{EVENT #1} ADVERSITY 131425.845119

THUS DO WE HUNGER

MOD NOTES:

Welcome to the first event!

Please direct any questions to the corresponding comment below. Note that characters can be involved in multiple prompts (whether you choose to thread that out or not), and that character decisions and actions taken on these prompts will affect future events, storylines, and relationships with other peoples of Expiation.

In two weeks from this event, the moderator team will be posting a poll on the OOC community that will allow players to share what actions their characters took and two weeks after that, there will be an announcement made sharing said results, how those actions have impacted the state of the world, the game's story, what information can be used ICly, and so on.

The various prompts are, of course, optional, so you're not required to travel to Rumpitur if you don't wish to. You're not required to help the locals or other Chosen during the food shortage. There is an option to simply not be involved, and that too can have potential repercussions on the future of the game's overarching story and other characters.

WE'RE STARVING HERE!

HOW TO REPAIR A REFRIGERATOR 101

Do you remember the fishing tournament where a variety of locals and Chosen alike submitted a bunch of fish for a very modest and unimpressive wooden sculpture? Well... about that...

Aldrip's refrigeration has catastrophically failed and as a result, the food stores that the locals have been keeping are now on the verge of total and utter collapse. The townspeople are in an absolute uproar. According to them, this has never happened before and though they would normally just pray to Those Who Were There for a resolution, they kind of need something immediate. Otherwise, all residents of Aldrip are facing the very real threat of starvation.

The good news is that you can help!

The more handy of the Aldrip townsfolk are going to get right to work on repairing the refrigeration units. At present, the only units that exist belong to those who are making food and providing them to the townspeople. This means people like the tavern keepers, the inn, bakers, and other miscellaneous cooks, are those who possess and control these refrigeration units. If you've got some handyman skills, put them to work, though be aware that working on repairing the technological malfunction might just be an electrifying experience. Literally.

THE ALTERNATIVE TO COOKING MAMA

There sure has been a lot of opportunities to cook, but now Aldrip needs cooks and would-be cooks like never before!

Those not necessarily good with repair work might find themselves better suited for hunting the local wildlife, whether that's on the meadowland plains or taking, yet again, a fishing pole into hand. A good deal of the meat, vegetables, and fruit that was already preserved has spoiled and will need to be replaced hastily if people want to continue eating.

With bodies going to retrieve replacement food, there's suddenly an open and demand for people who either already have experience with cooking or just really want to learn. There's no better way to learn than some truly hands-on experience. For those with some cooking in their background, even if it's simple at its best, the kitchens are free and available. You might not have your choice cuts of meat or whatever else you might be accustomed to preparing, but fortunately the dried spices and herbs aren't impacted by the food shortage. Consider making something flavourful or just really spicy. (Alphen, we're looking at you.)

If you haven't cooked before and you're one of those who's just dying to learn, pair up with a buddy in the kitchen, or fumble along. Beggars can't be choosers, after all, and we're facing a crisis. Maybe the threat of having no food will encourage people to try whatever you make, no matter how black, crispy brown it might turn out.

The more innovative and creative individuals may find a way to dry / dehydrate anything caught or harvested. Or we can just have a huge impromptu grilling adventure where people hold raw meat over fire. Your choice!

WE'RE OFF TO SEE... THE NAGA?

WE COME IN PEACE

Aldrip is hardly the only settlement on the continent of Expiation and though the various peoples of these settlements can often stick within their own, when times are hard and adversity encroaches on livelihood, they're not against seeking the aid of others. Some of the more well-travelled of the Aldrip locals are planning an expedition to visit Rumpitur, an impressively-sized village on a peninsula to the east of Aldrip.

They are ready and willing to take all volunteers who are interested in accompanying them to barter for food and other potentially needed supplies. The visit to Rumpitur will require travel through the Pessiria Forest, a thick veil of trees that one can be easily lost in, but if everyone's together, then it shouldn't be an issue.

Consider joining the expedition and getting to know some of Expiation's other peoples.

