TEST DRIVE MEME #13

Test Drive Meme #13
Welcome to Expiation, a pan-fandom adventure game with elements of fantasy, science fiction, and some subtle horror.

THE STORY SO FAR (click to expand!)
-Characters have arrived in Expiation, a seemingly idyllic fantasy world where they have been told they will be judged and sentenced for crimes they were charged with upon arrival.

-Every two months, several characters are chosen for sentencing, where they’re brought to the Courthouse (formerly City Hall) and told to perform a task related to their assigned crime. Their only contact at the Courthouse is a mysterious and long-suffering man called Jerry.

-Over time, characters have begun to realize that not all is as it seems in Expiation: as it turns out, the entire world is a simulation that seems to be run by an artificial intelligence. This AI claims that its purpose, and thus the purpose of Expiation, is rehabilitating the Chosen after their crimes.

-In September 2024, that AI needed to be reset as a consequence of some catastrophic systems failures. So far, there has been no downside to this reset–but the AI has also been strangely absent since then.

-In November 2024, a strange event overtook Aldrip and turned it into a week-long eternal night where technology ceased to work. During this time, the simulation that generates Expiation seemed to malfunction, causing a strange crack to appear in the surroundings. Through this crack, characters were able to see some sort of metal enclosure. They could reach a hand in, but little more than that. This crack has disappeared, for now, but what it means for Aldrip's future remains to be seen.

TDM top-levels are open to all, whether you are already in-game or not. New characters, please put TDM in your subject header so we’ll know you’re trying things out! You can also put your top-level in the TDM DIRECTORY at the bottom of the post. Current players may use TDM threads as part of their AC proofs. Applications for February are closed to current players only, as we're at player cap. But we are still allowing for new players to hop on the TDM!

You can view our CALENDAR to keep important dates in mind. RESERVES open for current players on February 18th and APPLICATIONS will open on February 21st.. After this, applications will next open in April.

THERE’S SOMETHING IN THE AIR TONIGHT

Aldrip's Day of Devotion celebration has become tradition among the locals. This year, to celebrate the occasion, the events center will open its doors to both locals and chosen for a special party. Strangely, not a lot of the locals seem to be attending...well, at least it's not crowded. The party takes place in-game on February 17.

The party is a little lackluster, if we're being honest. Corny cut-paper decorations, low-budget food, sappy music. The staff seem to be dedicated to making this event a roaring success, though! They'll be obsessively pairing up any single folks they see, even if that just means grabbing the closest random stranger. Altogether, the event coordinators are doing their very best to make sure every Chosen in attendance gets in on the fun, even going so far as to pull people off the street if they look like they might be trying not to attend! They’ll try to insist on characters playing their games, but they’re only human, after all–they might miss a few people.

Within the events center, Chosen will find a bar with some specialty themed cocktails, as well as a dance floor and a lounge area. They’ll also find some games and activities. Some of these are normal: cards, dice, even charades. Some…well, some seem to be taking the theme of devotion rather seriously.

A (SPEED) DATE WITH DESTINY

You find yourself seated at a table. On the table is a five-minute timer and a list of increasingly personal questions. Seated across from you: another Chosen. Maybe you signed up willingly. Maybe the event coordinator shoved you over here. Maybe some well-meaning friend has bullied you into it. Whatever the case, here you are, on a series of speed dates that the event coordinators are hoping will end in amour!

(But we all know it’s not that easy.)

The idea is simple: you each read a question for the other to answer until the five-minute timer is up. Then, either you and your new beloved leave the table together, or you change tables for a different match. Simple! Thing is, sometimes the timers don’t really work the way they should; you may find yourself feeling like this five minutes is a very long five minutes. And the questions are sometimes romantic in nature (what quality do you look for in a partner?), but sometimes they get a little…conceptual. (is humankind inherently good or evil? as an example.) Some of these questions may also assume a level of familiarity that some Chosen don’t have. Better just to roll with it.

We’ve included some sample questions here, but please do feel free to come up with your own!

