As an adult, he basically just hung out in the rec room playing chess with Spock or cards with the Engineering crew - and as a kid, well, that wasn't exactly on the table, for him. Moreover, D&D sounded only vaguely (?) familiar, maybe a book he'd seen on Sam's PADD once upon a time - but if it was in fashion in his time, Jim was none the wiser.
Gwen's handed him a character sheet and the math, he can do, but the rest of it...he really is a n00b. ]