Rumpitur is home to a race of naga-like people with scaled features, tails, sharp teeth, and forked tongues. Their way of life is considerably more simple in comparison to some of Aldrip's fancier advancements. They are skilled combatants and a fishing people, whose diet primarily consists of seafood. In Rumpitur, one may take note of their many-in-number stone constructs, depicting a notable and perhaps significant naga.

Although they may seem intimidating at first glance and can have terse ways of speaking, they are amicable enough and will be willing to do business with Aldrip and her citizens.

OR MAYBE WE DON'T

The visit from Aldrip, which is a rare occurrence indeed, results in much confusion for the Rumpiturian people, and this may or may not be considered a blessing to those who could be more unscrupulous in nature.

Although the visit to Rumpitur is meant to be one of peace, locals of Aldrip and the Chosen alike have the opportunity to steal supplies from the people. If they choose to do this, they may find that there are no immediate repercussions for this course of action. The likelihood is that this visit has caught the Rumpiturians so off-guard that they're not expecting to be robbed. Of course, how this will impact things in the future remains to be seen...

Individuals may grab as much as they can carry, depending on what they've brought with them. The locals of Aldrip who planned this expedition provided convenient-to-carry containers that can be filled with anything retrieved from the village and her kind. Larger containers will require at least two people to carry when filled, so perhaps you're inclined to work with a partner-in-crime. Just remember that for every action, there's a consequence, even if you're not seeing it right away!

Rumpitur will not notice that they are missing inventory until well after Aldrip has left and travels back through the forest to town, so no one need fear the chasing and hissing of snakes into Pessiria.

Probably.

HOLD ONTO YOUR VALUABLES

IT'S NOT REAL... RIGHT?

Those who've decided to brave the forest will find on their adventure to Rumpitur that it's rather straight forward and proceeds without incident.

The sky above the trees is a difficult thing to see, blocked out by the way the evergreens stretch and imposingly tower above. At times light may scatter through various openings in branches, but it is a largely darker atmosphere, and at night requires the assistance of candlelight or related.

Travellers with the courage to make way through the forest with the others may hear occasional snaps, cracks, whispers, and more enigmatic sounds that are difficult to justify with logic. Of course, whether this is all in the head or something truly more sinister at play is up for debate. Despite the strange occurrences that one may experience, no members of the Chosen will find themselves harmed or otherwise physically disturbed initially. That said, some may later find themselves haunted by strange dreams and visions of the forest in the future if they are especially sensitive to such things.

Were those sounds real? Were you just hearing things? It's probably wisest not to investigate further. At least, maybe not now...

COUNT YOUR NUMBERS

Aldrip has a great many stories about Pessiria Forest and many of the other towns, landmarks, settlements, and people scattered across the continent. Most of these stories seem to depict folklore or a certain mythological feeling about them, implying that many of the locals don't truly believe in any of the more macabre tales. Pessiria Forest has no shortage of poetry and song that pertains to its supposedly 'holy' grounds and mysterious happenstances.

There are several alleged accounts about people having gone missing in the forest, due to how complicated it is to navigate by one's self. The more people travelling together, the safer it is purported to be.

Before leaving for Rumpitur, heads have been counted to ensure that wherever they start is also where they end up, however, for the more observant, one may find that the returning party is short of a few heads. Maybe some of them stayed behind to further the diplomatic efforts with the Rumpiturians. Maybe they're going to catch up later. Maybe they took a different pathway through the forest with some of their mates. Maybe there's something more untoward going on.

If this is brought up to the locals, the leaders of the expedition will warily make note of it and conduct their own investigation. At least, they say they will. Either way, it's suspicious no matter how you may turn it. Perhaps put heads together with another and see if you're just miscounting.

Galaxia | Sailor Moon

A - WE'RE OFF TO SEE... THE NAGA?

[Galaxia accompanied the expedition mostly because she wanted to explore more of the land, and see what's out there. She can't leave anyway (she tried), so she might as well see if there's anything interesting around. This place isn't any worse than her home planet at least.

