TEST DRIVE MEME #12

Test Drive Meme #12
Welcome to Expiation, a pan-fandom adventure game with elements of fantasy, science fiction, and some subtle horror.

THE STORY SO FAR (click to expand!)
-Characters have arrived in Expiation, a seemingly idyllic fantasy world where they have been told they will be judged and sentenced for crimes they were charged with upon arrival.

-Every two months, several characters are chosen for sentencing, where they’re brought to the Courthouse (formerly City Hall) and told to perform a task related to their assigned crime. Their only contact at the Courthouse is a mysterious and long-suffering man called Jerry.

-Over time, characters have begun to realize that not all is as it seems in Expiation: as it turns out, the entire world is a simulation that seems to be run by an artificial intelligence. This AI claims that its purpose, and thus the purpose of Expiation, is rehabilitating the Chosen after their crimes.

-In September 2024, that AI needed to be reset as a consequence of some catastrophic systems failures. So far, there has been no downside to this reset–but the AI has also been strangely absent since then.

-In November 2024, a strange event overtook Aldrip and turned it into a week-long eternal night where technology ceased to work. During this time, the simulation that generates Expiation seemed to malfunction, causing a strange crack to appear in the surroundings. Through this crack, characters were able to see some sort of metal enclosure. They could reach a hand in, but little more than that. This crack has disappeared, for now, but what it means for Aldrip's future remains to be seen.

TDM top-levels are open to all, whether you are already in-game or not. New characters, please put TDM in your subject header so we’ll know you’re trying things out! You can also put your top-level in the TDM DIRECTORY at the bottom of the post. New folks are welcome and encouraged to use TDM threads as samples in their application. Current players may use TDM threads as part of their AC proofs.

The missile toads can be found throughout the rest of the month of December, and there will be one prompt that is during the Solstice.

You can view our CALENDAR to keep important dates in mind. RESERVES open on December 21 and APPLICATIONS will open on December 24. After this, applications will next open in February 2024.

**REMINDER ON NEW CANONS AND CANON UPDATING**

A note about spoilers. There are a lot of canons coming out right now that players are inevitably interested. This is good! However, we’d like to remind you that we have an app wait time of two months for new canons and one month for new material, ie canon updates.

In addition to the wait times, we request that any players (and potential players!) be sensitive about spoilers. Warning for spoilers is encouraged; you can even put spoiler content behind a details tag or block it out in text. Additionally, please do not use spoiler icons in top-levels or top comments, and ask before including spoiler content (including icons) when tagging out. Thank you!

For those who may not know how to do a details tag, we'll give you a handy-dandy code!

Arrival

You wake.

Or…you think you do.

The first thing you notice is…well, darkness, even when your eyes are open. Reaching out, you realize that you’re in a very narrowly enclosed space. You feel as if you’re probably standing up. Beyond that…well, it’s impossible to tell…

It’s a strange awakening that greets new Chosen this month: they arrived encased in coffins. Most of these, they’ll be able to open themselves. It’s possible that some of them may get a little stuck, though, meaning they’ll need some help from the outside. These coffins begin to appear in the sidewalks and open spaces of Aldrip overnight, appearing at random, and they’re all standing upright. Huh, it’s almost like they’re a specific reference or something. For an added festive touch, they’re adorned with seasonal bows and may even have wrapping paper prints on them.

Welcome to Aldrip?

JUST HEAR THOSE DRY BONES JINGLING [missile toads]

The holiday season has come to Aldrip, bringing with it all manner of festive cheer! Buildings are adorned with decorations and festive depictions. Skeletal Santa and his eight zombie reindeer, Frosty the Lavaman, Rudolph with menacing red eyes, glowing with a strangely haunting light… What, isn’t that just the normal holiday fare? Don’t your yuletide decorations spontaneously burst into flames, or grow terrifyingly sharp teeth?

Doesn’t your mistletoe come with amphibians?

