[Rise makes a low hum, then pushes sunglasses from her eyes on the top of her head. She's still eyeing the board, then the guy, then the board again, and sighs. This might be the only chance she gets to try out these things because she wouldn't dare go out alone.]
If we take a dip, you're treating me to all the ice cream I can eat, [she decides, toeing off her sandals and following Ekko in the water. She shivers, as she had been in the sun all day, but perseveres until they are out on the water.
She expects him to climb up first so he can help her up. It's the proper way to do it, right? Like a gentleman!]
[When she finally agrees albeit reluctantly it seems like to join him in the endeavor Ekko smiles warmly with a hushed bit of laughter under his breath at the mention of owing her ice cream if she ended up falling into the water. Waving his hands in front of his face the fellow teenager shakes his head trying not to get her hopes up from getting a bit wet in this activity, after all they were going into open waters and this was her first foray into trying something like this.]
Listen I can teach you but I won't make any promises that you aren't about to take a dive once or twice! Though since this is your first time on a board how about ice cream is on me just for trying it out. Deal?
[Hopefully that would be a good enough incentive for her to just go with it and accept the fact that she wasn't going to be perfect. All he could do was teach her the basics and watch him closely to learn from her mistakes should she make them. When she finally wades into the water coming up beside him instead of grabbing her own board he gets the feeling she was expecting a hand getting onto it before mounting his own. That was fine by him, placing hands on the edge of the platform to steady it as he instructs what to do first.]
Alright...So first thing you want to do is pull yourself up and onto the board putting your weight forward but make sure to start on your knees and don't just try standing up or you're just going to fall on your face right away.
[There IS a pout there at the admission that the probability of falling off is big, but-] Well- at least you're honest. So, I'll take you on it. Ice cream regardless of the result. [Again, it goes against the braggart types so she'll take it! Might as well have some fun, even if it ends up with having more seawater in her hair and lungs than she wants.
Listen, she doesn't know how this goes, or that she had to take her own! She just... followed the invitation. So this is the board she's getting! Right?
She places her hands on the board, nerves still working, but feeling a bit better with the offered help.]
Okay, okay, h--oop! [She jumps off of the ground and with the help of the water, she easily climbs the board, hands AND knees on the board. There's a little squeak of surprise as the thing sways on the waves, so she's gripping the sides of the board with all her might.]
T-This is WAY more adventurous than what I'm used to! [And she helps deal with shadows too.] Don't let me fall! Not so soon, alright!?
[No one said this was going to be easy but if she followed along by his example Rise would do just fine and might even enjoy herself in the process. Laying out the ground work for her Ekko watches intently as his counterpart hoists herself onto the windboard despite struggling a bit at first. An amused grin washed over his lips as she now sits upon it perched on her knees as instructed, nodding along as his smile grows wider at her insistence to keep her steady.]
We're just getting started. Now hold on a minute while I grab my ride too.
[Wading back through the water he is quick to usher out another board into the open sea not to far from her so she could watch carefully for the next step. This was the hard part other than steering but so long as she kept her balance when she got up onto her feet and use the sail to stabilize herself it would be a cake walk after that. Pulling himself up and onto his own as well staying in place on his knees he looks back over his shoulder towards Rise with a firm nod.]
Okay now its time for the tricky part...Grab the rope attached to the sail then slowly rise onto your feet standing up straight then you're going to lean back a bit so the sail comes out of the water. Watch me, got it?
[Leading by example the boy rises onto his feet planting them firmly in the center of the board about shoulder width apart before he uses the rope to lean back a bit, sail coming out of the water on cue at a ninety degree angle so they wouldn't catch the wind and go jetting off without their grip on the actual steering portion hold itself.]
[She's trying very hard not to appear as a scaredy cat in front of the guy, that's NOT cool. So Rise does her best to reel in her panic when he waddles away to get his own ride. She can feel the board underneath her shift on the waves and she has to close her eyes to focus.
When she hears him coming back, there's an obvious relief on her face, but also apprehension because- she needs to stand up now, from the instructions she's getting, and that's easier said than done.]
