Of course, it doesn't take the fox long to follow the source of one very familiar scent to a specific tree. Having come out to the greenery himself for a moment of quiet thought, it's easy enough to assume Hiei has settled in to nap somewhere he's deemed safe enough. Too alert to even consider sleeping himself, this will have to suffice. For now, Kurama simply gets comfortable in the shade at the base of the tree and waits him out.
Hiei has, of course, found a suitable tree for a nap. Despite the fact that his abilities had been weakened by coming to this place, the draw of the Jagan on his reserves did not stop. Beyond that, his usage of it to try and suss out what was going on here had been more than what he typically uses, other than in a day’s work on border patrol.
At any rate, after a while the jagan opens again for a cursory check of his immediate area, a change that Kurama will no doubt feel.
In short order there is a shift from the upper branches, and Hiei’s dark clad figure drops nearly silently on to the biggest branch near Kurama.
“Kurama.” He is relieved, even a little, to have the fox’s familiar presence in a brand new place.
Green eyes lift to the branch Hiei addresses him from, taking a moment to respond as he tucks a hand into his hair before pushing himself to his feet. "It seemed prudent to let you rest."
Nevermind that he was also there for the same purpose. That and taking inventory of available supplies. Even having Hiei nearby allowed a sense of relief in dealing with this world's unknown factors, he didn't need to disturb him right away.
"If you're done, perhaps you might care to join me. I thought I might explore a bit after all."
“And gave you time to collect.” Hiei isn’t fooled for even a moment, but he’s used to it from Kurama. The fox was always picking up seeds and storing them for later use, and here…
It made sense. The both of them being prepared for a possible fight, together, is far more assuring than facing these unknowns alone.
“Explore?” Hiei has done a little bit of that himself, of course, but Kurama may have other ideas of where is most important to look, too.
“Mn.” Despite the sound indicating he would think about it, Hiei drops down to ground level next to him. “Fine. Where would you like to go?”
He doesn't respond to that, considering confirmation feels redundant and he's certainly not going to argue otherwise. It was best to use whatever available resources to their advantage, especially if their collective abilities were impaired in some way upon arrival. "The festivities may be enlightening, it would be wise to familiarize ourselves with the local customs if we're going to be trapped here, regardless."
Indefinitely as it would seem, though he is concerned that the fire demon was more likely to argue otherwise if he shares that particular concern out loud. He is aware that is far more to his own liking than Hiei's, fireworks are quite a human tradition, after all. "Have you eaten?"
Excuse him, Kurama, but that’s a little look that says he doesn’t quite believe it. A brow raises, ever so slightly, a low noise rising in his throat before he bothers to speak. “Somehow I doubt you want to go to this festival only to learn.”
He knows you, Kurama. But it is somewhat valid and … now that Kurama had brought it up…
“No.” But he is hungry, so that would be excuse enough for him at the moment. Satisfying his stomach will take precedent over learning for him but Kurama likely knows that already. “Let’s go.”
Not that Kurama needed his permission, but it’s as clear indication he wants to go as Hiei is going to get.
Kurama only gives him a long silent look at that accusation. He'd wagered food would be a draw for the fire apparition, it wasn't as if he was going to be interested in games or the people. The fox is far more curious than anything else and napping or remaining alone provides no answers. Until they figure out the currency here, it was entirely possible acquiring anything would mean resorting to other measures, at least for now, but that wasn't anything they weren't both familiar with.
It isn't until they've started walking that he bothers to respond to Hiei's earlier statement, "surely, you've learned by now that I never do anything for only one reason." Not actually admitting to anything but he hadn't been directly accused, either.
"Mn. Of course." Another one of those knowing, sideways glances follows, but Hiei is smart enough not to bring up more and embroil himself in more of Kurama's sideways talk. He'd known the fox for far too long now to think that it would end up in any other way than Kurama wanting to go both for the 'education' value and to be a little shit about something.
This whole adventure may end up in other ways than the fire demon intended it, but that was the way of things with most ventures involving Kurama. If they were together he could be at least assured that the two of them combined were a greater threat than most.
"I'm sure I will be embroiled in something I don't want to be soon enough when you are involved."
Asking Hiei to sit down and enjoy something is a reach, he realizes. Still, that's hardly the same as when he's knowingly being a shit, that's a targeted and deliberate action, after all. Not that he would expect the fire apparition to differentiate, of course.
