EXPIATION

Beep.

You remember a room of blinding white light–so bright that you couldn't make out any details. You heard voices, speaking in muffled tones. It sounded an awful lot like they were talking about you. You were just on the verge of figuring out what they’re saying, you were so close...but what happened after that?

Beep. BeepBeep.

Ah–that's right. You fell into blackness.

Now, you seem to be in an area of vast, rolling fields, just on the outskirts of a large city. How did you get here? It's hard to say, but you remember waking up, and you remember a beeping sound–

Beep beep BEEP.

Finally you look down and see a small mechanical creature at your feet. Across its screen flashes the following message:

WELCOME
TAKE THIS

After a moment, it adds,

...PLEASE.

A chamber on top of the creature–a bot, clearly–opens, revealing a small, hand-sized tablet. Once you have this device in hand, the bot beeps merrily and starts motoring away. The device powers on fairly easily, and, on the side, where a stylus might otherwise be nestled, there seems to be an old piece of parchment rolled up. If you unroll it and read its contents, you find that you are tied to an indeterminate amount of time to face a sentencing for a crime that you’ve been accused of, be it true or false.

...Now what?




Welcome to Expiation, an adventure game set in a seemingly idyllic fantasy world. In truth, it's a simulation run by an ever-changing AI that claims it will do whatever it can to help those under its care achieve rehabilitation. The elements vary from science fiction, fantasy, and subtle horror, that explore the concepts of crime versus innocence, definition of atonement, and reflection of self. Events occur bimonthly and it is up to the new residents of this world to uncover the truth of their circumstances, find a means to survive, and return to their original worlds, if they so choose to.

An overarching storyline will encourage characters to determine the truth about why they’ve been brought to this world and will be impacted by character discoveries and actions taken during events. Player-run events and plots are welcomed during the months when there is downtime.

Characters are mysteriously plucked from their world of origin, dropped into the white nothingness of disembodied mechanic voices, and told they’ll be treated as ‘all of the others’ have been. They awaken to distant beeping sounds coming from friendly welcoming robots, eager to introduce the new Chosen into this largely pleasant city of Aldrip. In hand, they carry documentation and a tablet that accuses them of a crime, whether it be true or false, and they are instructed to simply wait until they face their sentencing and begin their journey in redemption.