The people of Rumpitur are ...

Not super interesting. Not incredibly out of the ordinary, but also not super common. What is interesting is there being more than one type of people on the planet. That is uncommon. Most worlds are full of humans or full of something else.

She still scoffs while looking at one, who may or may not have gotten offended by her reaction (or maybe they were just taken off guard?), but Galaxia doesn't seem to notice or care.

Instead she moves towards where one has some weapons and picks up a sword. Just to look at it, as she's not really one to use weapons. (She's never needed to). Though she does glance from the weapon in her hands to one of the naga considering what it might be like to just stab one.
]

B - HOLD ONTO YOUR VALUABLES

[There is something about the forest, the stories have that much right, though Galaxia isn't sure she'd agree with the so-called 'holy' grounds aspect of it. Only one place is truly holy and this isn't it. But it does have something ...

If only she could tell what that is. While she can sense somethings, she's unfortunately not all seeing. This also extends to the possibility of getting lost, though she's arrogant enough to believe she'll find her way.

The sounds however ... She's not afraid, but they are unsettling in a way. At one noise she stops to spin around, peering through the dark to hopefully find the source.
]

Who goes there?

[If it comes down to it, she'll just light the whole forest on fire. That will get rid of the strange sounds.]

C - WILDCARD

Yeah...I don't know if it was just the sounds getting to me, but I really wanted to get out of there. [The whispers did a number on his lingering paranoia and that evoked some Bad Memories™, even without anything setting off Danger Sense.] If they're out there feeling the same way and don't stay in one place for the night, that raises the odds of them getting hurt or ending up farther away from help.

[In some ways, this is almost worse than summer camp. Emotionally it's nowhere near as bad, of course...but mentally? Logically? He has no idea what happened to the missing villagers, or where they got separated, or even if they disappeared in a group or one at a time. At least last time he could be told right away if anyone had been hurt and if they were okay. At least he knew that Kacchan had been kidnapped--

His body language suddenly gets a lot more tense.]

[She just nods. Yeah, that makes sense. Anything can seem normal after being around it long enough. She just hopes she doesn't have to spend that long in the forest itself.]

Something about it gives me a bad feeling, but I guess that's just because I'm not used to it yet, huh?

[It just reminds her of the voices that would lure people into Tartarus, that's all. She takes a breath and forces it out of her mind by drawing another smile to her face.]

How long did it take you to get used to this kind of stuff, mister?
orphne: (Kotone 253)

[personal profile] orphne 2023-03-20 12:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh!

[Oh, that's a way more normal response than she was expecting, and it startles her enough with its mundanity that she can't help but laugh. And then she realizes that might be seen as rude and quickly waves her hands.]

Sorry! Sorry, I'm not laughing at you. It's just, it sounds really normal compared to some of the crazy stuff people have told me here. And you don't really look like a cop...

[In fairness, the only cop she spent any amount of time with was a very stern-looking man who helped her return lost dogs, lost pocket watches, and also sold her protective gear and weapons. Normal cop stuff.]

[She hums at him, satisfied enough that at least he's admitting it. It's hard, she knows that -- hell, if their positions were reversed, she might do the same thing. But they're not, and she doesn't know how to Not Care about her friends.]

Yeah, you were really stubborn about it back then... I get it, though. In Cooking Club, I had to keep an eye on Fuuka, too, but sometimes it was nice to just do it myself without worrying! I'm sure it'll turn out good now, though.

[So what she's saying is: thanks for trusting her enough not to hover over her and just let her be. But speaking of Cooking Club... she refuses to let herself get sad about a lack of other SEES members, putting that right into that same box labeled Later to instead ask,] So, have you made any friends here?

[Questions will continue until Shinji starts befriending people-]
orphne: (Kotone 267)

[personal profile] orphne 2023-03-20 12:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Mmhm. It sounded like... something calling us.

