[ saves a bit of explanation, then, even if his talent might come off less impressive as a result. the term "materia" flickers with vague recognition in his mind, as if he'd heard someone mention it once in passing, but he can't quite put a name to who it might have been. maybe he's imagining it.
riku backs up a few steps, stretching his arms as if to get the mp flowing. ]
It's just a trick, so you don't have to act impressed or anything. [ mild amusement, since sephiroth really didn't seem the type to bother. ] Thanks for helping, either way.
[ he holds out one hand, muttering a quiet fira. a few orbs of purple fire dance over his palm before riku flickers them between his fingers as if they were a street magician's cards. he then throws them lightly into the air, where each splits into smaller wisps, before calling thunder to strike each one with a weak jolt.
the result is the dark flames scattering like tiny fireworks or stars, harmless but pretty against the night sky. ]
[ fira, he says, and sephiroth knows that term. spells are sorted into strength levels in normal materia-users, based on the materia itself and the capability of the spellcaster. fira is one of the levels of a fire materia. that's.. interesting.
he's distracted from any polite response he might give to the thanks, though, as the other teen creates his fire spell, then turns it into.. something else. something surprisingly lovely.
it's a small thing to riku, maybe, but sephiroth is left staring at the fading flickers of light, eyes wide and slit pupils dilated nearly round with surprise and pleasure. there's a muted sense of wonder in his expression as he finally seems to realize he's been silent too long, glance dropping once more to riku. ] .. I didn't know magic could do that. [ he's only ever used his magic to kill. he can make a forest into cinders or turn a village into a frozen wasteland, but.. he's never, never once used it just to create something pretty. he's never thought to. he'd never even known it could be used like that. ]
[ it's hard to not be a little pleased with himself at sephiroth's reaction. riku waits patiently, giving time for sephiroth to speak before responding. ]
I wasn't very good with magic, at first.
[ he'd been able to use a few wild spells, cast in moments of desperation, the feeling of his energy being drained through each simple blizzard or raging dark firaga a foreign and uncomfortable sensation. ]
It started coming more naturally, once I got used to it. I wanted to use spells that were accurate, but it was hard to practice with powerful magic. So I tested a few smaller spells like that.
[ he looks a bit wistful, for a moment. ]
Friends of mine are pretty good with light magic, but I've never been able to get a handle on it. This is as close as I got.
[ he remembers his first magic lessons, too. it comes more naturally to him than it does to other people in his world, but that doesn't mean he hadn't made mistakes. he hadn't learned like this, though, making sparklers out of fire spells. to be fair, the professor would have scoffed at something like this. while it shows deftness and creativity, hojo had been more interested in seeing where his limits lay. ]
I understand, I think, [ he agrees a few moments later. ] It can be difficult to strike a specific target with a firaga without a great deal of collateral damage in the process. [ best, then, to learn with a simple fire first. ] I'm afraid that I'm not familiar with light magic, though. Is it considered elemental?
[ his expression.. changes when he talks about his friends, though. maybe sephiroth's making a misstep by keeping them on this subject? normal human behavior is so difficult to parse out at times, even after his weeks with glenn and the others. ]
[ once again, riku blinks in surprise, nodding slowly in agreement with sephiroth's assessment. ]
That's exactly it, yeah. I wanted to make my firagas track their target.
[ it's second nature to him now, casting a dark firaga through his keyblade and having the fireballs chase down a wayward heartless or several. he learned on the fly, no true mentor to really tell him off for experimenting with magic and emulating his enemies.
the formality of the subject was fine, honestly, riku kind of appreciative of this other young man swerving around the sentimental route. ]
Light magic isn't elemental like most spells, but it has its opposite in dark. [ there's more to say about that relationship, but that's for another time, perhaps. ] They're different to the others, more... innate, I think.
