I've Been Through the Desert on a Horse with No Name
Who: Tsuna and you!
Where: In the Desert
What: To complete his sentencing, Tsuna has led an expedition out into the desert to find the ruins of Tresed, and see if anything has changed Last time
Warnings: Risk of injury and possible death, hallucinations, monsters. Additional warnings to be added if needed.
OOC Notes:
-You do not need to have responded to the OOC Interest Check or the IC Interest Check to join in. Please feel free to dive right in!
-Timeline wise, ICly the expedition will return prior to the 15th so that we're all back for the event, but please don't feel you have to rush anything
-On a more personal note, while there is a risk of death with this expedition and if that's a direction you're interested in going for please do, I would also like to keep the body count to a minimum if possible. The ramifications of leading a bunch of people to their deaths is not necessarily something I want to play out with Tsuna at this time. Thank you!
The Expedition and Scouting Parties
The thing about deserts is that they are harsh environments. Unforgiving, some might say. The sun beating down, the wind whipping sand, the sound of monsters making their way through the desert. It's not the kind of place anyone would really want to go into, and yet, Tsuna is determined. Whether it is the effects of his sentencing or his own backbone finally making itself known, he has led this group into the desert for answers. It's not easy, and it weighs on him, but his face is set as he sends out small scouting parties, consulting maps and other information that he has, hoping to find the ruins of Tresed.
Sandstorms are prevalent in the area, so small scouting parties are being sent out to try and find some paths through it. Going out too far runs the risk of getting lost, injury, or potentially death. There are some monsters about, but they also have to contend with the storm.
The Oasis
But eventually, relief comes. An Oasis is discovered with clean, fresh water and edible vegetation. A respite from the harsh winds of the sandstorm. It's a chance to catch their breath and consolidate what they have learned so far. But as is so often the case in this world, things are quick to go awry. Mirages, of course, a key part of any desert expedition, start to appear. Images from that previous trip out to the ruins.
If you were on that previous trip to the desert, you've seen these images before but something about them seems off, wrong, not quite right. Warped, some might say.
If this is all new to you, you're seeing something that's happened before. But if it is wrong or right, who's to say?
But it might not matter if you've been in the desert before or not, because this vision is from the perspective of one of the Shadow Creatures that attacked before, and were ultimately killed. It comes with feelings of aching hunger, despair, and mindless fear in those final moments.
Or maybe it isn't an image of the desert at all. Maybe it's something far more familiar. An image of home, in the past, the present, or the future.
The Message and Returning Home
A message appears on the Chosen's tablets. Text, barely legible but undeniably a message:
FIND ME
But despite searching, and Tsuna will want to be thorough, the source will not be found, and they will be unable to trace it.
It's not much, but it is something. And they can return to Aldrip with that knowledge. One thing is clear though. They are not done with the desert yet.

I guess psychologists do say that sort of thing, huh? That seeing enough death desensitizes you to it.
[ Ange knows it's true - if not mostly because that's what happened to her too. She definitely sees a reflection in herself of what Levi went through back home, so it'd only make sense if there's similar parts of their personalities because of it, even if they're obviously not the exact same. ]
Still, you should treat your life a little better in this place. I know that they bring us back when we die, but who's to say when they might suddenly decide to stop doing that? Then you'd be dead forever.
no subject
I guess? I don't really know how to live any other way and if I died...I don't know. I don't think that would be so bad.
[He's got a few things going on here, but not enough to really look forward to.]
no subject
After all, Ange's way of thinking is not all that dissimilar. But it's much easier to accept for herself than it is to accept it for anyone else. ]
Why not? Would you be okay with it even if it hurt? Don't you have anything left to do?
[ Still, considering how familiar - and personal to her as well - the topic is, Ange sounds relatively calmer as she asks those questions than most others likely would in this situation. ]
no subject
[You had to be alive to feel things, right? Well, he had no idea how those ghosts in the orphanage worked.]
There's not really anything I want to do. The only goal I ever had was just to survive.
[Well, and make up for allowing others to die instead.]
cw: suicidal ideation talk
[ .. It's all too relatable, isn't it? Everything Levi is saying. It's why Ange can be so calm in the face of the words she's hearing - because there's nothing she hasn't thought about before herself.
But she knows those thoughts are useless in this place. ]
Even if we die some dumb, painful death, this place will return us back to life over and over again. As long as we're here, there's no escape. [ It's not the best argument as to why someone shouldn't kill themselves.
But it's at least logical when it comes to this place, and that's what matters to Ange. It's the same thing the girl has told herself, after all. ]
cw: suicidal/murderous ideation/addiction talk
[He'd have no problem killing someone else if he thought they deserved it, but Levi doesn't think he could ever end his own life. Unless it was just by ODing on heroin, maybe. His survival instinct is too strong.]