Romantic:
-What do you admire most about me?
-What’s the hardest thing about being in love?
-Would you ever be the first to confess your feelings?
-What's really working for you in this relationship?

-Do you prefer sexy or smart?
-When did you know you were in love with me?
-Which part of my body do you find attractive?
-If your body was a plant, how many times a day would I have to water it?

Less…romantic:
-How do we know we're doing the right thing?
-Why do you think we're here?
-Do you have a right to be happy or should you earn it?
-What is a person? Is it the mind or body?
-Is it more important to love or be loved?
-If you died today, would you be satisfied with the life you've lived?
-How do you know you're not dreaming right now?
-Do you feel happier in summer or winter?
-What color do you feel like best describes yourself?
-If you could be an animal, what would you be?
-What is your most secret wish?
-Describe your perfect day.
-What is a “soul?”

SECRET DELIVERY

It’s not an errand, it’s a scavenger hunt! …or so it’s billed by the event staff. They promise they’re not pawning their work off on you. Each Chosen is given a small box–about the size of their tablets, actually–at the door, and they’re tasked with finding the person this small box belongs to. There’s one for every event attendee, but none of them have names on them. That would be too easy! Instead, the tags have simple directions: Give this box to someone with brown hair or give this box to someone who looks sad. The descriptions vary from box to box, and can even include activities (for example, give this box to someone who was dancing!). As per the rules, if someone already has a box, they’re not allowed to accept another.

So. What’s inside?

Opening the box, Chosen will find a small trinket nestled delicately within layers of tissue paper. It’s a pin, or a hair clip, or a pendant on a chain–something Chosen will be inclined to wear. Strangely, even though the box wasn’t addressed to them by name, each Chosen will notice that the subject of the trinket somehow speaks to their experience or their past. Perhaps a butterfly means something personal to them, or a dagger, or a dog. All are asked to put on these trinkets in the spirit of the event; the event coordinators won’t punish anyone who refuses, but they will offer to help put them on, and they’ll gush over how beautiful they look.

These trinkets have a strange effect, though: they compel the wearer to speak their true feelings. These feelings can be romantic in nature, but need not be; they simply feel compelled to tell the truth about how they feel on any particular subject.

SECRET TUNNEL! SECRET TUNNEL!

The banner over this tunnel, inexplicably located on what you really thought was an exterior wall of the building, reads “Tunnel of Love and Treasure.” Doesn’t that sound nice! But entering this tunnel isn’t without complication: as the attendant will tell you, everyone who enters must be paired with another person–and it’s that attendant’s job to do the pairing! You might get paired with someone you know, with a partner or a friend…or you may be paired with a total stranger. It’s subject to the whims of this attendant, who is enthusiastic but seemingly a little clueless about whatever bonds might currently exist between people.

The second rule: explorers must hold hands the entire time they’re in the tunnel! There’s no better way to grow the feelings between you than touch, as everyone knows. Once Chosen enter the tunnel, they’ll find they actually can’t let go–their hands are stuck fast. Welp. This is fine. Right?

The tunnel is strangely…realistic inside, looking like a cave rather than the inside of an event hall. How odd. There are all sorts of nooks and crannies in which a treasure might be hidden, but examining them leaves no trace of anything that might be considered a treasure. But not to worry! There’s a light at the end of the tunnel, eventually–in quite a literal sense. It opens into a large cavern, where another event attendant sits, strumming a small guitar. Go ahead, ask him where the treasure is. He’ll tell you, “the treasure was the bond you made along the way!” Or maybe he’ll sing it to you, if you’re lucky. (Unlucky?) And…well, that may sound like a crock, but you’ll find your hands unstuck and your way back out of the tunnel clear and easy.

Wildcard Make your own fun! Just because it’s not in the prompts doesn’t mean it’s not possible. Have at it! Go crazy! Try not to break anything (too much)!

Casual, [he partly agrees with an ambivalent hum,] but something a little less absurd, I was hoping. I can only handle so much of that.

[His life is already a huge joke so he has to be so serious to compensate, you know,]

I'll be surprised if you get anything out of that other than sugar and air.

