[Why is this bothering him so much? They're just coworkers. It's not like either of them even considers the other a friend, exactly. And yet the idea of her getting hurt sends a pulse of anxiety all the way through him, as if he can't bear to see it, as if it's too much to watch any of them get hurt again--
("Any of them"? "Again"? What--)]
That doesn't mean you have to charge in headfirst!
[Why was he trying so hard? Beyond pleasantries at work they didn't speak. Naoto wasn't nervous, but she was indignant. She might have been slightly younger but she didn't need this...babying?]
And do what instead senpai? Just potentially leave someone to die?
[She'd thrown an arm out, gesturing to them, the small area they were in. Then she froze. Her scowl deepening, mouthing the oddly familiar word to herself.]
[Senpai. He pauses at the word, at the sudden and inexplicable feeling of familiarity that washes over him. In that moment, he thinks -- of course he's trying this hard. Weren't they past this? Wasn't she reckless enough before?
(Before?)
For a moment, Yu is visibly shaken, but then he reins it in and shakes his head.]
... You're right. It's not my business. [They're not friends. Something within him screams to the contrary, but he sets it aside, for now.] But I thought you'd at least take stock of the situation first.
[Her face was still tight, still challenging. Her back ramrod straight like that'd make her the same height as him. That she wouldn't be bossed around.]
How am I supposed to do that when I'm too far away to see?
[He got another look. Then she huffed and darted off, just going between the trees and around him and the trail. No more wast-
YELPING as twigs snapped and she fell through a bush.]
[Carefully, ideally is what he wants to say, but he bites it back, the memory of the last few moments burned into him. He doesn't control other people; what she does doesn't even affect him. Not really.
So...what's this part of his mind that wants to protest...??
Whatever he was about to say is completely overridden when she falls through the bushes. Without even thinking about it, he dives in after her.]
[She wasn't dumb, she knew to be careful. But some things were more important than that. It was why she'd darted off.
Or attempted to. She'd not been ready for the...animal burrow? hidden by the foliage and darkness. She scrambled, her foot getting tangled in the roots.]
I'm fine! I'm fine! [Please don't step on her as she tried to get up and out of the way.]
[He's on edge, and he realizes that as she scrambles in the underbrush. Beyond the strange creature that appeared, there's really no reason for that, but he feels it anyway: a sense of danger and unease that won't go away.
It's not until she shouts that he exhales, relieved.]
Okay. Here-- [He sticks a hand through the bushes.] Can I give you a hand?
[Stubborn indeed. Yu breathes a quiet sigh and pulls his hand back by a fraction--
--only to freeze at the sound of a twig snapping. It's probably nothing, logically reasoned, but some deeper instinct has him reaching for a weapon he doesn't have.]
... Did you hear that?
[His voice is practically a whisper, quiet and careful.]
[Naoto had frozen at the noise, her eyes looking towards it. Though she couldn't see anything. The canopy of the trees blocked out too much of the moonlight.
She just gave a small nod and a hum. Yep, she'd heard that.

Then there was that noise.
That got a squeak from Naoto, an actual squeak. Then a choked noise as she started to scramble. Braincells? Gone, panic mode activated.]
