(OPEN MINGLE) Ain't no party like an Aldrip party

Who: The Chosen
Where: Aldrip inn
What: Open mingle log (with mod approval)!
Warnings: Nothing major anticipated, other than light (underaged) drinking and comic mischief, but PM me if any warn-worthy things happen and I can update this space.

Feel free to use this log as a completely open mingle for all characters new and old! There will be a few prompts below the cut, but you're free mess around with them or come up with your own ideas for toplevels, and tag around as you please.

Nestled in the heart of the quaint town of Aldrip, the inn, formally known as The Inn, has housed the Chosen of Expiation since their initial arrival. In spite of the occasional influx of new Chosen, they've dedicatedly provided rooms, food and drink, and basic amenities without buckling—even during the food shortages and other issues that have plagued the town. Of course, the Chosen have been no slouches themselves, repaying the hospitality with mercenary work, hunting and fishing, cooking, completing odd jobs, and much more to help bolster the economy. Even those, er, less magnanimous sorts have benefitted from this give-and-take, although there are those that prefer their living space to be a bit more solitary (or perhaps cave-ier) that might not have noticed as much.

In the days to follow, most won't be able to recount exactly how The Party started. The true story is that one particular new arrival, after having spent a day or two scouting the area out and, deciding it's chill enough, opted to do what he does best: be a public menace. What is known is that rounds of drinks start getting ordered and handed out, and soon platters of cheese, fresh bread, and other victuals make the rounds as well, appearing on tables that quickly begin filling with people. Somehow, someway, local musicians are pulled in to play and given a striking, energetic setlist to set the tone. The word gets out—party at the inn!

And boom: just like that, it's a party, and everyone's invited.

Early on, the offerings are relatively meager. The inn's food stores aren't completely bottomless after the shortages, to say the least, and there are a sight more Chosen (and local residents who also join in on the fun) than there is free food to toss at them. The drinks range from milk, water and juice to scuzzy, pisswater beer, which is a bit more plentiful. As the tavern portion of the inn fills with people, the music relatively ambient so that you can still hear the people at the table next to you talking, others bring their own food and drink, adding to the options on offer.

Others bring things like cards to play with, or dice and coins to gamble with, and set up spaces at tables toward the back. There's even an amateur fortune teller, heavy emphasis on amateur. Maybe you've got some party games of your own in mind, or you're a natural-born performer and want to hit the stage. Maybe you'd rather just grab a pint and lurk in the corner doing some people-watching. Or maybe you're just hungry and want to stuff a bunch of cheese in your pockets for later. Either way, there's something here for everyone.

As evening wears on, the peaceful inn party blossoms into a proper block bash. Even if you're not the partygoing sort, it'd be a little difficult to ignore the sheer ruckus going on downstairs while you attempt to read quietly in your room. The music, chatter and laughter carries on down the street, attracting even more people. By this point, it seems as if the food and drinks have multiplied, thanks mostly in part to others showing up with their own offerings, Chosen and local alike. It's getting rowdy in a few places—the music's louder and livelier, people are dancing and singing, and the gambling/party games' stakes seem to just keep climbing higher and higher. It's a good time all around. If you're not the quiet, loner type, anyway.

Thinking of sitting this one out? Think again: somebody starts going around to all the rooms and knocking on the doors, calling out to come join the fun. By the time you get to the door, though, whoever's up here disturbing the peace is gone, but maybe you can track them down by their voice at some point and wring their neck later.

In addition to the escalating merriment, all this imbibing also has the added benefit of loosening a few lips. Now's your chance to pick up the latest Aldrip gossip! You might even hear tell of a few pesky monsters that need slaying, so if you want to jump on that bounty before anyone else gets to it, you better act quickly. (But maybe don't run out into the woods in the middle of the night to fight monsters while inebriated... or do, nobody's stopping you.)

Late into the night, the festivities are still going, and they're... messy. Fortunately the drinks and provisions seem to have run to the bottom of the barrel, so those that've been partying hard for hours are getting cut off whether they like it or not. The band's getting tired, the tempo of the music fluctuating. Some people might like to go to bed sometime soon, so maybe now it's time for the voices of reason to tell those still dancing on top of the tables to get down. And why is there a chicken in here? ...And oh no, somebody tell those guys to take that swordfight outside!! Yeeaaahh, maybe it's about time to shut this production down.

