There are several scenarios where removing a limb will do you a favor. You might have fallen into a ditch, twisting your leg into unnatural position where your bone forces its way through your skin. Maybe you got trampled by horse and wagon, or had the misfortune to be at the wrong end of a canon fire. Either way, in a heat of battle where every second matters you have to be prepared to do whatever you must to survive. Even leaving dead weight behind.