That’s right: they’re back. Mistletoe has appeared throughout the city, and with it comes a seasonal infestation of missile toads. These nefarious creatures will do anything they can to get Chosen stuck under their namesake foliage, even shooting sticky substances at their feet to trap them! This substance only seems to disappear when the missile toads’ demands are met. They’ll pelt you with a little scrap of paper to tell you what those demands are, one of the following three:
”Now kiss!” Need we say more? The type of kiss required is up to you. Pucker up!
”Now fight!” Feisty little fellas, aren’t they? These toads want a show, and they won’t be satisfied until someone walks away sporting bruises.
”Now talk!” Maybe the physical stuff is too easy. This toady audience wants to hear secrets–the juicier the better! Whether one participant or both needs to confess something is up to you, as is the severity of the secret.

These creatures plague Aldrip through the end of December, but given the questions we’ve gotten about how to use them (you know who you are), this might not be the last we’ve seen of them…

The Winter Solstice

Aldrip’s traditional Solstice feast is set to happen just after the longest night of the year, and what a feast it’s shaping up to be! Even before the Solstice itself, the town is decked out with twinkling lights and snowy decorations. In the daytime, there will be snowy fun and games: snowball fights, ice sculpting, snow fortress building, and wintery sports like ice skating. Even the locals seem to be put in a better mood!

However, Aldrip’s tradition comes with an attached superstition. The locals say that all must be indoors the night of the Solstice itself, beginning at sundown on December 21st. Tricks and misfortune await anyone outside when the dark and the cold sets in, so they say!

But then again, nothing really happened last year, so it should be fine. Right?

Well…

Any Chosen who wish to test their luck will find misfortune awaiting them in the form of snowmen patrolling the streets. These snowmen are on the lookout for any creatures out of bed, and beware–if they see you, you’ll be pelted with snowballs until you’re out of sight. Can they be snuck past? Sure, probably. They’re just snowmen, after all. You’d be right to try sneaking, too: anyone hit by one of their snowballs will find their body slowly turning to ice. Brr! Oh, and, because we’re sure someone is going to ask: the snowmen can be melted, destroyed, fought, or otherwise messed with. They melt down just to ordinary water.

Anyway, the icy affliction can only be melted by a show of affection (platonic, friendly, romantic, etc), either by the affected Chosen or toward them. It can be as simple as a funny joke or sweet story, or as complicated as you wish, but it must be genuine. The longer the afflicted Chosen goes without, the more their body turns to ice–eventually, they may become one of the ice sculptures on display around town! They can still be turned back if it comes to this point, but obviously they’ll be at the mercy of someone else’s gesture of affection, as they will be unable to move. Oh, and they’ll probably need some time to warm up.

The snowmen disappear at first light after the Solstice, and the feast begins as soon as people are able to leave their homes once more. All will be able to enjoy the festivities in peace at this point…well, except for the missile toads. They’ll still be around for the rest of the month.

Wildcard Make your own fun! Just because it’s not in the prompts doesn’t mean it’s not possible. Have at it! Go crazy! Try not to break anything (too much)!

[ If anything, Peter's excitement only ignites a spark of excitement in Heimerdinger as well. ]

Oh-ho, lad, you didn't mention you were a man of science!

[ He laughs heartily, then plucks a long blond hair from his head, and leaps off of the chair to go rummage around in the drawers of the nearby desk before emerging with a small glass vial, which he drops the hair into and then stoppers with a cork. ]

I've never thought to run any tests on my own genetics... I'd be curious myself to see what you can find. Why don't I hold onto this for you, and you can come back for it once you are in an outfit with pockets?

Was the missile launched at the council building not payback enough!??!

Ugh why did he have to chuckle like that, and why were they all so cheerful and upbeat all the time. This was the reason why she didn't talk to other Yordle other than when she absolutely had to, and well when it was her uncle, or her parents.

"Yeah, places like this. What's it called anyway?"

Learning back a little Vex let the shadow catch her and lift her as she sat her feet just off of the ground. She was tired of standing.

"Because it's magic, but everyone wants it all to be flashy and colorful so they don't think about the really cool things like this. It was all because of that black mist. And usually he does whatever I ask."