Or maybe not. Let the good times roll until the sun comes up! That's up to you.

Water will be fine for now.

[she's not quite comfortable enough in drinking beer quite yet, even from strangers. magical as she is, if a drink had something in it, she'd still be affected.]

Are you new here as well, or are you one of the ones who've been here a few months?

[She closes her eyes on instinct when they bump foreheads, but chances a small smile when he doesn't seem mad or disappointed or anything like that. This was nice too, just moving with the music. No one else cares or minds, no one's really paying attention to them anyhow. There's no rush to disengage.

She clings to him, feeling a little adrift and then feeling immediately guilty for it. Wasn't she the one that was leading here just a moment ago? She didn't mean to put this back on him now.
]

...Okay. I'd like that. [She's quiet for a moment again, the questions burning inside of her, before she takes a deep breath and a slow exhale.] And you called me-- I'm still Sumire, huh? So that's... That's good. [it's good. Right?]

[she grins a little as she notices that Sumi sits up straighter.]

Don't worry about getting formal around me, relax. You've done a lot of dancing.

[she gets up, then shrugs.]

I'm already up, so what would you like?

[Vi holds up some darts as she grins at Noel. she's feeling plenty tipsy right now, and she's not complaining about it at all.]

Closer you get to the middle, the more points you score. Except for that tiny little black ring, you get an extra five points. Each ring outside of that is ten points each, leading up to the center. Got it?

[she kinda just pulled it out of her ass, because that's definitely the way she played it, but it's not be accurate.

but when you're a kid, all the regular rules of darts is just too damn confusing. especially when you have the kids she had to deal with playing.]

[ Had Fai elaborated, Nanami would have agreed. The tavern would likely have been clean by morning even if Nanami hadn't decided to contribute to the effort, making his contribution unnecessary.

Practicality, ultimately, served as dispassionate reframing of what had begun as that vague feeling: someone should.

He [doesn't think of himself as][isn't] a guy who goes out of his way, generally. But, sometimes, part of adulthood is stepping up even when not directly responsible.

Something like that.

Kindness doesn't have anything to do with it, and if there's reason to judge the pause between Fai's surprise and his laugh, he may have some resistance himself to that characterization.

But, because Nanami doesn't know him, he's unaware of any reason, and disinclined to make any assumption. ]

Credit is a separate question from kindness. Or, we could say that crediting kindness risks diluting it. I'm not interested in splitting that hair.

Excuse me.

[ Because he's also not interested in standing around holding these plates, Nanami moves into the kitchen to toss the slop. ]

[He squeezes her again, gently.]

You've always been Sumire. You just took an extended hiatus. [It's kind of a dumb way to put it, but he's a little dumb right now. It's the thought that counts.]

It would be very cheeky, if you did that. I might have to warn the next newcomers about that cad with the playing cards.

[She gives him a wink as she picks up her cards and studies them.]

Nor was I, given our recent difficulties with food--I don't know if you've heard, but the refrigerators in town got overloaded and failed last month. And since that's what people rely on instead of less high-tech methods, we had to scramble to replenish the supplies.

On the other hand, liquor does last quite a bit longer than actual foodstuffs. Maybe that part doesn't surprise me quite as much.

[She does, indeed, seem quite friendly— Dohalim had been prepared to politely ask if he might join her as he'd approached with a frosty mug of his own in hand, but looks openly relieved when she makes the offer herself, bowing his head.]

I would be quite glad to, if you'll have me.

[Said with far less trepidation than he might have had two months earlier. Things are hardly resolved between them, but the necessity of working together in this place, of seeing one another in their daily lives, seems to have allowed for a bit of a thaw, one he is grateful for and does not intend to take advantage of.

The steps being taken towards building a new friendship have been more than enough by his measure, though there is still something in him that soars as she pats the seat beside herself. He slides into the seat with practiced grace, setting his mug down in front of him.]

