, but need not be; they simply feel compelled to tell the truth about how they feel on any particular subject.

SECRET TUNNEL! SECRET TUNNEL!

The banner over this tunnel, inexplicably located on what you really thought was an exterior wall of the building, reads “Tunnel of Love and Treasure.” Doesn’t that sound nice! But entering this tunnel isn’t without complication: as the attendant will tell you, everyone who enters must be paired with another person–and it’s that attendant’s job to do the pairing! You might get paired with someone you know, with a partner or a friend…or you may be paired with a total stranger. It’s subject to the whims of this attendant, who is enthusiastic but seemingly a little clueless about whatever bonds might currently exist between people.

The second rule: explorers must hold hands the entire time they’re in the tunnel! There’s no better way to grow the feelings between you than touch, as everyone knows. Once Chosen enter the tunnel, they’ll find they actually can’t let go–their hands are stuck fast. Welp. This is fine. Right?

The tunnel is strangely…realistic inside, looking like a cave rather than the inside of an event hall. How odd. There are all sorts of nooks and crannies in which a treasure might be hidden, but examining them leaves no trace of anything that might be considered a treasure. But not to worry! There’s a light at the end of the tunnel, eventually–in quite a literal sense. It opens into a large cavern, where another event attendant sits, strumming a small guitar. Go ahead, ask him where the treasure is. He’ll tell you, “the treasure was the bond you made along the way!” Or maybe he’ll sing it to you, if you’re lucky. (Unlucky?) And…well, that may sound like a crock, but you’ll find your hands unstuck and your way back out of the tunnel clear and easy.

Wildcard Make your own fun! Just because it’s not in the prompts doesn’t mean it’s not possible. Have at it! Go crazy! Try not to break anything (too much)!

[He is now guiding Dante inside with that hand; he might as well be one of the pushy staff members himself if not for his more subtle touch.]

Why don't we see what they've got at the games table? [No point in getting them a drink, alas! How is one supposed to even socialize with a person properly without sustenance, honestly.]

[?

???]

< O... kay. >

[More importantly, is Altius okay?]

< Just to make sure, no one's forcing you to do this, right? I know the locals tend to get pushy about their festivals. >
chimericalclaw: (a: pleasant)

[personal profile] chimericalclaw 2025-02-11 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
[He's definitely not! But his smile softens a bit as he lets out a brief chuckle, and he slows a bit, though he doesn't remove his hand from Dante's shoulder, either.]

If I was being forced into anything, I promise I'd tell you, no matter what nonsense this place might throw at us.

[He would take great offense in being forced into much of anything. He'd definitely make it extremely difficult for them in that case... not that he's about to say that outright.]

I just think it would be nice to spend a few hours getting to know each other without worrying about anything strange.

[personal profile] followyourstar 2025-02-11 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
< If you're sure... >

[They're not sure if they believe that, but in the end they find themselves more worried about the whole "without anything strange" sentiment. Sure, it's possible, but when is this place not trying something strange?

They sigh.]

< I might as well play one game here, just to say I tried. >
chimericalclaw: (a: a greeting)

[personal profile] chimericalclaw 2025-02-11 03:41 am (UTC)(link)
[Yes, fine... wishing for a party without oddities is probably a stretch, but where else is he going to enjoy such a large gathering of Chosen? At least this isn't their designated bimonthly crisis.

To Dante acquiescing:]

Wonderful.

[Altius really is just thinking about cards—maybe gin rummy?—but then they're accosted by one of the staff proper and whisked off to sit at a table together, and for his part, he doesn't resist at all. At the table there's a covered box, inside of which are letters cut out of cardboard with heart-themed wrapping paper taped on top. They're not allowed to look inside just yet though!

The staff member's enthusiasm is evident as she directs the pairs that have been wrangled for this game.]

Okay! Now put your hand in the box and take out a letter. Your partner has to share something about themselves that starts with that letter!

[Altius shrugs at his companion, apparently fine with this setup. It seems normal?]

Do you want to take one first?

[This seems like more of an ice breaker to them than any sort of game, but maybe that's the point. And they did agree, and Altius seems unbothered by it all, so maybe it's better to just go with it?

They nod and hesitantly reach into the box, pulling out an "R."

A few names and concepts come to mind, only to be swept away just as quickly. Something about them, huh?

They let out a chiming "Ah!" when an answer finally comes to mind.]

< Restaurants. Back home, we'd all usually go out to eat or grab something to go after a successful mission. >

[Well... the others ate. Dante just socialized with everyone else or used the time to unwind on their own.]
chimericalclaw: (a: pleasant)

[personal profile] chimericalclaw 2025-02-11 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)
[He threads his fingers together and waits patiently, eyes on the unmoving hands of their face as they ponder. And it's a nice enough answer that they come up with, a few topics to follow up on coming to mind immediately, but also—

Their missions. Missions where their team dies again and again, so Dante dies again and again—more times than I can count. He has to sit here and pretend he doesn't know about any of that. He has no other option, because everything would collapse if he let himself be connected to that thing he is, past all the walls he's built with the pleasant facade.