[At least to her, the comparison to the people who wandered into Tartarus is impossible not to make. There was always a time limit to how long someone could safely stay there, but without Theo to call her and warn her when someone had gotten lost, she has no way of knowing how long, exactly, they have left.

She can't miss the way he tenses up, though, and she tilts her head with some concern as she reaches out to touch his elbow.]

Hey, you okay?
orphne: (Kotone 26)

[personal profile] orphne 2023-03-20 12:13 pm (UTC)(link)
You didn't...?

[She frowns at that, turning back to glance at him even as he says to keep eyes ahead. They hadn't really spoken, so she doesn't know anything about him, but...]

I know I heard something. It sounded like someone trying to get my attention. You didn't hear that...?

[He looks way too serious to play a mean trick like that on her, after all, which makes the presence of the whispers... really worrying. She'd gotten used to Pharos showing up in the middle of the night to deliver cryptic warnings, but Pharos isn't around anymore. The only other time she's heard these kinds of strange voices are in Tartarus, and that never ended well.]

[As much as he wants to be irritated at how damn lazy this guy seems to be --they're in the midst of some real trouble, and he's just snoozing in the grass? seriously?-- Noel...can't help but envy him a bit, too. As nice as the people here have been, at least on the surface, they haven't exactly done much to earn his trust, and yet here he is putting in work for them while this other guy takes a damn nap.

So he can't be too annoyed. It takes a level of entitlement to just hang out at a time like this, but...it's a little like self-preservation, too.]

Another hour, maybe? I'm sure something else on the buffet line will be ready way before this.

[Does he even know what a buffet is? Jury's out, but that's just how he talks, so I'm going with it.]

[Gods, there's something about the way she says that...he can't help a bit of a smile at how familiar that tone is.]

Can't have that, can we?

[And since she wastes no time getting involved, neither does he: swords in hand, he rushes forward to block another wolf --looks like the alpha, maybe-- as it tries to charge and attack.]

Let's go!

[It's two on five, now. He's seen way, way worse odds.]
oracledriven: (pushing me to not forget them)

[personal profile] oracledriven 2023-03-20 02:07 pm (UTC)(link)
[It might be small in comparison to some other things, but somehow, it feels pretty important to Noel. Maybe because their overall predicament is so personal, for him -- food was never exactly plentiful in the Farseer settlement, and as their numbers dwindled, so, too, did the various types of food available. Hunting and eating monsters was never exactly fun, but it was pretty much all they had left, and no one should have to live that way. So if he can help at all...

Well. Let's just say that watching the wind blow all that away would have been frustrating.]

... Right. [One thing at a time. As much as he's lived through, it doesn't seem like he's learned much in the way of patience. He still rushes ahead, tries to do everything all at once. Maybe if he had slowed down and thought more in the first place, he would have tied the rack down before setting about the rest of the work. But all he can do now is learn from it -- that, and hold the rack as she looks for something heavy to weigh it down with.]

Thanks for your help. [And the reminder.] Aerith, right?

[He manages a snort at that. Not because it's funny, but because he relates.]

Can't say I would do any different, honestly.

[Sounds a little bit like they both have experience with going hungry. He doesn't say as much, doesn't ask -- it's not his business and it's not the top thing most people want to talk about. He just starts tying the bottom of the rack to the rocks.]

Let's just try to keep 'em clean for now, alright? At least until they dry out.

Aerith Gainsborough | FFVIIR

01. How to NOT Repair a Refrigerator
[She's not inclined to start saying that she knows anything about repairing anything. That said, it doesn't mean she's not inclined to help. This is Aerith. For her to not be involved in everything she can get involved in would be terribly unlike her.

Since she's not the one working on the refrigeration units herself, however, she's either providing moral and emotional support, or she's crouched right down next to the repairing tools, ready and willing to hand them over.]

How's it coming along? Anything I can do to help?

02. Aerith's Kitchen
[She'll be the first to say that she just doesn't really do much in the way of cooking. Elmyra back home is more the cook, though Aerith can make a pretty great and simple sandwich. Or picnic. And it's not cooking, but she can definitely cut up some fruit.

