I - CITY CENTER [It's honestly, embarrassing that he let his guard down enough to have ended up here. Even if there was no way to stop it, Kei simply tends to analyze situations like this one from a disjointed point of view. Enough time for people to snap a few pictures of him before he finally removes his biker's helmet from his head, a few strands of hair comically standing upright, using his other hand to push his glasses up his nose.]
Truly, a precarious situation...
[Ahh it spoke! A few of the locals look surprised as he tries to move despite the vines around his feet. This would be so much easier if he still had his sword. He looks towards the nearest person.]
You! Could you aid me?
[He's not really asking as much as demanding.]
II - CITY CENTER - A MODERN MAN REQUIRES MODERN SOLUTIONS [It's still hard to believe - the city, the 'phone' that looks even more modern than anything he could have had his hands on (prototypes or not), the weird mesh between modern and the sort of fantastical element that seems to permeate everywhere he looks.
The local business owners easily spot Nanjo as a Chosen, but they are rather surprised that he doesn't seem to want to do the usual spiel to get the free items, but rather ends up talking with them enough to be able to figure out their business models and propose a few suggestions to increase their profit ratio in exchange to help run their businesses. Few take up on his offer, but he does manage to get eventually get one handshake. This world hasn't quite caught up to a Harvard student who was majoring economics, and if he's stuck here for a while, he figures he might make the most of it. Just getting things handed to him won't make him the number one man of Japan...or this world.]
III THE DARK ALLEY [It's unwise to be out at night, he was warned, but Kei didn't feel like he had too much to worry about. Despite a lack of sword, he had found a wooden weapon he could wield if he truly needed it. That, and he had to admit to himself that it reminded him of old times...
If there was anything he had learned, it was that a city tended to show its true nature when most of its eyes had gone to sleep. People seeking a quick opportunity, or someone who might need help. Either way, it was a good way to gain information, if he was to figure out more about the world and (more importantly) if it was possible to escape it. It was only a matter of time before he ran into another Chosen. Kei isn't exactly the type of person that screams 'intimidating' with his medium stature, but there's something almost regal about him and the way he speaks.]
Excuse me, is there any particular reason you are out at night?
IV WILDCARD [Feel free to make his life miserable.]
[ Uh oh. Looks like he's not alone out here after all. And that makes two of them, as far as type of people who don't quite scream "intimidating" with their stature.
The dog accompanying the teen steps in between him and Kei, lips curled back in a protective snarl. The boy crouches behind the dog and strokes the dog's neck reassuringly. ]
It's okay, Koromaru.
[ Koromaru's been incredibly protective of him ever since last month's snake problems. ]
...I can't really be out during the day right now, that's all.
[ If Kei looks closely, he may notice the boy looks a little frail. ]
[Ahh. Well this is interesting. And not just the boy's frail stature, which painfully reminds him of someone else that Kei hadn't even been able to seen again after three years. No, the fact that the teenager and...even the dog had a resonance. An Albino Shiba Inu.
What a odd way to meet a fellow persona user. That being said, Kei was a good judge of character, but this threw nearly everything out of the window.]
I mean you no harm, young man. [He looks at the dog and nods.] And you as well, Mr. Shiba. [So polite to the point of it being comical.]
What type of cursed spell befell you?
[He will apply the logic of being a Persona user first.]
[ It's unusual enough for a stranger to address Koromaru as though he were truly sentient, but "Mr. Shiba?" That's definitely a new one.
Very well. Kei Nanjo has passed the vibe check, evidenced by how Koromaru takes a seat with a more relaxed posture. ]
This is Koromaru.
[ Maybe it says something about Minato, how he chooses to introduce his companion before himself and skips over himself altogether. In any event, there must be something "special" about this person, Minato thinks, if he's able to discern there's something supernatural haunting him.
But because Minato's not liable to share his troubles with others, he merely shakes his head. ]
...it's okay. There was some trouble last month, but it's fine now.
[He can ask how a dog can have a Persona later. Because he does remember theories about the possibility of it, considering it wasn't just humans who had souls.
Vague. Again, like someone else. Not too surprising. He's avoiding something.]
Excuse me manners, as it's rather impolite of myself not to introduce myself. [Perhaps a small realization of his own mistake, or simply a barb at Minato (or both. Usually it's both). He does a small bow. Calculated, as he's done ten of thousands of times so far in his young life. Clearly Japanese.] I'm Kei Nanjo. As you probably have guessed, I'm still new to this world.
[She wasn't fazed by the warnings. She had her gun and if push came to shove, she had her persona. It'd been a busy week. Checking in with everyone, working out the new lay of the land.
Working out what to do next now it seemed like there was more merit to the virtual reality theory.
The question made her peer up from the brim of her hat. She wasn't tall, but she stood as straight as possible.]
[Again, that familiar resonance. There seemed to be a lot more people here with Personas than he had first assumed, to the point where he wondered if they had been specifically targeted. His stance softens a bit.]
I apologize, young lady, if I came off as menacing. I was simply surprised to run into you at this hour.
Elizabeth peers at this man, who's clothing profess him to be #1, arguing with quest givers about the futility of their goal. It is sad watching someone who simply does not understand that sometimes one's duty is to do the ridiculous, and from time to time accepting it will yield power.
"If I may, may I pose a question to you sir #1? Perhaps it is their duty to offer quests so that others may gain power from them, and offering themthese suggestions simply goes against their destiny?"
