[open/mingle] a light in the darkness

Who: any and everyone!
Where: astralin's farmhouse
What: mingle log for post-blackout!
Warnings: y'all tell me, please be good and don't break the house :(

If she hadn't been at the party, Kotone wouldn't have even known about the extent of the blackout. Sure, it's inconvenient, considering a lot of the lights are electric, and the fridge is, of course, powered by electricity as well, but the farmhouse she'd taken over from Astralin is an older and more traditional building. The main heat sources are the fireplaces strategically placed throughout the building -- a large one in the living space, a smaller one in the kitchen along with a wood-burning stove, and another large central one upstairs to help heat the bedrooms -- and the geothermal hot springs on the land. With the cold weather and snow on the ground, it's easy to take the food from the fridge and leave it outside in a locked box away from wild animals, but aside from the inconvenience of resorting to the candles and lanterns that were stockpiled in the basement, the farmhouse itself survives relatively unscathed!

Therefore, not long after the blast, Kotone sends a video message over the (charm) network inviting anyone who wants to take shelter from the cold, or even just cook some food, to come to Astralin's farmhouse on the edge of town for as long as they want or need.

She won't even make anyone help out on the farm. Probably!

1. Rural Snapshot

Power might go out, but life on the farm doesn't stop for something like that! The old wood stoves in the barn need to be cleaned up and made ready for use to keep the animals warm, and the animals still need to be taken care of. Goats, sheep, cows, chickens (a particularly big and brave one has the tiniest leather collar and a tag that says her name is "Scramble," and her friends Benedict and Sunny aren't far behind. They are Not For Eating (though their eggs are!))

Kotone won't make anyone help her with the farm chores of cleaning the barn, feeding the animals, or generally keeping things up and running, but she definitely won't turn down the help, either, giving pointers so the new folk don't completely muck it up (sometimes literally).

With the snow and general chill, there's not much to do with the crops themselves. Everyone is safe from the fields for now!

2. Potluck and BYOB (chef's recommendation: hot cocoa)

The farmhouse is not the inn -- Kotone has some food prepped and stored, with preserves from the fall harvest one of the key features, but it's not meant to feed the whole town. Thus, Kotone's going to request that anyone coming to stay at the farmhouse bring either raw ingredients or something they've made to share with any other hapless souls. Feel free to use the kitchen to cook, or get some help from someone else with cooking!

The wood-burning stove in the kitchen is perfect for heating up cocoa or wine, and there's room to get close with someone in front of any of the fireplaces. Like, it's encouraged to get close. It's a big farmhouse, but not that big. Make a friend! Share some warmth! The couches are cozy and comfortable, and if someone dozes off, well, Kotone won't be the one waking anyone up.

If someone would prefer to sleep in a bed, there are some bedrooms upstairs! One is, of course, sharing the room with plants. They're benign, normal plants, from potted flowers to hanging vines, but they are everywhere. Kotone herself doesn't have much of a green thumb other than keeping the plants watered and in view of sunlight, but the plants themselves seem to be flourishing throughout the farmhouse either way. It's almost as if someone (Astralin) had used magic to keep them growing strong and healthy, even indoors.

Oh, and speaking of sharing, again, the farmhouse isn't the inn. Expect to be sharing a space with someone else. Maybe a few people! Cozy up and make a new friend. It's better than freezing to death, right?

3. Hot Springs Episode

There are natural hot springs on the farmland that have been developed to mimic a Japanese onsen in places. The air might be cold and dark, but there are candles and lanterns around the springs to light it, and the water is nice and warm, perfect for those chill nights.

There are rules posted -- namely, clean yourself before going to soak -- and while there are separate bathing spaces for genders, Kotone doesn't really care too much about mixed bathing as long as everyone is respectful about it. Others may not be so casual about it, though, so one has to venture across at their own risk!

[ooc: This is a mingle! Feel free to use these prompts as inspiration or make your own. The only request I have is not to completely destroy the farmhouse or harm the animals -- anything else, go wild!]

[ Minato nods, acknowledging the girl's gratitude. Personally, he's thankful too. She's taken one of the mugs which means his tray of drinks is a little lighter.

He eyes the empty spot next to her. ]

Okay.

[ But instead of taking that spot, Minato walks away. And though his actions seem to contradict his response, it quickly becomes clear what he's up to. He sets the tray of hot cocoa down on the living room's coffee table. Now they'll be available for others without him offering the mugs personally.

He does take one of the mugs for himself before returning to the girl. Minato settles down next to her and takes a sip of his own drink. ]

...I'm new.

[She watches him with curiosity. She offered a seat but she didn’t say he had to take it necessarily.