[personal profile] manifestering 2025-02-11 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
Have some whimsy.

[You know, like him. He's whimsical. Somehow. He twirls the cookie between his fingers, idly.]

Is it supposed to be particularly nutritious? I did not think so.
chimericalclaw: (o: skepticism)

[personal profile] chimericalclaw 2025-02-11 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
[The look Altius shoots Octavian will hopefully be plenty, but—]

Do I really strike you as the sort of man capable of being whimsical? [A half huff, half sigh.] But nutritious, no. Flavored with anything at all is what it should be.

[But isn't!]
manifestering: (016)

[personal profile] manifestering 2025-02-11 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
[hehehe]

Perhaps you should try new things. [Like whimsy!] Is that why you brought in all of those other trays? You could ask your myriad dates about their favorite flavorings.

[All those dates... How are your dates going.]
chimericalclaw: (a: must we?)

[personal profile] chimericalclaw 2025-02-11 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
Ha. I just wanted something about all this to feel less... [wow look he's actually going to go off his usual polite script:] half-assed.

[There's even the slightest hint of a drawl in it. You're a bad influence, Octavian.]

I don't know if it's actually helped.

[He... has had worse dates, he thinks. So there's that.]
manifestering: (004)

[personal profile] manifestering 2025-02-11 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
[Embrace being kind of an asshole in public, it's liberating. Octavian gets away with it because of the whimsy, QED--

He's amused, though, so it's working.]

I would not know. I have never attended a party quite like this. With so many... paper streamers. And pushy hosts.
chimericalclaw: (a: disdain)

[personal profile] chimericalclaw 2025-02-11 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
[He's under the impression his entire everything would collapse if he stopped being so unfailingly nice and generous all the time, so, yeah, that's not going to happen.

He rests his cheek against one hand.]

I've been to plenty of parties, and I promise this isn't typical. Between the mediocre atmosphere and their enthusiastic attempts to drag us into it... they're as inconsistent as ever.
manifestering: (016)

[personal profile] manifestering 2025-02-11 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
[Consider: it's much easier to stop caring about that kind of thing.]

I have been to parties. [Please; did he behave any more appropriately at those parties, no, but that's not the point. They weren't this cheap.]

It makes one wonder. The AI must be able to research the applicable holidays. Is this a punishment perhaps? Have we not earned a finer celebration?
chimericalclaw: (a: impressions)

[personal profile] chimericalclaw 2025-02-11 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
[Altius raises his eyebrows to display his doubt without voicing it. You, sir, at parties? Even without the ghostliness, he struggles to envision it.]

A punishment for what, poor dreaming habits? [Hmph. But he acknowledges:] Anything is possible. Maybe we've been too quiet, do you think?

[It's a little bit of sarcasm, but he wouldn't be surprised if that were actually the case. Their captors may very well be bored and want to inflict that on the Chosen as well.]
manifestering: (010)

[personal profile] manifestering 2025-02-11 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
[He had a very social brother and a business partner enamored with rubbing elbows, so. Parties did happen.]

If that were the case I would expect this to be more sinister in some way. Instead this is... somewhat dull.

[He leans over to look at the dating questions again. Hmm, no, the plant one is still the best one, everything else is either total schlock or the same vague nothingness that that bimonthly app spits out at them. Sad.]

Are these helping your romantic ventures?
chimericalclaw: (a: curiosity)

[personal profile] chimericalclaw 2025-02-11 04:02 am (UTC)(link)
[Whenever Altius was dragged anywhere he tried very hard to ignore the situation entirely until he escaped, so perhaps his idea of knowing about parties one doesn't want to be at is skewed.]

Mmh. [A mild agreement. He's grateful for it being dull, rather than sinister. He can improve upon dull with minimal effort. He glances to the questions when Octavian brings his attention back to them.] They're something to work with. A way to find out what interests someone and what doesn't without having to think too long.

[He turns his eyes and his upper half to the ghost in his vessel with his cheap cookie.] I've learned that you have some interest in ridiculous hypotheticals, for instance. Maybe an appreciation for double entendre?