The lack of this expertise, however, is not enough to stop her from getting involved. That said, chances are that Aerith is inclined to burn whatever she might be working on. She could probably use some assistance.

With a thoughtful frown, she's tipping her pan, staring at the contents that are definitely darker than they should be.]

Hmmmmm, I don't think this is what it's supposed to look like...

03. In the Name of Peace
[The notion of seeing someplace new in this world is so appealing that Aerith is very happy to get involved and even travel through Pessiria to get there, where perhaps other stories would ward others away. Rumpitur looks pretty neat, too, for being a touch swampy, in her opinion. Or rather, waterlogged? Is that the right word for it?

Makes sense when she gets a look at the people, though. They're... snakes, right? And snakes probably can survive in water. She's certainly no expert. It doesn't take her long to share her enthusiasm with them, which is probably a little disorienting to deal with. She simply can't turn off that enthusiasm.

As she's getting to know the Rumpitur locals and trying to make an agreement for securing some food for the trip back, she's removing her bolero jacket and showing it off.]

What do you think? You'd look pretty good in it. I don't have anything else like this, so it's one-of-a-kind, too.

[She probably needs this jacket, though.]

04. You Can't Take That
[As much as it might be the wiser for Aerith to keep her thoughts to herself, that is also just not her. As such, if she catches anyone trying to take something from the Rumpitur people without giving something in return, she's not shy at all about looking on with disapproval.

Folded arms across her chest, she shakes her head with a loud, exasperated sigh.]

Don't you think they probably work hard for what they have? Let's not take that away from them.

05. Reality versus Fiction
[It's a considerably quieter trip back to Aldrip than the one going in. She isn't sure if it's because the evening and night are approaching. Maybe it's because their work in Rumpitur is done. She can't say how successful their endeavours have been either in Aldrip or with the naga people. They probably won't know without some time and patience on their part.

She hope it all goes well, though.

As she's travelling along, even with the others, she finds herself often distracted by things in the distance that she's certain are moving. It's not a constant movement. Just a blur of something she can't make out. So quickly that she isn't sure she's even really seen anything at all.

She sets her hand on the forearm of the person closest to her.]

Hey, have you see anything out there?

[Oh, Shinjiro thinks, so there are people here who are good at diplomacy. It's all he can do to just stand there uncomfortably while Izuku swoops in to give a good... excuse? It's not not true that Shinjiro only came along to protect the less physically inclined from wildlife, that was his big plan, but in the moment it still feels like this little guy is making things up to save his ass from a naga fight.

Pros, cons. He manages to chill out in the interim, at least, slouching somewhat into his jacket collar and shoving his hands in his pockets to look as un-eager for a fight as possible. If he could fade onto the sidelines that would be excellent, but alas... he's here...

He startles slightly when Izuku turns to talk to him, blinking for a moment like, uh, what? Well—]

.....

...Well, I was the one who started it.

[Did he lowkey panic immediately afterwards, yes, they all saw that, but he still shouted at a stranger for no reason, so. Oops. He looks at Izuku for another moment, which means that he kind of frowns at him, neutrally. Very neutrally.]

You didn't have to, so... thanks for stepping in. Next time, I'll get myself out of it. ....Eventually.

[Ah, the rescuer has become the rescued— Shinjiro is a touch surprised to see Astralin stride in so boldly to save his bad manners, after how timid he was when their roles were reversed, but oh - it's the Friendship, isn't it. That's something to mull over later, when there are fewer snake people around casting curious looks in his direction for his outburst.

At least he didn't swear? Or throw a punch? Pros, cons.]

Uh... [When Astralin looks at him the expression on his face is one of uncomfortable surprise, the lingering dread from his interaction with the naga. He's not quaking in his boots or anything, but it's the most troubled he's looked compared to their last meeting.

...But he recovers, the look on his face not so much smoothing out into something relaxed but crumpling in pieces into his standard sulk. He's good. This is fine. He coughs.]