Thanks for the tip, genius.

[That's what he's trying!! It's just easier said than done. Maybe because of all the huffing and grunting he's doing, Scott nearly falls on his ass once more, only managing to catch himself by grabbing Venti's hand. Oh great, now he owes him one!! Maybe he should've just fallen, but it was instinctual to grab onto him.]

Does it just come naturally to you? [Scott asks, mood still sour, but approximately 10% less bitchy because he's holding onto Venti and using him as a balance board.] Because you're making it sound like that.

[It's an insufficient and vague answer for A2. And possibly Pod, but they aren't saying anything.

The concept of love was not foreign to androids, though to A2 it felt as ephemeral as air and difficult to conceptualize. Emotions were prohibited. However-

She had loved her teammates, and she had loved the Resistance members who died in her stead. And 9S too, in the strange and muddy way that 2B's memories and her own resolve to save him had brought on. She had loved the world, despite the agonies it had enacted on her. But the love this girl speaks of is of a different sort.]

Not quite? What does that mean?

[She is oddly curious to be so intimidating and quiet.]

[ There is not much good to be said to come out of Viktor's disability, indeed. But if nothing else, it makes it easier for Heimerdinger to keep pace with him. ]

Jinx, yes... The girl has a bright mind. If only things could have been different. It would have been nice to bend her passions towards progress instead of destruction.

[ Working closely with Ekko and Powder towards recreating the anomaly in the alternate Zaun only served to highlight for Heimerdinger just how much potential was squandered in their proper timeline. And Viktor has a point. Perhaps it isn't too late to have some influence over this version of the girl. Especially if Ekko is able to be a part of instilling some change in her. ]

We shall have to see what we can do to join our efforts. Either upon your return to Runeterra, or perhaps more importantly, here and now in this simulation.

Heimerdinger did try to look on the bright side of life, most of the time, it's true. However when Vex brings up magic, he can't help but throw a sideways glance towards the shadow, seeming a bit more wary of both her and it. He's not going to say anything about it, though. Not unless it tries anything.

Well, yeah, I'm... I'm there, for sure I'm there. I was going to go to MTI and everything-- wait, you probably don't know what MIT is, well, think of this big university known for science. It's pretty cool. So, here, we have a club for STEM, and some of us know how to deal with DNA better--, really?

(he is just giving him the hair!!! amazing. peter just spoke, spoke, spoke, he's rambling and glad to be here, until he laughs a little, patting his suit.)

... Right. I'll definitely be back.

Ah, yes! I used to be the dean of a similarly science-focused university in Piltover! Once I am more settled in town, perhaps I could lend a hand with this club of yours.

[ Maybe it's the boy's youth, or maybe it's his enthusiasm, but the sight of him patting his suit for nonexistent pockets is just so charming that Heimerdinger can't help but chuckle. ]

Don't you worry about it. I will keep it here, with your name on it. And, if the sample gets to be too old to be viable, well... [ He runs a hand through his fluffy hair. ] ...There's plenty more where that came from!

That would be cool, I think you would like everyone.

(he says, with no proof, no evidence, nothing, just a feeling and a dream. there's a chuckle that escapes him too, considering the fact that true, it's not like it's a hard task to find a hair on this fluffy creature.)

Right, thanks! Ah, right, you wanted to know what's out there, right? Well, I'm patrolling, so just a few snowmen zombie-type things, aside from the... Zombiepart and the biting, because they don't really have any teeth? Still haven't ran into anyone who out, but I can hear around here, so it's fine.

[ Oh, he is steaming, hopping mad, now. Not just at Jinx, but at Officer Kiramman, too, apparently! And just in general about how far into madness things seem to have descended without him there to guide the hand of the council!!

He is pacing in his inn room, trying to calm his fury enough to type back a reply. ]

If Officer Kiramman is also guilty of weaponizing toxic gas against the undercity, that is something I also do not approve of, and I will be having words with her about it when next I see her. But an eye for an eye is no way to solve a conflict!