Hmmm-! You do it so easily! [She feels around for the rope and finally grabs it, and shifts to sit back on the balls on her feet. Maybe... maybe if she sees this like some kind of dance practice will help? No, not really. She'll have to push through it.
She pulls firmly at the rope and slowly raises herself to her feet, her foot slipping for a moment on the wet board, but she keeps her balance, and manages to get the sail up too!]
Oo-! Oh, this is SO not stable! [She's standing but her balance is off.] It feels like I'm going to fall over any moment... [that was more to herself than the guy. He's done a stellar job teaching her, that she will appreciate later when her feet are on even ground.]
[Ekko watches along intently as his counterpart struggles to find the rope to pull up the sail at first, a small gasp escaping him when she almost slips and falls but thankfully catches herself. The last thing he needs is for Rise to fall off and smash her head on the way down or something terrible like that he'd feel pretty awful despite forewarning that she might do so beforehand.
When she sings him praises he cannot help but shrug his shoulders a little with a sincere smile along with it. He was used to whizzing through the skies above on a far more advanced hoverboard with precise movements so this was nothing by comparison.]
I'm used to something a little more unforgiving if you fall off so this is nothing. You're doing great though we're almost there just don't slip at the finish line, alright?
[Trying his best to give her a bit of reassurance, making sure she was paying close attention again before making his next move.]
Listen up, this is one of the last steps…Go ahead and grab the middle bar on the sail. It's how you steer along with that crossbar.
[Going over it slowly he does exactly as he says, securing his hands on the mast at both hold positions. He's never actually used a wind board before so he tests how to shift his weight and turn himself first before going over it. Moving the sail back he notes it catching the wind whilst shifting it forward resisting him. Now that he had the gist of it he looks back towards Rise one last time with his final instructions.]
Make sure you keep your weight in the center and keep your arms extended or you're going to end up eating it real quick! Once you pull the sail back it's game on so you best be ready, if you want to slow down to stop twist it forward. Let's do this!
[More unforgiving!? What is this guy doing, bungee jumping without rope!? Wait, she can't focus on that- if she doesn't follow the instructions, she'll end up making a fool of herself in front of him! That's not allowed in her book! She grabs the bar of the sail and pulls it towards her, trying to bring her wobble on the board to a minimum.
...and it feels like the worst part is over? Standing up on this thing without falling over is tricky, but once with something to hold on to, even if tricky, it's kind of okay? She even manages a giggle when the wind gets her board float forward- not in the direction she wants, but it's going somewhere, so that's a win! Right?]
This is kind of fun, [she nods frantically when he reminds her to keep her balance centered and she corrects herself immediately. She's still hesitant to get the speed up to nines, but she's balancing this well- for a beginner!]
Wait- what do you mean 'game on'? I can't race you! I can barely stand on this![The fear of going too far and not being able to come back due to sea currents is REAL.
Then again, if he takes off and leaves her in the shallows here, she might panic either way and chase after him (to the best of her ability!).]
[Rise seemed to get the hang of things relatively quickly which was good to see, a sense of pride welling up inside Ekko knowing he was a good enough teacher. Well, maybe for something like this but if it came to actual schooling she was shit out of luck there having no real education. He was a self taught learner such as it was along with being a talented inventor who was pretty bright by most people's standards in Zaun, fixing gadgetry at Benzo’s shop from a young age before his untimely demise. But that was neither here nor there and didn't want to ruin this fun moment dwelling on such things.
Once he's sure his newfound companion had comfortably found their center and was beginning to learn the basics he thought to show off a little, for he was known to be a bit cocky at times when he excelled at something. Leaning his weight back he catches the wind on his sail taking off to carve perfectly into an oncoming wave with a burst of laughter ushered out triumphantly.]
Whew! This definitely makes me feel back home!
[Sorry Rise he's a bit enraptured by the task at hand but quickly looks back over his shoulder to make sure she hasn't bailed off yet, he wasn't about to leave her completely alone after he was the one to coax the girl into this. Turning backwards Ekko circles around to come at her opposite side to face her directly, giving an impressed nod as he watches her go passing by.]
See you got this! Told ya it would be good time!
[Yelling out over the roar of the ocean as he thoroughly enjoying himself thus far.]