....I'm fine. You didn't have to rush in like that. [.........] But thanks. I thought it was obvious I didn't come for the diplomacy.

[Ha ha. Because he's a grouch, etc. He coughs again, spoiling his brief ghost of a smile, then nods towards the retreating form of the naga who went looking for the seeds. Curiously:]

Uh— oh. .....I thought it was just me.

[That the horses are nervous around or who is agitated around strangers, could be either, could be both. He steps back from the horse, since that doesn't seem to be helping regardless, and then just sort of stands there for a moment. Could he not just sulk by the wall and let the horse come to him that way...

But alright. He holds his hand out, haltingly, trying to look as calm and collected about this approach as he can— which means he winds up looking strained, at best.]

That's weird. Wish we knew who was keeping an eye on us.

.....She tried pretty hard, in the end.

[Compliments to her for that and that only, whew. Shinjiro too doesn't want to start thinking about the rest of their group, and he's about to Casually Ask how Kotone is doing, given her stressed-out bread-kneading, but- ack- the question.

The Question. He's certainly met far more people than he expected to meet? The bar is pretty low, he expected to just be ornery in a corner somewhere and keep a finger on the pulse of whatever Greater Mystery is happening here, but... uh, the free reign of these kitchens... helped.

So. (And he realizes he is taking eons too long to answer a very simple question, but she knows him, so it's not unexpected—)]

Do you wear the same outfit every day?

( (is this how conversations go? apparently it's how marc and the doctor choose to hold conversations).

it's not much of an answer because the doctor's right: marc does normally wear a suit but alas, for all else marc may be and do, he's not yet at the point where he'll willingly wear several days old clothing and appear in public. marc — as ever — opts to mentally ignore the fact that he hasn't exactly answered the doctor's question and hopes that the doctor will ignore it too, because the truth is: marc would much prefer the suit. marc — mr. knight's — identity is thoroughly, entirely wrapped up in the suit (and the mask) that being without one or the other is discomforting in a way that marc would struggle — and be wholly disinclined — to vocalise.

(at least, to anyone that isn't andrea sterman.)

when marc wears the suit and the mask; when marc wears the (for him, very sadly absent) cape and cowl and mask, he's no longer marc spector, he's moon knight, an identity that matters so much more than marc's own.

is it unhealthy to place so much importance on garments of clothing? well, yes, but welcome to marc spector. )

her hands sink into the dough, help kneading it too.)

In a gang? [It's, pretty obvious,] No, I guess I'm not. You're better off not being like me, anyway.

[Like, does Shinjiro have the overall personality type for being in a gang long term... no, but someone with as much pride and authority as Mikey exudes here in the middle of the night in a spooky forest of all places isn't suited to Shinji's sulky isolation, either. He figures. Most people aren't.

Anyway, look at him go...]

Sooner or later you're going to have to go back to sleep, you know.

Oh, wow, self-loathing issues.

(not like he can't relate, but he absolutely will pretend he can't once he plops next to the other. there's a smile on his face, and perhaps being closer will bring attention to just how hollow and devoid of light his eyes are.

something to be said about isolation, but he's never going to say it.)

And leave you to fend off for both of us? Fuck no.

[Ah, that's... Somehow that makes him laugh from how casually Mikey says it, totally without the poor, sad Aragaki-senpai energy he usually winds up faced with when he says that depressing shit. So. He laughs.

....It's not much of a laugh, more of a dry bark of a sound that immediately makes him wince and cough again, but it's a laugh by any definition.]

Yeah, well. I'm not going to pretend otherwise.

[And hey, he has an axe--]

I can take care of both of us. I've got that much pride.

You're cute, so at least you have something going on you can hate less, I guess.

(shoulders raise, shoulders slump, but there's no pity. everyone he knows has had pain, manjiro has had pain, and hating oneself or their surroundings feels more of the same. mikey too hates himself, but well, he doesn't have much time or room for that, when there are so many people who need him standing on both feet.)

Pfft, what kind of shitty President would I be if I just let a stranger take care of me?