So, he pretends like he always does, only pausing momentarily before he continues with interest:]

Was there anywhere you liked going in particular, or was it different every time?

[Perhaps they can't eat, but there's still something to be said about the atmosphere of a restaurant, particularly when going with a group of people.]
followyourstar: (02)

[personal profile] followyourstar 2025-02-11 08:49 pm (UTC)(link)
< Different every time. We're almost always traveling from District to District, so there's not a lot of time to get used to one place in particular--not unless it's a chain. >

[Sometimes they wondered if it was really the food everyone was interested in or if it was just the fact that it was something different.]
chimericalclaw: (a: calm)

[personal profile] chimericalclaw 2025-02-11 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)
[Altius hums in thought.]

That's the nice part of traveling, being able to see or try something new. I always like trying to find the local hole-in-the-wall, myself. It's a good way to make a unique memory—get to know the people who live there.

[Dante's experience may be more condensed in that way, but he thinks the same ideas apply. And for him, he's always trying to learn more about people.

With his attention back on Dante, rather than his more general platitudes:]

For some reason you strike me as the sort to gravitate towards diners.
followyourstar: (16)

[personal profile] followyourstar 2025-02-11 10:06 pm (UTC)(link)
< Diners? Me? >

[They lift their hand, finger half-curled to point at themselves.]

< I guess that kind of casual atmosphere isn't bad. Especially if you go with someone else. Maybe somewhere a little more quiet if I'm on my own. A cafe, maybe? >

[They can't see themselves anywhere considered fine dining, though. Everything they've heard about those kinds of places just sounds... stuffy and stiff, no matter how good the food may or may not be.

Altius, though, especially with that suit of his... But that's jumping to conclusions.]

< What about you? >
chimericalclaw: (a: solutions)

[personal profile] chimericalclaw 2025-02-11 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
[He nods to agree with the thought of a cafe; he's not immune to the appeal, and it's certainly a sort of place he'd be expected to like, anyway.]

If I were younger, maybe I'd say something with a view, but—I've spent so many meals with a view talking about optimization and revenue that I think it's spoiled the idea.

[There's a sense of a weary sigh in the way he says it. Meetings, always with the meetings. His tone turns a little wistful as he thinks of his actual answer, though, gaze off to a distant spot on a far wall.]

So if I'm going somewhere to enjoy myself... something down to earth. Somewhere in the middle of an old neighborhood where they've been making the same thing for twenty years.
followyourstar: (09)

[personal profile] followyourstar 2025-02-12 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
< Huh... Can't say I was expecting that. >

[The furthest thing away from what they were thinking, even.]

< So... something that feels like home? >
chimericalclaw: (a: a greeting)

[personal profile] chimericalclaw 2025-02-12 04:54 am (UTC)(link)
[He lets out a laugh that's a little wry, though the reason for that might not be apparent.]

That is what it boils down to, isn't it.

[When you don't feel like you've ever really had a home, you look for one where you can... he supposes. After a brief pause to consider that, he adds, half-joking:]

But the airs I put on must be working, for you to say that. Part of the appeal is avoiding anyone who might want something from me.
followyourstar: (16)

[personal profile] followyourstar 2025-02-12 05:20 am (UTC)(link)
[They nod.]

< I can get that. We all have things about ourselves that we want to hide, each for our own reasons. Can't imagine having as many business interests as you do helps with that. >

[Not to mention the fact that he still doesn't register to that particular sense the Bough grants them at all.]
chimericalclaw: (a: must we?)

[personal profile] chimericalclaw 2025-02-12 05:42 am (UTC)(link)
[Something between sympathy and guilt crosses his expression, but then it gives way to something more neutral, and Altius hums his acknowledgement. They all have secrets, that's true. Given that he knows a few of Dante's, it's only fair that he's a bit more "open" with them than he would be with someone else.]

You're right. I've done it to myself all over again...

[Would he change that, if he started over in this place? Probably not, but... it's a thought, that he could have taken a different approach.]

Well. Should it be my turn now?
followyourstar: (18)

[personal profile] followyourstar 2025-02-12 06:02 am (UTC)(link)
< Hey, I'm not one to talk. >

[They offer him a helpless shrug of their own in return. End up somewhere new with not-quite-endless possibilities before them... and they end up with something close to the job they did before.]

< Oh, right. Go ahead. >

[They set their letter to the side as they wait for him to pull one of his own.]
chimericalclaw: (a: unsure)

1/2 i literally went to a random letter generator and it gave me this

[personal profile] chimericalclaw 2025-02-12 06:42 am (UTC)(link)
[Something something, everything looks like a nail when you only have a hammer...