[Something to work with, is it... Octavian looks over the questions again, like, well, if he says so. He doesn't think he could work with these, and least of all because they're kind of boring.]

Double... oh. [Wait, let him reread, he earnestly just thought the plant thing was funny, where is it sexual--] "Water"? Really. This is all it takes.

[He gives Altius a Look as if to convey that very young people must have written these questions, if that's both clever and also somehow erotic. Good gracious.]

That aside. I would not have expected to find you here in the first place. We are both learning new things.
chimericalclaw: (a: calm)

[personal profile] chimericalclaw 2025-02-11 05:27 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Altius shrugs with a gesture of one hand. When he's presented a list of suggestive questions, he's inclined to see them for what they are. But see? Absurd. ]

You're not the first person to have that impression. [ The first here, perhaps, to be determined, but the first in the past several years, whenever he's gone out looking for dates? Absolutely not. ]

I suppose you must think me too boring to be interested?

[ He doesn't sound remotely offended. ]
manifestering: (016)

[personal profile] manifestering 2025-02-11 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
The opposite actually. I assumed you would be too busy for this kind of riffraff.

[Although he did bring his own food... If he'd brought an entirely fresh party setup, maybe Octavian could be convinced.]

And I do not consider you boring. For the record.
chimericalclaw: (a: a greeting)

[personal profile] chimericalclaw 2025-02-11 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you, I suppose. [He says it with a chuckle.] I'm not as busy as I'm used to.

[Because yes, even with Two Whole Businesses to juggle, it's on such a smaller scale that even if the work load might be considered... difficult by anyone else, for him it's almost natural. And that's not counting his, ahem, extra-curriculars back home,

so he has? time? for something resembling relaxation.]

It's not only "riffraff" among our number, not to mention I've seen a few new faces. [But none he recognizes, which is... something he has complicated feelings about. Those feelings do not surface physically in any form or fashion.] Are you only here for the novelty?
manifestering: (016)

[personal profile] manifestering 2025-02-12 11:58 am (UTC)(link)
[Once again Octavian pauses like he's only just realized something, and casts a cursory glance around for some of those new faces. He really does not expect anyone familiar, after such a lengthy stretch of time, but— just in case. After the dream, well.

Just in case.]
If you see anyone who claims to know me: no they do not. Unless the face is the same.

[Anyway, novelty! Of course,] The novelty is always compelling. At least a little. But also...

[He looks around again, this time for Viktor, since they're trading off robot watching duty and it's Octavian's turn to muck around and collect cookies. He points when he spots him, and then points lower, to the attending robot. Look, look at him. He's so rotund.]

Field testing. For our project.
chimericalclaw: (a: is that so)

[personal profile] chimericalclaw 2025-02-12 06:36 pm (UTC)(link)
[Same face...? Doppelganger, twin, some sort of intentional copy? There is a set of two clones here. Who knows with all these different worlds and their conventions...]

Noted.

[He doesn't end up having the chance to ask with the change in topic, and to be frank, it doesn't really matter to him. When Octavian points, his brow furrows mildly at the sight of the man with the crutch, but his attention is turned quickly enough to the miniature construct—

project, is it.

He buries the thought, raising his eyebrows at Octavian.]

You've been busy, I see. Anything in particular you're hoping to see from it?
manifestering: (005)

[personal profile] manifestering 2025-02-14 02:47 am (UTC)(link)
[The little robot is a much better topic, Octavian agrees. He brightens slightly just from Altius looking at it, obviously very pleased with himself.]

Independent navigation while completing tasks. [A beat.] Including not falling over.

[Balance is very tricky, especially when in a much more crowded place than Octavian's workspace with its conveniently cleared floor for walking practice. The robot isn't doing much of anything right now, but watch it long enough and it will toddle off to deliver someone, well, whatever it happens to pick up. Paper heart. Cup. Cookie.

The commands are very basic for this particular field test.]