The confusion is immediately cleared up once he takes a seat next to her.
]

Very new, I take it. You arrived at a very strange time for Aldrip.

[She thinks, before they get too into any conversation she should probably introduce herself.]

I’m Haru, it’s a pleasure. It was very kind of you to make hot chocolate for everyone out at the farm.

[ That's handy information. It's a bit reassuring as well, hearing that the lack of electricity is an outlier and not the norm. But before Minato's swept away in his thoughts, the girl at his side is introducing herself. He dips his head a bit, politely, to acknowledge her introduction. ]

Minato.

[ He offers Haru a small shrug before taking a sip of his hot chocolate. ]

I found the ingredients in the kitchen, that's all.

[ It was a small offering to the others. Anyone could have done it, couldn't they? ]

[She is pretty sure the majority of Aldrip would be in shambles if no electricity was a normal thing. So she is thankfully that this isn’t the case.

She takes another sip of her hot chocolate.
]

It’s my pleasure, Minato-san.

[ She nods. ]

Ah, well…it was still a nice gesture. Have you been settling in okay?

[She would be remiss not to try and help someone who has just arrived, considering all the help that was given to her. ]

[ Was it? Well... if that's how it seemed, Minato's content to accept that perception. All right then -- he can accept that compliment.

He nods, holding the mug by its handle with one hand while placing a palm on its side. The warmth seeps in from the mug to his hand. ]

Everyone's been good to me.

[ Not that it took very much for Minato to have a decent opinion of a person. It comes with very rarely devoting much energy into forming opinions about others at all. ]

...it's not so bad here.

[ The words come out halfhearted though as he glances down at his dead music player, now a glorified piece of plastic dangling around his neck. The no electricity thing hadn't been too bad until he realized it extended to his music player. And then it started sucking. ]

[ She looks down at the music player, the half-hearted "it's not so bad" must have come directly from that device not working. She understands. She was never great at technology herself. ]

What sort of music do you like to listen to?

[ She nods her head towards the music player again. ]

I tend to like more classical pieces...but I am always willing to listen to new things.

[ Ironically, no one's ever asked him that before. ]

Anything, really.

[ It helps that he's not the sort who needs to listen to several different songs at a time. Instead, Minato's the sort who prefers leaving the same song over and over on loop. ]

...I like anything that makes the world less loud.

[ And chaotic, too. Having just one thing to listen to, to focus on, is something he finds pretty handy.

Minato offers Haru a small nod. ]

Classical is good for that.

It is, isn’t it? I find it pretty relaxing.

[ She smiles at him. She would be really surprised to hear no one ever asked him that question. ]

After things return to normal, maybe we can look into ways to fix it. I’d be glad to help.

[ That's kind of Haru to offer her assistance. So he nods a bit, content to accept her help if she's offering it.

But as for her earlier statement, "relaxing" is certainly one word to describe classical music, though the genre is rather broad. He goes quiet, deliberating while flipping through the different pieces he's heard in the past. ]

Even the louder ones?

[ Minor keys, dissonance, accents, the sudden whiplash of pianississimo into forte -- even unassuming pieces of music can be fraught with violence, should one study their entire score.

Sounds have always been more akin to proper company for him than people. Perhaps that's why no one's asked him about his favorite music. ]

[personal profile] mapsio 2024-03-24 03:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I think that depends all on the mood you’re trying to set. Some pieces can certainly get your heart rate up, or make you feel sad.

But they say it’s part of the experience. Composers really do amazing work.

[She thinks if she knew more about the study of music, she would be able to converse so much more on the topic.

She sips at her hot chocolate.
]

I suppose if you were to want to hype yourself up, a classical piece about a depressing topic just won’t do!

[ It's true, there's a piece for every shade on the spectrum known as human emotion.

Minato nods in agreement.

Although, now that they're discussing his dead music player, a certain thought occurs to him. ]

...where I'm from, there was a hidden hour between each day where electronics stopped working.

[ And like. A lot of other stuff happened too, but. ]

Maybe something similar is happening here.

[personal profile] mapsio 2024-04-01 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
A hidden hour?

[Well, no one else from Minato's world has told her about the dark hour. So understandably she seems a little confused at the thought of this.]

What would you do within a hidden hour, anyways?

[It seems sort of like something unexplainable, just like Mementos.]

[ Buckle up Haru. He's about to make you question everything you've known about the 24-hour day -- ]

Yeah. It happens at midnight, called the "Dark Hour." ...electronics stop working and people usually end up suspended in time, asleep in coffins.

[ Maybe that's for the best, because, ]

...it's when Shadows come out. They hunt people who didn't transform into coffins during the Dark Hour.