He's been called many things, but never sir #1. If Kei had more of a sense of humor, he might find that funny. Instead he pauses mid-bargaining, an eyebrow raised, not only due to strange question by the person before her, but the sheer power she seems to extrude.
"Saying is their destiny seems to imply that it is the only thing they are permitted to do." A question of his own; "Why do you seem to think so?"
"Not the only thing, but a thing. Till I left my master, the giving of such quests was one of my duties."
She shrugs a bit, "I did not ask why, it simply was a thing I did to suppliment my duties with our guest's compendium. It was to prepare them for the ordeal at hand even if my Master's master was no longer monitoring things."
"Your master..." he repeats the words carefully, as if weighing them, the poor current merchant forgotten for a bit. The colors of her outfit, seemed to match the floor and walls of a certain place he knew. The fact he sensed some energy from her...altogether familiar and yet not...and if that 'master' had another master. Then perhaps...
"...would he happen to have a long nose?" At worst, she'd think it insulting. At best, well, there only was one of the Velvet Room who had that unique quality to him.
Normally I'd say, perhaps if you state your intents, I'll share mine. But this isn't a TV show.
[Bronya herself had been out to gain a better grasp of the surroundings -- and under normal circumstances she wouldn't disclose something that amounted to a personal mission. But it wasn't like the environment gave her much choice.
...the #1 certainly feels tacky, though. She can't help but give it a slight squint before looking to Kei.]
That being said, perhaps our interests align... do you have any information of value?
[EXCUSE YOU HIS #1 is DELIGHTFULLY OLD-SCHOOL (he would say if he knew what she was thinking).]
For now? Nothing much more than what has been told to us, if you have also arrived lately and my own personal observations from being in this world for a few days.
[He could lie to gain something in exchange, but that's just not him.]
How very concise of them to take things from a playbook made for the frustratingly vague...
[And she'd just said this wasn't a TV show. It makes some of the low points of her homeworld's media seem acceptable. Bronya holds a hand to her forehead at the thought of running functionally headless in a place like this.]
If nothing else, that at least tells me you're looking for answers as much as I am.
[ Some may not be altogether forthcoming about their business at night. But Claude here seems more than happy to answer this stranger's questions at length, voice as cheerful as can be. ]
Well, a few reasons! One, I like a nice, brisk nighttime walk. Keeps the blood flowing. Two, I can't seem to sleep. And three, it's a lot harder to explore the city's nooks and crannies with people everywhere.
[ Whatever the case, he seems utterly without fear -- which might have something to do with the sword on his hip, or the bow and quiver fastened to his back. ]
The better question is, why wouldn't I be out at night?
I did just say that I wanted to wander the streets while they were empty, didn't I? [ Claude winks at the stranger, a little salaciously. He just can't help it. Sometimes when he turns it on, it feels like it just keeps going, even if it's probably not wise to at least mildly antagonize a stranger. ]
But I assure you, it's not for any of those nefarious reasons you're thinking up, or at least the reasons I'm pretty sure you're thinking up right now! I just want to see the city in its natural state for once. But if you'd like to come along to make sure I don't get up to any particularly terrible mischief, you're more than welcome to join me!
[ That smile of his makes it abundantly clear that he knows he's insufferable and is absolutely unrepentant about it. ]
[Urgh, he's getting even more flashbacks of Ianaba being an intolerable idiot. Maybe that's why he's scoffing, all the while accepting the invitation. It's nostalgic. He has half a thought of calling him a monkey. Well, as the proverb goes, the only cure for an idiot is death.]
It does paint a picture, with your words and the weapons you are carrying. Then again, I'm not one to speak. [He has a two handed sword, which he's carrying with a single hand.] I apologize for assuming the worse; but I wouldn't want the people of this world harmed.
Something about the other's demeanour stands out to her. Maybe it's the attitude. It feels familiar, and Ange has to think for a moment before the puzzle pieces click together in her mind. Right-- He talks a lot like all the rich people she was always forced to hang around back home. She can't tell if it's just simply because he's rich too or just some cultural difference, but it at least explains why his attitude stands out to her so much.
It means that the girl's response is slightly delayed, having needed a moment of pause to think of all that, but then she slowly speaks up. ]
Why? [ There's no particular emotion in her tone, nor in her expression. It's a pokerface with a flat, deadpan tone to match. ] Are you the hall monitor or something?
[ It doesn't even sound like she's actively trying to antagonize him, since it's not like she's grinning.. It's just a very flat observation. ]
[What, does he look like he's in highschool?! He pauses as well, briefly studying her. The tone is flat, she's clearly not trying to rile him up, but that still feels insulting. Ahh well.]
Perish the thought. I was simply worried of others who might have more nefarious purposes now that most of the population is asleep.
[So... a night hall monitor?]
it's absolutely fine, no worries! c: thanks for getting back to it!
Sorry, Nanjo. Her impression of you is now formally settled. ]
Then..
[ Still, she is curious about something in that case. And Ange is clearly bold enough to just ask right away when there's something on her mind. ]
Say you do run into a person like that. What would you do then? [ She's mostly trying to figure out if he's a hall monitor with just bark or also with bite. Not that Ange was planning anything nefarious - she's just nosy, really. ]
I was sick for 5 days should be (hopefully) good now