"You make it sound as though I've made a habit of dragging you into nefarious plots." He sounds a little tired, actually. Maybe Hiei would prefer it if they were closer aligned to that description, something he'd no doubt find more interesting than whatever the fox had in mind.
"I simply believe there will be some interesting new food to try while we get to know this place, and hopefully, our captors." Oh, how disappointed he's about to be on that front. "The more information we collect, the better, and crowds have a way of revealing things they do not realize. Perhaps it will be in our best interest to separate and reconvene at an agreed upon location, that will allow us to cover different ground."
If planned right, it will provide an adequate preliminary report of the environment, give Hiei something to do that's less likely to cause trouble, and get them back together in time for the fireworks.
"Not a habit yet.." Hiei will concede that point, however... they do have a habit of getting into trouble together, don't they? Or at least they had since they crossed paths with Yusuke. Hiei is far more likely to verbally blame the Detective for that than Kurama, but for the sake of ribbing the fox Hiei will go ahead and do it anyway.
Kurama goes on to make a good point, of course, though Hiei's mind sticks for a long moment on the mention of food. His stomach too makes a little sound of agreement to that part of the deal, though the fire demon will take a moment to think before he properly responds. There is a lot to think about, when taking on a new place with entirely new people and, possibly, a new governing body that they will have to fiddle their way through.
"You are more apt toward information gathering.." Hiei in all of his loner preferences does not tend to linger in crowds, or by people who may decide to try and draw him into a conversation. Beyond that, he knows that he will more likely be focused on food in comparison to his partner.
"Besides, what if something happens? With our abilities weakened, it may be best to think defensively."
"Yet." He repeats dryly, reading between those lines. Hiei could blame the fox or Yusuke all he wanted, but it was his scheme to steal those artifacts that brought them all together in the first place, several years ago.
Kurama might be more open to friendly conversation than Hiei but that provides the fire demon with more opportunity to observe. "You don't truly think you can convince me the only thing you do in those trees is nap." He knows that Hiei uses the position to his advantage, what was that, if not information gathering? While Kurama had to rely on word of mouth and research, Hiei had his own ways of doing things, and abilities for that purpose.
His head tilts at the question, "what if something happens?" They would handle it as they always did, simple as that.
The little fire demon offers a sly, half-smile kind of expression in return for the fox's astute observations about his habits of lingering in high-up places where he was not always noticed. He had learned quite a lot about humans and the human world while lounging that way, had heard many people's issues that he hadn't even intended to. Humans were delightfully ignorant to things above their heads. If he were the type to think of pranks it would have provided him much more entertainment than school kid gossip or other people's tragedies.
"Fine. It is not the only thing I do." No need to lie about it, of course. Not to Kurama anyway. Even without the Jagan there is a lot to be gathered in other people's small talk, what they say in an unguarded moment.
"Nothing here seems overtly threatening." The fire demon explains, for a moment, before his shoulders shrug. "But we both know that can change at a moment's notice, is all."
He doesn't need that little smile to reinforce what he already knows, but he will make note of Hiei's confirmation in any form. It wasn't as if the fire demon has concerns about the local gossip, but what might be overhead about more supernatural events between the casual human chatter might be more of interest.
"That depends," Kurama motions towards the sounds of the crowd. "We could find a place closer to our destination, or agree to meet back here at the end of the night." From the tone, he's clearly expecting Hiei to have an opinion on whether they go separate ways now or after some initial familiarity with the ground they'll be covering.
Hiei takes a cursory glance at their surroundings after Kurama's offer. Nothing seemed outright threatening (yet, anyway), and he's already scanned the nearby area with the Jagan just to see if anything stuck out as 'out of the ordinary. Strangely, nothing there had seemed particularly of note either, though it did somewhat soothe him that there was no lingering power over them that he could clearly see or sense.
A Toguro or Sensui, as he would term it, had not shown their face just yet.
But it does make him more at ease that they did not need to linger so closeby to one another in their explorations, at least. The two of them were both still strong enough that most threats would not be hard to dispatch with.
"We can meet back later. I don't think there is anything lingering over us that is so threatening that we cannot be apart."
wildcard, technically.

Fine, Kurama, you've got him.