[ Ange stops looking around them for a moment - if their target was anywhere near, surely they would have spotted them by now, so they can just walk a bit further before she'll take another look around - and instead looks over at Levi. ]
You mean Gogol?
no subject
I guess? The guy who cut up the snake lady and buried her organs all around town. Apparently he got in a fight when some guys went to confront him or something and they ended up killing him.
But then they had to do that stupid presentation thing.
no subject
I see.
[ She did hear a part of this story from Gogol himself, but he hadn't named the people who did this to him - that sure explains a thing or two about that dumb presentation she didn't even watch all the way through. ]
He was actually doing that to go against the people in charge here. It was an entirely dumbass way to do it by putting everyone's lives on the line like that, but.. [ She shrugs a little. ] At least it proves the revival system is pretty indiscriminate here. Even if you died because you did something against the people in charge, those people in charge will revive you anyway.
[ A slight moment, and then a thought seems to occur to the girl, however morbid. ]
Unless they're just reviving you in that case because they want to torture you more by throwing you in this place, rather than giving you the release of death.
[ A very!! Normal!! Thought!! ]
no subject
[He'd been effected by the miasma pretty badly, so even if he could be convinced the reason behind it was noble Levi'd still be pissed about it.]
That's probably it. They want to fuck with us more. Or maybe they just want to be the ones who control when we live and die and if someone else does it they aren't happy.
[Totally normal line of thought.]
no subject
I don't think they care enough be unhappy. I mean.. From what I heard, they did end up punishing him for causing all of that, but it didn't sound all that much worse than the sentencing most people go through. Especially since he's back to his usual self by now.
[ Not exactly the sort of punishment you'd imagine for someone who tried to kill everyone here, Ange thinks..
Though that does make her think-- ]
Have you ever had personal contact with Jerry before?
no subject
[Though it had been a bit weird.]
He got kinda messed up for a second. Looked like he was made of wires or something. He didn't seem to notice it, though.
no subject
[ Genuinely so. Ange's tone shifts slightly away from total emotionless, considering there's some curiosity and intrigue in it now. ]
I've heard of something similar. Not through personal experience, since he hasn't seen a reason to visit me so far, but I've heard a recording that someone sent me. Someone else was suddenly speaking through Jerry in that moment. I guess he's just some sort of construct that some greater force is using, especially if it looked to you like he was made of wires.

Someone asked Jerry what kind of reality this is, and this weird garbled sound came out of him that sounded a little like 'it's your reality.' He didn't even seem to notice that he was saying that though, so it clearly was something else speaking through him like a puppet.

[ .. if Jerry is what she thinks he is, anyway.
In the end it's all speculation, though there's at least some evidence for it now with the things both she and Levi have noticed. ]
I don't think he's even a little bit real. [ Ange says it so easily. Like the concept of someone straight up not being real isn't all that weird to her. ]
no subject
[People not being real is still really confusing for him, but people here seemed to think it was real so he was willing to accept it and just not think about it.]
no subject
[ There's a slight pause, and then the girl adds: ]
Not that that is saying much. [ Apparently she doesn't have all that high of an opinion of the locals, huh.. ]
