[open/mingle] a light in the darkness
Who: any and everyone!
Where: astralin's farmhouse
What: mingle log for post-blackout!
Warnings: y'all tell me, please be good and don't break the house :(
If she hadn't been at the party, Kotone wouldn't have even known about the extent of the blackout. Sure, it's inconvenient, considering a lot of the lights are electric, and the fridge is, of course, powered by electricity as well, but the farmhouse she'd taken over from Astralin is an older and more traditional building. The main heat sources are the fireplaces strategically placed throughout the building -- a large one in the living space, a smaller one in the kitchen along with a wood-burning stove, and another large central one upstairs to help heat the bedrooms -- and the geothermal hot springs on the land. With the cold weather and snow on the ground, it's easy to take the food from the fridge and leave it outside in a locked box away from wild animals, but aside from the inconvenience of resorting to the candles and lanterns that were stockpiled in the basement, the farmhouse itself survives relatively unscathed!
Therefore, not long after the blast, Kotone sends a video message over the (charm) network inviting anyone who wants to take shelter from the cold, or even just cook some food, to come to Astralin's farmhouse on the edge of town for as long as they want or need.
She won't even make anyone help out on the farm. Probably!
1. Rural Snapshot
Power might go out, but life on the farm doesn't stop for something like that! The old wood stoves in the barn need to be cleaned up and made ready for use to keep the animals warm, and the animals still need to be taken care of. Goats, sheep, cows, chickens (a particularly big and brave one has the tiniest leather collar and a tag that says her name is "Scramble," and her friends Benedict and Sunny aren't far behind. They are Not For Eating (though their eggs are!))
Kotone won't make anyone help her with the farm chores of cleaning the barn, feeding the animals, or generally keeping things up and running, but she definitely won't turn down the help, either, giving pointers so the new folk don't completely muck it up (sometimes literally).
With the snow and general chill, there's not much to do with the crops themselves. Everyone is safe from the fields for now!
2. Potluck and BYOB (chef's recommendation: hot cocoa)
The farmhouse is not the inn -- Kotone has some food prepped and stored, with preserves from the fall harvest one of the key features, but it's not meant to feed the whole town. Thus, Kotone's going to request that anyone coming to stay at the farmhouse bring either raw ingredients or something they've made to share with any other hapless souls. Feel free to use the kitchen to cook, or get some help from someone else with cooking!
The wood-burning stove in the kitchen is perfect for heating up cocoa or wine, and there's room to get close with someone in front of any of the fireplaces. Like, it's encouraged to get close. It's a big farmhouse, but not that big. Make a friend! Share some warmth! The couches are cozy and comfortable, and if someone dozes off, well, Kotone won't be the one waking anyone up.
If someone would prefer to sleep in a bed, there are some bedrooms upstairs! One is, of course, sharing the room with plants. They're benign, normal plants, from potted flowers to hanging vines, but they are everywhere. Kotone herself doesn't have much of a green thumb other than keeping the plants watered and in view of sunlight, but the plants themselves seem to be flourishing throughout the farmhouse either way. It's almost as if someone (Astralin) had used magic to keep them growing strong and healthy, even indoors.
Oh, and speaking of sharing, again, the farmhouse isn't the inn. Expect to be sharing a space with someone else. Maybe a few people! Cozy up and make a new friend. It's better than freezing to death, right?
3. Hot Springs Episode
There are natural hot springs on the farmland that have been developed to mimic a Japanese onsen in places. The air might be cold and dark, but there are candles and lanterns around the springs to light it, and the water is nice and warm, perfect for those chill nights.
There are rules posted -- namely, clean yourself before going to soak -- and while there are separate bathing spaces for genders, Kotone doesn't really care too much about mixed bathing as long as everyone is respectful about it. Others may not be so casual about it, though, so one has to venture across at their own risk!
[ooc: This is a mingle! Feel free to use these prompts as inspiration or make your own. The only request I have is not to completely destroy the farmhouse or harm the animals -- anything else, go wild!]

Thank you um... Miss Kotone, right?
[He had heard her name here and there. The descriptions of her match what was said, and he manages to crack a soft smile at her. His hand twitching against his side, and feeling the sudden urge to pat her head, but he doesn't do that. Instead, he is as friendly as ever.]
Thank you taking care of the animals... And well. Everything here, really.