I have been spending some time in recent weeks further developing my healing artes, that they might be of greater use. And yourself? I have noticed you have kept yourself quite occupied— not that I would expect any less.

[She squeaks and laughs at the dip, hanging on tightly. Wow, Violet's strong! Kotone's giddy grin splits her face as she falls back into step, eyes sparkling.]

That sounds like fun! Our cultural festival was canceled 'cause of a big storm, so we didn't get to have it at all.

[She blinks and goes cross-eyed when Violet fixes her bangs, giggling a little again at the familiar motion and just letting it happen.]

But yeah, I agree. Things have been kind of difficult here in the last few weeks, so the more people who can have fun, the better. You're settling in okay?

new arrival, apologies in advance

Couple months. I was in the first group that showed up, I guess.

[ Joel figures he owes this guy an answer, given that he just bought him a beer. He raises the tankard up slightly in acknowledgment, but his demeanor is not, on the whole, one inviting of more conversation. ]

[ Joel is also taking advantage of someone else buying the beer to drink more of it than he might otherwise on his own dime.

Which is not to say that he's drunk - not yet. When he's good and ready, he'll take as much of this beer back with him to his room and drink it all so that he passes out. Right now, he's just kind of buzzed. ]

I dunno, the beer is pretty shitty. Might be jail beer.

While I won't deny I do have standards, I'll admit to a preference for hard liquor. That said, beer itself is perfectly fine in theory, though I'd prefer it have a flavor other than 'piss.'

[Vi, you can hardly call this drinking. He gestures to the nearby pitcher on the counter, though noticeably doesn't set aside his own mug.]

Please, be my guest.

[ Joel isn't entirely sure how he feels about - whatever this is that seems to be happening, tonight. He's at his usual table, tucked away in a corner, not really inviting for companionship, and his face is about as inscrutable as it ever is, if not a little scowly.

His expression doesn't really change much as Aerith shows up with a mug of beer. He grunts faintly. ]

That kid still buying rounds for everyone?

[ Aerith is... fine. Nosy, a busybody, needs to leave well enough alone, but means well, at least. ]

[personal profile] aintyourdad 2023-04-27 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Joel is drinking the beer without complaint, but he scowls a little at being addressed. His intention of spending his usual quiet evening in the quiet corner of the quiet inn has clearly been thwarted by...whatever this party is. ]

Alcohol is alcohol. It'll get you drunk, sooner or later.

[ Sure, it's shitty, but he's had worse. ]

You got it.

[Vi half leans, half sits on a table that's behind her. she swirls her glass a little, her expression turning blank as she remembers that time.]

Merry band of scrappy kids, going to steal from the rich and powerful and all that. It didn't work out, but... [she waves her hand a bit.] Shit happens.

[that's. mostly so she doesn't start thinking about the after effects of all of that...]

[oh.

Vi blinks momentarily as the cupcake is offered to her, and then shrugs.]

Don't mind if I do.

[she takes it now, surveying it for a moment.]

There's no weird shit in here or anything, right?

[not that she's acting extremely worried about it, because before Kotone can react, she's taking a big bite of the cupcake.]

[listen. the girl can put away some alcohol.

she keeps drinking, especially at Aerith's encouragement. when she's done, she slams her glass down on the table and burps loudly -- an incredibly girlish gesture, obviously.]

Easy peasy. You said something about there being another one on the house?

At this juncture, I'd almost be willing to try. It's not as though we have any shortage of time on our hands.

[There's an irate note in his voice; he's not the sort who likes to remain idle, by any stretch of the imagination.]

A bit beyond my realm of expertise, however.

[ His hands are up automatically — not to defend or counter, but in a "whoa, easy" sort of gesture. No harm here, no ma'am. He even goes as far as to take half a step back and Roche has the decency to look almost sheepish for maybe... two seconds. Two and a half, tops. Yeah, he sort of had that coming. ]

I never assumed you did, miss. I simply thought you might know where I can acquire one given that...

[ A short gesture to some of the other locals, then quickly between them. Their clothing. ]

You seem more amicable than those who live here.