Well, anyway. Altius follows through, putting his hand in and pulling out—

An X. What? Why is this even in here? So says his frown and the momentarily baffled expression he gives it.

... You know, he's just going to set that aside and draw a new one, because he just got done talking about how tiring business can be, and he doesn't want to talk about X-rays.]
chimericalclaw: (a: solutions)

2/2

[personal profile] chimericalclaw 2025-02-12 06:44 am (UTC)(link)
[This time, it's a C. Okay, this one he can work with. Now to think of something interesting... he brings a hand over his chin.

Hmm, hmm... He opens his eyes with the light of an idea. Here's something.]

"Camera." I've never particularly liked having my picture taken. [Is there a theme emerging here, perhaps, with the way he's talking about himself? He reminisces with a faint smile:] My father wanted to take one for every occasion, which is probably why I resisted it so much to begin with.
followyourstar: (09)

[personal profile] followyourstar 2025-02-12 05:51 pm (UTC)(link)
[Yeah, they're definitely seeing a pattern here.]

< And you have to get it taken a lot as part of the job, I'm guessing? >

[A few ticks carry along the meaning of a thoughtful hum.]

< No offense, but... Is there something you do like about your job? > [Knowing there's not enough "no offense" in the world to make that question any less rude, they clarify:] < It just that... So far, it sounds like everything it's asking of you goes against what you yourself would want. >
chimericalclaw: (a: pleasant)

[personal profile] chimericalclaw 2025-02-12 06:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I avoid it where I can, [he admits.

But Dante's question causes him to pause, a look somewhere between realization and curiosity in his eyes. Frankly... it's true. He's had to throw so much of himself away for it, but he's never even thought twice about doing it. Thoughtfully, his gaze moves away, and he eventually says,]

I get to help people. [He smiles faintly.] That's how I like to think of it, in any case. Working with so many people, seeing what they can accomplish together. Learning their strengths and helping them past the obstacles keeping them from that. It's satisfying.

[A breath leaves him and he sits back.]

I suppose I'm complaining too much. [He opens his mouth, hesitates, decides to speak after all.] I haven't had the chance in a while.
followyourstar: (14)

[personal profile] followyourstar 2025-02-12 07:46 pm (UTC)(link)
< No. No, I get it. >

[All of it, really. At least to some extent. How much they're actually helping anyone and for how long, Dante can't really say. Given how things are in the City, with all its suffering and violence and exploitation, they're not naive enough to think Limbus Company is out there doing anything other than contributing to it all.

But the Sinners... Dante can help them. At least for awhile, at least in some small way. And that has to be worth something.

They just wish they could have the same ability to freely complain about their job that Altius does. Can't go spilling too many secrets, can they?]

< It's annoying, but worth it in the end, right? Enough to keep pursuing, even in another world. ...Or some AI's crime-obsessed simulation. >
chimericalclaw: (a: genuine)

[personal profile] chimericalclaw 2025-02-12 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
That's right.

[He has to let out a muted, half-sardonic laugh at the reminder of their prison.]

It feels a bit out of place in the midst of all these people with powers and technical skills, but... it seems to me like the best thing I can offer, so I have to try.

[All that's a bit depressing, though, isn't it? Not the sort of conversation he was really aiming for—and even the information he has as only "Altius" is enough to tell him that Dante's experience on the same topic is probably unpleasant, too, especially with the commiseration they've just offered. After a huff at himself:]

In any case. [He looks back to them.] Any thoughts on photography, Dante?
followyourstar: (27)

[personal profile] followyourstar 2025-02-12 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
< Not really. I've only gotten my photo taken once, at least officially. Can't say whether or not someone's done it when I haven't been looking. >

[Hm... That's not a very good answer though, is it?]

< But the one time I did have it taken wasn't so bad, so I don't think I mind having it taken? >

[Maybe it would be different if they'd done it as many times as Altius did.]

< Sorry. I can pick out a different letter? >
chimericalclaw: (a: pleasant)

[personal profile] chimericalclaw 2025-02-12 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
[He tries to be reassuring in response to the apology, with a rise of his shoulders that's barely a shrug.]

You don't have anything to apologize for. [Really, he doesn't want to put them in an uncomfortable spot due to their amnesia. Some mild awkwardness from Altius's initial insistence they participate, maybe, but he'd thought of that as something to be overcome.]

I thought I'd ask if you have any interest in taking pictures yourself, but I won't stop you if you'd prefer the box.
followyourstar: (16)

[personal profile] followyourstar 2025-02-13 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
[The tick of surprise that follows makes one thing clear: Dante hadn't even considered the possibility.

They hold off on dipping their hand back into the box to ponder the idea, a hand drifting up to where their chin would be.]

< I don't know what I'd even take pictures of. I know people do it when hanging out, but... I mean professionally. Artistically? >