[ Ah, yes. Back on track, back to the subject at hand. Heimerdinger looks at Peter curiously. ]

Ah, I see. Do you have some sort of sensor array up in order to be able to audibly monitor the area?

[ Leaping to the assumption that when he says he can "hear around here," he is speaking of some sort of technological ability to do so. ]
chimericalclaw: (a: fact)

[personal profile] chimericalclaw 2024-12-17 08:26 pm (UTC)(link)
[He shrugs one shoulder apologetically.]

That's the problem, I'm afraid. We don't have the finer details to share, and I have no solid answer for that question. The entity maintaining this world went silent after limited communication, and the only other contact with something that seems to know anything worthwhile has been for the purposes of accusing us of crimes and assigning punishment.

[ Yeah, okay, maybe, but there very easily could have been a technological explanation for the wall-crawling, too. Heimerdinger assumes most people don't go around wearing head-to-toe spandex because they think it's fashionable. ]

Fascinating. You mean to say that you have a natural ability for long range sensory perception?!

[ He's heard of some Vastaya with similar abilities, but from all appearances, Peter looks like a perfectly normal human teenager. ]

Vex didn't seem to react to wariness, most Yordles didn't really get her and seemed to think that she was something of an anomaly; which she was but it was because she understood how pointless everything was.

"You don't know either huh? Maybe it doesn't have one."

Guess everyone got here in a coffin, if it weren't for the festive decorations this would be her kind of place.

"Not that it really matters, I'm sure someone will show up and go on and on about it. Or have some big speech about why we're here."

[He holds back a sigh, a faint frown still on his face as he answers. At least the lad seems to be physically alright, and not too shaken up.]

The city is called Aldrip, but I don't think that will mean anything to you.

[How best to put this? It's been a while since he had a real conversation with someone so young.]

I'm afraid we're trapped in a world separate from our own. We're still trying to figure out how it all works, and how to get home.

I mean, it's not super long, and it isn't really natural, humans aren't born like that, but, pretty much, yeah, my senses are better than most, so yeah.

(he could be wearing the nanites, which would make heimer even more justified, but no, he's just in a normal spider-man suit this time around, he left his other suit charging. hopefully it doesn't suck all the power in aldrip.

since the mask isn't the super technological one either, he can let heimer take a look at how dark the lenses are.)

Should probably have opened with that, uh, so, hi, I'm one of the people in Aldrip who got bit by a radioactive spider in our respective worlds and now can do pretty much the same stuff. Usually, we don't come out with our faces or anything, but since some people know us and there aren't many Chosen to blend and stuff, so we get identified super quick, so yeah.

[ .. huh.

Most people would likely react with something a little stronger than just 'huh' upon seeing a closed coffin with a voice yelling from the inside like that.. But all Ange feels is that little internal 'huh', and she blinks very calmly as she approaches the coffin all the sound is coming from. ]

That depends.

[ The voice coming from outside the coffin sounds like a teenage girl, but there's something odd about it. Her voice is.. weirdly flat. It's hard to detect any particular emotion in it at all, other than perhaps something along the lines of boredom. ]

Are you some sort of monster stuck in there?

(dummy. he's quick to remove his coat, it's warm from all the use, and drape around her shoulders to keep her from losing more heat. it's fine, he's totally fine. he goes into the new york snow in spandex, so he'll definitely live through this, too.)

... Yes. We have failed the Undercity in many ways.

[ he takes this particular failure incredibly hard — had back home, and does so here, too, perhaps even more so since being quite thoroughly berated about it all by an angry and bitter silco.

still; he is about to nod, mind busily thinking of how they might convince jinx to allow for some sort of formal (or informal) lessons, when something in the professor's words make him stumble, his tight grip on his crutch the only thing that stops him from falling over entirely.
]

What? [ he blinks not unlike an owl, head swiveling to look at heimerdinger. ] My... return? But sir, [ he starts, and realises immediately that he is about to argue about his own death which makes the situation somewhat surreal. even so, he keeps going, voice slightly strained, ]
