Its main point is to help you figure out what you can and cannot do, how to best interact with any given terrain, the best and worst matches for your fighting partners and enemies, how to deal with unexpected situations, and so on. In a nutshell: it's a lot of things that one'd consider common sense, except that you usually don't end up thinking about them yourself until it's already too late.
