[The other Dante looks over at Yuri, clock face as unreadable as the real deal.]
< I told you. I had to get their attention. My attention. If it makes you feel better, I didn't aim for anything vital. It'll just hurt, and a little pain isn't anything new. >
[Dante--the real one--pushes through the pain to get to their feet. Like their doppelganger said, pain isn't anything new for them. Not an old friend, but not an unexpected guest, either.]
< And a gun is the best you could come up with? >
< ...The "bigwigs" of the City. They're awful, aren't they? Treating their employees as if they were disposable, sitting back as they watch people's lives become a living hell. It's frightening to think we might be just as bad as them, isn't it? That all it would take is the right memory returning and... >
[The doppelganger points the gun in Yuri's direction, but doesn't fire, doesn't even aim. A demonstration, nothing more.]
[Yuri stares down at the barrel of the gun completely undeterred. Not the first time he's gotten the semblance of a death threat, and this wouldn't be the last time either.]
Sorry, but that's still the Boss you're threatening here. And right now, the way you're talking pisses me off.
[Who is the "you" he's talking about here? Because right now, he's glaring daggers at both of them. His head tilts towards the direction of the actual Dante with a glare just as stern but less murderous.]
I don't give a rat's ass about past memories and the like. Do you really think the person you are right now would disappear just because your past would come back? You're way stronger than that. And if you're not - I won't take a beating lying down, not even when it's coming from you. You can't kill me that easily.
[There's some truth in Yuri's words. How many times have they tried to let the Sinners know that their pasts don't determine their futures? Who is to say that that can't be the case for them too?
And yet... he says all this without knowing where they're from. The things the City asks of its people, the ways it beats the kind heart out of its people. The violence, the cruelty, the apathy, the sorrow.
As if it knows what they're thinking, their doppelganger lowers the gun and scoffs.]
< Of course I can't. I couldn't even use a gun before I got here, how could I fight a swordsman? It isn't about the threat, Yuri. It's about the sins that can't be taken back. This place, despite what everyone else has said, despite the things I've seen so far, is still a kinder world than my own. >
[Yeah, Yuri figured as much — the reflections he saw at the “fun”house weren’t pleasant at all. They were painfully grotesque, even. It’s not particularly the kind of world that he has an interest in visiting, ever.]
But we’re not in that world right now, are we? In fact, wouldn’t that just make the things you’ve done more justifiable? If that world has forced you to become someone so wretched, then that’s not your fault. The fault lies on the bigwigs that sit on top.
[Who knows which Dante he’s talking to at this point? Maybe he’s talking to both of them. Maybe Yuri doesn’t see a difference between the two.]
Maybe you do have something unforgivable in the past. I have some skeletons in my closet too. So what are you going to do about it?
[The false Dante's answer comes immediately, its gaze fixed on Dante, who can't bring themselves to move.
Repent for what?
For something they can't remember? For something that may not have been their fault? For something that might be more justifiable, just to survive in "that crapsack world bereft of hope or peace."
"Justifiable."
"Unforgivable."
Their vision goes black as they block out their sight.]

< Yuri. Cut it down. ...Please. >