Ultimately: running some simple errands.
chimericalclaw: (a: curiosity)

[personal profile] chimericalclaw 2025-02-16 03:05 am (UTC)(link)
[Altius notices that shift; the inventor is easier to read now that he has to worry less about dispersing, he supposes.

He wonders if this is the sort of satisfaction that drives Octavian. At the same time, he finds himself needing to put more effort than usual into pretending he's interested. Such is the choice he's made for himself, alas.]

Building a machine within a machine. [He shrugs one shoulder as he adds:] Supposedly. Are you a programmer as well?

[He's not even considering magic might be involved; given things like balance and responding to certain inputs are important to some of the prostheses his company engineers, his mind automatically goes to technology as the explanation.]
manifestering: (011)

[personal profile] manifestering 2025-02-16 03:48 pm (UTC)(link)
[Altius digging his own grave (having to have conversations): Who put this hole here?

Octavian neither notices nor cares, though, so it's going great. He's too enamored with his robot to pay attention to others' responses to it, unless they start trying to knock it around, or something.]

As in with a computer? No. Runework powers this project.

[And Viktor stuck a hex crystal in there, but that's not something he's going to go around advertising.]

I am unsure how a programmed construct would function here. Even a simple AI within an AI's domain seems... [he waves his hands a little,] antithetical.
chimericalclaw: (a: is that so)

[personal profile] chimericalclaw 2025-02-20 04:15 am (UTC)(link)
[He turns a newly critical-slash-intrigued eye towards the bot, letting out a hm of something like realization. Runework... magic that works as a set of instructions. He wonders... could the magic of his world be utilized in such a sense? He's only ever given direct commands to his constructs and let them go about it, rather than establishing sets of conditions and behavior...

Now that he's actively looking, he does sense something magical within the thing. For nothing more than a toddling errand-runner it seems like a rather strong signal, so to speak, but he doesn't know what Octavian's true intent is with his creation.

Ah, well. It seems the ghost is rather proud of it, so he'd be surprised to not hear more of it later. He'll file that away in memory as something that might be of use after all...]

Do you think it can emulate biological and magical processes but not electronic? Or rather that it wouldn't?

[can you play doom on expiation?]
manifestering: (011)

[personal profile] manifestering 2025-02-20 02:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it would be threatened.

[He shrugs lightly; he doesn't claim to know much, but since these AIs running their little world here do seem to have... emotions of a sort, it stands to reason one would want to protect its own existence from another AI and what it could do. Probably.]

The previous iteration was prone to corruption. One of us creating an intelligence capable of the same things as our AI overseer might make it nervous.

[But again, not his area of expertise.]

No doubt it would be possible. However I doubt it would be allowed to remain for very long.
chimericalclaw: (a: curiosity)

[personal profile] chimericalclaw 2025-02-23 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Interesting.

[It's a neutral reply, largely, though he personally leans in the opposite direction of that opinion. How different are any of them from a truly advanced AI capable of emotion, really? Especially when he knows there's now an android among the Chosen...

Hmm. As he considers further...]

Do you think that's what's happened to the copies?
manifestering: (012)

[personal profile] manifestering 2025-02-24 10:43 am (UTC)(link)
Of the AI?

[Illicit copies of a version of this program that was prone to nearly collapsing in on itself and also never seemed to manage to actually "save" any of its prior groups of alleged criminals? Hmm.]

I have yet to hear anyone has succeeded in accessing any of said copies. So. Perhaps.

[...But he doesn't really want to get corrupted into a lizard person or whatever, so,] I have zero desire to live in that unstable world again.
chimericalclaw: (a: i see)

[personal profile] chimericalclaw 2025-02-27 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
[That's a stronger sentiment than most he's heard from Octavian, even worded obliquely as it is. He sits back, arms folded over his chest, and raises his eyebrows with some surprised curiosity.]

Was it that awful for you?

[Part of him wonders how that "glitching" he's heard of could even affect the ghost, given his apparent ability to become all but immune to danger. The other part recognizes that this place no doubt has its way of directly affecting anyone it's brought here, regardless of their current state—and is curious as to the particulars.]