[Her smile doesn't waver, even though the extra confirmation that yeah, he doesn't remember her, does dig claws into her heart. It's okay. It's not like this is the first time people have forgotten who she is, after all!
If anything, she just shrugs, clasping her hands behind her back and venturing a little closer around, careful to avoid the chickens and the grain scattered beneath for them.]
And it's no problem! The you who was here before let me stay here without making me pay rent, so... it seemed like the least I could do!
[She drops down into a crouch, holding out her hands and beckoning Sunny to come in closer so she can pet her. Keeping her eyes on the chicken, she adds,] It is your farm, though, so I'm happy you can take it back over again.

Well, consider that arrangement still in effect. I would never make you leave if you did not want to leave, but are there any other occupants or guests that I should be aware of? Not that I mind -- my children have plenty of guests in and out of our home all the time. I just want to be mindful of your privacy.
[Still always a Dad. It seems he hasn't changed one bit. He figures that's the sort of relationship they had since she lived with him apparently, and that wasn't going to change. Even if he can't remember.]
I will be happy to take it back so you can get plenty of rest, Miss Kotone. You deserve it... And once again, thank you for caring for this place in my absence. You seem to have a good rapport with the animals, and everything else it well taken care of...
[He would say that he's proud of her, but he figures it's not his place to.]

Not anymore! [she informs him with an attempt at cheer, answering his question about other residents instead of verbally answering any other part of what he'd said.] There were a few other people staying here, but they're gone now, so you don't have to worry.
[She briefly considers telling him that Scott comes over pretty frequently, but while she knows her Astralin would have cared, well... it seems kind of silly to tell this one when he barely even knows who she is. Like, he can't really be interested, can he?]
Anyway, I can't take too much credit! You hired local farmhands before you left. They did all the real work with the crops while you were gone.
no subject
I see... I was not worried, as it is quite accurate for me to allow people to stay in my home. I do not mind either way... As long as whoever stays in my house feels safe.
[That being said, that smile slowly fades a bit, and he again tries to dig through his memories to try and remember what he did before he got here. Of course, again, there's nothing, but he's glad that his past self was responsible enough to hire farmhands.]
Still... I am grateful for the work you did put it in.
[He pauses.]
If you do not mind, could you show me our home, and my room? While I may have lived here at some point, the current me would like to become familiar with the area again. Perhaps it may jog some memories...

[And that, as far as she's concerned, is that. She kept the place running, he said thank-you, and that's honestly more than she even needed. Knowing that he's back to appreciate it and wants to take it back is more than enough for her. It's like, the feeling of accomplishment and making a difference, probably!
Once both Shinji and Ken were gone, though, it was a big house to stay in all alone. She doesn't know if Astralin would suffer that same loneliness if she left, but... well. They'll just have to see!]
And yeah, of course. [She claps her hands, dusting them off briefly and turning with a smile that almost manages to reach her eyes.] It's good you're back, really, 'cause I did my best to water all the plants, but you can probably do something way easier with magic, right?
no subject
Correct. I used my ice magic to help water the plants and preserve them. But... As I said before, you deserve a well needed break. Although I am not familiar with you yet, I am proud of you for being so capable for caring for this farm.
[His other self, or whoever was here, would be very proud of her. However, the person wasn't here now, and the most he could do was offer words of encouragement. It's the least he could do after leaving this place apparently.]
Are there plants inside of the house as well? Knowing me... There probably are.
no subject
[That would be super convenient if so... she's picturing just dropping an ice cube into each pot and moving on with her day instead of lugging around a giant watering can. But with that said, she's clasping her hands behind her back and leading the way out of the barn, heading around to the side of the house so they can take their shoes off in a mud room instead of tracking dirt all through the house.
She flushes pink at the praise, though, and just tries to laugh it off.] It's okay! Like I said, it was the least I could do since you were letting me stay here. And yeah, the whole inside is covered with plants.

[Always the modest one... But he nods, and follows right behind her in curiosity. A soft hum leaving him as he stares up at that building that he once called home. Something about it seeming quite primitive, but it also was comforting in a way. It made his heart feel warm, and he can't help but smile a bit.
As he takes off his boots, and the aroma of flowers hits him square in the face, he can't help but blink in surprise at the sheer amount of greenery surrounding the house. Needless to say, this was definitely his work, and he almost wants to laugh.]
I see... This is very typical of me, and I apologize. But where did you learn to take care of plants? You must have had a very good instructor, or perhaps an after school activity?
[Cause... That's what kids do these days, right.]
